Cats strikes again, this time using clenched fist, at the grappled foe.

1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 + 2 = 17 to hit;
1d3 + 2 + 1d6 ⇒ (3) + 2 + (2) = 7 nonlethal damage.

The rumbling of the earth fades as the earthquake comes to an end.

From the door to the next chamber Fearless begins screaming about bodies.

Near the fight a sharpened fork lefts from the instruments among the table and hurls at the Doctor and The Mariner, passing just by their heads!

Brother Butterfly channels energy, but his power seems to be weakening.

Pinkie stabs the Doctor with his glass knife. Cats gives it a haymaker to the jaw. The Mariner jabs his bone into the creature again and again. It gurgles on blood and finally goes limp in his arms.

With the exception of heavy breathing from those worked up from the fight and the arcane rambling of The Twin, dungeon is quiet.

Cats slumps down to his knees, catching his breath. He takes the razor out of the doctor's hand and, taking another breath (in case someone wants to stop him), draws it across the doctor's throat.

"This needs to be done. Is everyone o-cat? Brother? Fearless?" Cats asks, then turns his attention to the angry, grappling giant (Mariner) and Pinkie. "Are you alright? Can someone check on the big mouth over there? He talked tough, but never came out to help us. Maybe he's not well."

Cats tries to remember something important (like a room full of bodies next door) but instead takes a moment to gather himself.

Fearless begins to mumble at the horrific sight as he stumbles back into the room.

"So may bodies. They just drop them down a chute. Doctor... Doctor Lovelan...." He mumbles as he points to the room to the east.

"You need to see this." His teeth chatter.

Brother Butterfly thinks for a second, but doesn't stop Cats. Instead...
Thank you Cats for doing the job that needed to be done. You are right in that she-he-it was crazy as a sun-dome in a vampire's house.

Great job Mariner, and Pinkie and Fearless - you saved our lives.
And as I walk toward the east, I am certain that we are going to see evidence that we were all going to die.

Brother butterfly moves to the other room that Fearless is pointing to. Shaking his head at what will obviously be a tragic loss of human life. His posture and body language show a saddened fatigue, as he steels himself for what he is about to see.

Desna, let me do what good that I can to the living. Then, I will attend to the dead.

The chamber to the east is as gruesome as Fearless claims.

The smell of rot and decay is nearly overwhelming, and the buzz of flies hangs in the air. To your right a flight of rickety, wooden steps climbs toward the high ceiling. At first glance they seem like the best way out, but collapses wood and stone fill the area above. A passage to the north has suffered a similar fate and is impassable.

Across the room a broad chute extends diagonally up through one of the dungeon's half-crumbled stone walls. Beneath it lies heaped more than a dozen mutilated humanoid bodies. Some are patients and orderlies, a couple are guards for the Royal Accuser. Sprawled half-buried near the bottom is Doctor Lovelan, flat eyes staring lifelessly from her pale face.

Fearless steels his mind as best as he can as he takes a deep breath. Taking a few steps into the room he looks through the bodies for any useful weapons or equipment that they might use.

Tons of time for people to respond...

Cats wipes off the razor after slicing the throat of the not-doctor, taking to his feet again. Instead of following Fearless to the room of horrors, Cats goes the other way...moving to the table/chest(?) and around the corner, with razor in hand. Will move on map when I get to computer, but definitely going that way.

1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24 Perception

He passes the room of the weirdly chanting/meditating Twin with only a small glance.

The Mariner drops the limp alien body. Looking down, he sees his blood soaked hands holding a chicken bone; the realization send him reeling against wall, "I'm not dreaming?! -I'm not dreaming!" Moments later, when he comes to and sees the lolling head of the dispatched thing, he grabs two cutting tools and swipes all the remaining off the tray into a cloth. He moves by Brother Bald and pats him on the head, not in thanks, more making sure he wasn't another thing; then hands him the shivs to pass around. The Mariner then creeps over with Cats to look around the blind corner, slipping in the Campre's blood as he goes.

As the group deals with the shapeshifter, the Twin finishes his incantation as the swirling harrow cards take shape into a snake-like creature, coiled in front of the half-elf in lotus position.

Opening his eyes, the Twin looks at the creature and smiles. "Welcome back, strange friend."

Standing up, the Twin looks to see that the other inmates are regrouping. He strides out and looks at the carnage. "You all seem to have done as you wished and the outcome seems to be favorable." he comments.

Seeing Mariner and Pinkie, the Twin is surprised. "I was sure you were going to be dead."

