Edgar stays in the hall. Last time he was near a room, it left him wounded far worse than a blade could manage. He'll gladly jump in against a wight but the psychological warfare this house was waging unnerved him. Definitely burn this place to cinders after.

As the group examines the room, Ro feels particularly drawn to the scarf, which seems to be soundlessly calling her. She moves toward it, feeling everything else in library fade out of focus as she approaches.

DC 20 Perception check:
The scarf seems to be moving very slightly as if blown by a light breeze that cannot be felt. A haunt is about to manifest and you can make a move or standard action to try to prevent it.

Bypassing Drasven, she heads to the bookend and picks it up:"Did you know there are people who can look at an object and know about it's history?"

And that's why Occult classes with gimmicks like Object Reading are a burden on GM's running AP's from before that was a thing...

Just remembered that this group is unlikely to be able to do much to prevent the haunt, so ...

In her mind, Ro momentarily believers she is someone else, and experiences what I have written below. I am not wrapping it in spoiler tags so that she doesn't have to restate everything herself once she brakes out of the trance. Just realize that the rest of you don't know what's going on until she explains things afterwards; if she is still alive, that is.

You can't believe your luck! You were traveling with your family clan up the Lost Coast Road, headed for your cousin's home north of Sandpoint, when you were caught in a terrible downpour. You knew a Varisian caravan shouldn't have traveled this early in the season, but things had turned sour for your people in Magnimar, and it was time to move.

The rain poured down for hours, trading back and forth with hail, and anyone caught outside your one covered wagon was soaked to the bone and shivering uncontrollably. Just then a handsome, young Chelaxian nobleman appeared on his horse out of nowhere, inviting all of you to join him at his hearth less than a mile away. Your father was suspicious, but also did not like the idea of spending the night outside, so your family followed young master Foxglove to his manor home. The huge house, Misgivings it was called, was creepy, but you had never seen such opulence before, and an overnight stay turned into a stay of more than a week. Your siblings and cousins were put to work making many necessary repairs, while the rest of you did your best to clean and cook in order to repay the handsome young Aldern for his generosity.

You don't know what it was about him, but you immediately were attracted to him; it was love at first sight. "Iesha of the Raven Tresses" he began to call you, and you hardly spent a moment apart in the week your family was his guest. At the end of the week, Aldern asked your father for your hand in marriage, who happily agreed as the wealthy man required no dowry.

The year since you were married has been good, well mostly good, although something has come over him since he came back from his business trip to Magnimar a month ago. He has become unusually short tempered and drinks too much, and has been unwilling to let you make the short journey to Sandpoint to help with the preparations for the upcoming Swallowtail Festival and the dedication of the Cathedral. He says that he loves you too much and is unwilling to share you with "the common riff-raff".

You didn't realize how lonely you had gotten until a traveling Varisian carpenter moved in for a week to complete some repairs. Aldern hired him to do some work on the back of the house and finally fix the leaking roof on the top floor. It was so lovely to be able to speak your own language again, and the carpenter was respectful while he stayed at Misgivings. Maybe he'll be able to do something about the dreadful basement as well, but that would take a miracle!

Before he left for the Swallowtail Festival this morning, Aldern pulled me aside and insisted I keep an eye on the Varisian carpenter and make sure he doesn't steal anything while he is away. I can't believe he would speak to me in this way, and fall back on such blatant stereotypes , but I am trying to act more like the lady of the manor, so I guess I have to.

After the Carpenter, whose name is Nicola, finished his work, I invited him into the library where I shared an old book I had found on Varisian history. It was written by a Chelaxian immigrant, of course, and we laughed for hours at the man's incorrect assumptions about our people. We were having a lovely time in front of the fire when I heard Aldern return. He stormed into the library in a rage, hurling untrue accusations of infidelity at the two of us. Nicola stood up and protested his innocence, and I jumped up to defend him. Aldern rushed at both of us, and pushed me to the floor like a rag doll. When I sat up, he had grabbed one of the bookends from a shelf and was bludgeoning the Carpenter with it mercilessly. After the tenth hit, Nicola stopped twitching. Then, with rage in his eyes, Aldern turned to me and grabbed the beautiful scarf around my neck that had been his first anniversary present to me. Everything went dark after that.

Aldern, how could you do this? How could you hide such anger and callousness from me, or did you change into a wholly new person in the scant year that we've known each other? I know one thing. I'm not going to take this abuse any more. We Varisians are used to ill-treatment, but we know when enough is enough. You'll regret having broken my heart.

A feeling of overwhelming strength and vitality seeps into Karmid as he wrestles with the seemingly animated scarf trying to end Rojava's life. Straining mightily against a force more powerful than the strongest constrictor snake, he manages to unwind it from around the woman's neck and throws it into a corner.

Lia bends down and checks Ro's airway, which seems to once again be clear. This is evidenced as her face slowly turns back to its normal, if paler, shade.

Off in the corner of the library, the scarf lies unmoving in a crumpled heap.

Ro is in negative hp, but is stabilized.

As soon as Drasven's curing returns her to consciousness Ro jerks upright into a sitting position. Her eyes dart about, dazed and unfixed. She gasps for breath, and in between gasps repeats "I've been killed" three or four times.

As her eyes start to focus on her surroundings the the terror subsides, Ro corrects herself. "Not me, he killed her and a man. He was jealous."

In the piano room, Ro has been shocked and a little freaked out. This time she just seems miserable.

"Right in this room." She points out the bloodied bookend. "Aldern Foxglove. He crushed the man's head with that. Then he strangled her with the scarf. She was his wife. Then he left straight for the Swallowtail Festival."

