Twilight cringed a bit "Oh no, bad puns. Should I be happy that it might be an indication Nargun is starting to get over his loss, or dread that he might start subjecting us to more dwarven humour."

"And why is Devan suddenly being so reckless, charging into a fight while he is still suffering from the effects of poison and disease. And without any proper armour at that?"

She moves quickly over to Devan and flashes a quick smile at Baldrago "Sorry Baldrago, I'm going to have to bow out of our meeting tomorrow."

Twilight takes a small strip of paper from a small pouch on her belt and reads the prayer of protection written upon it while holding her holy symbol. Devan is briefly surrounded by a faint yellow glow which quickly fades.

Twilight moves to help Devan who is in the thick of melee for the first time, despite the lingering effects of his illness. Her divine spell causes her touch to place a ward on the bard, a yellow glow limning him momentarily.

Mirela fires at the man she fears is planning stab Nargun from behind, her arrow striking him squarely in the upper shoulder, and sinking deep.

Parns, the skinny guy, lets his bow clatter to the ground, and snatches up another evil looking knife from the butcher's table. He then sidesteps just enough to catch Nargun in between the two warriors and slashes at him with cleaver. Despite his mirage-like appearance the flanking attack scores a hit, driving deep into the ribs of Nargun.

Our favorite dwarf is now up, having taken 5 hp dmg from that hit.

Nargun doesn't even flich at the minor wound, in fact the demented barbarian seems amused

Was that all you got? Let's see how you take a blow.

Calmly, Nargun delivers a powerful strike, aiming at his opponent's leg.

The Killing Floor - Round 3 - continued

Ignoring the wound in his ribs, Nargun counter-strokes with his axe, chopping low and from the side. The butcher's knife has no hope of parrying that strike and it cuts through flesh to the bone, as Parns screams in agony, and his leg starts to buckle. Gritting his teeth, he manages to stay upright, but is clearly disabled.

Take an aggressive step forward through the opened door, Baldrago grits his teeth and lunges at Devan, his fencing not very agile compared to his sheer power. Devan, showing considerable skill with the rapier suddenly, flicks his attack aside and whips the point of his own steel back at the over-aggressive soldier. The point might have stuck through a lesser armored man, but the chain mail stops this attack.

Turning to stab Nargun from behind, Blue Warrior slashes at the dwarf, catching him unaware. The blade cuts deep, but Nargun again seems to shrug most of it off.

Devan's frowns as he sees another form coming into the fight from upstairs. It is the large man, Malder, who is similarly armed with sword and chainmail. He huffs and puffs down the stairs, taking a position to threaten Devan, but does not make an attack this round.

Dropping his sling, Atticus unlimbers his morning star and moves forward to engage Blue (Karrolo), but his first attack misses everything.

Nargun gets hit again (crit this time) but only takes 4hp (now down 8 total) with his DR. Devan is up now to end Round 3.

Eyes widened in alarm st the sight of yet another ex-guard entering the fray, the musician tried not to show his nervousness, glancing back ever so briefly at Twilight. "Mind backing up a step or two, m'lady?" He flashed her a nervous grin before turning his attention back to the two thugs in front of him. Even with his accumulating wounds Nargun appeared to have the other fight well in hand now that he had Atticus and Mirela's assistance. Devan just had to hold on here until assistance could arrive.

The bard lunged forward with his rapier, the pitiful attack clearly just meant to keep attention on himself. He then backed up a step, trying to put a portion of the wall between himself and Malder.

Twilight's brow furrowed with concern at the arrival of Malder. Devan's fancy swordplay was surprisingly good, but she was still worried that he wasn't wearing anything more than a heavy quilt for protection.

She had been saving her bonded item for something a little more spectacular, but this situation seemed to warrant its use immediately. She gently drew on the torus of arcane potential bound in her holy symbol. With the same practiced words and gestures she cast her spell of invisible armour on Devan, this time the power behind it coming from the malleable energy in her bonded item filtered through her own mind to give it form rather than a pre-built construct powered by her own reserves.

Ribbons of blue energy wrapped around Devan before fading into invisibility.

Devan: Mage armour: +4 armour bonus (force) to AC: 2hr

With that done, she stepped out of Devan's way.

With a pair of enemies before him, and Twilight blocking him in from behind, Devan kindly asks the Calistrian to move back, which will give him room to maneuver against the foes. He waits for her to comply before acting.

