The musty but familiar odor of the Grand Lodge is a welcome relief to the companions' nostrils. The colds they all developed while in Irrisen and the Lands of the Linnorm Kings have finally subsided. Lort decided to stay a while longer to visit old friends and relatives, but the rest could not wait to get back to warmer climes.
The next mission is not far around the corner, but for now it is time to drink.
Please dot in when ready.

Gunari sits in the tavern, sipping his tasty malt beverage, contemplating what the next mission will be. Perhaps he will need to make some purchases to make the inevitable next voyage over the water more... palatable. But, for now, he and Gilligan sit, resting, observing.

Cyrus bursts through the door, then suddenly slows, as if he had been walking at an easy pace the whole time. He looks over his shoulder a few times, not hiding his worried look very well.

@Ibid: Please post your details on the discussion thread. I'm heading back to Australia tomorrow, so would like to have all the chronicles in order before then (so it's ready when I get back).
Since From Under Ice is winding down, I thought we could kick of the briefing for this scenario.
This will be semi-indicative of how I'll run things going forwards. Big posts that favor progress over to-and-fro roleplaying. Please do let me know if you think it's unnecessary and I'll slow down (until such time as completing becomes urgent).
After much libation, and a strange absence of a certain waitress, the companions make their way to the office of Venture-Captain Amara Li. They find the door open, and the petite leader of the Lantern Lodge faction smiles as she indicates the Pathfinders should enter.
The drifting steam of freshly made tea shimmers through the air in front of Venture-Captain Amara Li. The stoic Tian woman places an ornate tea tray on the edge of her desk, inviting all those present to partake of the drink. Li’s neatly organized office is the site of various tapestries and artifacts imported from the distant land of Tian Xia.
“I would like to thank you all for coming here despite the lack of explanation. Circumstances have forced me to be discreet in this assignment. There are many who would put the information I am about to share with you to more unsavory ends.” Amara begins to take an initial sip from her teacup before she continues.
“Several months ago I arranged the successful sale of a pair of tomes from my homeland of Tian Xia to a versed historian here in Absalom. Of these books, the Infernal Incantation was the more highly sought after, as it is said to contain the secrets of binding the legions of Hell.”
Amara takes another sip of her tea and then places the cup on her desk, her expression turning cold.
“The historian—one Yargos Gill—has spent the past several weeks studying the book from within his Absalom villa. To make matters more complicated, Yargos decided to try performing one of the rituals held within the Infernal Incantation late last night. From the breathless ramblings of his assistant who breathless ramblings of his assistant who arrived at my door only a handful of hours ago, it would appear that something went horribly wrong with the ritual Yargos enacted.”
“From what I was told, the ritual revealed to Yargos and his aides that the Infernal Incantation was not a guide on imprisoning fiendish forces, but instead the book itself was a prison for the armies of Hell. Within the confines of those ancient pages reside hundreds—perhaps even thousands— of devils eager to escape their long imprisonment. If Yargos’s bumbling has caused some sort of disturbance within the tome, then we need to ensure it is fixed as quickly and as discreetly as possible. It would not do the populace any good to realize that a full-on infernal invasion could appear in the middle of the city!”
“I need you to go to Yargos’s estate, where his aide has already informed him of your impending arrival. Once you meet with the historian, learn what you can about the book and how to reverse the meddling he has caused. Above all else, ensure that the legions of Hell are contained.”
Gunari, Ibid and Miro recall the following choice tidbits regarding the book:
- The Infernal Incantation is a tome from Tian Xia, said to hold the secrets of binding the denizens of hell.
- This book has a relatively unknown sister document: the Celestial Song.
- The books are written in Celestial and Infernal, respectively, oddly. The Celestial script of the Infernal Incantation is said to be penned in a sinister manner, and the Infernal script of the Celestial Song is said to be penned in crisp, neat Infernal.
- Rituals within the Celestial Song are said to sway the minds of those nearby, but before these powers take effect, the tome unleashes a great angelic chorus that takes hours to complete.
"Now," adds Amara Li, "Before you ask me questions of your own, allow me to add in some extra information that I have. These books were delivered to Tian Xia some time ago, and were held by a private collector in my home city of Goka. They came as a set.
"I do not know exactly how you could go about reversing Yargos's actions, but you have a reputation for being resourceful. I think a good start would be speaking to Yargos himself. Aside from Gill, only Ollysta Zadrian of the Temple of the Shining Star has anything approaching sufficient knowledge of these tomes in order to know anything about reversing the damage. She is scheduled to spend her day in Gilltown, purchasing goods from the locals there.
"If you are to speak to Yargos, you will need to find his estate. Despite his apparently wealthy backers, he resides in a relatively small two-story villa within the sparsely populated Eastgate district of Absalom. If I were a betting woman, I would say that Yargos prefers to keep his research a secret and has located himself there to avoid prying eyes." Amara pauses to catch her breath.
"Now," she says at last, "As to why his research took him to reading those books, and why he likes to keep it secret, I have it on good authority that the befuddled scholar is being backed by a powerful party in the Inner Sea region. This third party esnured that Yargos was fitted with all the resources he needed to study the books and their purpose. The identity of this third party remains a mystery."
There you go, the full reveal. Ask any further questions you may have. Take your time to absorb it all, this will be a slow and sporadic start while I'm in Australia. Full steam ahead from next Tuesday onwards. You're in Absalom, so no need to prep for any weather or strange seaward journeys. Huzzah, right?
Faction missions will likely follow in my next post.

