I have the blood of dragons in me, they should worship me...in time. For now the cardinal has given me a job to do Ulp thinks to himself as he bows deeply to Tiadora.

I Ulp. have heard of you and you skills. Have much work to do. ulp... he swallows and a bizarre sound escapes his mouth, it is obvious where he got his name. His common is broken and poor and he scowls when e speaks it.

Ulp then bows to all the rest though not as deeply as to Tiadora

Dren stands and walks over to the newest member of the team and dismisses his illusionary form.

A Kobold eh, glad to meet you Ulp, we look forward to what you can bring to the team. Can I see your natural form? I am always looking for new creatures to duplicate.

The voices around Dren suddenly start, chattering excited madness about another form to be able to take.

I am Dren...healer, shapeshifter and generally agree-able type of fellow, wouldn't the rest of you say? he smiles, though it seems a little...off.

It does make you think, you have never seen him mad...or should I say angry...

ulp... truly it is a gross sound

. Yes yes.

He shimmers and the form of the gnome fades to reveal a shiny royal blue kobold with bright wings folded against his back. His features are droopy to say the least and completely non-threatening, other than the odd sparks that seem to dance around his eyes. Unlike most other kobolds his throat seems wider and longer than most, more dragon like. He has bottles and flasks attached all over, a shining chain shirt, a short bow across his back and a blowgun at his belt.

you match now.

Drens natural form starts to pop and twist as bones contract and move into place, skin reforms and the color starts to change...then the magical disguise kicks in until he is the exact duplicate of Ulp...it is like you are looking into a mirror.

Take a 10 on disguise to give me a 32!

Halfling as been my chosen form to sneak around in...this could work as well! Though I guess it would cause a raucous in town seeing a kobold walking around.

Ulp pulls out a flask and downs the contents and his form shimmers and he looks like Dren, though a small version of Dren.

sneaking is what dragon born do best.

Trik smiles cheerfully back at you. "Wonderful! We should go bend an elbow sometime... Jax, right? I'll look forward to comparing notes."

Trak looks mournful. Dostan glowers sullenly. Elise looks thoughtful. "Yes, comparing notes is good. And also..." She leans back, steeples her fingers. (Zimu may blink a little in astonishment here. Finger-steepling? Elise has been taking lessons, somewhere.) "If we're going to protect you, that probably means eliminating some troublemakers at some point, whether crusading paladins, pious priests, or just greedy adventurers. That will be easier if there's already someone out there killing people.

"Yes, I think we're going to give Farholde a serial killer. Such things are not unknown in this town. We've studied the history. Trik here," she nods, "says there's probably some long-term influence from the Horn of Abaddon seeping through. Whatever the reason, I think that in days to come a maniac will begin stalking Farholde's streets. A maniac with a very distinctive style. So if, in a month or two, we have to eliminate Brave Sir Whosis or Holy Father Whatever," she spreads her elegant hands, "why, instead of a suspicious assassination, we have another hideous crime on the ever-lengthening account of the Newchurch Ripper."

Trik has his chin on one hand, elbow on the table, listening intently. Now he waggles his fingers. "Newchurch Slasher. Please? Ripper sounds so... messy."

"We want messy," Elise says firmly.

Trik wrinkles his nose, but does not push the point.

Tiadora nods curtly. "Advance planning. Taking the initiative. I approve. A good start, Eighth Knot." (You are briefly startled. This is by far the most lavish and effusive praise you have ever heard from Tiadora.)

"Very well then. If there are no further questions, I will see you this evening at Baron Vandermir's. Dress appropriately." She sweeps out of the room.

Those of you who do not have noble's outfits, or equivalent, may want to consider purchasing them. Before entering the Baron's, please let me know who is and who isn't dressed to kill.

Rather than purchase a noble's outfit..could Jax get his hands on a Sleeves of Many Garments as well? That looks handy to have.

Judge, your sleeves will do the job -- it's a 200 gp item copying a 75 gp outfit, so that works. You won't look /amazing/, but they can do a simple basic nobleman's suit. Jax, one set of Sleeves is currently available in town. Standard cost, 200 gp.