Before Twilight can react to Devan's request for space, another foe comes bounding down the stairs, taking them two at a time. This is a handsome youngish man still dressed in the livery of the Korvosan Guard, the sergeant's chevrons clearly visible on this shoulders. He carries a composite longbow, and wears a spear slung across his back. "Who attacks us in our place of work? Brigands? Traitors to the cause? Rally boys, rally! We shall drive them from here." He lines up his bow at Mirela and fires. The shot comes with such speed that Mirela can't dodge it, and with such force that it punches a hole in her hide armor, driving deep into her shoulder beneath, her arm quickly numbing from the wound.

Spending a moment before she backs away, Twilight channels the energy of her arcane bond to bring forth a spell that gives Devan even more magical wards. The caster then steps backwards, giving Devan room to do his thing.

Just to note: Mage Armor does not stack with Devan's existing armor, so it only imparts an additional +2 bonus. It does stack with Shield of Faith, this means the bard/swashbuckler has a +4 magical bonus on top of his armor, which makes his AC 16. Some of that is due to his DEX penalty from disease earlier.

Lunging forward to make a feeble attack, Devan is more interested in putting some wall between him and the newcomer to the fight, so he slips backwards a bit, ready to parry any new onslaught.

Creeping a bit closer and trusting to the whisper of fate, Mirela selects Karralo as her target once again, sending another arrow into the man, who staggers, stumbles and falls to the floor, unconscious and bleeding.

Staggered himself from the dwarf's axe stroke, Parns limps backwards feebly, holding on to the tabletop to keep himself upright. The seriously wounded man reaches for his a potion flask at this belt, his hands trembling with the effort. He gets the bottle unstopped and ready to drink, but cannot finish before the round ends.

Mirela is hit by Vancaskerkin's bow for 13 hp, leaving her with just 4.. Nargun up next for the good guys.

Doctor Evil, I think you forgot to account for the special "Harrow" bonus to AC of +1 to Dodge I currently have. Do you want me to add that to my Stat Line? I wasn't sure from the PM if that should be included in my stat line until you tell me otherwise. I"m fine if you don't want to Retcon the shot but it would be good to know for going forward.

Mirela:
So, the Harrow bonus doesn't apply to Verik Vancaskerkin. That bonus is awarded via a different card, which was actually drawn by our witch, before she bailed. Your card is good until further notice, but I guess, with a few exceptions. You can add the Harrow bonus to your AC tag line if you like.

Think so, it took down the Blue guy. Looks like you'll be taking down the Green guy.

The Killing Floor - Round 4 - continued

Stepping over to where the disabled man, with his shattered leg, is trying to down his potion, Nargun swings at the man who has terror in his eyes as he doom falls. The axe stroke scores and the foe goes down, bleeding profusely from the latest wound.

Baldrago continues to aggressively pressure Devan with his own sword. In a nifty move, Devan parries the sword stroke of the larger man, then using his momentum to spin around, he stabs back at the soldier with an agile flourish. Unfortunately, the move looks better than it is aimed, and the riposte fails to score.

Pushing past Baldrago, who is locked in the fight with Devan, Malder huffs and puffs his way into the room, putting his forward momentum into a stroke aimed at Atticus. The force knocks the professor's attempt to block and the blade cuts a deep wound into Atticus' shoulder.

Twilight looked around in alarm, things had escalated very quickly. She couldn't help but feel that there had been a missed opportunity somewhere that might have avoided this conflict.

She called out to Vancaskerkin "Sergeant! We were sent by Captain Kroft to investigate your desertion! I don't disagree with what you are doing here, call off your men. I can tend to your wounded if and we can discuss how we might be able to keep your operation open and satisfy Kroft at the same time."

Verik looks over at the priestess, "Sorry lady. Maybe if you'd wanted to talk before you snuck in here and assaulted my men, we could've come to an agreement. Now, swords will do the talking. We all know the penalty if the Guard gets their hands on us again. Kill these interlopers, boys!"

Devan continues his duel with Baldrago, missing yet another attack, but ready to defend in case of continued pressure by the crass soldier.

Forgetting about offense for a second, Mirela looks to heal both her allies and the fallen foes, enough to stabilize them at least. She calls forth the revitalizing power of Old Deadeye, and a warm glow surrounds those within her range and a diffuse healing washes over all of them. The archer-priestess then moves across the room a bit, trying to line up a good shot, while using her arm buckler to protect herself.

