Sonya holds her tongue when Rokan asks about the scars that far too many of the buildings bore. Her family had mentioned the 'Late Unpleasantness', but were always fairly cryptic over what exactly had happened in Sandpoint. She was as curious as Rokan to see if Savah or Sabyl might have an answer.

Though smiling through the remainder of the speech, she can't help herself but scoff and cross her arms at the mention of the Scarnetti. "Yeah, that sounds like them all right." She mumbles under her breath.

"I'm sure she'd be happy to help, she was always friendly enough when I had a chance to meet her. You'd probably get along well with her too, E, the Deverins owns a bunch of great breweries in Magnimar."

E pats the mug hanging at his hip with a smile.

"An interesting coincidence. I have coin to spend on great brews! You'll have to make an introduction once the festivities settle down enough to allow me to part with my small metal friends."

Seraka catches a glimpse of the assimilated Shoanti man, and she begins to move to tap Hundred-Feathers on his shoulder. Seeing his reticence, she stops, and glances back-and-forth from Hundred-Feathers and back to Likely-Belor, wondering why her associate doesn't say anything.

"Ya don't say, Sonya? I've seen one of those breweries. Back in Magnimar. Never thought about it being the same people, though."

She frowns at the memory of Magnimar. She would have never had the money to allow herself such a luxury as a good beer. Hells, not even a mediocre one.

Reflexively reaching into her coin purse to count the coins, an old habit picked up from the city, she smiled. She had money now, and she could spend it on whatever the hell she pleased.

"Sounds like a good deal! I'm up for it."

Feeling emboldened once more, Seraka taps Savah on the shoulder to grab her attention.

"You got any recommendations for a girl with shit taste in beer?"

'The Late Unpleasantness'

At Rokan's question of the markings, the mood of both Savah and Sabyl seems to noticeably drop. Savah spits onto the ground and rests a hand on the hilt of one of her blades; Sabyl isn't so obvious, but her mouth thins into a line.

Savah doesn't seem willing to speak, so it's Sabyl who answers, walking with her hands folded into the blue sleeves of her robes.

"Formerly they were the site of decorations. Wood carvings," she says tersely. "Made by a... man..." she seems to struggle in finding a description; Savah chimes in with a short, "I think you mean a monster."

The Tien woman nods slowly. "Perhaps that is more accurate, yes. The carvings themselves were... lovely. The person who created them was not. When proof of his-- true nature-- was revealed, most in the town could no longer bear to have his handiwork on their homes or businesses. Fortunately, the sick fellow is dead now, and good riddance to him."

"Wish I'd been the one to kill him," Savah mutters.

Curry salmon!

Rokan moves to the booth of the Tien woman, who favors him with a huge grin and a hearty helping of her dish. "Hello there! One of the brave warriors of the Sho, eh? You get extra, I hear your people have big appetites!"

The 'civilized' Shoanti man whom had so soured Rokan's appetite sees Rokan being served and seems to brighten, a faint smile flickering over his long face. He tries to catch Rokan's eye several times but is unsuccessful ...I assume? :P

Beer?

Savah's ill mood over the earlier topic seems to have vanished quickly enough. She smirks at Seraka's shoulder-tap and question.

"You don't quit, do ya, tall stuff? Ahh, come on, I'll show you the best stuff at the beer tent-- Mr. Blue there too if he wants. Now, if you're gonna drink like a local, then you want some Magravi cider. Best-kept secret. C'mon, it's this way..."

The mayor finishes her speech, gesturing to a tall man to come to the stage. The man has, actually, a certain resemblance to the man serving up the deer, who so piqued Rokan's nerves... the same jaw, same nose, similar tall and broad-shouldered build. However, his hair is grown out, short but visible, and if he has Shoanti tattoos, they are not visible due to his clothes, which are definitely in the cut of the southerners. He does have the same lack of a smile as the deer-chef, though... and the uniform of a town guardsman, complete with a gleaming brass pin in the shape of the Old Light on his chest.

"I yield to Sheriff Belor Hemlock," says the mayor, as she steps down. The crowd quiets a little from easy cheering, people shuffling their feet and clearing their throats.

Belor's voice is deep and monotone, but it carries. "I would like to remind everyone to be safe around the bonfires tonight. Do not drink to excess, keep an eye on your children, and watch for trailing cloaks and dresses. We do not need another fire."