You have a few hours to explore the town, buy stuff, or otherwise make preparations. That done, you meet Tiadora just after sunset at a small guard post on the edge of town. This is the entrance to Calliver's Green, where half a dozen mansions of Farholde's wealthiest citizens are set around a lovely, carefully tended central park.

Tiadora is dressed in white again, looking angelic. "Baron Vandermir is expecting us," she says to the guard.

"Of course, my lady. This way," the guard answers after consulting a list. You are escorted to the largest, most impressive and opulent of the six mansions. The front door is secured by two guards wearing armor and livery. The guards are polite but firmly insistent that weapons are collected. "No stranger may go before the Baron so armed."

Knowledge (local) DC 15:

The Baron is the wealthiest man in Farholde, and one of the most powerful too. He's been in this house for a long time. He's always been a bit of a recluse, preferring to work through servants and hired help -- not a hermit or anything, he does occasionally appear in public, but not a man interested in the limelight at all.

Knowledge (nobility) DC 20:

If you are a knight, or claim noble blood, you can keep your weapon if you give your word not to draw it except in self-defense. Very specifically, this trumps a host demanding you disarm. Talirean law assumes by default that a knight or noble's word is good.

Judge, your long, long residence in town gives you +2 on all Knowledge (local) checks here in Farholde.

Male Vampire(former Dhampir) Bard(Negotiator) 13/Anti-Paladin/2 - [HP 209/231; AC43,FF36,T22; CMD32; DR/10 magic+silver; F+28,R+29,W+26; Per+31; Init +12]

Knowledge(local): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13
Knowledge(nobility): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12

As the Judge walks amongst the mansions, he recognizes many of them. Most he has been invited to for dinner one or more times. Others, well, lets just say in his younger days when he still enjoyed his human side's physical pleasures, some in those homes made the most enjoyable conquests. Now, however, his look is pure disdain. These are the people who gained wealth through their support of the crown. Some will likely change sides to Talingarde's new rulers, but all would feel suffering. Lost children, lost loved ones, lost limbs. Yes, he would make sure that these people who did nothing to aid him when the miserable inquisitors came felt suffering.

Unfortunately his self centered contemplation causes him to not pay attention to other more intellectual pursuits. And he completely fails his knowledge checks.

Being far too much of a dandy, Jax will go ahead and go all out buying an actual noble's outfit then. He wants to look his best. -75gp--Edit: Went to mark off the money and he apparently already has one. I believe its the one from one of the Captain's houses that he searched.

Also, if possible, he'll pick up a lesser elemental rod (metamagic rod of elemental spell) -3000 gp

Anyone who doesn't have a noble's outfit, either buy one and mark off the cash or note that you don't have one.

After handing over your weapons, you are met by a formally dressed butler. He takes you through tastefully decorated hallways, rich with thick carpets and works of art, to a dining room where a table is set for you. A sommelier appears and offers you a selection of wines. Once you each have a glass and are all comfortably seated, the servants disappear.

Knowledge (nobility) DC 15:

The house is decorated with the arms of House Vandermir, which are a variant of the arms of House Barca -- the ruling dynasty of Talingarde before they were overthrown by the current royal house, the Darians. Makes sense; the Vandermirs were originally a cadet branch of the Barcans.

Baron Arkov Vandermir enters the room. The Baron is a handsome half-elf dressed in burgundy and white. He looks quite young, even boyish, but the Judge knows that he is well over a century old. He holds in one hand a lorgnette -- a pair of spectacles with a handle. (It seems a slightly odd affectation in a man who is otherwise the height of understated good taste.)

"Good evening, dear guests. Please -- remain seated. Welcome to my home."

Sense Motive DC 16:

The Baron's eyes remain cold above his smile. You are not actually welcome here.

Sense Motive DC 21:

The Baron is suppressing a complex mix of emotions -- curiosity, ambition, hostility, fear. He is balanced on a knife's edge.

The Judge bows his head respectfully.
Good evening my Lordship. We are most thankful for the honor of being your guests this fine evening.