As he looks at the unconscious Campre, the Twin scowls. "Why have you not slit his throat too? He is on the evil creature's side." he states plainly, looking about for a tool to finish the job.

Okay The Twin calm yourself down. No one is killing an unconscious and defenseless Orderly. We just got done with one life and death struggle- we don't need another one.

positioning himself to talk with everyone in the group.

Now everyone of us here is in this place for a reason! Let's not fool ourselves, we are not in Absalom eating lobster and acting like rich and powerful people. We are in an insane asylum in the country of Ustalav. Insane people just AREN’T meant to get along, so I know it’s not going to be easy to get along with each other. Let's park our expectations right there.

We are screwed in a screwed-up place; in an asylum that's gone to hell. Add that to the fact that most of us are starving from not eating for a couple days.
Now that I set the stage and the appropriate expectations; we all need each other to survive and live.
#1: All of you need me because I can detect and help fight off ghouls.
#2: I am certain I can detect these (pointing to the pseudo-people) things.
#3: If any of us are bleeding or hurt, we can be healed by Desna. Since she uses me to do it- you need me.

But I also know I need each of you for your strengths and for your weaknesses.
I know everybody here is broken in some way. And I'll have to deal with your brokenness; just like you'll have to deal with the three of us (pointing to himself and Cats and Fearless).

For we have already banded together as The Watchmen. Called such, because we protect each other from the nightmares and from the ghouls and anything else we encounter. If you'd like to join us we will accept you as family. But if you want to go it on your own, it'll be hard to befriend us again as these "fake" creatures can take your identity and will come back and try to hurt us. For our own safety.

Make your decision fast because these earthquakes make me nervous and I want to get above ground soon.

I'd also like to get to a safe place to have a nice shave. Because the world is always better after some good grooming.

Brother Butterfly will hand out the shivs to everyone except The Twin - until Campre is up and capable. At some point, He is going to try and borrow the straight razor from The Cats and start shaving with some "created water in a bowl or barrel".

Cats grunts agreement from his rifling through the table/chest, and almost recoils at the idea of the Twin as 'family', but decides to let it go. The crazy man is likely to be dead soon...of likely picking a fight with the Mariner or some such and he shouldn't be too worried about it.

Family? Sure. Like a family of wild cats.

Peering around the corner The Mariner discovers an iron furnace hunker in the corner of the basement, its four-foot-square door gaping half open. The shadows within indicate its fires have gone out.

Anyone inspecting the furnace - Perception DC 12:

You see several scorched humanoid bones amid the ashes, easily from a half-dozen bodies.
If your perception check was 16 or higher you can open the "Secret" spoiler below.

Secret:

The vents leading up and out of the furnace are particularly wide, so much so that a Small creature could easily fit inside, while a Medium creature could fit by squeezing. Regular seams and offshoots within the duct make it scalable with a successful DC 5 Climb check.

The dungeon has a few sources to equip yourselves. Cats opens the chest in a nearby alcove and finds a cache of various weapons. The Mariner finds a pile of trash, soiled linens, discarded clothes, and other random flammable items near the furnace. Fearless notices that some of the bodies near the chute still wear useable armor. Last, but not least, Pinkie searches the shape changing creature and finds 3 potions clearly labeled as "healing" in the pockets of its doctor's gown.

Anyone inspecting the pile of near the furnace - Perception DC 16:

A masterwork viol is buried among the soiled clothes and garbage of past victims near the furnace. The bow is missing, but the instrument is, remarkably, undamaged.

The potions are free. Otherwise, everyone can equip themselves as you if you had 150 starting gold. ;)

Hearing that food was found, Brother Butterfly takes a small enough morsel to satisfy his grumbling stomach. He has an itching - literally all over his body - that must be solved now that imminent danger has passed. More of a priority than eating or grabbing equipment, shaving his head and face (except his curling mustache) and arms and legs must be done.

He does this around the company of the others, as they find and put on their own equipment. Brother Butterfly is content with grabbing the "left overs". He is meticulous in his approach. While he doesn't remember ever having shaved before, the muscle memory of thousands of previous times shaving allows him to shave without a mirror. Going over each spot twice. Having been at least 3-5 days with uninterrupted hair growth leaves reddened splotches as the sharp straight razor irritates the skin. When done, he probably looks more like a Leper than a cleric of Desna. With the skin chapped and irritated, he moves his hands along his angry skin trying to rub and calm it.
But even with the itching, redness and chapped skin -- Brother Butterfly smiles. A gleaming white smile of pure joy and happiness.
Brother Butterfly may be slightly overweight, have blotchy skin, stink from combat, and be naturally ugly..... but when he smiles - that's where his exceptional charisma is. And all his other physical detriments seem to melt into the background.

he thinks to himself: Nice Pinkie! Now that we have 3 other sources of Healing, and I feel better - it's time to see if Desna wants Campre healed and awake.

