Daemon Son-of-none
I quickly explain to them everything that happened in the town while they where gone and show them the upgrades to the church.
"I would suggest that we hang around until I can refresh my spells tonight, if freeing this creature can net us more power for our search for the book, then I would suggest moving forward with it, I am of course open to suggestions."
Daemon Son-of-none
Vesta will explain everything that happened on the scouting mission.
"Well, perhaps if we need to cause a panic in one place while we attack another that thing in the basement could be useful."
"Yes, Along with the mindless undead that we already have in our service. So is it decided? We wait until I can refresh my spells and see if we can use this creature to further our plans? If not we have only wasted an afternoon and we can head to the city and explore our options there."
Gathroc The Betrayer
"I definitely think we can wait for you to refresh your spells. Not only will that be useful with this creature in the basement, but you could potentially help our infiltration. If possible, I would prepare any spells you have access to that would help us gain access to protected areas and avoid detection. Also, any spells that can deal with guards silently would be useful as well"
DM - Voice of the Voiceless
For clarity - please feel free to prepare solely based on the creature in the basement.
It may not seem it, but Solku is at least a couple of days travel distant - so you'll have more than enough time to renew magic inbetween.
Move on to the next morning and post up your approach to Nyarthond when ready.
Daemon Son-of-none
Oh, If I had know I had a couple of days before they got here I probably would have already done all of this.
I will Cast Glyph of warding on the entryway to the church, specifying undead as to what can pass.
Then I will prepare Circle of Protection Chaos, and Law, as well as Detect Chaos and Law to see if I can provide a bit of protection if the creature proves hostile (I'm pretty sure its not good, and I am evil so I don't know how well Circle of protection against evil would work for me), Tongues to assist in speaking to it, Augury to see if releasing it will be a good thing in the short run, and Dispel Magic to help destroy the glyph if I so desire. (among a few other more normal spells)
After preparing and offering to allow anyone who is interested watch, I go into the room with the glyph, cast Tongues on myself and summon the creature again, I will cast Detect Law, and Chaos and if the creature detects as one set up a protection spell of that alignment around myself and anyone who is watching. Then I will cast Augury on the action of releasing the creature.
DM - Voice of the Voiceless
Able to render town less obviously fortified and beset by the damned = check, though if anyone gets close and sees one of the undead it will give the game away.
Daemon - yeah, I fudged some stuff to make it so that the scout group came back before you went back down to the cellar. Please assume any non-cultist cellar activities were able to be completed unhindered.
The creature appears within the circle once more, and repeats the same words as before. It detects as Lawful and neither Good nor Evil.
Daemon Son-of-none
To anyone with me "This creature appears to be lawful, if we can get it to agree to some terms or a contract we may not need to "control" it per say. There appears to be at least some good that will come from releasing it according to my Augury. I will consider any input as to whether it should be released or not."
To the creature "Can you understand me? Can we come to some sort of agreement, so that if I release you I know that you or your master will not attack or harm us and may help us?"
Vesta Shadowbane
Again, despite the magically enhanced linguistic skills, you are only able to ken a partial meaning "...yes....comprehend....release....master....embrace....eternal..."
Vesta raises am eyebrow as she watches Daemon work. Her typical mask of superiority across her face.
DM - Voice of the Voiceless
Daemon Son-of-none
Nobody expects....
Still working through the teething issues, but should be able to start mapping up most things now :)
Oh gods! Not the... Oh its just a normal map, ok. Is there really another door in the N wall? I don't remember you mentioning that other wise there would have been more exploring.
To the creature "Very well, I will agree to release you if you agree to assist us to the best of your ability for one year and aid us with your masters power in any way possible. If this is disagreeable give me a time limit or some idea of what you will agree to."
Daemon Son-of-none
I will take that as agreement enough, if it tries to go back on the agreement as I see it later then we will just have to see if we can give the betrayer a reason for his name.
Taking that as the creatures agreement I attempt to score the rune that is holding it in place.
DM - Voice of the Voiceless
The creature traverses the small tunnel and ascends through the trapdoor flying on the wings that seem too small for it's bulk. Reaching the open sky, the noises it is making grow in intensity and you see its tentacles and wings begin to rhythmically sway...
"...call....master....too long....free...embrace...reward...???ction"
What are y'all up to while this is going down?
DM - Voice of the Voiceless
The creature moves a little further into the light, stopping in a large open area. It's movements become increasingly agitated and the noises it is making grow in volume.
When it reaches the centre of the open area, the tentacles that serves as it's legs anchor into the soil and it seems to turn it's attention to the sky. Shrill cries and whoops cut through the air as it gesticulates and sermonises to the sky.
"....master....come....ready....vessel....come....embrace..."
Daemon Son-of-none
I step forward hesitantly, unsure of what it meant by vessel, thinking that it may just be a misunderstanding due to the language difficulties of talking to something so alien.
"I am ready for my reward creature, you had better hope it is to my liking."
DM - Voice of the Voiceless
The abomination's form is starting to warp and undulate, as though there were something within waiting to get out....
You get a sense through your tongues spell that the elder thing is laughing "...reward...coming....master...embrace..."
Y'all get a surpise round action (move or standard only) before this gets more interesting....
Also, just restate how far from the elder thing you are...
DM - Voice of the Voiceless
The elder thing's body is torn asunder as a newer, larger, more rubbery form literally bursts forth. The immense three eyed frog like creature lets forth a deep and guttural croak, before rearing up on its hind legs, tentacles waving threateningly in the air.
It looks alot like this.
Before any of you are able to react, it lunges forward, maw agape at Daemon...
Bite: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (8) + 20 = 28 for 2d6 + 10 ⇒ (2, 4) + 10 = 16
Grab ability: 1d20 + 28 ⇒ (14) + 28 = 42
...cradling him in the toothy embrace of it's mouth.