GM Damo |

Faction mission hand-out time!
Pathfinder,
There’s something afoot in Absalom, and as always, it falls to the Society to clean up the mess! Amara Li and her Lantern Lodge have brought something into the city and they’ve been trying to hide what it is. What we do know is that it’s being researched by a well-versed scholar—you may even know him—Yargos Gill. If Gill has gotten himself in trouble, we need to make sure this doesn’t happen again. Should you be requested to clean up the old man’s mess, make sure to impose on him the assistance of the Society in any of his future endeavors. I think it would be wise to keep an eye on this old man from now on.
Get to it,
Venture-Captain Ambrus Valsin
Servant of the Ruby Prince,
The squabbles of our enemies are of great amusement, as always. The recent introduction of two imported tomes to Absalom has caused quite a stir among the other nations, but where they covet the fiendish Infernal Incantation I believe the knowledge we seek resides within its sister document: the Celestial Song. Our diviners have foreseen that this tome will be used in a powerful ritual, and should that occur, one of us must be present to obtain the knowledge within. Though the specifics of the ritual will be far beyond you, the act of staring into the raw power of the open book should be sufficient for our other agents to retrieve the information from you.
Ancestors keep you safe,
Amenopheus, the Sapphire Sage
Child of the Empire,
I hear you’ll be traveling soon to the Eastgate district of Absalom. How fortunate this turn of events! Lately, our nation has suffered unwarranted slander among the residents of this residential district, and opinion of the Empire is low there, even among those who once called Taldor home. Find the toughest and most menacing person you can in the district, and ensure they know that you represent the mightiest nation in the Inner Sea. Fill them with fear of Taldan reprisal and send them running. I trust it will be only a matter of time before the rumors involving our fair nation take on a decidedly more positive tone.
For the Empire,
Lady Gloriana Morilla
Friend,
I’ve been tracking quite a bit of movement from the Gilltown district this past month. Looks like those gillmen have some secret tunnels they’ve been holding out on. Not only that, but whenever my agents try to get down there, the whole place gets flooded! I need to know what kind of systems those fishies are using to keep their smuggling operation under wraps. If they have some sort of defense for their tunnels, I need to know about it! Do this for me and I’ll owe ya big, kid.
Thanks,
Guaril Karela