Mirela, Atticus, and Nargun all heal 3. Both the fallen allies are stabilized but not awakened.

The wounds driving him to battle-frenzy once again, Nargun starts screaming the name of his fallen nemesis as he slowly advances toward the bow-wielding sergeant, a blow meant to decapitate the man comes right behind, just missing removing Verik's head entirely, but leaving him with a major wound.

"Well, time to see if the fleeing fox gambit works in practice as well as in theory."

Twilight braced herself for the risky maneuver. She had learned it from one of the more martially inclined priests. The theory being that if one wasn't confident enough in their ability to cast a spell in the face of an agressor, then they might be able to trick the opponent into overextending themselves by pretending to let ones guard down, and then when the opponent was off balance quickly casting a spell.

The trick with this, however, was that it did assume that she had armour on that would protect her from the opponent's attack. Twilight was comfortable with her mage armour, but it was no suit of mail. The advantage, if it could be called that, was that even if they managed to hit her, as long as she survived the attack she should have enough time to cast her spell without interruption before they could recover.

Deception was not without its risks.

Twilight dropped her guard and took a reckless few steps away from Baldrago trying to get him to take a swing at her.

Twilight is moving, but not withdrawing.

If he attacks her (and she survives):
Twilight quickly steps back to where she was standing just a moment before and with a fluid motion flings a pinch of coloured sand from her component pouch at Baldrago and Vancaskerkin. As she does so she speaks arcane words and makes a quick gesture causing the sand to burst into a brilliant multi-coloured spray that threatened to overwhelm the senses of any caught within it.

Move in a triangle back to position "A", pray they don't have combat reflexes and cast Colour spray, DC 14 will save. Effects based on HD of opponent.

If he does not attack her:
Ah well, he is cannier than he looks. Its probably for the best anyway, I don't fancy getting hit by one of those weapons.
With that she moves behind Devan. She kisses her fingers and gently caresses Devan's neck imparting Calistria's favour on him.

Move to position "B" and use Bit of luck, roll 2d20 for all d20 checks and take the better for 1 round

Devan panted lightly, the physical strain of the extended fight along with the effects of his illness bringing a light sheen of sweat to his face and hair. The musician gritted his teeth and carried on, seeing in the background Nargun deliver another brutal blow to the leader of the would-be butchers.

If Baldrago takes the AOO against Twilight:

Devan glowers at the man taking a potshot at the Calistrian, trying to jab him with the pointy end of his rapier.

Rapier: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

If Baldrago decides not to take the AOO against Twilight:

Devan felt a warmth on the back of his neck, the blessings of Calistria flowing through him. Emboldened, he stood his ground, jabbing at Baldrago with his thin blade.

Well, it was higher, at any rate.

Baldrago must be using Bonetti's defense against me.

I would expect you to attack with Capa Ferro then.

The Killing Floor - Round 6 - continued

Despite her lack of armor, Twilight tries a tactical trick learned from her hours of magic practice. She steps away from the sword-wielding Baldrago without defending herself, hoping to draw his attack. Despite the call from his sergeant, the soldier sees this as too easy an opportunity and lunges forward at Twilight's defenseless retreat, but his foot slips in a puddle of the rending water, and his attack misses her.

Coming back around on him, in a surprise tactic, she casts a spell right in his face, sending whorls and spirals of variegated color whipping through the air around the deadly foe. Caught in the burst, Baldrago's mouth opens in wonder, but only for an instant before the spell overwhelms him and he falls to the ground unconscious.

I am going to give Devan a chance to re-do his action given the fall of Baldrago before he acts.

Mirela continues to use her mobility and ranged attacks, but this time her arrow just misses the intended target who is still pressuring Atticus.

His battle-rage supplanting his higher brain functions, Nargun envisions his foe as Lamm reborn and with a roar of anger, steps forward and drives his axe into the Sergeant Vancaskerkin once again, opening another serious wound in the leader of the deserters.

Will hold up the action here for Devan's retconned action. Looks like the odds have shifted considerably.

Seeing Baldrago fall in the midst of the blast of colors that Twilight called forth, the musician's eyes shifted to the leader of the bandits, this Verik Vancaskerkin. Devan stepped up beside Nargun, his posture offensive though he holds back a strike for now. Instead he tried to talk sense to the bandit leader.