The Twin listens to the bloviating man with dispassion showing on his face. He seems to take time to listen to Brother Butterfly as he moves about the room, finding a chain shirt in the room and pulling it over his head.

As the tiny links chink down over the stained white tunic, the Twin opens his mouth for a second as if to speak but he closes it without uttering a syllable. As he moves through the varied stuff on the floor, the harrow card-composed snake slithers around behind him, coiling up whenever the half elf stops to pick through the mounds of stuff.

As the shaved stock card tongue flicks out of the snake-creature's mouth, its head perks up and it burrows through the pile and comes out with a leather pouch.

GM:
Would this be where I can procure a Harrow Deck?

The snakes pushes it into The Twin's hand as the man looks happily, unclasping the leather thong that binds it. "What did you find, Mister Snake?"

Opening the pouch, he pulls out a brace of five weighted daggers. "Hmm... these will be useful."

He straps the brace to his chest, over the chain shirt, before looking directly at Brother Butterfly. "You have said your piece and I am still here. We have a similar goal for now." he says, the ravens illustrated onto his hand seemingly dancing across his flesh.

"However, I don't listen to your goddess or follow your strictures. Campre has gleefully taken pleasure in harming me over and over and I promised him his death in return." he says, still lacking in emotion. "I will offer you his life in exchange for a favor in the future." he says as the large, but nearly weightless snake slithers up over the shoulder of the Twin, resting its head.

"You been holding out on me! I knew it!" he charges into the pile of dried food and begins to stuff his face as he hadn't eaten an entire day.

As he is eating a few items of interest catch his eye. One is a tiny glinting prismatic crystal. Something that seems to call for him. Another is a beat up hand crossbow with a smattering of various bolts.

Digging through the pile a bit more he holds up a masterwork Viol for any who might use such an instrument. The bow is missing but otherwise undamaged.

Finding a small pack with only a couple tears in it Fearless begins to load up all that he can, not donning any sort of armor for himself.

Looking around he doesn't let a single crumb touch the floor as he stuffs his face. He peeks up into the furnace as he thinks.

Without giving it a second thought Fearless jams the rest of his food into his mouth, making him look like a chipmunk storing for winter. He scampers up the pile and leaps into the furnace's vent as he begins to climb and scale it to the surface.

Speaking to The Twins.
Interesting idea. A future favor in exchange for a person's life.

I think that is an arrangement that Desna will find acceptable. As long as the favor is not evil or requires an act that would denounce my faith- I accept your bargain.

As for my preaching, I can say that you will hear me preach a lot. That is what I naturally am - a preacher for Desna. With that said, you don't have to believe in Her to see her impact and I will not try to actively convert anyone in this group.

Cats rifles through the chest after he finishes up the majority of his first dwarven ration. He takes his time with his second rifling through, taking a backpack and beginning to stuff it full of odds and ends.

He offers a triumphant "Catrueka! I found it!" and holds up a shaver's kit. He stows it away before Brother tries to wrest it from him.

He stuffs in more dwarven rations, then some regular rations, then a flint & steel and then more odds and ends. He takes his time to fit a worn set of studded leather to his body. He picks up a short sword on a belt that he wraps around his waist. A shortbow, with 50 arrows, is split between a quiver and his backpack. A nice cold iron dagger also goes at his waist.

He seems happiest about the food and shaving kit, however nice the armaments are. He walks over to The Twin & Brother Butterfly.

Well now that we're a band together--- I need to bring up something.
I don't mean to be gruesome, but to those outside these rooms, we are crazy.
Plus we're leaving an area that has a bunch of dead, murdered bodies. Anyone we meet would immediately assume that WE are responsible. Campre might be able to attest that we are innocent. It's good to have a plan B.

I think it's prudent that we take something from the "facestealer"'s body to prove that it wasn't us murdering and causing mayhem.

BB is interesting in what people have to say about his idea of chopping off a body part, but also keeping an ear out for any reports from Fearless and his trek climbing the chimney.

The Twin listens to Brother Butterfly a bit more closely as he finds the man to at least be amenable to his proposition.