With letters from their respective faction leaders in their pockets, the intrepid group of pathfinders set out to the Eastgate district of Absalom. The old trees, sparse living quarters and streets free of hawkers is a welcome relief after exiting the bustling Coins district. One can't help but feel that, especially compared to the Ivy and Petal Districts, that Eastgate is out of place in Absalom. The entire place is quiet and muted, and would not be out of place located in a smaller city anywhere else in civilized Golarion.
Yargos Gill’s villa is a stand-alone edifice that would normally meld into the background of Absalom’s various structures were it not for the massing crowd of local citizens in front of the entrance. Up above on the second floor, lights flicker as burning orange and red embers dance within.
Fearing a house ablaze, the group bashes in the front door and races upstairs. A gruesome site greets them as the burst into what must be Yargos Gill's study.
Sheets of dancing orange and red fire cover the walls of this long room, forming blazing curtains around two windows facing the streets below. The interior of the room is undisturbed, and the wooden floor is completely absent of flames. A swirling, sinister symbol adorns the center of the floor, formed of a darkened red substance and accented by a few nearby candles. Opposite the only entrance into this room is a large open altar filled with more candles, a single blood-stained dagger, and an open book from which torrents of flame feed the inferno along the walls. Nestled in the corners adjacent to the entrance are three humanoid bodies—two toppled over one another in one corner, and a third in the opposite corner, face down on the wooden floor.
A terrifyingly beautiful devil-woman stands just in front of the altar, and turns to the companions, "WELCOME!" she screams calmly, "YOUR DEATHS WILL BE AS EXQUISITE AS THEIRS! YOUR PAIN WILL BE POSITIVELY... HEAVENLY." She licks her wickedly barbed longsword lasciviously at the last, standing in such a way as to accentuate her ample curves.
The bodies on the floor are very still and, with but a cursory glance, it is obvious they are all dead. The lone body to the north of the room matches the description of Yargos Gill. Oddly, though, the flames do not appear to be giving off any heat. Clearly, they are illusory. Ibid immediately recognizes the devil as an erinyes, a fallen angel who takes on the role of executioner in Hell (they reside in Dis, the thriving megapolis that is Hell's second layer).
You can have 1 retrospective round of preparation if you like before heading upstairs and bursting in. You were expecting something demonic, so it's perfectly fine if you prepare accordingly (not meta-game at all).
Also, the picture has her with bat-wings (according to the artist, still an erinyes and not a succubus)... but in actuality, they are black swan's wings (the way I like my erinyes).
Amaranti & Kaisharga initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

Miro initiative: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
Erinyes initiative: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
Your combined minds know the following about Erinyes:
- They have DR 5/good.
- They have resistance 10 vs acid and cold and are immune to fire and poison.
- They have the ability to cast unholy blight and minor image at will.
- Each erinyes carries a 50-foot-long rope that entangles opponents of any size as an animate rope spell (CL 16th, DC 20). An erinyes can hurl its rope 30 feet with no range penalty. An erinyes's rope functions only for the erinyes who made it and no other. The save DC is Dexterity-based.

nooooo!! Stupid wayfinder. Sigh. Here is my post from last night. At least it didn't eat it.
I get to see it!?
Cyrus rubs his hands together, suddenly very excited. He nods to Amaranti, expecting the Garundi to feel similarly. Bringing his focus back to the exotic woman,
"Thank you for the information milady. It's not very often I am stumped for questions... And it will be nice to stay within Absalom's walls for a change. Ibid mentioned the corresponding celestial text. You did say that is part of your set? It seems with it to speak with Lady Ollistra, if it isn't too far out of the way. Perhaps she may even know a little more about the celestial tome. Based on the description, they seem to be polar opposites, yin and yang. If there is a ritual to unleash the denizens in the infernal tome, perhaps it's opposite is in the celestial."
Cyrus goes from his question straight into rambling and thinking out loud, though he is sure he isn't the only one to have come to this conclusion.

GM Damo |

Back at the Lodge...
"Those are excellent points, Cyrus," says the Venture Captain, "Yes, speaking with Lady Ollysta would indeed be a good second step - depending, of course, upon what you find out when you speak with Yargos Gill. I will send word to her that you would like an audience and soon. I'm sure she'll be ready to receive you by the time you get there."
Everyone here knows the way to Venture-Captain Ollysta Zadrian's (the Temple of the Shining Star in Absalom's Ascendant Court district).

