It's day 4 I think, those who did not stay watch, the Judge, Cуровую, Edmin, should do further day investigating. Even those who stood watch could possibly do so and rest eight hours from 2 pm to 10 pm, or have some rotation as such. Does Morsum even need sleep?
Edmin if you are not wearing your magical disguise perhaps Dren can at least use his skill with you to make you look less like Edmin.

We should keep on thinking of ideas of getting into the fort as well as possible ways to weaken it and its protectors.
Here is another idea, a few weeks down the line, we send a letter from Edmin, wanting to at long last reconcile with the fort's priest and to 'bury the battle axe' as it were. Edmin is in the nearby town and is, about to be wed. Would his old friend make peace and officiate the ceremony? 'Please hurry my old friend!' We ambush the cleric as he gallops to meet Edmin.
'Zhilda' |
On day 4, Cуровую will use her wit and charm, which recently took a bruising from being outsmarted by a door, and seeks the dwarves of the Lord's Dalliance out.
She will use the story that she is a traveling bard Hilzda, new to the town and she has long been interested in the dwarven language and old tall tales of the ancient race. She will even use Linguistics to say a few phrases and ask for proper pronunciations.
Hilzda will casually drop mentions of the days of the Barcas, and how they seemed to know the proper way to deal with dwarven people rather than the current ruling house.
How about an ale friend dwarf? Please share some stories.
Surely this proud and noble race has tales to tell, what are they doing here, such gifted artisans must be in demand elsewhere, why remain here?
And oh, I heard several engaging stories, have you heard of the one about Smaug the Golden? How about the dwarven wife who asked, 'WHY DON'T WE EVER HAVE SEX ANY MORE?'
Bluff hopefully with some roleplay bonuses 1d20 + 11 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 11 + 1 = 31
Edit almost as sexy as Xen!

I believe Edmin is known as a renown murderer...he would probably meet him, with half of the guard.
Dren will change his sleep pattern to day, he prefers it anyways and stand watch each night and sleep during the afternoons as suggested. I have close to the best stealth without my enchantments and can activate things as the door opens if needed.
Cуровую зиму |
And I believe that drawing half the guard out of the fort on a wild and fruitless chase on the eve of the bugbear attack seems rather helpful to our cause. Just as how Edmin's life was torn, it would be poetic justice to the the cleric come rushing back to see the fort overrun. I actually really like that idea.
Cуровую and Jax can also alternate casting Alarm and cover sixteen hours of the day where if anybody uses the door we at least are aware of its use.

MY WIFE ASKED ME, WHY DON'T WE EVER HAVE SEX ANY MORE?
It is clear that this is speaking about the Lord's Dalliance as it was the brothel that took only gold. The question is whether "descend as low as you can, hide, and wait" refers to the basement of the "inn" or farther down beyond the magic door we have found.
One issue is that the secret word/passage is likely going to be in dwarven. Cy could research various phrases in dwarven, Xen and Jax could help.
__________
As far as day/night investigation goes. Morsum can stay up all night without a problem as far as I can tell. The only requirement is that I be awake. As I am a dhampir, with a little vampire thrown in, I have no problem staying up all night and watching the common room of the Inn, and thereby keeping Morsum summoned.
My vote is for Dren and Morsum to keep the nighttime watch. Morsum can realistically watch for 16 hours a day. If we have the funds for a ring of Sustenance, I can keep him around for 23 hours a day, although if I were to sit in the Inn common room 23 hours a day, that might look slightly suspicious after a while.
__________
Also, perhaps Cy should head to the local historian or the town hall and do some research on the dwarves. Also, she should research any famous ladies of the night who might be renown.

Elsewhere, Day Four [roll roll roll]:
Jax is sitting painting. By now people are used to seeing him, and nobody comments much.
Then a man comes through the square with a bucket and a brush. He's putting up posters. YE BARD OF BARRINGTON, WILLIAM MARCUS MARLOWE, AND HIS MERRIE MEN! THIS STARDAY AT THE GREAT HALL OF BALENTYNE! THE FALL OF AMBERLYN -- A ROMANTICKAL TRAGEDIE IN FIVE ACTS!
Jax Naismith |
Jax will take a break from painting to go talk to the man.
Hello! I see you're putting up flyers for a play. Pray tell, I'm not familiar with that tale. What could one expect from it? I'm a lover of theatre! Perhaps you could tell me a little about William as well? How are his performances?

Nobody that you talk to has ever heard of the Bard of Barrington. They're interested to see a play, but...
The flyer claims that he's "the toast of the capitol" and has played the Royal Court. You'd want a Knowledge (local) check on that one.

Not only does nobody know the answer, but the pious Mitran soldier (his name is Fredegar) is offended by your vulgarity.
On the other hand, a couple of other soldiers think it's funny. "That dwarf must have been in the Army!" "Hah, sounds like Captain Mott! They say his pretty wife Katlyn is --"
But that brings a passionate objection from Fredegar the devout, and the conversation turns to other matters.