He pauses, awkwardly, and there's a brief silence over the crowd as people try and figure out whether that was a joke or not. Belor plunges on: "Let us bow our heads and observe a moment of silence for all those who lost their lives in the fire that claimed our old church."

The crowd sheepishly goes along with this, men sliding off their hats and children being shushed. It's clearly not what most of the townsfolk want to be focused on-- they'd rather enjoy the promise of now than the sorrow of yesteryear-- but nobody outright objects. For a minute, the square is more or less silent except for the odd crying baby or muffled cough. Finally Belor lifts his bowed head and says stiffly, "Thank you," before climbing down from the stage and back into the crowd.

The red-headed man Cyrdak takes the stage, much more chipper in comparison to Belor. "Master Lonjiku Kaijitsu is next on the schedule--" (a siiiiiigh runs through the crowd) "--but I'm afraid he was over-eager sampling the cooking this morning, and he is at home. I'm sure we all wish him a speedy recovery. So! You're stuck with me! And since we have so many new faces in town, may I take the moment to invite everyone to the Sandpoint Theatre's coming production of 'The Harpy Queen.' We've a very special surprise... the role of the titular harpy queen is going to be played by no other than..."

Cyrdak pauses, waiting for the crowd's response, then: "Allishanda! Yes, the Allishanda, queen of the stage in Magnimar, celebrated thespian! Here, in our little town. Get your tickets early, get them often, sell them to your friends at a mark-up..."

"YES, CYRDAK," calls the mayor to general laughter. "When I gave you leave to speak, it wasn't so you could just promote your play!"

"Yes, yes," Cyrdak says with an airy handwave. He quickly launches into a patter song retelling of the cathedral's construction-- irreverent, but witty, with numerous lines calling out this or that town notable in friendly jibe. The crowd eats it up.

Cyrdak finishes his performance with a bow. "Now then! The main attraction... the good Father Zantus!"

A middle-aged man with a trim beard takes the stage with a nod to Cyrdak...

More coming later today, but feel free to squeeze in reactions if you like!

Sonya looks a little bit disappointed - she had heard about the same from her family. Most people didn't enjoy talking to it, unfortunately including the locals who had lived through the ordeal and knew the most. Despite her disappointment, she's appreciative of the extra details. Savah's reaction was understandable, though Sonya was just glad the man wasn't around to terrorize the town. "Ah well, at least it's over with then."

Sonya looks pleasantly surprised when Seraka mentions Magnimar, "You spent time in Magnimar? I thought you had traveled with Rokan from the Shoanti lands."

Plaguestone Map | Gallows of Madness Combat Map

Savah thinks the better of the beer tent as Zantus gets on stage. "Okay, let's hear the actual consecration-- then I'll show you the cider," she whispers to Seraka and E.

The rest of the crowd seems to be having similar thoughts. Faces lift expectantly and children are hushed. The sun glitters off the beautiful facade of the cathedral and its impressive stained glass.

Father Zantus clears his throat, raises his hands to get the crowd's full attention, takes a breath to speak...

...and suddenly a woman's scream slices through the air. People look around with confused expressions for the source. A few moments later, another scream rises, then another. Beyond these noises, a sudden surge of strange new voices rises-- high-pitched, tittering shrieks that sound not quite human. The crowd parts and something low to the ground races by, giggling with disturbing glee.

In the wake of the low, sniggering shape you see a stray dog staggering a few steps, blood spraying from its throat. People gasp and pull back from the gory sight, leaving a small clearing around the poor beast. The dog collapses with a gurgle, its throat cut open from ear to ear. As blood pools around its head, the raucous sound of a strange song begins, chanted from shrill, scratchy voices-- seeming to come from all around the square.

Goblins chew and goblins bite!
Goblins cut and goblins fight!
Stab the dog and cut the horse!
Goblins eat and take by force!

Another scream-- another! The crowd begins to move. Mothers snatch up their children desperately, fathers grab anything at hand to protect their families. Belor's deep voice rises above the sudden chaos. "MILITIA! TO ARMS!"

(Mechanics post coming)

Plaguestone Map | Gallows of Madness Combat Map

Savah swears vociferously as the crowd starts to surge in panic. "Weapons!" she yells. "My shop....!"

Drawing one of her own blades, Savah breaks into a run for a building a hundred or so feet away, presumably with some plan of getting weapons for the ordinary townsfolk who are largely restricted to belt knives or farm tools. You see Sabyl sprinting as well, in the direction of a group of graybeards and old grandmothers who had been seated near the stage and are now bunched up in terror.