![]() |

Knowing we were going into something hellish - Cyrus would have struggled about whether or not to use his wand of shield, or scroll of align weapon. I will go with the scroll, assuming I pass the UMD...
UMD, DC 23: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12
Ok, that wouldn't have worked for the wand either. Wakizashi (not aligned in one hand, scroll in the other... Oh well :)

Gunari wonders if he should even bother talking to the thing that taunts them. It is diametrically opposed to all that he believes in, and has obviously killed many people. He yells out, regardless.
"Die, you heartless bîtch! Return the fiery hells that you came from!"
Since he knows he needs to hit hard, he chooses to call upon a power he hasn't often used. He uses Improved Weapon of the Chosen (swift) to make Cayden's Church Key Good.
PA,Good, Vital Strike #1: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25
PA,Good, Vital Strike #2: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12
damage(adamantine, Magic, good): 2d8 + 8 ⇒ (1, 7) + 8 = 16
"I hope you felt that, you bîtch!"

![]() |

Cyrus stutters for a moment, costing him precious time as the fight launches in front of him.
That... shape... those... wings...
"I fell in love with an angel once. But it was not meant to be. Maybe its because you are more my kind of angel..."
She is wholly evil... what are you even saying?
"You aren't really that bad are you? Or.... are you?"
Why am I suddenly so drawn to... this... her? It can't just be those curves... I've never even seen a Devil before... "Its like some twisted deja-vu..."

![]() |

"gentlemen, so good to ... see you all again. It had been too long. I look forward to crossing ... blades with you again Gunari. And I see that Lort is .... unavailable. Tracking mammoths no doubt. And Venture Captain. No boats. Wonderful. "
At the house
"Friends. Let us hope this fire does not ... spread. Methinks it will be too much to handle.
Prep round
Finarin pulls his holy weapon balm and coats his magical scimitar with it.

![]() |

"Local mission, no long travel? Good, we go in quick, so can still have beer at Sheeba's place in evening! And Finarin, too? Long time no see. Where you been?" Truth to be told, delving into some books doesn't sound that appealing, so the Garundi is left wondering about Cyrus' enthusiasm. But knowing this is society business, there will sure be fighting. And not spending weeks in sea is a definite bonus.
At house, Amaranti casts Mage Armor on Kaisharga before bursting in.
"She from Hell?" Amaranti rises his eyebrows once Ibid shares his information. "Guessed, she must be from hot place. She no wear those clothes to keep warm."

GM Damo |

8 hour bot from the airport! I'll give Gunari an extra +2 attack & damage from the IC, since it would have come first.
Miro does what he does best: a peppy and witty song that buoys his companions' spirits. So as to avoid incoming area of effect spells, Miro does what he can to break up the merry band of targets by stepping back out the door and around the corner - still well within auditory range.
With a rallying cry of his own, Gunari thrusts his newly named Cayden's Church Key into the unholy hell-bîtch. She howls.
"FÜCKING PRIESTS!" she cries in outrage, "YOU WILL DIE FIRST. ALLOW ME TO SHOW YOU THE POWER OF HELL!" With that, the erinyes takes a step away to put her back against the wall (the square to her south that is partially occupied by the altar can count as difficult terrain), and unleashes a wave of magical energy in the middle of the room. A spiraling miasma of darkness swirls around, chilling those it touches to the core of their souls.
Amaranti will save: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
Kaisharga will save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Cyrus will save: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (3) + 0 = 3

