@DM - just a little confused. Why are some of us getting a second round of actions?

[Academic now we are in the fight]

Luthia is obviously unhappy with the proposal.

"Tactically, that plan is fine. Strategically, attacking easily a score of foes, and a score of that giants and ogres - is tantamount to suicide."

What am I missing here? Several giants and a dozen ogres, and more orcs than could be counted. No area of effect/magic. Five of us.....

Male Human HP:77/77{} AC:16{} HD 8/8{} INIT +4(+2){} SAVES: STR +4/ DEX +7/ CON +6/ INT +1/ WIS +1/ CHAR -1{}

I believe the idea is that due to the surprise, each of us gets a turn, then we go into Initiative, in which those of us getting a second round are actually just top of the round.

And in response to Luthia, unfortunately I believe the only way this was going to end was a massive fight anyway. Eventually our only option will be to charge into a room of drunken armed Giants, including their leader. We really have no way to avoid a large battle at this point. And I agree, the lack of AOE magic will hurt us, but there is nothing we can do about that unfortunately. At least all the enemies in the room we are approaching are unarmed.

Malaki turns towards Luthia, and offers her a warriors salute, blades crossed before him.

I do not plan to die this day, and no matter our course of action, a pitched battle is inevitable at some point. Better to thin the ranks that could join their Chieftain in battle than charge in, only to be outflanked. Follow my blades and we shall not perish. Into the shadows of war we march.

With that being said, Malaki joins the others in the attack, smiling beneath his hood and Oskar's Blessing runs through him. Charging into the room, he immediately engages one of the Giants, striking before the brute can react!

If Malaki's strikes down the Giantess, he will use Cunning Action to move up to the next Giantess, If his first target is still alive, he will stay in melee with her. I will wait to take his 2nd round of actions until after everyone else has posted their first round.

Just want to note that I agree with Luthia to an extent. I dont doubt that we might end up in a melee at some point, but considering how well stealth was treating us I cant help but wonder if there was a more tactical approach had we explored more. Sort of commited now but maybe we can chat a bit before ths next time....assuming there is one, heh :)

@ Luthia: Malaki has it right. Everyone gets a surprise round. Then everyone whose initiative is higher than any of the enemy gets a round. As for your tactics, I leave that to you.

The first giantess falls to Malaki's blades.

Surprise Round Breakdown:
  • Gain effects of Bless.
  • Enter rage while moving up to a giantess.
  • Declare advantage in melee through Reckless Attack.
  • Choose to take -5 on attacks to increase damage through Great Weapon Master Feat.
  • Attack giantess.

With a feral growl Elwë advances on a giantess and strikes out with his greatsword.

1st Greatsword Attack with Advantage: 1d20 + 1d4 - 5 + 8 ⇒ (2) + (2) - 5 + 8 = 7

1st Greatsword Dice: 2d6 + 5 + 2 + 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (6, 4) + 5 + 2 + (6, 2) + 4 = 29
2nd Greatsword Dice: 2d6 + 5 + 2 + 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (4, 5) + 5 + 2 + (6, 6) + 4 = 32

Please let me know if I'm doing something wrong, but so far I'm taking it as I get my normal damage (2d6+5, weapon dice + str mod + enhancement bonus) plus my rage damage (2) plus my feat's benefits (2d6+4, weapon damage dice + str mod).

If the giantess falls and another creature is within range, he will make his third attack from his feat.

Charging into a room filled with hostiles is not inevitable. Drawing them out and using doorways to contain them would perhaps have exposed us to less attacks...;)

My understanding is that we all get advantage in the surprise round. My question is if we continue to get advantage if we go ahead of them in the normal round.

Point of interest, I think Bless only applies to your attacks rolls, now your damage rolls.

As for bottle necking them, we could still have done such with enough speed. However, if they garner the attention of the others while were in that hallway, we might find ourselves between two hostile forces with no where to go.

Indubitably Never 3d6

Bless applies to attack rolls and saves. Not to damage.

No, you do not get advantage during the surprise round. You get a full round to act. (effects of surprise: How to Play) Malaki gets advantage because of his rogue assassinate ability, and Elwe gets advantage because of reckless attacks.

Again, I make no claims at all about absolute system mastery. If I have missed something, please point it out to me and we'll make sure we get it right.

Elwe: You dropped your giantess, make your third attack

I love ooc tags. And, you guys notice (your characters would, even if the players don't) that the giantesses are going down a bit easier than the giant "guards" in the first room.

Luthia strikes fast and furious, connecting each time, but getting her fists tangled in the giantess's apron, losing much of the force of the impacts.

Elwe has much better luck, hacking down one of the giants in two brutal swings and moving on to a third....

This will add 1d4 damage to each attack, I believe I have to spend an action to start the song.

Proceeding then to the next round...

DM, can I get a description of the room, size, outstanding features, flammables, fires to kick over and tables tp provide cover? And a count of enemies and what is in here.

Indubitably Never 3d6

The room is 40'(N/S)x 60' (E/W). You entered from the east. The west wall is largely occupied by an enormous stone hearth, about 30' wide and 5' deep, where several tree trunks are burning, under giant spits and cauldrons where various giant delicacies are cooking. There is a door in the southern wall about 30' from the entrance, and a 20' wide hall leading north at the western end of the room. Most of the walls are occupied by 6' high counters and storage bins, creating work spaces for the ogres, and leaving a large area in the center of the room where the orcs are employed, mostly with fetching and mixing, apparently. The 5 giants seem to be mostly employed bringing food across the hall, and are all comparatively close to the door.