Moving them to neutral is a DC 19 Diplomacy roll, and I see you have a +7. So let's roll that. 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Technically because of Cуровую's trait this is 10, still sucks but quite slightly less so, Bluff would definitely been preferred.

I would like to point out that, as in my statements and comments, it has been Hilzda in contact with the dwarves, not Zhilda.
Cуровую posted that she and Jax would cast Alarm with the silent function on the secret passageway on alternate intervals covering sixteen hours of the day.
Edmin Al'Roth |
Edmin stands and stalks out of the inn at the mention of riddles."Riddle this mother fu..." The shutting of the door drowns out the rest of the Champion's outburst as he moves down the road looking for someone or anything to vent his anger on.
Uhh yeah, has anyone actually told Edmin his bestty is in the keep?

At Zimu's request Xenfal heads out to drink with the dwarves.

So far only the lay deacon, but on day 4 I could pay the chapel a visit again. It may be worth ambushing the Cleric who travels from town to town. Guys?
Cуровую would have strongly advised and insisted that you have a well made disguise and keep you hood on at all times.
Think Strider from Lord of the Rings.
Cуровую does not really know what Edmin's reaction to this may be, for all she knows you may storm the fort Bruce Willis style, she will insist you do no go around without some form of disguise. Perhaps asking Dren for some help with it.
Cуровую зиму |
Let's not get stuck on the door, we know its there, we have it under watch and spell. We know that the town Cleric travels the countryside and we can ambush him before he arrives, Xen has made some purchases that can help us later as well as befriending some of the guards, Edmin's former friend is now head of the clergy in the fort, Dren is following some servants. We should continue our other investigations.

Marlowe is actually moderately famous, and has indeed performed before the Court. It's definitely a little odd for him to be way the hell up here at the Wall -- not unheard of, but this town probably doesn't see a troupe of this caliber twice in a decade.
The Fall of Amberlyn is also moderately well known; it's two star-crossed lovers on either side of a war, type of thing. Does have a happy ending, though.
Jax Naismith |
I can see if I can follow around this Marlowe for a day or two, maybe talk to him after getting some more information. Cimu, or Xen, could you possibly help me find where he is staying?
Know: Local checks to see where Marlowe is staying? I'd expect him to be in the Dalliance but he might be in a private home. We can have Jax follow him around and see if there's any information/anything of use about the bard.

I am drinkig with dwarves already today! and with a 24 diplo i am having a good time so scram jax! tomorrow
Judge Tohram Quasangi |
If/when someone tells the Judge about the bard:
I do not know much about this Marlowe. However, we are chasing a midget bard. I would say that the sudden appearance of a renown bard, and Nimby being in the area, is a bit much for coincidence.
Everyone, keep an eye out for any more information about this bard. Also, nobody is to go to his performance without a top notch disguise in place. If this is not the bard from the ship, then I am sure that the bard from the ship will be somewhere in the area. Heck, it will probably be Nimby using his illusions to put on a performance from a distance just as he did to confuse the Captain during the fight.

It could also be likely that Marlowe and Nimpy know each other. Both are probably accomplished bards by Nimpies power.
Keeping a disguise of another race and size is difficult for long periods of time so I doubt if this bard and Nimpy are the same creature.Maybe this Marlowe is a spy for the kingdom and Nimpy contacted his "friend" to try and locate us or draw us out or discover what we are up to.
We should be careful and do as the judge says, although with all of us staying at the tavern, locating information about us will not be difficult. Perhaps we should move locations and try to find an abandoned dwelling?
Douglas Muir 406 |
amazing!
Seriously. That's the second nat 1 there...
Well, apparently dwarves don't think dwarf jokes are funny! Who knew? You get kicked out the door for 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (1, 5) + 4 = 10 points of nonlethal damage, which probably translates to a wicked black eye, and the dwarves attitude towards you is now Hostile. Also, Barhold the innkeeper says that if you make any more trouble, he's banning you.
Judge Tohram Quasangi |
After Xen returns with a black eye and an apparent warning, Torham simply sighs.
How did the Dark Lord send someone with the diplomatic skills of a troll? At least if he were a troll, then I could rely upon his combat skills.
After mulling over the situation, the Judge finally decides to go over to the dwarf bar to hopefully mend some ill will. When the Judge gets there, he will order the strongest dwarven ale available and then pretend to consume it, while actually using it to water plants, refill other's mugs, and otherwise spill it on the ground.
Bluff: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (15) + 13 = 28
As he is doing this, he will try to make small talk with the dwarves asking about the dwarves of the north and whether they have any specialty crafts that might be for purchase and of interest to a reclusive southern noble. He will also inquire into how long they have been here and how involved they were in the building of the town and the fort as both show signs of fine dwarven craftsmanship.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (7) + 12 = 19
The Judge is not going to take on any special appearance other than that of the merchant seeking northern crafts and artwork for his southern sponsor.