This is one of the drawbacks to having too many characters, and trying to do too much on the fly without double checking my character sheet. If you will allow it Damo, I don't actually own a scroll of align weapon, I have an oil of align weapon... which doesn't require a UMD. I am ok if you want to rule that I can't use it since I messed up my own character and his gear, but if its ok, I would like to have applied it in that 'prep' round. I will assume it is ok, if not, then just take 5 away from my damage, if I manage to hit! :) Sorry for the confusion/retcon.
"Arrhhh..." Cyrus cries out, his yelp turning into a whimper.
"Why do you look so good, but make me feel so bad?" He wonders out loud, more to himself than anyone else in the room.
Fighting his instinct to run away, Cyrus bolts across the room, closer to the she-devil who is easy on the eyes, but hard on the soul. Getting close he dekes to the left and slides down to the right, leaning back hard to put himself out of reach of an opportunistic attack.
Acrobatics to avoid AoO, Daredevil boots, IC, ki point, +10 to DC for moving full speed: 1d20 + 17 + 5 + 2 + 20 ⇒ (6) + 17 + 5 + 2 + 20 = 50
His rump slides easily across the floor, his balance perfectly centered to allow him to kip back up once he has put himself on the other side.
"Finarin! Step in here and I will cut out her heart!" Cyrus pops up behind her, holding back his blade for moments, allowing the magus to step up to the evil creature. Once his friend brings his weapon to bear, Cyrus lashes out.
Attack, Daredevil boots, Uncanny Dodge, Flank, IC: 1d20 + 11 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 11 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 20 for Damage, SA, IC, magic, Good aligned: 1d6 + 2 + 2 + 3d6 ⇒ (5) + 2 + 2 + (5, 6, 4) = 24

Back at the Lodge...
"Finally, a mission about books," he says with a laugh. "This one should be right up my alley." However, as the old man hears more about the books in question, his smile gradually fades and his laughing manner all but disappears as the gravity of the situation takes hold.
At the grisly occult scene...
Just before entering the room, Ibid will take his mutagen(dexterity)
"Everyone, be careful!" the old man shouts, entering the room. "It's an erinyes!" Ibid shouts what he can in span of a few seconds to quickly pass on some knowledge about how to fight this creature, and hopefully, how to kill it. A few quick steps later draws the old man into the corner where he immediately draws up his bow and fires, with his back pressed up against the wall.

The retcon is absolutely, 100% fine. I may be crazy, though, but I didn't think uncanny dodge gave you a +2 to hit!
Cyrus slides gracefully right past the shocked erinyes but cannot seem to land what would certainly have been a devastating blow.
Ibid is unable to get the draw he'd usually like on his longbow, and the wall interferes with the shot. His arrow thuds into the wall next to Cyrus's head, luckily missing the agile ninja.

So if one made the save and is neutral, then it's 4 points of damage?
"Everybody, charge the hot girl with wings. With haste!" Chuckling at his extremely clever wordplay, the Garundi casts the aforementioned spell and moves into position.
Cast Haste on everyone but Miro

![]() |

Smelling extraplanar evil in the room even before the old human identified the creature, Kaisharga knows this is going to be a tough fight. The erinyes' diabolical skin will surely resist the eidolon's teeth. But no matter, it's purpose is to stand between the master and the enemy, so there it moves and attacks.

Gunari takes a step in, calling upon Cayden Cailean to imbue his weapon with the power of Good. Feeling the enhanced quickness that Aramanti granted him, he forgoes his usual single strike, stabbing at the hell-creature twice. I am assuming that Miro is inspiring courage... didn't see a post about it though.

In an effort to try to save you some time GM Damo - this is the link to the feat, canny tumble. That is what I meant to type instead of uncanny dodge. The +2 is still good, I'm just a dummy and can't type. I don't know if a roll of 20 is still good, but it might be close enough that I just wanted to make sure.

