DM Shisumo |
Strength: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
The brush barely slows him down, and he plows forward, lumbering up to the bushes where Lysander and Aerel were just hiding. He squints into the leaves, looking for their trail.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
He spots it almost immediately and shoves through the branches - Aerel looks up and sees the brute standing at the top of the ravine, just a few short steps from him. Lysander scrambles up the ravine on the far side, just as the second ogre reaches the log and tries to push it the rest of the way aside.
Strength: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
She quickly moves up to try to follow the trail through the bushes.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
With her massive companion visible beyond, the path is easy enough for her to find.
Aerel, you again.
Iteb Ral-gri |
Iteb looks at Bunko, then back to the unaware bull. "Aye, might be able to get a surprise on it, but still..." She shrugs, "I'd prefer to wait and see if others return. Maybe wait and see if it go away? If others return first we can try as group." She looks back to the Aurochs and then to her bow in consideration. It's clear her orcish nature wants the fight.
DM Shisumo |
Several long moments pass, then a stray shift of breeze carries your scents to the aurochs, which lifts its massive head to stare toward you. It lets out a whoof of air through its nose, causing swirling eddies in the morning mist, eyeing you warily for a few moments, then slowly turns and begins to trot into the forest.
Looks like waiting isn't an option, unless you plan to try to track it later.
Bunko Derwerrid |
"Oh...f**k it," Bunko says as the aurochs begins to leave. He raises his crossbow, takes aim, and squeezes the trigger...
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6
...striking the beast square in its side!
Aerel Truthseeker |
OK, the mark of slavery trait says that I take a -2 penalty on any skill check or attack roll make before the end of my next turn (which would be this one) unless I am retrying the same check. I read that to mean that I'm in the same boat as last round with regards to penalties and will proceed under that impression.
Aerel attempts to cross the ravine, hopping from stone to stone and keeping his momentum as much as possible.
Acrobatics (untrained): 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 3 - 2 = 17
Aerel once again tries to resort to finesse on his way up the ravine, the presence of the ogres providing plenty of motivation. As he scrambles over the lip of the ravine, he sees Lysander and gasps, "C'mon! They're right behind me!"
Now, do I still incur a penalty after succeeding at the check? The description is silent, so I think probably so. Boy, I hope I get to roll for some trained checked before I die here!
Aerel tries to slip through the vines and on deeper into the forest beyond.
Escape Artist (untrained) DC 12: 1d20 + 3 - 2 - 2 ⇒ (6) + 3 - 2 - 2 = 5
However, he has even less luck than Lysander in getting past the clinging foliage.
Iteb Ral-gri |
Really loving this split aren'tya Shisumo xD-- sorry, internet down all day. Could have replied six hours ago.
Iteb reveals a beaming gleam of cheer about her face as the gnome fires her crossbow bolt, readying an arrow and loosing it as well.
Longbow: 1d20 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (11) + 4 - 2 = 13
Dmg: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
After this, she keeps a hold of the bow in one hand, while rapidly gaining a stone warhammer in the other.
DM Shisumo |
Iteb's hand shakes a bit as she looses - the relic of her empty belly - and the shot shoots just over the aurochs' shoulder. The massive beast turns back to face the orc and gnome, and with a booming squeal of rage, lowers its head to charge.
Trample damage: 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (1, 1) + 9 = 11, Ref save DC 17 half (but don't forget your -2 penalty). If you have a melee weapon out, like Iteb does, you can forgo the save to instead make an AoO at a -4 penalty (-6 total, including half-rations).
You guys.
Bunko Derwerrid |
Reflex, hangry: 1d20 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 1 - 2 = 3
Bunko tries to roll out of the way as the aurochs bowls over the two of them, but ends up being clipped in the side by the creature's horn. He grimaces in pain as he reloads his crossbow and fires at the beast again.
Ouchie. Take a 5' step so we can't both get trampled as easily, reload, and fire.
Ranged Attack, hangry: 1d20 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (6) + 4 - 2 = 8
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5
Bunko curses as the shot goes wild, his vision hazy from the blood loss.
Iteb Ral-gri |
Iteb screams back as she walks into the trample, all for the sake of a chance to hit the beast.
Hammer: 1d20 + 5 - 4 - 2 ⇒ (6) + 5 - 4 - 2 = 5
Hammer Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Afterwards, she drops the bow, stepping towards the large creature instead of away from it, as Bunko did (presuming as she's still using ranged), and quickly pulls a Bronze Light Pick at her side to her offhand. She attempts to get another pair of strikes on the beast.
Hammer: 1d20 + 5 - 2 - 2 ⇒ (5) + 5 - 2 - 2 = 6
Hammer Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Pick: 1d20 + 5 - 2 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 5 - 2 - 2 = 19
Pick Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Iteb Ral-gri |
Stepping out of the way of the massive bulk as it barrels toward her, she attempts to stab the pick into its side. Regardless, she goes back around in an attempt to club one of the legs with the warhammer.
Pick: 1d20 + 5 - 2 - 2 ⇒ (19) + 5 - 2 - 2 = 20
Pick Damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Hammer: 1d20 + 5 - 2 - 2 ⇒ (10) + 5 - 2 - 2 = 11
Hammer Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Bunko Derwerrid |
Now at close range, Bunko drops his crossbow in favored of his hooked hammer, and steps up next to the massive bovine. He swings his hammer, aiming to strike the aurochs squarely between the eyes.
Attack, hangry: 1d20 + 6 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 6 - 2 = 8
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
DM Shisumo |
Climb: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
That time is even worse, and his sister? mate? both? snorts a high-pitched twitter of a laugh at the giant's expense.
Climb: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Didn't see that coming... Lysander, you're up. You can find the link to the chase map here.