"Then I..." he starts responding, but is cut off by Cats.

Hearing his objection, but choosing to ignore it, the Twin resumes speaking. "Then he shall live and my favor from you remains outstanding."

As he talks, he fidgets with the leather pouch and finds a false bottom. The half elf pries out the leather slightly and smiles as he sees a rare prize, but chooses to merely replace the strip and attach the leather bag to his new belt.

"As for the explanation, we should just burn the bodies and leave under cover of darkness. I doubt there is anyone seeking to save us, let alone investigate this place." The Twin offers.

"What are your thoughts, Sailor and Pink?" he asks, curious as to his silent 'friends' and their thoughts. "I'm sure Cats will provide us with his opinions as well. Hopefully he keeps the usage of the word 'cat' to under 50."

"Maybe...*yawn*..." Cats looks at the chest and thinks about climbing inside for a nap. He likes boxes.

After putting a bit more gear into his backpack, Cats is ready to move on.

He shuffles over to the stove, ready to follow people up. He slings his bow over his shoulder before he goes up and unslings it when he gets to the top. Usually, the bow will be in hand...which makes Cats feel comfortable. He learns that he *likes* having his bow in hand. It feels like he's used to it...but he doesn't know why.

He will follow Fearless up the stove chute when it is his turn.

The duct Fearless emerges from opens into a tight but traversable crawlspace. A heavy iron door is partially opened already, allowing those who climb from below to enter a room beyond.

Mighty iron boilers crouch over the crawlspace here, their pipes piercing the walls and ceiling. Shadows and rust fill the narrow gaps between the cold tanks. I'd love to hear the name of the person that "can take away all the nightmares".
Pinkie, while we can't take the nightmares away, we do watch over each other and wake that person when we notice them tossing or turning. It's helped a ton. That's one of the main reasons we call each other watchers or Watchmen.

Speaking of which, fellow Watchmen need our support topside, let's get a move on.

Brother Butterfly grabs a few items, like torches, a set of clothes, food, backpacks, and belts. He even smiles at a couple great finds. It must have been Desna's luck that one of her followers would find some hardened Scale Mail. None of the others took heavy armor, and so he got the best of the lot. He grabs a short sword and a morning star. But, the real find is the very small mirror that only has a crack in the upper right corner. He folds the mirror into some cloth as careful padding.

He then goes to the Facestealer and it's body. He takes a couple quasi-skilled hacks at it's neck. Trying to separate the head from body, he uses the coup-de-gras slice that Cats gave it as a guideline. He even had the foresight to position the opening of an empty backpack under the head. When the neck tendons finally give and the head rolls into the bag, Brother Butterfly looks really grossed out at all the blood and guts and gore.

Noticing the spots where he has blood stains on his newer clothes. he makes mental notes as he goes towards the boiler chimney. Intending to climb when appropriate, he ties some rope around the two bundles of backpack. leaving them on the floor The other end of the rope around his waist.

The short sword is left near the FaceStealer's body.

Brother Butterfly's magic heals Campre's wounds enough to wake him. With a startled cry he jerks violently against the bonds that still tie him to the torture table. Looking about like a wild animal he soon. realizes that his captor is dead and that the patients have gotten free and armed themselves. "Hey! What's goin on here! Get these off me! Get 'em off!" He pulls at the restraints.

Meanwhile, up the vent..

Looking for the source of the light, Fearless ducks down to peer beneath the boiler and discovers a strange creature. About the size of a cat, it is an amalgam of beast parts with a rat's tail, simian appendages, and a mole-like nose with wriggling tentacles. The light he was looking for shines from its glowing white eyes. It chitters like a rat and Fearless spots two other gleaming sets of red eyes a moment before two dire rats scurry forth, hissing angrily.

Fearless lets out an ear piercing shrill scream that would make a fog horn proud as he scurries away from the rats.

"AAAAAAAIIIIYYYYYYEEEEE"

He hopes someone heard him and comes to help. His eyes roll back into his head as the glowing eyed rat stares back at him. His fractured mind takes root once again as it aims to protect itself.

Brother Butterfly unties Campre from the table.
We are friends and not foes. Check your wounds, I have healed some of them.
Those (pointing to the Facestealer) want us dead. They have killed dozens in the other room. If you take a moment, you can smell the stench of death.
This is now life and death for the survivors, so I suggest that you step in line and let me lead.

I attacked with the zoog out of order. I don't think it changes much, but I'll adjust for it now.

