@ Zimu and the Judge, If I am to attempt to infiltrate the tower at some point I will need a magical disguise. I should either borrow Xen's hat or have Zimu craft me several scrolls of Disguise self to use. I will also need a couple of scrolls of Detect Secret Doors and possibly Invisibility.
I have found a possible suitable candidate to replace. I suggest I replace him one for a day and then we make him appear to die of natural causes the next. I can pretend to be sick and leave early once I have a decent layout of the tower as well as the guard layout.

Quote:
Day Four: Dren is still following servants around. There's one -- an old man who seems to be some sort of cleaner -- who looks hopeful; he lives alone and doesn't seem to have close friends. Need another day or two of watching, though...

If I am to join the watch on the door I will need to complete my surveillance of the old man before we put anything like sneaking into the tower into action. I will also want to sneak into his home while he is away and see what I can find out about him.

When comparing private notes with Jax regarding the Bard of Barrington, The Fall of Amberlyn, and if he and his merrie men made waves at the Royal Court, Knowledge 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (19) + 10 = 29

Marlowe is actually moderately famous, and has indeed performed before the Court. It's definitely a little odd for him to be way the hell up here at the Wall -- not unheard of, but this town probably doesn't see a troupe of this caliber twice in a decade.

The Fall of Amberlyn is also moderately well known; it's two star-crossed lovers on either side of a war, type of thing. Does have a happy ending, though.

Anything else relevant DM? Also what 'day' is it of the week today? The performance is on Starday. Is it a single performance?

It also occurs to me that

1. These may not be the real 'Bard of Barrington' hence why they are performing here, well away from the theater circuit.

2. It may be the real Bard but what if the real Bard and his merry men are a group of traveling thieves.

3. If they are the 'real deal' they may get an audience with the commander of the fort. What stops us from jumping the bard and using his persona as a cover to get into the fort?

More later, need to get my hair done.

Do we know how many actors in the troupe? Or at least how many characters there are in the play to give us a guess of how many there are in the production.

The play is pretty well populated with characters. You'd expect at least a dozen actors in the troupe, plus a comparable number of stagehands and such.

Day Five

Dren is still tracking the old servant. Looks hopeful! He lives alone in a small cottage with just a dog. (Hm, you'll probably have to kill the dog too.)

Jax, someone wants to know whether you do portraits?

Judge and the dwarves, will roll.

I have the impression Sir Edmin has mostly been sulking in his room?

By the way: if Sakkarot's plans have gone off, he is now just a few miles north of you. His scouts should be in place waiting for your rocket-signal. You have about 20 days to get the job done before his army of monsters begins to grow restive.

As he is doing this, he will try to make small talk with the dwarves asking about the dwarves of the north and whether they have any specialty crafts that might be for purchase and of interest to a reclusive southern noble. He will also inquire into how long they have been here and how involved they were in the building of the town and the fort as both show signs of fine dwarven craftsmanship.

Diplomacy: 1d20+12

DM we have seen the soldiers who have been drinking with Xen, do they have a uniform? Could we make duplicates?

What's to stop us from sending Morsum in the dead of night tonight, which is night 5?

We have 20 days, it feels like we will be in a time crunch soon, I say if we don't have a way in by five days from now, during the night of the play some of us scout and sneak into the fort.

Before then let's make use of our time, who wants to follow up the lead of the Bard and the acting troupe?

Edmin do you want to do some investigating? Your obviously a soldier and some of them may warm up to you.

Jax is terrible at diplomacy so may not be best for following up on the acting troupe. He has good bluff and stealth. Also, question, DM: Has any of us noticed someone using the secret tunnel in the last few days? I believe we've been keeping an eye out for it.

Jax will gladly, of course, do portraits. Depending on who it is. Hopefully either a beautiful woman (or man!) or someone from the guard tower, because he does love to paint brave frontier soldiers.

We will need to find someone else to replace as well as the old man then. The idea of the one person is that if the old man died in his sleep it wouldn't raise any questions, two servants suddenly going missing or dying probably would. I like the idea of having more than one person on the mission, we will just have to plan it out more carefully.

That required a DC 25 Bluff check ("outrageous lie"). So, you've lost a day and you have an angry shopkeeper.

It really was a bad painting. Probably better stick to landscapes.

Possible, but you'll need a few more days of watching and skulking.

So Judge.

A brief cutscene with the Judge:

Are you dreaming? You don't always sleep well, these days. The Jewel in your forehead keeps you awake sometimes: a dull cold ache, deep in the bone. And sometimes, if you are very still, you can feel a faint fluttering that is Sir Balin's soul, pinned like a butterfly, trapped, the dark energies of the Jewel working on it like slow acid. And also, your health is not what it was; you were always vigorous and strong, decade upon decade, but of late you've had occasional aches and chills.