Iteb Ral-gri |
Iteb will, assuming Bunko's strike fails to put it down, step back toward her dropped bow. Dropping her other two weapons, she picks it up and tries to take a single shot down at the distant Aurochs with hope to avoid a chase through the forest if possible.
Longbow: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Dmg: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Lysander the Swordsman |
Reflex: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 - 4 = 20
Knowledge(Arcana): 1d20 + 5 - 4 ⇒ (16) + 5 - 4 = 17
Lysander is able to easily dodge the vines then, with his decades of experience, recalls some tricks to slip through the clutches of the Wyvern that appears in his path.
Bunko Derwerrid |
Bunko stumbles a bit as the aurochs crashes to the ground, wincing as he clutches the place where the beast caught him. "That'll leave a mark," he says, pressing his hand to the wound to help staunch the blood. "You alright, Iteb?"
Iteb Ral-gri |
"Ye'. Good fight." Iteb congratulates triumphantly. She seems to encourage herself being fine despite the clear limp she displays as she goes to fetch all of her weapons... planning to walk it off most likely. Moving over to the Aurochs, she looks through her bag for tools. "Same suggestion as before, wait for others and take little time to clean meat. Give them chance to catch up."
Aerel Truthseeker |
The mark of slavery trait is in effect again. No penalty to retry the escape artist check. Here goes:
Escape Artist (untrained, half rations): 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (5) + 3 - 2 = 6
Facepalm
Reflex save to get past vines (half rations, mark of slavery): 1d20 + 3 - 2 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 3 - 2 - 2 = 3
Seriously?
Aerel struggles in the vines, actually going airborne for a moment, no doubt providing the ogres with more to chuckle about...
Aerel Truthseeker |
DM Shisumo |
Furious, the larger ogre tries again to climb the slope.
Climb: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Climb: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
I seriously don't know what to say. As for covering fire, Lysander, the maximum distance you can see in a forest of this type is 2d8 ⇒ (4, 2) = 6 x 10 feet, and you are currently 90 feet away. So no, at the moment, you are 30 feet too far (one card, basically) to be able to give covering fire. If you decide you want to go backward, leaving a card in either direction is the same roll, so if you want to do it, you can.
Aerel Truthseeker |
[spoiler=Group]Replying in elven, "Not my best moment, my friend. These cursed vines have tied me up but good! Don't you come back and get caught - just let me know how you got through so easily!"
DM Shisumo |
Lysander holds, unable to find a way back to Aerel, is forced to wait and see whether his friend can free himself.
The ogres continue to struggle up the hillside. Finally, though, the female makes it up, looming over Aerel.
Ogre's Climb: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
She pulls free the massive club on her back, and raises it threateningly.
Aerel. Now is your moment, sir.
Aerel Truthseeker |
Please forgive me. I kept forgetting to come back here after I saw it was my turn.
The mark of slavery trait is in effect again. No penalty to retry the escape artist check or the reflex save as I have failed them both. Here goes:
Escape Artist (untrained, half rations): 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (6) + 3 - 2 = 7
This is an amazing string of rolls...
Reflex save to get past vines (half rations): 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (11) + 3 - 2 = 12
Well, at least it was a double-digit roll. It was nice knowing you.
DM Shisumo |
Her companion climbs after her, or tries to.
Climb check: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Climb check: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
Although when he finally makes it to the top of the ridge he has no weapon readied, it's all too easy to imagine what he might be able to accomplish with his bare hands.
Lysander can do something now if he wishes... before things start to get bad for Aerel.
Aerel Truthseeker |
The dice have spoken. I apparently have offended them with this character in some way. I appreciate your efforts!
DM Shisumo |
Back from GenCon, and feeling something closer to human finally.
The female ogre raises her club, then brings it down heavily toward Aerel. The archer tries to dodge aside, but the club catches him a "glancing" blow that sends him flying into a nearby bush, ribs shattered.
Greatclub attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16, damage: 2d8 + 7 ⇒ (6, 3) + 7 = 16
Aerel, you can go now.
Aerel Truthseeker |
I'm not dead yet! The mark of slavery trait is in effect. No penalty to retry the escape artist check or the reflex save as I have failed them both. Here goes:
Escape Artist (untrained, half rations): 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 3 - 2 = 5
And so it continues...
Reflex save to get past vines (half rations): 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (12) + 3 - 2 = 13
Not enough, more's the pity. Both of my hit points and I await the verdict of the dice. Which will it be?
"Lysander! Just run! There's nothing that can be done for me now! Avenge Phaendar and kill some hobgoblins in my name!"
DM Shisumo |
The male ogre reaches out to grab Aerel, his massive hands large enough to circle and crush the elf's head. The ogre raises the struggling archer high into the air, laughing a hideous and guttural laugh, before beginning to squeeze...
CMB check - no AoO due to reach: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23
Lysander. If you want to just run and leave Aerel to his fate, we can move on, or you can stick it out and watch (and maybe try to get back to intervene) in case you think there's still hope...
Lysander the Swordsman |
Lysander remains rooted to the ground, watching from a distance. He glances back and forth a few times. I can't just leave him. I'd be a fool to try to help him. But I can't just run. But I'd probably die too if I go back. After what seems like an eternity, he comes to a decision.
Stealth: 1d20 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (7) + 1 - 4 = 4
Knowledge(Arcana): 1d20 + 5 - 1 ⇒ (9) + 5 - 1 = 13
Lysander dashes back, forgoing stealth but managing to use his knowledge of the arcane to slip past the Wyvern. "Hold on Aerel! I'm coming!
I've used a double move this turn, but for the future, can I attack from here, or do I have to get onto the same 'square' of the chase map?
