DM | Map Stuff | Burden of Envy

Though Huck and Rokdor continue to struggle to hit their clumsy foe, perhaps undone by the ghastly smell of seared, rotten flesh, Tog suffers no ill effects from it – in fact, it reminds him happily of his mother’s cooking. In any case, he brings his axe down on the lead zombie and nearly cuts it in half, then moves forward to stand over the mess of decrepit flesh left behind. The other blade of his axe sweeps upward, catching the second zombie in the chin and tearing its head clean from its body, revealing a writhing mass of maggots that have taken up residence in its neck!

With the zombies destroyed, the party is able to make their way into the room beyond and get a better look at things. They soon discover that the body on the floor is that of a male dhampir, clad in wizardly robes. Amidst the detritus littering they cavern, they find a few items of interest, including a small journal in the dhampir’s belt pouch, which details plans to start an army of undead made from the “fish people” who have been frequenting this cave. In addition, Rokdor discovers a small, perfectly-formed pearl and Huck turns up a golden ring, both of which radiate magic when examined for it.

In his explorations of the chamber, Sobestian stares curiously at a spot in the northeast corner of the room, and realizes that what looks like a solid wall actually has a large crack concealed behind a flake of rock. It appears to open into a passage – perhaps this haunt of the undead is not such a dead end after all…

Once everyone is done healing and searching the room, Huck suggests that the party try out the concealed passage!

DM | Map Stuff | Burden of Envy

Rather than spending time on the spellcraft mechanics, I’ll just tell you what you found: a 1st-level pearl of power and a ring of protection +1. If you want to do any healing before going into the tunnel, that’s fine, just include it in your next post.

Following Huck’s suggestion, the party follows the hidden passage. It is a narrow, natural stone passage with many twists and turns, gradually ascending to the east. Occasional seeps of water through the stone walls cause the floor to be somewhat slick, but it is still quite passable.

Arriving at a particularly convoluted section of tunnel, the party pauses a moment, having heard something. Listening closely, everyone can hear the faint sounds of combat and a familiar woman’s voice half-shouting and half-reciting, “As the legendary Gregaro Voth successfully battled the wild beasts in the deepest reaches of the Mwangi Expanse, so shall I defeat you, foul servant of Lamashtu!” It appears that Janira Gavix is somewhere close by, engaging the minotaur in combat on the surface after failing to lose the unrelenting creature in the wilderness! From the sound of things, the tunnel must exit to the surface a short way ahead.

Eager to assist their mentor, the Pathfinders continue down the passage, but they’ve only gone a few paces when Oldmar senses something amiss in the tunnel ahead. What at first seemed to be a carpet of fungi and mushrooms thriving in the dampness of the tunnel seems to shift slightly, as if it might be part of something larger.

Only Oldmar had an action in the surprise round, and he delayed, so after the carpet's attack, we'll go into regular initiative. I'll use Huck's action as posted. Sobe's roll told him nothing about this thing.

Sensing the party nearby, the carpet of fungi, mildew and toadstools surges into motion, lashing out a varicolored pseudopod at Tog. The massive creature's form is awkwardly squeezed into the narrow passage, causing its strike to miss.

Slam, squeezing: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 - 4 = 9 vs. Tog's flat-footed AC

DM | Map Stuff | Burden of Envy

Well, that was a little complicated in terms of sequence of events (from my perspective, at least), but Tog's rolling a 2 will still hit, because the thing is squeezing - so it has an AC of 4...

Oldmar drops on his dwarven fundament, successfully dodging the slime mold's engulfing attack! Tog's slice at the thing is wildly aimed, but the fungus-covered creature's naturally poor dexterity is made worse by its awkward position in the narrow hall - and Tog destroys it! The hallway lies covered in a slurry of ooze, slime and fungus, and the Pathfinders are able to add another glorious smell to the list of scents they have experienced during their confirmation.

Moving quickly in order to help Janira in her battle with the minotaur, the party follows the twisting tunnels another hundred feet or so. As they travel, a faint light to the east grows brighter, and the sound of Janira’s oration grows closer and clearer.

Emerging from the tunnel, the moonlit space of the surface world above provides a welcome reprieve from the blue and green fungus of the caverns below. The moonlight illuminates a rushing stream, carrying water from high up in the mountains above. A ledge to the west rises up to the nearby forest canopy. A broad tree trunk spans the width of the stream.

In a clearing on the southern bank of the stream, Janira Gavix is locked in combat with her relentless minotaur foe. Though it is hard to see her clearly at this distance, especially with the thin screen of trees on this side of the stream, it is evident from Janira’s movements that she has sustained some serious wounds. When the party first emerges from the cave and sees the two figures, Janira can be heard shouting, “You vile beast! I know not what drives your black heart, but I shall not fail in my duty. I shall see you driven from this forest, back to the hills from whence you came!”

Map is posted above. Crossing the stream in the water requires a DC 15 Swim check. The tree trunk is slippery from the splashing water, and crossing it at half speed requires a successful DC 7 Acrobatics check, during which time you are considered flatfooted. If you fail this check, you fall into the water unless you make a DC 13 Reflex save, in which case you land prone on the trunk instead.

Note: you benefit from Janira's Inspire Courage (+1) for the next 5 rounds.

Hand-to-hand combat does not seem to be Huck's strong-suit but since grappling such a big creature is difficult for the little halfling, he elects to go for a kick to the shins.

flurry of blows: 1d20 - 1 + 1 ⇒ (15) - 1 + 1 = 15
damage: 1d4 - 1 + 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 + 1 = 3

flurry of blows: 1d20 - 1 + 1 ⇒ (6) - 1 + 1 = 6
damage: 1d4 - 1 + 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 + 1 = 1