GM Damo |

A 20 misses, thanks for the clarification. Higher levels get so interesting, don't they?
I know a lot has been going on on the other game, but I really didn't expect to have to do any bots on this one. It's been over 24 hours. We're not going to finish in time at this rate boys. Let me know if there are any issues with the requested posting speed on the discussion thread and I'll see if I can come up with an alternative plan.
Kaisharga can't seem to hit the devil-woman, but Gunari's iconic rapier has much better luck, drawing reddish-black blood with a well-timed strike.
Finarin pumps arcane energy into his scimitar, and strides up to the erinyes with fire in his eyes, squeezing into the gap between her and the table.
Finarin +1 shock scimitar w/shocking grasp, inspire courage, haste: 1d20 + 9 + 1 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 9 + 1 + 2 + 1 = 23
Damage +1 shock scimitar, w/shocking grasp, inspire courage: 1d6 + 5 + 1 + 6d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 5 + 1 + (4, 5, 4, 3, 1, 6) + 2 = 34
Miro pops back into the room and casts grease upon the demon-wench's longsword.
Relfex save (DC 15): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 12 = 17
However, she manages to keep her grasp upon the weapon. A laugh escapes her lips, despite being gravely wounded and the dark pits of her eyes stair unblinking into the eyes of Lord Finarin Moonstep, the lightning-wielding magus and then at Gunari, whose rapier burns with the purity of his god. "YOU CANNOT WIN! GROVEL, COWARD! FLEE!" she cries, her words infused with hellish power.
Finarin will save (DC 19): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
Gunari will save, mind-affecting (DC 19): 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 9 + 2 = 27

Thanks Finarin, welcome back (didn't realize you were still on vacation). I do recall also that Miro said he was snowed under at work, too, so we're all good.
The duo of Amaranti and Kaisharga attack the erinyes hard. While only one of Kaisharga's many attacks actually manages to land, it does pierce the devil's unholy protections and draws blood. Amaranti, on the other hand, does significantly more damage. Getting his wish, he sees an opening - her mouth - and expertly places the point of his lance through it. He feels it smack into her spinal cord, severing it and killing the thing. The erinyes falls to the ground and gradually dissolves as though the air were now made of acid.
With the source of his fear removed, Finarin stops screaming and everyone notices the tome closes itself with a loud thud. This puts an end to the illusory flames. The pathfinders begin investigating the room to discover what went on here. The two intertwined bodies are both female. The one on the bottom appears to have been stabbed multiple times by the first, with a strange masterwork dagger with a coral-carved hilt. The upper body has been slain with some kind of barbed blade, most likely the longsword that was possessed by the now-dead erinyes.
Upon inspecting the third body - that of Yargos Gill - the companions come to realize that it is in fact an illusion. Quickly tossing of the room, they find the man unconscious and hastily hidden behind the altar.
Going to assume you heal him, please let me know what method you use.
The aging historian mumbles his thanks and feels around for his thick-lensed glasses on the altar, "Ah!" he says at last, putting them on upside down, "Thank you again, and yes... yes... many thanks. Please, do tell, what brings you here at this most fortuitous of times... and how did you manage to defeat the book's guardian? Tell me everything. Did I say thank you? If not, you have my thanks. Thank you."
Nice work on the combat! I'll move it along again next time I post, but thought I'd give you a chance to roleplay a little first.

"Well, funny coincidence, we were actually called upon to come here and prevent something like that from happening. Guess we didn't get here in enough time to completely prevent it. No use crying over spilled milk, though, at least YOU are all right." He grins, attempting to help the man up.
He looks about sheepishly, chuckling, "I would tell you how they defeated the bad guys, but I'm afraid I was hiding around the corner for most of it."
"But you're very welcome, regardless! Now that things have settled down" Miro uses his small body to try to block the old historian from seeing the dead women on the floor, "maybe you could answer some questions? We have it on good authority that someone was financing your research. Who might that be?"

Cyrus feels the strange sense of deja-vu snap like twine suddenly breaking, and the heavy weight on his soul lifts when the devil woman is brought low. The wounds of whatever she did to him are still present though, so he goes around with his wand, healing himself and everyone else who was affected.
Don't forget to roll for clw wand charges, I was down 18 from this fight. Let's make sure the next combat we get into we are topped off.

Amaranti looks satisfied at the dead creature, and starts wiping the devil-blood off from his weapon. The Garundi is surprised when he hears the historian returning to consciousness - after all he didn't pay much attention to what he thought as corpses. But he cannot help but grin to the man's question.
"We hit it hard. With lance and sword. Then it die. Shame, she quite hot! What was she? Book-guardian?" Looks like books are pretty dangerous, in addition to boring. Amaranti has done a wise decision to steer clear of those.