Ro remains sitting on the floor. As she thinks about what happened, and puts the pieces together, her fright is replaced by a horrible, sick feeling.

"All this happened recently. Must have been hardly more than a day before we met him in Sandpoint."

I'm going to retroactively add a wand of cure light wounds with 15 charges to Drasven's inventory. Let's say it was given to you by Father Zantus before you left Sandpoint. You're already way low on treasure, no reason to make it worse. Also, Drasven, if you want, we can say that that the healing wand brought Ro back.

On a side note, I let folks receive 5.5 points of healing per charge from the wand of CLW instead of rolling. That means if you spend one charge you regain 5 hp, if you spend 2 charges, you regain 11 hp, etc.

I would rather opt to conserve the wand as I'm not the only one who can use it. Thank you GM for the Generous Gift. I truly missed having this wand at hand.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
Ro was at 3 after Drasven healing of 9.
Jilli heals for 17
So Ro is at 20.
With GM's ruling on average healing with wand. 3 charges should give you 16 more hitpoints to bring Ro up to 36.
12 charges left to our wand then.

Drasven seeing that Ro still needed healing and remembered that before they left, Father Zantus had pressed into his hands a wand with apologies that it wasn't fully finished yet but he knew that they would need it more.

"I estimate perhaps 12 more uses out of it before the haling magic stored in it is drained. We may need it more in this ill fated house."

As the group files into the foyer with the stuffed manticore, Karmid catches an unmistakable smell from his childhood: that of burning hair or fur. Seconds later, the manticore, which had been facing the front door, seems to come to life and turn on its pedestal toward the Shoanti. Ouch. That could have been worse!

Picking himself up carefully, Karmid staggers a bit and tries to deflect the seriousness of the moment...

"Sorry guys...mind if I smoke?"

...and then falls down comically moaning and smoking still.

"It's official. I HATE this house."

"It took you THIS long to hate the house?" She smacks at a burning piece of cloth on his shoulder to put it out. "I hated it the second we walked in. This place just drips evil."

How about we go with the CMW from Jiliana and the balance from the wand? Thanks guys.

Ro might be physically recovered, but she's not back to her old self. Her demeanor more resembles that of a drenched cat. She smiles a little at Karmid's humor, mostly because it shows he's not seriously hurt.

"I starting to think we can't burn this place anyway. All else aside, it's probably just too wet."

She takes the lead up the stairs while Karmid sorts himself out.

Wincing while getting up, Karmid looks at Jiliana and replies carefully.

"Hate is a strong, but extremely negative emotion that takes a lot of energy to maintain. Call me weird, but I try not to hate anything: Its just too tiring. I do hate some things...but I try to give most 'unknowns' the benefit of the doubt before hating it. This place has earned my hate now."

He then leads the group toward the upstairs area.

"Let's go."

The group makes its way carefully up the creaky and narrow staircase to the second floor of Misgivings. At the top of the stairs is a small landing with a single door to the east as its exit. Seconds after the last person ascends to the upper floor, the steps behind you begin to creek as if a second group is following you. You spin around, but see no one.

You are pretty sure that this, for once, is not a haunting, but simply the old wooden stairs settling after you have trod upon them.

"Hu? Was that us? How did we end up here?", Lia asks, while absent-mindedly playing with the Scarf.

No really, I think we were placed on a stair-up that is still unexplored on the ground floor - the stair (yellow 3 - next to manticore) we know about seems to be a bit differently placed.(a bit below and to the left from our position, there seem to be stairs, with a red line, barely visible between the spoilers)
For the record, I don't mind going from here :) Just figured it lends itself to an in-joke.

You encountered three stairways on the ground floor, two going up and one going down. Stairways going up on a map are marked by yellow arrows and down stairs are marked by red ones. I hope that clears things up.

Karmid opens the door leading from the stairwell landing and finds himself in another corridor with many doorways and passages leading off into the darkness.

The hallway to the south of you leads down the grand staircase going back to the manticore. To the north, two sets of double doors are visible, one to the east and one to the west. There is a third doorway to the southeast, another to the northwest, past the double set of double-doors, and another directly to the north.

The voice of a woman's voice crying can now be clearly heard by everyone, although it is still very quiet. It seems to be coming from the third floor above you.

I realize now that you probably wanted to go up the "main" staircase from the foyer. Sorry about the confusion, but since they lead to the same corridor, it ends up not making any difference which one you came up.

Karmid would have headed to the closest staircase going up.

Whispering, although he suspects there is no reason to do so, Karmid asks the obvious.
"Should we head for the crying or check the other areas first?"

Is the crying constant and steady, or does it seem to change as if reacting to things happening?

It comes and goes, but seemingly not according to you or any other factor that you can see. You'll hear it for a few seconds and then have minutes of quiet in-between.

Ro believes the pack of ghouls has captives from the farms in the house, and the crying is evidence of it. She's strongly inclined to go straight for the source of the crying, find the people, or person, before anything can go wrong.

But the creaking on the stairs, even though there's nothing to been seen, actually because there's nothing to be seen, keeps her from making an easy decision.

It reminds her again of her worry that the people are bait. Since there doesn't seem to be anything urgent about the weeping, so guesses the person isn't under immediate threat. The bad feeling about bypassing something and letting it come at them from behind wins out.

"Let's keep to our plan. We work our way through thoroughly, check everything before we move on. I don't like the idea of skipping over something finding our exit blocked by an ambush."

"Just don't think about the basement right now" She says as a lame attempt at humor.
