Let's form a scouting party, say Cуровую, Xen with either Jax or Dren, perhaps with Morsum while the Judge remains in the main tavern.

I can summon Morsum when needed. He will accompany the rest of you since he is quite stealthy and I can speak with him as necessary.

My vote is Xen, Dren, Cy and Morsum. Jax can go if he wishes.

Edmin and I will keep lookout to alert you if anyone goes downstairs. Also, with my social skills, the Judge is probably best equipped to mislead anyone who asks questions.

Also, I love Dren doing the dwarf routine, but he does not speak dwarf. Is there anyone who does?

Female Aasimar Wizard 6 (HP 53/53; AC 18/18/15; CMD 16 Fort +5; Ref +7 Will +8; Init +3; Perception +11; Darkvision 60 ft)

Have to say I love that we are all thinking similar plans, it took awhile for the espirit de corps to set in.

Perhaps Dren can say he is a special dwarven Oracle who was given many blessings but was cursed not to be able to speak his 'own' tongue.

Jax speaks many languages but Dwarf is not one of them. He only has a +8 stealth with no armor, but he can go along.

It's very rare that I have no choice but to let a nat 1 slip by. This is such a case. The worst I can say is that Xen becomes convinced there IS a trap, and spends the night in a twitching frenzy of anticipation.

The door down to the cellar is locked, but it's not a particularly challenging lock, so I don't think we even need to roll for this. The cellar itself is quite large, and quite full -- there are smoked meats, beer barrels, a wine rack, and the like. There are also several rooms that are standing empty -- presumably left over from the days when the Dalliance was in another line of business.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15

1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25

1d20 ⇒ 17

Holy smokes, that's a nat 20 for... who has the +9 Perception? Zimu. And a 19 for Morsum.

Okay, let me think a moment.

Okay. You spend over an hour searching the cellar carefully. And then Zimu announces, "I've found something..."

In one of the empty rooms, there's an otherwise undistinguished piece of wall. But Zimu, placing her hand flat against it, says, "This is dwarven stonework. I've seen its like, years ago, when I was a girl. And... look. There is a fine line here." And there is! A hair-thin crack. "It wouldn't have showed when the door was made, but this is old. A hundred years, likely more." Zimu steps back. "But there is no keyhole. Does it open only from the other side, then?"

She turns and stares intently at the floor. A moment later she says, "There are footprints in the dust. Not ours. Not fresh, but not years old, either."

"Search this room carefully!"

A few minutes pass. Then Morsum says, in his grating voice, "Here..." and points.

On the wall opposite the secret door, a short phrase is inscribed high on the wall. It is very small -- easy to miss if you're not looking for it -- and written in dwarvish runes.

Dwarven speakers only:

MY WIFE ASKED ME, WHY DON'T WE EVER HAVE SEX ANY MORE?

--> I can cast Evolution Surge to grant him Minor Magic/the ability to cast Comprehend Language.

Communicate it to the others, maybe between all of us we can figure out this riddle. Maybe it has something to do with the Priest who is questionable?
Worst case maybe we can post a scout to wait or an alarm spell to help us "catch" who might be using this door and force them to help us.

Actually, he could cast any one of these spells once:

Burning hands, comprehend languages, cure light wounds, detect chaos/evil/good/law, magic missile, obscuring mist, silent image, vanish [APG] (self only), or ventriloquism.

I can use Evolution Surge to let him have a single 2 evolution point Evolution. However, I just reread the evolution and Morsum needs Basic Magic before he can get Minor Magic. I suppose that I could cast Evolution Surge twice, but this is using most of my level 2 spells.

None of these work. (And I'd say that nat 1 means that just mentioning riddles sends Edmin into a black murderous depression.)

To keep things from completely silting up, I'll suggest a (1) quick recheck of the prophecy, and (2) that someone consider: where might that door go, who might have built it, and for what?

The prophecy says 'Where real gold found false love, descend as low as you can, hide, and wait' - We could leave the three most stealthy characters here and see who uses the room?

Presumably the door, in theory goes to the fortress, the dwarves or the former fortress officers/soldiers built it, for a night of paid passion, or perhaps as an escape route/secret pathway that just happened to lead to a brothel, offering another kind of escape.

Which came first the secret door or the brothel?