Yargos peers up from the table at the Pathfinders, his glasses tilt over the bridge of his nose to rest slightly askew as he does so. "Ah, yes, my backers. Wealthy folk from Andoren! Looking into ways to keep the fiends at bay, yes indeed. My experience with matters of military history in particular were of interest to them. The secret to containing the Infernal armies were contained in these two tomes, so they said and so I had confirmed. Oh, woe! But in my arrogance, I have made a grave mistake. Nicola over there," Yargos indicates the woman who was killed by the erinyes, "Took the book, the Celestial Song, to Ollystra Zadrian of your Silver Crusade faction to see if we could find a way to contain what we had unleashed. What a fool I was! Is it any wonder she betrayed me upon her return? Lauralei said you would be here, that you could help.. and that is when Nicola killed her! Oh, the poor thing. What have I done?"
Yargos seems to collect himself a little, "Did I tell you what the book truly held? I didn't? Oh, well, allow me to illuminate you that you may know the peril we... nay, all of Absalom now face! The book contained not the secret to containing the devil armies... but an actual army of Hell itself! Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of devil warriors await their release upon this world. The erinyes you fought was but the first, but there will be more if we do not find a way to seal the book. My ritual that was supposed to release the secrets unbound it and we must bind it again. Let us find the Lady Ollystra and see what she has uncovered.
"Oh, woe!" he cries again, looking at his dead apprentices and the Infernal Incantation, "But I have learned my lesson well. No more shall I peer into the ways of the dark arts for illumination. No more shall I look to the past for the way to the future! I shall simply be what I am and see what my own two eyes show me. My work is over. I am retired."

![]() |

That book, that is what the sages need Amaranti and I to witness...
"You keep saying there will be more, but how many? and when? What keeps them from spilling out en-masse right now? We can, and will, rush to Ollystra right now but how do we know.... you know what. Never mind. We are taking this book with us."
Cyrus brushes over the man's laments rather cold-heartedly, not worried about him in the least. He walks to the book, grabbing it and putting it in his backpack. He then pulls it back out, makes sure it is closed, and wraps it a few times with his silk rope just to make sure it stays closed, as if opening slightly might allow a devil to fall out the way a book mark does when a book is turned on its side.
"And... ahh... You are going to need to be more specific about who exactly are the wealthy folk from Andoren that were bankrolling this operation. I can't be the only one who thinks that this was a con, and that you were an easy target to unwittingly release an army of devils in the center of Absalom." Once again, Cyrus doesn't even flinch at the rudeness of his back-handed insult to the wizard. He certainly pays no mind to his own significant shortcomings in matters of willpower and gullibility.

Cyrus paces about, ready to leave before another thought strikes him.
"Wait... You said Nicola took the celestial song to the silver crusade faction, and then she was the one to betray you when she returned? How is it that you know she delivered the book then? If that book is the only potential way to seal this one up, why would she take it to someone who could accomplish that, if she wanted to see the devil army unleashed? Why would she kill Lauralei when the girl simply reported the news that we were on our way to help? Something else is amiss here... Either way, we need to go see Ollystra, immediately."

Miro turns to Cyrus and nods his agreement. "Indeed. It might be the key to preventing a second Worldwound from appearing, right here in Absalom!"

2 charges and healed. I assume for now that you are keeping track of charges, Damien?
Gunari shakes his head when he hears the story told by Yargos. "Why do we keep ending up in this situation when academics do stupid things. Releasing a horde of devils on Absalom? How did that ever seem like a good idea?
"And realize how bad an idea this was, when it is a priest of the Drunken Hero that is chastising you!
"So, how many of those damned creatures will we have to put down? Where are they hiding, now? Are there other Hellspawn that we'll need to destroy?"
Gunari takes a shot of whiskey at this, and explicitly does not offer any to Yargos.