Gabriel: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
Ignac: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Daemon: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Vesta: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
Froghemoth: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
Action Tracker (Round 1): Gathroc, Gabriel / Froghemoth, Vesta, Daemon, Ignac
No map as I'm at work, but will rustle one up tonight. Everyone is about 20-30ft from the beast (except for the honored Daemon), so will need to charge / move up before attacking in melee.
Gabriel Helminth
Round 1:
Gabriel eagerly dives off the top of the building, taking a diving charge at the beast...
+1 ghost-touch claw: 1d20 + 24 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 24 + 2 = 30, for 1d1 + 10 + 5d6 ⇒ (1) + 10 + (5, 2, 6, 2, 5) = 31 Magical S/B damage.
Somebody provide me a flank on this thing before it eats Daemon. I doubt he will enjoy the experience...
Gathroc The Betrayer
Gathroc charges the beast, gripping is blade in two hands and focusing all his might into the blow 1d20 + 26 ⇒ (15) + 26 = 41 Power Attacking Vital Strike for 2d10 + 21 + 1d6 + 2d6 ⇒ (2, 7) + 21 + (6) + (6, 5) = 47
That first 6 is cold damage.1d6 ⇒ 6 Viciousness dmg to Gath. Also moves into flanking with Gabe, or I guess Gabe would move into flankin with me, as I go before him.
DM - Voice of the Voiceless
Gathroc charges forward and strikes a cruel blow with his blade, cutting deep into the rubbery and otherwordly flesh.
As Gabriel dives from the roof of the building, he observes one of the froghemoth's eyes swivel on it's stalk and track his flight downwards. The speed of the diminiutive hand's approach caught it offguard for this strike, but Gabriel has a beady eye levelled at him.
Froghemoth has all-around vision, so cannot be flanked
The creature's tentacles snake out from it's side towards Gathroc and Gabriel.
Tentacle #1 @ Gathroc: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (7) + 18 = 25 for 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Follow-up Grab: 1d20 + 28 ⇒ (4) + 28 = 32 and Constrict 1d6 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11
Tentacle #2 @ Gathroc: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (12) + 18 = 30 for 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Tentacle #3 @ Gabriel: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (1) + 18 = 19 for 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Tentacle #4 @ Gabriel: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (7) + 18 = 25 for 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Gathroc and the Froghemoth are now both grappled
The monstrosity then rears up with Daemon in it's maw....
Swallow Whole: 1d20 + 24 ⇒ (5) + 24 = 29 for 2d6 + 10 ⇒ (6, 1) + 10 = 17 damage
...and the lich disappears into it's belly.
You take 3d6+10 acid damage on your turn each round you are inside.
Action Tracker (Round 1): Gathroc, Gabriel / Froghemoth, Vesta, Daemon, Ignac
Damage Tracker:
Froghemoth - 78
Gabriel Helminth
Scout’s Charge (Ex):
At 4th level, whenever a scout makes a charge, her attack deals sneak attack damage as if the target were flat-footed. Foes with uncanny dodge are immune to this ability. This ability replaces uncanny dodge.
I agree that as far as flanking goes, though, he is out of luck :-/
DM - Voice of the Voiceless
Will edit above post.
I assume you also noticed that I missed the AoOs from reach as you closed and would like me to take those in retrospect as well :P
Gabriel Helminth
Acrobatics to Avoid AoO: 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (4) + 22 = 26.
Please note, though, that Gabriel's Charging AC Vs AoOs is 36, thanks to mobility (38 normally).
Vesta Shadowbane
"I knew it." Vesta thinks to herself. Not that she knew it was an elder creature, but she assumed this would go badly. She's suprisingly morose for a ghost (sarcasm tag).
WIth that she releases a few pieces of her extoplasm that seem to burst from her outstretched hand and catch blue flames as they go. (Magic missile with some pizazze.)
MM Damage 5d4 + 5 ⇒ (1, 1, 3, 3, 2) + 5 = 15
Daemon Son-of-none
As I am getting swallowed I scream in rage at the betrayal of the creature.
Paralyzing Touch: Any living creature a lich hits with its touch attack must succeed on a Fortitude save or be permanently paralyzed. Remove paralysis or any spell that can remove a curse can free the victim (see the bestow curse spell description, with a DC equal to the lich’s save DC 20). The effect cannot be dispelled.
DM - Voice of the Voiceless
The froghemoth shudders slightly as the cold touch of death invades him, but fights off it's effects.
Daemon takes: 3d6 + 10 ⇒ (5, 3, 2) + 10 = 20 acid damage from stomach juices.
Fort Save: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (14) + 12 = 26
Ignac's blade strikes true and cuts into the beast. The electrical discharge does not harm the creature - though it's actions seem more sluggish.
Action Tracker (Round 2): Gathroc, Gabriel / Froghemoth, Vesta, Daemon, Ignac
Damage Tracker:
Froghemoth - 115
Gathroc - just a reminder you are currently grappled, so cannot take any action requiring two hands...
Daemon Son-of-none
Dagger 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17 damage 1d4 ⇒ 4
Gabriel Helminth
Round 2:
Gabriel scuttles across the surface of the massive beast, looking for a weak spot, before punching with all his might!
As per the grappled condition, Grappled creatures cannot take AoOs, so the Froghemoth probably should not be able to AoO Gabriel?
Just in case, though, here is an Acrobatics check: 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (5) + 22 = 27.
+1 ghost-touch claw: 1d20 + 24 ⇒ (4) + 24 = 28, for 1d1 + 10 + 5d6 ⇒ (1) + 10 + (3, 4, 4, 4, 2) = 28 Magical S/B damage.