@BB: From posts it appears there were two channels that included Campre, for 4 and 6 healing.

Campre rolls off the table, ready to fight, but Brother Butterfly's words get through enough to make him see reason. "You are leadin this group of nutjobs? Fine, better you then me I suppose. Watch out for that one with the card on his forehead though. In my experience, wizards are fools messing with the natural order. Crazy wizards are dangerous fools. And he's a gods damned psycho." He moves to the chest to grab a club, and turns sharply at the screams coming from the direction of the furnace. "That one of your madmen?"

Meanwhile, in the boiler room above...

Cats squeezes out of the crawl space and fires an arrow at a rat, but its close proximity to Fearless foils his aim and the arrow misses.

Since he has traded his interest in Campre, the Twin finds the man completely uninteresting and moves past the sputtering man, moving towards the boiler passage.

When Fearless yells, the Twin scowls at the thought of squeezing into the small, cramped heating vent, but Cats quick reaction leaves him little choice.

"Go aid them for now, my friend." he says to the snake riding on his shoulders as he blesses the creature with magical armor. "Give them my regards."

30' move towards boiler and then Mage Armor; eidolon doubles moves and uses climb speed top climb up the vent to join Cats and Fearless.

Heeding the terrified scream Battlecry of the Watchmen, The Mariner crawls into the furnace and up into the vent. The Twin's serpent eidolon follows, and is followed in turn by Pinkie.

The vent is 20' long. The Mariner is near the top, followed by the eidolon, then Pinkie.

Brother Butterfly pokes his head into the furnace to assess the space. He believes he can squeeze through and make the climb, but his bulk is sure to pick up a disturbing amount of soot and ash.

Meanwhile, in the boiler room above...

Fearless knocks the zoog from his neck and jumps back, scrambling to ready his small crossbow. Though still bleeding from his wound and near panic, he somehow gets off a shot that rips along the zoog' back, injuring it!

As the vent passageway is fairly blocked at this point, the Twin waits at the bottom, comfortable in waiting for the others to deal with the enemies above. "Do you think they need your goddess's aid above, Brother?" the Twin asks of Brother Butterfly.

In the vent, the Snake pushes on the man above him, trying to get the Mariner to move. "Ssssssss... How can I ssssssave thossssse above with you in the way?" he asks.

When the man finally moves up, the eidolon moves 10' out of the vented area and lashes out at the nearest enemy.

The Mariner panics for a moment and throws himself flat against the chute as a talking snake slithers by. Shaking his nearly bald head with fringed curtain of wispy hair, "What in hell?"

Reaching the top, he pulls himself through and sees some hungry mundane rats from his point of view. He tries to punt one away with a heavy boot he found below.

Brother Butterfly’s reply to The Twin is a little bit more to show outward bravado. He thinks that The Twins true purpose is to call him a coward.

Of course! I'm going to join our companions. The Goddess is called Lady Luck for a very good reason. And I have never known ANYONE who couldn't use a bit of good luck.
Giving a little smile and wink.

Turning and looking at the vent pipe, he is distracted by all the gunk and grime and caked on soot.
Knowing that his facial features are betraying him as he changed from a smile to a grossed out look. He tries to deflect the true cause of his feelings.

Turning back to The Twin
You know I'm a bit curious AND scared of the fact that you can just create a pet snake out of thin air. I'd certainly love to know how you do that, and why your friend is a snake.

But, now is not the time.

He makes his move into the chimney chute.

Right when his hand hits the first cake of soot ----Various thoughts go through his mind as he climbs. Such as:
Go to your happy place.
Haven’t they cleaned this thing in years?!! WHO doesn't clean their chimney every spring?
Ouch, that sharp edge stabbed me in one of my fat rolls.

And finally
Someone had better be bleeding! This is too much for me to take.

And that is only him getting half way up the pipe.

To be fair as to the first sentence, we heard Fearless yell to warn us of danger, but I imagine the flow of information through a 20' heating vent is sparse at best, so the Twin is commenting on the safety of those above, not the cowardice of Brother Butterfly. Though maybe he is commenting on both! Who knows. ;-)

The Twin thinks about Brother Butterfly's question as the man moves towards the heating vent. Having only a few seconds, he utters only a few words before the man ascends. "You know, I don't know why he's a snake..." he says, starting to wonder about that himself.

As Brother Butterfly leaves to join the others, the Twin is left awkwardly with Campre, though he still ignores the man.

BB and Twin are probably the sanest of the lot.