"And... ahh... You are going to need to be more specific about who exactly are the wealthy folk from Andoren that were bankrolling this operation."
Yargos looks blankly at Cyrus for an uncomfortable amount of time. Then his face breaks out in a smile and he lets out a single, loud, "Ha!" before regaining his composure (such as it is) and continuing, "You mean you don't know? The Pathfinder Society in Andoren. You know, the 'Andoren' faction, though I think they're calling themselves 'Liberty's Edge' these days or something like that. I'm not completely current on Pathfinder politics. If you think they are capable of deceiving me, then perhaps you Pathfinders were the wrong choice of ally..." He grins broadly, not meaning the last.
I can't believe this wasn't in the mission briefing or any of the knowledge spoilers or FAQs, but it wasn't! FYI, this is why he sought Amara Li's help and is seeking Ollystra Zadrian's - he's allied with the PFS! He first appeared way back in adventure #1. Yep, first ever.
Yargos grin disappears when Cyrus talks about Nicola however, "Well... I, uh... well, I just assumed... erm..." (why he doesn't make the connection in the scenario confuses the hell out of me also) "... oh dear. If she doesn't have the book, then, who does?"
"I think she Killed Lauralei because she had seen what was coming out of the book and she wanted to prove herself to her new masters. You are better investigators than me, and likely to make better inferences. I am better at looking at things that have happened and not what might happen. Perhaps if I was better at seeing what might happen, I would never have used that fool ritual."
Yargos looks crestfallen at being told off by Gunari, "I didn't think it would release devils. All of the research said that the ritual would allow us to open the book, and the book would then reveal how to stop the armies of Hell. My backers thought so also, though they didn't know I was opening it so soon. Luckily, only the erinyes was unleashed so far, but the book is unsealed. If I am correct, based on my new understanding of things, that means they are now able to escape. Without help on this plane, they will find it difficult, but - as you have seen - not impossible. We had best hurry.
"Here," Yargos retrieves two vials, "These can make your weapons effective against evil, just utter the words 'good' as you apply them." He places two oils of align weapon upon the altar for the Pathfinders to distribute amongst themselves.
"I believe Lady Ollysta is currently on a mission of kinds. She's been buying up items of necramantic origins that have been appearing in great numbers of late around Gilltown. The stalls are just opening now, so we'll likely find her there, trying to buy last night's stock before someone else does. Let's... well, let us go."
In contrast to barely ten minutes ago, the streets are crowded with people. Yargos powers ahead, insisting he knows the district better than the Pathfinders - which is apparently true. The man knows many back alleys, and despite the crowds, the group makes good progress towards Gilltown.
The hustle and bustle of Absalom’s Eastgate district is nearly deafening as hundreds of locals make their way from their homes in the residential quarter to places of business and pleasure elsewhere in the city. In the distance the sounds of chattering voices, stamping feet, and even the occasional cry of traveling elephants break the calm. The noises recede into the background as Yargos Gill pushes ahead into a side street alley. The old man eventually stops halfway in the alley by an open refuse bin to catch his breath.
As the Pathfinders catch up, they become aware of a presence at both ends of the alleyway. Ambush!
Perception results: Cyrus, Finarin and Miro may act during the surprise round.

Back at the brutal occult scene...
"Do you know anything else of this, Lady Ollysta?" the old man asks, adjusting his pack and then slinging his longbow diagonally across his body. "I would very much like to speak with her about the mission she is on, and to find out how it relates to these books.""It cannot be a coincidence that she is investigating at least tangentially similar occurrences in Gilltown."

Oh this map brings back memories of my first pbp gaming session ever, first pfs experience. Pooka was literally on death's door. Failing that stabilize save would have put him at dead instead of bleeding. Same map, and funny enough, that was an ambush written into the encounter as well! Ok, back to this game...
Cyrus' heart skips a beat, though he doesn't realize until after the fight that it was out of excitement, not out of fear.
These guys just ambushed the wrong blokes...
With a wink to his elven friend, Cyrus focuses his inner street survival skills and blinks out of visibility. swift action, ki point to vanish for up to 6 rounds.
Once invisible, he quickly moves towards Ned and Larry, drawing his Wakizashi on the way.
