"Huh. I like this pool more than the other," Ramli says. "I could use a sip myself."
He suits actions to words and shrugs.
"Looks like nothing here. One more passage to rule out, I think. I still don't know how that girl could have made it down here, though."
| DM Panic |
Ramli also samples the water, and finds them as refreshing as Sad found them, all of his minor scratches and injuries swiftly disappearing from his skin.
Realizing there is little here beyond a fountain that seems to mend wounds, the party doubles back and heads to the east and then to the north whereupon Alaric steps up to a large wooden door.
As he tries to open the door, he discovers it is swollen, its size having been increased as it seems to have absorbed a significant amount of water, probably from the room beyond.
It takes the knight a few attempts, but with his shoulder lowered, he forces the door open to the room beyond (DC15 Strength check was required, nothing to slow a PbP down for).
The room is filled with water, probably as deep as the outside corridor. The chamber is in an advanced state of decay, with a gaping hole in the ceiling admitting a constant trickle of water. The three stone sarcophagi in this room are almost completely covered in a thick carpet of moss and fungus.
The water is 3ft deep and considered difficult terrain for medium sized creatures, which you all are. Be glad you're not small-sized on this one. Where's Harrol? :)

Perched atop the far sarcophagus, an enormous red frog the size of a cow sits in wait. Its giant yellow eyes narrow at the glint of light reflecting from Alaric's armor.
It croaks and appears as if it is about to leap forward and strike at the knight.
And we go into combat, but the well honed warriors that Alaric, Sad Rock and Ugnoth are get the drop on the red froggie.

Round 1, Init 21
"Sad get this. No problem."
Sad bravely steps forward, moving to P2, his head barely above the water itself and begins to make guttural croaking noises at the toad.
1d20 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (5) - 2 + 2 = 5 Wild Empathy
Yeah, he's toadily got this, totally.
Ramli Il-Bahr.

"You're not a monster, Rock, it's not going to understand you!
"Maybe we can scare or lure it away."
The be-staffed wizard casts quickly and sends several balls of multicolored lights dancing by the toad, leading to the northeast, away from the group's destination.
Casting dancing lights.

Round 2
24 Alaric :
21 Sad Rock :
18 Ugnoth :
Alaric moves into the room and readies himself for what must surely be the frog's attack while Ugnoth wades into the room.
Sad Rock, believing himself to speak froggie, steps forward and croaks several times. The frog at the end seems enraged by Sad's poor grammar and croaks back at him louder than his oread mother did that one time he broke the family's only toothbrush.
The frog at the end of the room looks hungrily at Ugnoth and slowly opens its mouth to "invite the Shoanti to dinner". A fifteen foot long tongue lashes out and sticks to the him, dragging him ever closer to the frog's waiting maw (Ugnoth gains the grappled condition; -4 Dex, -2 attacks).
Suddenly, the waters furiously part as two more of the giant toads leap onto sarcophagi. The second frog jealously croaks at the frog "tongue-ing" Ugnoth and takes a large bite from his shoulder (4 damage to Ugnoth).
You can almost see the third frog shrugging as the first and second battle over who gets to swallow the bard. A series of blorts and hribburts are exchanged, as if the frogs are discussing who among your party is the most offensive to them.
With a final nod and apparent agreement among them, the third frog turns its evil yellow eyes to Sad Rock and snortles before lashing out with a tongue of his own, which sticks to the oread's armor and drags him ever closer (Sad gains the grappled condition; -4 Dex, -2 attacks).

The way I read the giant frog's tongue ability is that it can cause a grapple at 15ft, whereby it makes CMB checks to drag its target 5ft/round. So Sad is actually grappled 5ft away from the frog. Unlike a normal grapple, you can actually move, but only 5ft closer to the frog. Or you could try to break the grapple.

24 Alaric : Steps to R1 and strikes F2 for 7 damage, F2 croaks
21 Sad Rock : TBD
18 Ugnoth : TBD
Damvorak, Ramli and Alaric all advance and focus their efforts on the lone frog that doesn't seem to be grappling their friends - perhaps they are curious to see what happens when the frogs try to eat them, and are worried about interfering.
Regardless, one frog croaks. Permanently. As in, dead.

The two remaining frogs, their meals within easy reach both attempt to lock their massive jaws around their prey but quickly learn that Ugnoth and Sad Rock are far too large to swallow whole (alas, nobody is small-sized). Instead, they both agree with hearty blorps that their best approach is to bite both Ugnoth and Sad Rock in half, and the one chewing on Ugnoth is semi-successful at the effort (6 damage to Ugnoth).

Both are successful and begin chewing the flesh like cows chewing whatever cows chew (5 damage to both Ugnoth and Sad).
The one clubbed by Ramli shakes it head at Sad Rock's thoughts as it's eyes swirl mysteriously.

Sad clubs the yellow frog into submission as it finally goes limp, a look of sadness in its eyes that it couldn't make friends. Or, at least that's how it appears.
Froggie #3 is no more.
Alaric wades forward, and his flail crunches into frog head with a disgusting sklurch. The frog wheezes, but still seems like it is going to try to eat the bard.

Ramli steps up and finishes the lone remaining frog.
Out of combat.
The room falls quiet without the croaking, broaping or brapping of the frogs.
Stuffed into the nest at the end of the chamber is the mostly devoured corpse of a human man. On the man's right hand is a ring made of gold and set with a single aquamarine. Tied to his belt is a pouch that contains 24 gp in coins, identical in mint to those found on the corpse beside the Gray Lake.
A closed door leads south.

Sad casts Stabilize on all the froggies.
"That's okay, Froggie. Sad *not* monster. Sad friend," Sad Rock whispers in the 'ear' of each of the downed amphibians. "Please don't croak."
Sad look around for things of interest.
"What now, Uglynot? Now we sing?'
| DM Panic |
After healing and bidding farewell to the frogs, you form up and Alaric opens the door to the south.
As you proceed down the hallway and look to your west, you notice the ripple of electricity throughout this room which seems to periodically discharge throughout the room. You wager if any of you were in that room, or even adjacent to it, at the wrong time, you'd receive a considerable shock from the strange blue colored fungus there.
As you step past, you recognize the badly burnt body of a giant frog along with many giant rats among the rooms victims.
An azure fungus almost completely covers this room.
Finally, Alaric steps up to the doorway of a larger room.
This large chamber is partially flooded, with the south end just barely rising out of the stagnant water. A large wheel is set into the floor of the dry area, attached to chains that rise up into the ceiling. A thick layer of slick, black mold covers the carvings on the walls of this chamber.

As Ugnoth takes a few steps, his footing gives way as he apparently steps into some sort of pit.
@Ugnoth: No reflex save required. The mechanic given here is a DC10 Swim check or else you will sink 10ft down into this pit.
Ugnoth quickly determines he's falling into some sort of pit and there is a skeleton waiting for him to sink to the bottom (S7 is 10ft down inside the pit).
As Ugnoth attempts to tread water, six other skeletons rise from hiding underneath the black water.
The blue squares are the pit, which is 10ft drop. If you step into a pit square, you'll need to make a DC10 Swim check or else you'll sink to the bottom of the pit. No action is required here, just assume it's part of your movement (and it's difficult terrain).

Ramli, palm facing another skeleton, causes it to spontaneously explode. Because, magic.
Damvorak and Sad Rock both ready for the approach of a skeleton, and as one responds, Sad Rock is quick to step up and crush it into rubble.
The three skeletons near the wheel advance at Ugnoth in a seeming attempt to defend it. One gashes a decent wound in the man's side (7 damage).
