Rowane |
Since there is no way to make bright light. Rowane will just cast a spell.
Rowane cast a spell and a magic crossbow appears and slams itself into one of the creatures.
spiritual weapon: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 101d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

The wounded creature manages to dodge the bolt of force.
Cora?

Cora takes a moment to watch the way the creatures move before she draws and carefully fires at the closest of the grioths.

In dodging Rowane's attack, the grioth leaves an opening for the keen-eyed aasimar. Cora's arrow finds some vital spot on the wounded creature, and it falls.
More to come when I'm able to post from a computer.
Machi-e |
Machi-e uses some of his Prescience, should the grioths attack him.
Prescience: 1d20 ⇒ 16
Not bad; we'll see if I need that for a save.
He spends the rest of his time summoning a small air elemental.
Summon Monster II.
DM Carbide |
Machi-e, you've already acted this round. The monsters get to act first at the top of the next round.
DM Carbide |
No problem; I was posting from my phone, and didn't provide a lot of detail.

The three remaining grioths launch themselves into the air and fly towards the party. Two alight and attack Nezos with curved blades made from some glasslike substance, while the third remains airborne and focuses its attention on Rowane. The half-elf is able to dodge both attacks.

Rowane? Machi-e, are you going to continue as you intended before?
DM Carbide |
Rowane shakes off the mental onslaught from the flying grioth and sends a bolt of force at it. This time, he's on target, and the already-wounded creature falls.
Machi-e?
Machi-e |
Apologies for the delay!
Machi-e changes his plans, seeing as how the grioths are falling, and lifts his hands to rain heavenly fire down upon the last grioth.

DM Carbide |
Machi-e hits and slightly wounds the last grioth.
The grioth is once again unable to connect with Nezos.
The last grioth isn't going to last until its next attack, so I'm going to call it here. Out of combat!
DM Carbide |
Thanks to the party's quick action, none of the villagers were killed in the attack. You have a minute or three before anything else happens.
Machi-e |
"Rowane, you've got good eyes. Can you search these creatures? I believe they come from other worlds. Perhaps there's something on their persons...er...bodies...that can elucidate this mystery. It makes me think that..."
Machi-e looks to see where the grioths landed. Was there something they were trying to retrieve...something from another world?
DM Carbide |
There is not. It looks like they were only here to attack the townspeople.
Cora Soutil |
Cora looks at Machi-e. "You said these things were from a different world. Could they be after those astronomy books? Why else would they be in this small town, attacking people at random?"
Machi-e |
"Perhaps Hunclay's meddling kept a portal open," muses Machi-e.
He scans the area for magic. "Which way did they come from?"
Nezos Parada |
"I only ever heard the bad stories of portals. Except perhaps the aiudara. Maybe they had some debt or slight left unsettled against the man?"
Rowane |
Rowane approaches the creatures and kicks them over. "Disgusting creatures are they not. Not sure what you want me to look for. They do not seem to be wearing much. However, the weapons they wield do look valuable."
Cora Soutil |
Cora walks over to look at the bodies, as well. "Valuable, you say?" As she approaches the corpses she looks around for anyone or anything that may look out of place- a summoner in the shadows, perhaps, or someone who didn't seem surprised by the attack.
Perception, just looking for anything that might tell us what these things were doing here: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 12 = 17
Machi-e |
"No way to speak with the dead," says Machi-e. "Stay alert. There could be more."
He turns to the villagers and the auctioneers and the like. "It would be wise to return to your houses until we are certain that danger has passed."
DM Carbide |
The only magic Machi-e detects in the immediate area are the already-identified items in the auction lots. Some of Rowane's colleagues at the temple see to the wounded villagers.
Before the arcanist can do more, a deafening roar fills the air. A large creature descends from the darkness to alight on one of the small storage buildings near the amphitheater. It's scaly and reptilian in form, with batlike wings and flaming spittle drooling from its jaws. Shouts of panic fill the air as the remaining villagers make to flee.

"Get to cover!" In spite of her own advice, Cora lingered a few seconds to watch the monster's movements and after her quick study, launch a single well-aimed arrow at the creature.

Machi-e pulls out a scroll of Enlarge Person and casts it on Rowane.
"The skies around here are truly infested," he remarks. "What's next, a gigantic space worm?"
DM Carbide |
Just out of curiosity, were you really wanting to Enlarge your (non-melee) cleric? Also too, enlarge person is a 1-round spell.
Machi-e |
Youch, I mean Nezos! Machi-e has no great options so he will busy himself with bringing the scroll out and seeking cover, if any.

DM Carbide |
Your spiritual weapon only lasted four rounds, and it's been at least a couple of minutes. Also, you didn't exceed the DC to identify by 5 or more, so I think you only get the ID and basic dragon type info. Light crossbows only do 2x damage on a crit.

Rowane and Cora land a couple of damaging missiles on the flame drake. Machi-e draws a scroll and runs for cover.
The drake inhales, then breathes out a stream of fire that lands between Rowane and Cora. When it hits the ground, it explodes into a ball of flame that burns Rowane, Cora, and Nezos for 15 HP; DC 18 Reflex save for half damage.

Cora Soutil |
Ref save, DC 18: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Cora leaps away into the sky moments before the explosion, though she's not able to entirely escape the flames. "Nice shot, Rowane!" She moves a little closer to the drake, lining up for another shot.

Machi-e begins to cast. His spell will take effect at his action next round. Rowane sends healing energy into the party, soothing the worst of the burns from the drake.
With an obvious (and dangerous) target presenting itself, the drake flies rapidly at Cora, stooping on her from above. Its jaws close on the aasimar with bone-crushing force, inflicting 21 HP + 1 HP fire damage.
Nezos can act at this point. The drake is 5' higher than Cora, so out of reach.

Cora drops out of the sky like a stone, barely controlled as she reels from the drake's attack. Since she's only 10 feet off the ground right now I'm going to say she basically lets herself fall, so that should be like 'jumped down on purpose' for 1d6 nonlethal damage.
Bleeding and burned, Cora turns and shoots straight back up into the sky, right at the drake's now-exposed belly.
Bow+ST+DA+Point Blank Shot: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 9 + 2 = 22

Nezos is up!