"It's over, Verik! Your companions are falling, you are grievously injured, and maybe we can still work something out. As my lady companion over there said, we wish to know more of your motives. Keep fighting, and there shall be no mercy!"

The Killing Floor - Round 6 - continued

Stepping over the uncconscious Baldrago, Devan steps forward to threaten the guardsman leader. Laying out the facts, and his probably future should the fighting continue, Devan can see the doubt and conflict on Verik's handsome features, but he doesn't immediately respond.

Malder, hearkening to his sergeant's call, tries to skillfully pull away from combat with Atticus to come to the aid of Verik. His retreat provokes an attack by the professor, but the swing comes up empty. The remaining soldier falls on Nargun from the rear, with a ferocious roar. But even in his rage state, Nargun is able to side step the vicious attack from behind. "We won't give in to the Queen's men. We have too much sunk in this operation to give it up without a fight," growls Malder in response to those who want to negotiate with Verik.

The Killing Floor - Round 6 - concluded

Frustrated as the remaining soldier disengages him and turns to flank Nargun, Atticus charges foward trying to make the man pay for turning his back on him. Swinging his metal club-like weapon with all his meager strength, the Professor succeeds this time in braining the foe. With an ugly smack, the morningstar cracks the skull of Malder, not quite dropping the man, but enough that he is clearly in mortal jeopardy.

Stepping away from Nargun and Devan, who are pressing him closely, the sergeant reaches for a glass flask in his belt pouch and drinks the fluid, trying to revitalize himself as the fight wears on. "Guarantee my passage, and my men's, out of the city, and I will lay down my weapons." he says, looking for the right terms if he is to surrender.

AFter Verik drinks the potion, everyone but Atticus has a shot once again.

Not sure if a Raging barbarian could use Non lethal attacks, and Nargun would be as happy to kill the man outright than to stun him. What do you say , GM?

Twilight looked at the raging dwarf with concern, "Remember, we are supposed to bring them in alive!"

The way before her was blocked with combatants and she had used almost every spell she had. As such she gingerly stepped across Baldrago's unconscious form and fumbled for her whip. The others made it look so easy but she still had to make an effort to draw her weapon. Maybe she should start just hanging it at her hip rather than wrapping it around her waist.

I assumed fallen people are considered hindered terrain, is that correct? If so, I move forward and then draw whip. If not then I 5' step forward, draw whip and use bit of luck on Devan.

Devan made ready to lie through his teeth to Verik and guarantee his demands, but Mirela and Nargun seemed to answer before him with steel. Shrugging as the heavy hits struck their opponents, the musician strummed at the instrument on his side before he stepped forward, trying to cloud the sergeant's mind so they could finish incapacitating him before he tried to retreat.

Cast Daze (Will DC 13), then step forward.

Sorry for the short absence, recovering just in time to travel for holidays...Besides the -4 to hit penalty, I don't think there is any game system rule that prevents raging barbarians from doing NL damage. I'll allow it. I don't think unconscious people hinder movement. If they were still awake and prone, different story.

The Killing Floor - Round 7 - concluded

Gently reminding Nargun to bring the outlaw deserters in alive, Twilight draws her whip while stepping forward, and gently touches Devan, passing Calistra's luck to his next actions.

Strumming his instrument, Devan tries to daze the guard sergeant who seems momentarily confused, but instantly shakes off the effect.

Taking careful aim, Mirela fires at Malder over the tank of cool water. Her shot hits the last soldier, dropping him to the ground, bleeding.

Despite his battle-rage, Nargun listened to the wise words of Twilight and use the flat of his axe to smack Vancaskerkin, rather than decimating him with the blade. The dwarf's swing is so powerful and true that it knocks the sergeant completely off his feet, his eyes rolling up in his head as he falls to the ground senseless.

End of Combat

GM Screen:

Verik DC 13 Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13

After the furious melee ends, Mirela moves around to the fallen foes, using her divine magics to retain any life left within them. She finds that Vancaskerkin is not dead, just knocked unconscious by Nargun's blow. She finds that her spell stops Malder's bleeding, keeping him alive. Further, it seems that Baldrago wakens not long after the fight, but he is blind and stunned from some time after, and he gives up easily in his debilitated state. The other two foes, Parns and Karrolo have unfortunately, expired from their wounds by the time the fight ends.

Post-Combat summary will be up in Discussion soon. Let us know what you do once the fight has ended.