But there are other forms, more worrying: the tiny, homicidal forms of goblins. Green-skinned, no larger than a human child but more than capable of killing a grown man, what appear to be dozens of the insane, evil little creatures seem to be running loose in the town of Sandpoint. The sounds of breaking glass, barking dogs, and human screams provide mere backdrop for the echoing chants of goblins!

In the midst of the chaos, Rokan looks up from his acquisition of curry salmon, and the others look up as well. A small knot of goblins is visible not twenty feet north of Sonya-- they appear to have squirmed out from beneath the canvas covering of a cart! The little brutes have sharp, wicked knives-- they're slashing wildly (but fortunately not too accurately) at the crowd around them, and laughing wildly whenever they happen to draw blood.

This will sometimes include things like PC saves. If you're concerned I'm forgetting a bonus you have or the like, or forgetting penalties of something you did to an enemy-- or if you're just curious-- you can click on my GM combat spoilers as a general rule. If I specifically don't want you guys looking at a certain spoiler because it may contain meta-gamey info like the presence of an invisible opponent, I will specify Don't Look on that spoiler. Generally, I'll list PCs who may act, etc, and you may go in whatever order you like if you're one of those.

Now up: E, Rokan, and Sonya! Normal round, not surprise.
Conditions: The square is currently full of panicking townspeople struggling to clear out. (Not pictured on map.) We'll be abstracting the crowd as difficult terrain for the first round, at least, so: entire map is currently difficult terrain.

Combat!

Rokan had been on edge (again) since seeing the two Sandpoint "Shoati", and had set his food aside (having lost his appetite) to stand solemnly holding his bow ... one end planted on the cobblestones as he endured the remainder of this town's festival.

And this is exactly why he was so ready when the trouble erupted (even though it wasn't exactly goblins he was expecting).

Suddenly, though, the small killers provide an outlet for his days of mounting frustration. He focuses on the eastern-most, knowing Seraka is likely to want to close on the nearest to her. Hoping to maintain a clear firing lane, he swings wide, to his right, as he draws out an arrow. It comes to his cheek smoothly as he shouts.

"I'll move right to keep fire on them!"

Then he looses. Having to fire through a panicked crowd at small targets ... it has little chance of striking true. Rokan growls in frustration.

Move 6 squares right, one toward the goblins (can someone move Roka? I'm on my phone). Then fire at the green one.

It's difficult terrain, so you could get 3 squares, but Seraka would still be in the way.

"MOVE!" Sonya bellows quite suddenly, as she starts pushing through the terrified crowd. Her hand reaches for the axe on her back, careful not to hit any of the villagers as she swings it out to ready. "Get behind me!"

Being the sole attention of almost half a dozen goblins wasn't exactly something she looked forward to - she swears to herself in Varisian (a habit picked up from her mother), and shouts at the tiny green menaces.
"Hey! Over here!"

With a grimace, she takes a wide stance and readies her axe.

In the press of the crowd, Rokan misses. The goblins screech at E's proclamation. One of them snatches up a half-finished fruit tart that some fleeing townsperson dropped, and hurls it at E. "YOU read a book!! YOU LOSE ALL YOUR WORDS THEN, YOU STUPID UGLY STUPIDFACE!"

The pie splats at E's feet, spattering his legs with crushed and sugared berries. The goblin responsible for this then that realizes he has pie filling all over his fingers, and pauses to lick them clean.

The others aren't so distracted. They race forward, nimbly darting between legs, to answer their armed challengers...

Sonya is ready. Her axe catches the first one to rush forward (red) despite his attempt to duck; the glancing blow doesn't quite fell the little creature, though.

"Goblins race and goblins jump!" he shouts, never mind the gash on his skull.

"Goblins slash, and goblins bump!" screams a goblin woman, hot on the first one's heels.

"Burn the skin and mash the head!" howls a third, racing in to try and fell the Abadaran worshipper.

"Goblins here, and YOU BE DEAD!" chimes in the last-- though her words seem directed at a terrified chicken, which got loose from a cage and is now tearing through the crowd at ankle height. The goblin pursues.

Seraka wrenches herself from visions and wades forward into the midst of the goblins, slinging her bardiche off her back...

The crowd doesn't need much nudging to move, but Sonya's yell helps to clear them out! They rush south, leaving the north of the square largely empty, littered with dropped foodstuffs, cloaks...