Elwe, on his second round, cuts down a second giant with his first attack, and moves further into the room, cutting down a third with his remaining attack. Only one giant remains standing.

Malaki is up, then the orcs, then ... I'll have to check.

Edit: Then Luthia, then the giants (if there are any left standing) then Oskar. Then the ogres.

At this point, what you are seeing are looks of absolute shock and consternation. Oskar, no more going into battle with no pants on.

Still utilizing his speed and surprise to best advantage, Malaki used his Cunning Action to engage the last Giantess. Now he brings his deadly blades to bear upon the brute, empowered through Oskar's Blessing and Olden's Song!

3rd Scimitar Assassinate Strike: 1d20 + 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (16) + (1) + 4 = 21

All three strikes land home, and Malaki uses his training and the inspiration from the song to drive his blades home with deadly force!

Scimitar Assassinate Strike with Sneak Attack Damage: 2d6 + 4 + 4 + 6 ⇒ (4, 3) + 4 + 4 + 6 = 21

3rd Scimitar Assassinate Strike: 1d6 + 4 + 4 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 4 + 4 + 6 = 19

Assuming it takes all three strikes to drop the last Giant, Malaki will rise to his full height, blades dripping with blood, and in a harsh tone call out to the Ogres and Orcs in both Common and Giant.
If you foul wretches value your lives at all, drop to the ground and do not rise against us! Else my blades shall dance upon your flesh and your blood shall soak the earth!

If he killed the Giant with two strikes, he would have moved to the closest available target and then struck it down, ending with the same message.

Luthia stares at the dwarf in incredulity.

Has the blood and massacre gone to their heads? Madness!

Are the three ogres bottlenecked/stuck at the southern door getting through/away or can Luthia move to attack them?

Lucia: Yes, the first has gone, but the second two are at the door.

Malaki: I'm taking that as forfeiting the opportunity attack, but you'll likely be backbefore me.

Elwe: Snowpocalypse. Nyuck nyuck. Remember before 24 hour news channels when they'd say "10 to 20 inches of snow expected in parts of (pick your state) overnight. Check for school cancellations tomorrow morning every quarter hour. Back to you, Bob."

You guys are up... the ogres are in full rout.

I'm not sure who all is within range of Elwë to move up and attack so please let me know if the one's heading out the door we just came in our out of his reach as he would not go after them if that were so.

Seeing the ogres charging towards Olden and the way they had all just come from, Elwë rushes after them planning to cut them down through the use of his greatsword. The pure adrenaline of his rage still pumping through his veins, he continues to create his bloody path.

Oskar and Luthia brings down their ogres. Elwe races after the group heading for the great hall, cutting down one and grievously wounding a second, which Malaki finishes off.

The ogres continue to flee, and those at the door to the great hall get it open. Two remain at the south door and three are running down the north corridor. There are two left at the door to the great hall.

Now that it is open you can see that in addition to the mighty hill giant chief, there are some two dozen other hill giants, including his wife, lieutenants, warriors, etc. There are eight more ogres, three grey skinned stone giants and, standing a full six feet taller than the hill giants, a humbly garbed cloud giant. The sound of a giant drinking song has so far drowned out the noise of the battle, but it can't last long.

You have a round in which to act before the ogres alert their masters to the threat.

What type of action is it to close a door? I'm trying to decide what to do with his move action. Could depend on whether or not the ogres dropped too.

Indubitably Never 3d6

Good question, Elwe. It says you can take one action (three attacks, in your case) and move up to your speed. As of this playtest, there's no such thing as "move actions" the way we're used to in 3.x and maybe 4. I'm tempted to say it's a non-action, except these are 18 foot high, ten foot wide giant-sized doors. Let's table the question for now, and see how the rest of the round goes.

The wood elf takes two vicious slashes and another ogre falls. The elf's momentum carries his second swing into a second ogre, biting deep.

PS, Elwe, You do a goofy amount of damage.

Yeah, he's pretty crazy and I just realized that I forgot to add in the extra 1d4 on each of those that he should be doing with Olden's song. Should I go ahead and roll them or let it slide for now?

Edit: Oh and I'm disappointed I've not scored a critical hit yet for the extra 2d6 yet.

Indubitably Never 3d6

Make the rolls.

Also, your damage goofiness is situational. You're hacking things that have pathetically bad AC, and rolling reasonably well, so you're hitting every time. Against a higher AC opponent, you'd be missing more. I was thinking Malaki did silly damage earlier, but it only really gets crazy when the other side hasn't acted yet. Thus far, I'm liking what I'm seeing.

You also have to take in effect that my rolls are not quite as bad as they should be considering I'm getting to take advantage of Oskar's bless right now. So in this particular situation I'm getting away with a lot more than I should be.

First Attack d4: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Second Attack d4: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Third Attack d4: 1d4 ⇒ 1

Hmm...doesn't look like I accomplished much with it considering I doubt 1 extra damage was all I needed to drop one. If it was, then it's possible I just smacked down three ogres in a single round... >.>

To be honest, if it was not for the bless, I might not be continuing to use it as much as I have been.