So perhaps you are dreaming. But if so, you wish you could awake. Because there's something near you, in the dark. Something old and vastly powerful. You can smell it. It smells wonderful and horrible, musky and foul and yet somehow erotic. Something huge is moving in the shadows, and you should be able to see it because when have you ever been afraid of the dark? You see through all darkness. But not now. These shadows crawl and move, and even your vision cannot pierce them. And something is moving in them.

You cannot see it; but it sees you. It knows you. It is huge and amused. And your mind is an open book to it.

You are used to being the terror, not the terrified. But now you're like a weasel that has come carelessly into the lair of a bear or a tiger: a lesser predator, suddenly in the presence of a greater. You want to speak, to shout for help, to move, to run, to summon your eidolon. You can't do any of those things. Something heavy slithers slowly towards you. Something complex and many-angled moves in the shadows. There is a low, throaty sound... a chuckle? Something is very close now.

Something touches you, intimately.

The Judge jackknifes out of bed, screaming and screaming.

and an additional note for him:

Judge:

Anyone else who is in the inn heard that. You'll be confused and not yourself for a while. Up to you how to play it.

DMDM & anyone else in OOC:

The Judge awakes with a start and immediately summons his own shadow. Morsum appears a few moments later taking guard by the door to the room. The Judge then attempts to recall what happened.
A dark shadow. A huge dark shadow.
So many souls condemned to labor and death over the years. Some justly, some for personal gain, some simply for the enjoyment of seeing the pain in another.
Was this the shadow of one who had stood before the Judge. One condemned without just cause?
So many images, so many thoughts, but none comport with the shadow that appeared at the edge of the Judge's sleeping reality.
No, it was not one soul, perhaps many, but the shadow was too big, too powerful to be someone who stood before the Judge in northern Farhold. Truly evil criminals who committed unthinkable acts. The Judge smiles coldly at the thought. They were sent to the capital be be tried before the chief judge in the royal court..
Who then, or more likely what. A sign from the Dark Lord? An intrusion from one of the other Knots? Yes. That was a likely possibility. Little was known most of the Knots. Perhaps one or more contained those skilled in manipulating the will of others. Of invading dreams. Well, whoever it was would be in for a surprise soon.
The Judge can feel his power growing daily, as his mortal body slowly fails him. Soon, he would attain the powers of his true parent. Soon he would be able to crush the will of the Mitran faithful and any others who stood in his way, fools.

After lying in bed for a period with Morsum quietly standing guard by the door, the Judge finally decided that this never occurred. If asked, he was just as surprised as the others. He would direct the Ninth, but in doing so, make sure that whatever invaded his dreams would not be able to do so again.

With that, the Judge stood up from his nights (un)rest and cleaned himself for the day. Using his Sleeves of Many Garments, the Judge makes his outfit appear clean and pressed, as always. Then taking on his usual stony demeanor, the Judge dismisses Morsum and heads down to the common room as though nothing had happened that night. If asked about the scream, he simply knows nothing about it and must have slept through it.

Bluff: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (2) + 13 = 15 <-- he pulls off the lie, but not very well

That's one day of not getting beaten up, and one day where they actually loosen up and get friendly. Some random facts that come out:

-- Commander Havelyn is a fine leader, but rather melancholy. Father Dunnigan seems devoted to trying to cheer him up. Good luck with that. Commander Havelyn is so grim (or so devout) that he doesn't even drink wine or beer.

-- Captain Mott is widely disliked. His attractive, vivacious young wife is widely admired. From a distance; Captain Mott is a jealous man with a nasty temper.

-- The food is adequate and Sergeant Barhold makes sure the stores are fresh; no rotten meat or weevil-infested bread at Balentyne, and the soldiers appreciate that. Still, it gets kind of boring. But once a month Mama Kolo brings her New Moon Stew up from the village and feeds the whole garrison for just two coppers each! She's losing money, but it's a nice tradition that began twenty years ago when a Balentyne patrol saved her village from a wandering group of bugbear raiders.

-- Speaking of Balentyne patrols, the next one goes out the day after tomorrow. Two days out, two back. Usually they're way oversubscribed -- everyone wants a chance for some action, or at least a break in the routine -- but this time not, because nobody wants to miss this crazy "Bard of Barrington" thing.

-- And speaking of bugbears, apparently some fools may have sold them some metal weapons? That's bad! Well, if you're going north of the Wall, sure. It wouldn't help them get through Balentyne, they'd need siege engines for that. Well, anyway, who would do something like that? My friend, there are some evil bastards in this world.

Xen needs to try to seduce the Captain's wife, or at least make a pass at her to anger Mott into requesting a duel. Actually, almost anything that would anger him and lead him to doing something foolish.

_________

After the rather un-Judge like awakening, the Judge decides to once again speak with the local merchants, especially any of dwarven ancestry.

Remembering his previous life, he searches out to see whether there is any quality products to be found for his own use. Perhaps a long black robe or a secure satchel to protect anything he has or something else of a find craftsmanship.

Not sure whether I need any new rolls, or if the previous ones are still good. I do not know whether I learned anything from the dwarves, or whether my lack of speaking dwarvish nixed any chance.