The Judge looks about the home. Your Vandermir shield is in splendid, one might say pristine, shape. One day I expect that once more that shield shall hang high in the Capital.

And with a slight grin the Judge concludes:
And, I must say that the years continue to treat you well. You do not appear a day older than when we first met nearly a half century ago.

A Very Profitable Shopping Trip

Spoiler:
With a few hours left before their meeting with the Baron, Jax headed through the streets of Farnholde. He wasn't very familiar with the area, but he had passed through a couple of times before. He walked down unfamiliar streets, following the directions of a half-conscious homeless man.

There. The sign was scarred, bearing a crooked wand under a wizard's hat. It hung askew from a single chain in the upper left corner, the sign dangling in the breeze. Blocky letters proclaimed "Cladius's Wand Shoppe," although it was hard to make them out under the grime.

The windows had obviously not been cleaned in a long time, many years of dirt and pressed faces marred it surface. The door was well-worn with the finish flaking off and the iron bands over it pitted with age. Jax presses it with his palm and steps into a dark room. Dust lays thick on a few shelves, no one sits behind the small counter. One would think it easy to just grab a few choice items and walk out.

The tiefling dropped his disguise once the door was closed. No one could see through the thick, warped and dirty glass anyway. His tail reached out, snatching a thin silver rod from a shelf. Jax turns it over in his hands. Arcane symbols for fire, lightning, acid and cold decorate its surface and a cluster of four coloured gems line the tip. This is what he was here for. Well, partially. He stacks to the counter and reaches to tap a clawed hand on the bell there, pausing just above its worn surface.

"Zoren, don't make me ring this."

At his urging, a man steps out from a curtained doorway. Red, greasy hair hangs down to his chin where a thin beard grows. He has a single, piercing blue eye with the other hidden behind a leather eyepatch with an elegant gold symbol curling across it reading "luck" in draconic. He flashes a smile that seems both friendly and menacing. A brown cigar hangs from his mouth and his eyes are bleary from drink. Despite all this, he seems fairly well-dressed when compared to the state of the shop.

"Jax. I heard you got nabbed in the south and sent over to Brandenscar. I also heard that there was an escape..I shouldn't be surprised you slippery rat."

The tiefling smirks and spins the rod over the counter. "No cage can keep the Sparrow for long. The world is changing, Zoren. Rapidly. Have you heard any news of the North."

The wizard nods again, picking up the rod and rolling it in his fingers. "I have. Why do you ask? You..you didn't have anything to do with that, did you? You're a forger and an art thief."

"The world changes and there is more to steal than art these days. Hearts, money...power. And there's more than enough to go around for those who know how to it. My fortunes have changed and yours can too, Zoren. All it takes is a few wrong choices and a realization that you can either get ahead of the crowd or fall into the pit with them. Which would you prefer?" Jax's words cause a gleam to grow in the other man's single eye; he motions to the curtain behind himself.

"You already know the answer or you wouldn't be here. That, or you're planning to shove that blade through my chest. Let's sit and talk, Sparrow."

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25

Jax gives up his sword reluctantly, but doesn't mention the daggers hidden in spring-loaded sheaths up his sleeves. He lounges comfortably, bowing his head and smiling at the Baron when he enters. He pauses at the Baron's words, having been half-out of his seat. "Baron, thank you for having us. You have quite the beautiful home. Did I spy an original Jayli Roja in your hallway? The Amaranthine Gaze, I believe. That wouldn't be the original, would it?"

A +2 Cloak is over the local baseline (4,400), so there's none available. A +2 Belt is 4,000, so there's a 30% chance (base 50% - 20% because it's a potentially useful item for the military). 1d100 ⇒ 65 Nope.

And, I must say that the years continue to treat you well. You do not appear a day older than when we first met nearly a half century ago.

"Hm." The Baron lifts the lorgnette to his eyes and looks long and hard, first at the Judge and then at each of you. (His lip briefly curls as he looks at Ulp.) "You, on the other hand, Judge... you look like Hell."