E takes two swipes with his blade and his cup, just like his hero Cayden! But, sadly, fails to connect with either. Sonya has no better luck with her greatsword-- the little buggers are nimble as anything!

Rokan worries about being surrounded by the creatures, and moves accordingly-- though the goblin he was worried about seems more intent on the chicken she's chasing than anything else, and continues racing after it as it clucks and flees along the base of the stage.

"Chase the baby, catch the pup!" shrieks the goblin wearing a red scarf, hacking again at Sonya despite his own injury.

"Bonk the head to shut it up!" screams the goblin female next to him, a tattered green child's dress on her scrawny body. She also tries to fell the Abadaran warrior.

"Bones be cracked! Flesh be stewed!" laughs the one facing off with E.

There's a moment's silence, and the three goblins look away momentarily from the battle. "NAZZY!"

The goblin they're shouting at has caught her chicken, and is too busy wringing its neck to answer. Fortunately (?) for the goblin chorus, the one that had formerly been licking his fingers of pie filling races in with both blade and the last line of their doggerel chant.

"WE BE GOBLINS! YOU BE FOOD!"

This time, two goblin blades find their mark-- one hits E and the other Sonya! Rather hard for goblins, at that....

Seraka steps back from the goblin. Five-foot step She glances back over her shoulder, expecting to see several goblins drooling on the ground (as opposed to drooling upright as normal). Seeing the little monsters as vicious and awake as ever, she tilts her mouth to one side.

"Lot better than usual for goblins."

Her lips open just enough to show her teeth.

"I can do better, too."

She stands square before the goblin, her bardiche in one hand as she draws sharp-lined sigils in the air.

"Gorum! Show these beasts who is your favored daughter!"

She casts Divine Favor. Because of Fate's Favored, it's a +2 bonus

He flurries his blade and tankard at the goblin between himself and Rokan.

Two Weapon Fighting, Rapier: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Sorry for the delay!

Luck seems to be favoring the goblins, and not our heroes-- Sonya swings but the goblin ducks at the precise right (or wrong) moment, and the blade goes wide. Rokan sends two arrows into battle-- one goes wide, but the other brings down the red bandanna'd gobbo that Sonya had hit earlier.

(Rokan, you were adjacent to a goblin when you started your bow flurry-- I'm assuming you would have liked to have stepped out of AOO range first, and moved you accordingly on the map.)

E turns his weapons on another goblin, as his first target is gurgling on the ground with an arrow in his green skin, but doesn't manage to connect. Seraka traces a mystic path in the air with her bardiche's tip, calling on the power of warriors past!

Unperturbed by two of their number having fallen, the sadistic little creatures continue their assault, screaming at the top of their shrill lungs.

GM attacks, it's super effective:

Vs Sonya: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Vs E: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Vs Seraka: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

None of the goblins manage to strike this time, however, doing more of a wild flailing than a coordinated attack. Perhaps the red-bandanna'd one was something of the brains of the operation.

Everyone's up!

With the power of her ancestors guiding her, Seraka cleaves the chicken-thief goblin clean in half, spattering gore over the town square and herself. Just like the arena days!

Rokan looses two arrows-- the first catches a goblin in the scrawny gut; it staggers back a step, baring a thin chest to the second arrow-- dead in the heart. The goblin drops like a sack of grain.

The Shoanti warriors have hit their stride! But what of Sonya and E?

Just one goblin left! Sonya, E, go for it!

Combat is over, but I'm keeping it in rounds for tracking purposes; Rokan has taken an action in this round (healing E). E is at -1 so... no action for him, haha. Sonya and Seraka have actions left in this round, which we'll call a fresh "Round 1."

The last goblin falls, and Rokan rushes forward to touch the slender downed form of E. For a moment, there's a breathing space in the middle of all the violence. There are the sounds of violence throughout the town, screaming goblins and humans alike, shrill goblin laughter and the growls and yips of animals. The acrid smell of smoke stings lungs and eyes; somewhere distant there's the sound of splintering wood and shattering glass.... but at least right now, there are no goblins threatening you.

Sonya and Seraka, actions?

Sonya gets up from her knee and offers E a hand to help him up. She glances around the now empty square.
"I wouldn't object, I doubt those goblins came alone - but if that is all that's left, I'd rather it be saved to save someone's life rather than just ease my pain."