Since she's not here, I will roll a Knowledge (Nobility) for Zimu: 1d20 ⇒ 19

"Good chamberlain, our friend Sir... Medwin, here, is a knight of the realm. Do you not see his coat of arms? If he gives his word not to draw his blade save in defense of self or another, and in accord with the King's laws, you are bound to accept his word and allow him to pass. And of course," she smiles brightly, "he does so swear, upon his knightly honor. Does he not?"

sotto voce to Edmin: "what do they teach you people. nobles and knights get to keep their weapons if they swear." Elbow in the ribs. "swear damn you."

The Baron lowers the lorgnette and looks down the arch of his elegant nose at you. "A dying man, the kingdom's third most wanted traitor, three petty criminals -- and yes, Mr. Naismith, of course it's an original; I bought it from Roja myself -- and a kobold.

"You come to me as beggars, the last remnants of a forbidden faith. You will promise me much, of that I have no doubt. But all that I am likely to earn from helping you is the inquisitor’s pyre. Tell me, why should I help the likes of you?"

There's a silence for a moment. You notice that Tiadora is sitting impassively, face blank.

Dren leans forward as if to say something...then holds his tongue waiting for one of the others to speak...he does start to watch Tiadora a little more closely, trying to gauge her reaction.

Dren:

As far as you can tell, Tiadora is simply waiting to see what happens -- whether you convince the Baron to ally with you, or he throws you out, or you kill each other.

Edmin sneers and and points his finger at the baron. "Beggars? We come to you as champions!"

Black fire engulfs the knights hands as he continues. "We broke the wall with the aid of the Dark Prince! We are favored in his cause! Beggars? I am a Champion of the Dark Lord! "Edmin holds the Headsman's axe out towards the baron and shakes it.

Edmin seems to calm for a moment and shakes his head as he pats the flat of the axe blade. "You call us the last remnates of a forbidden faith? Baron, we are a new beggining! Join us Baron! Don't you want to be one of the new chosen? Or would you rather explain to the new king of Talengard, chosen by the Prince of Hell himself, how you missed your chance?"

The Judge has an uncaring look as Edmin speaks. When Edmin finishes:
Or, you can turn us in. I am sure that the Dark Prince would look kindly on you turning in one of his chosen. What would this accomplish for you? In all likelihood it would get you the Inquisitor's wrath faster than aiding us.

The Judge stares at the half-elf:
I am not a dying man. Quite the contrary, I am a man who has learned that there are greater and stronger forms. You should think likewise. You know what the intrepid laws of this land have done to your business. Yes, you are wealthy. But that is because you have carefully avoided the scrutiny of the Crown by living here in Farholde. How much wealthier would you be without the menacing Mitrans looking over your shoulder every day.

As I discovered, even in Farholde, one can only remain outside the law of Mitra for so long. Trust me, if you support us, you will sit high in the First's ranks. If you do not support us, then one of our corpses will likely be made to talk. And I do not believe you would want to have that happen.

The choice is yours. Support the side that will win and sit atop this land. Or support the side that will lose, even it it remains in power, and spend the rest of your life watching behind you for the next Inquisitor.

There is the small matter of what is most prudent for you as well. You are obviously a very intelligent man, operating outside the law for so long and so successfully.
Making us your enemy just compounds your concerns. We are not interesting in exposure, we operate in stealth. Helping us exposes you little while the potential benefits when the new order comes into being...well I am just guessing you are prudent and are not above hedging your bets. Helping us gets us out of your way quickly while showing the Cardinal that you are an asset...

Diplomacy assist auto-success for the judge. New total is a 35.

Cуровую says Goodbye to an old Friend
--
The ruins of Aldencross, Daybreak the Morning After

The winds are strong, they blow the black smokes coming from the still smoldering fires south, just where Sakkarot intends to march his triumphant bugbear army.

Last night's rain drenched much of the ground.

But the rain waters have not reached deep under the Lord's Dalliance, where real gold once found false love.

In a long forgotten tunnel built by Dwarves to keep secrets, a tunnel which in turn brought forth a darkness to lay Aldencross low, a simple ceremony is taking place.

In Giant

'That is deep enough great one. You may stop digging.'

A fiendish ogre grunts and starts to pull himself up from a hole that reaches his waist.

Cуровую turns to the linen wrapped figure next to her, although she can not see his face, she remembers the smiles it once wore easily.

She then in turn smiles at the fond memory.

Cуровую says a few ancient words of respect, admiration and finally protection to the figure wrapped in the linens.

She then gently kisses the covered forehead, then cheek and finally full on where the lips should be and says

'Farewell my friend, I owed you those. May you keep my goblin friend in good company.'

She then checks the Sepia Snake Sigil and other wards she left on the body to make sure they have been set properly.

Using Levitate she lowers the body gently into the newly dug earth.

Over her shoulder she hears the ogre's tribute.

'Goodbye smiley man ... you were, umm, nice to me.'

He then grabs the large shovel and motions to start covering the body, but is stopped.

'Wait a moment great one.'

Cуровую produces three tall glasses from the fort, and one of the few remaining bottles that innkeeper Barhold was quite fond of.

She fills all the glasses full, and offer one to the ogre then Mage Hand's another to the wrapped figure.

'To happy times past, and to fondly remembering them long into the future my friends.'

Ogre and Witch take long drinks, the third drink remains filled.

After a pause, Cуровую gives a gentle nod and the Ogre begins to refill the hole with dirt.

---

Above Ground

The Champion of Hell catches a glimpse of the Ogre walking towards the members of the group, sucking on a now empty bottle of fine wine.

'Grumble, where is Cуровую? The whole army is ready to move.

The ogre, licking his lips, then frowning seeing the contents all but gone looks at the antipaladin.

'She said she would be coming soon, she needed to make some magic stuff and did not want me to disturb her.'

The ogre shrugs.

---

No horses whine from the stables of Aldencross, no dogs bark in the now empty streets.

But somewhere under the streets of Aldencross, where real gold once found false love, the scion of the Eternal Hag, the child of the Wintery North, the Witch who would be Queen ...

Weeps like a babe.

Cуровую Creates a New Friend

The ruins of Aldencross, Before the Dawn the Morning After
--

'You will owe me a favor then, and put in a good word for me with Jax too?!' the sorcerer is clearly excited, at the idea of a favor owed, the promise of Jax, and in the ritual to come.

'Yes Rasia, although as I said, Jax is spoken for ... at least to some extent.'

The sorcerer thinks a little, 'But your sure he likes girls right? At least prefers them!'

Cуровую raises an eyebrow and despite herself allows a half smile.

'Yes he does ... 'Cougars' if you want to be specific. Ones that like to smoke.'

Raisa is all smiles now.

'See! Then there is a chance! Squee!'

'Ok let's get down to business.'

Raisa holds up the staff of her now dead ... now undead colleague.

Then she begins to dance and caper wildly in a circle around the dead body.

Swinging the staff to and fro in great sweeping arcs, her dance is quite mesmerizing.

She is getting good at this.

Raisa firmly grasps the staff in both hands, there is something like a flash of blackness, a momentary pulse of unlight that darkens the room she and Cуровую taken over in the fort.

There is silence.

Then, slowly, once dead hands twitch, once strong legs that lay dead move again. A head turns. She sits up.

"Yeah baby!" Raisa yells. "Rise! Rise! Riiiiise!"

The Seeker's fists slowly clench and unclench as the undead monk rises.

The Witch watches the ritual, studying and learning what she can, 'Well done Raisa, truly.'

'Thank you! I am getting the hang of this! I can command her to follow your commands like you requested.'

Cуровую looks from the sorceress to the once Pain in the Monk.

'Yes. Please do. That bytch has a long road ahead.'

Snort. Okay, let me think on this a bit. (And next time, give a DM some warning.)

I blame sleep deprivation, I thought I already did PM you! I was about to PM you but your already posting, I am alternating typing here and doing schoolwork, but I should really sleep before going to school in 3 hours.

I don't expect another Morsum or even a more capable Ragnar, this was more story and plot element.

Yeah I don't think you can hand over control of an unintelligent undead to someone else...not trying to rain on your parade but there is a specific feat to allow you to do that.
