SECTION 5.3: THE SECRET OF THE THUNDERER
Bodyguards to Lady Vanderboren, our heroes have refurbished an old pirate ship just in time to embark on a fateful voyage south.
Trapped in an awakened Sargasso, they seek the heart of it to escape!
"With sloping masts and dipping prow,
As who pursued with yell and blow
Still treads the shadow of his foe,
And forward bends his head,
The ship drove fast, loud roared the blast,
The southward aye we fled."

-Coleridge "The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner"

Round 2_______________________

Bryson Deepwinter_______
Bryson-Cat reaches out to slash and gnash at the salad monster (#44).
With a demonic scream, Bryson-Cat pounced on the vine-creature and… absolutely tore it completely apart! The only thing left are a nasty taste on his tongue and green ichor spatters on the crew and Marius.

.Suny._______
Seeing the threat to her fellow freinds and crew mates Suny bursts into a whirl of fists, feet and other extremities.
[ooc]The crewmen are amazed as Suny’s attacks tear into the creature. The shocks propagate through it’s body, but it’s clear that much of the force she is dishing out is lost to the flexible materiel the creature is made of.
Still, she is having an effect. Red62 is looking ragged now.

Burian Faldaeral________
Burian eyes the creature as he lashes out again with his hair. He aims at the vine beast's lower half and yanks.. trying to topple it.
The hair cuts into the creatures body a little, then trips it prone.

Burian:

The Vine-Horrors are resistant to all physical attacks except cutting.
It can animate other vines if they are nearby, like in a jungle.
It likes to grapple and drag away people.

(npc) Ghirrak________
Ghirrak’s punches hit again, but only did minor damage this time. Like Suny, his blows energy was largely absorbed by the creature.

(npc)Burian__________
Burian started with an acid splash, which made a satisfying burn on Red 45.

The crew attack the creatures, but only one hits for some damage on Red 64.

Round 3_______________________

Marius Hawk_______________________
Taking a step back, Marius let fly with his ring again, at full force this time.
The force-ram slammed into the vine horror and blew it back off the quarterdeck and into the fog shrouding the maindeck. Cries of alarm sounded by the crew, judging by the sound.

.Suny._______
Suny pauses for a moment, huffing as she catches her breath standing between the icky things and her freinds. Glancing over a shoulder she calls to the pair of crew closets to her.
"Form pairs! Get nets! Hold tha' nets wiff poles or boardin' hooks! Drap tha' icky's wiff 'em. Get 'em all tangled, like. GO!" She orders then turns back to the wet shamblers.
As the two crewmen retreated to grab pikes, Suny erupts in a flurry of punches and kicks. Mostly they are absorbed in the flexible material of the Horrors; but one punch shocks the creature severely. She pulls out a massive clump of something that seems to be important, and the creature collapsed in a welter of stinking rotting vines.
"We has met tha' enemy...... An' they is iky..."

Burian Faldaeral_______
Cutlass still in hand - ready to strike when the creature tries to stand, Burian whips his hair in a downward slash.
He hears Sunny's words, and adds... "Cutting weapons.. axes and swords will wound them most!"
Burian’s hair lashed out again, cutting into the creature again. As it stood up, his cutlass slashed into it also, though both injuries seemed light.

Bryson Deepwinter______
Bryson moves to help Marius. He causes a bolt of lightning to strike at the monster.
Bounding forward to keep the creature in sight, Bryson’s lighting bolt took another chunk out of it, leaving it smoldering. This did not stop it from standing up again.

Ghirrak Ironfist_______
With an irritated grow, Ghirrak draws a pair of rarely used silver daggers from his belt, slashing one of the plant creatures in front of him.
Ghirrak’s blade flashed, cutting a number of the vines holding the thing together.

The crewmen around you also pitch in, though less effectively.
Ghirrak’s man actually fumbled his cutlass! He wasted much time scrambling to pick it up.
Burian’s man hit, dealing some damage.
Sunny’s men came back with a net and a boarding hook. The net missed, but the boarding hook pulled it back again.
Marius’ two men leapt forward swinging cutlasses, one missed, one hit for modest damage.

The Vine Horror kept trying to stand up and attack, but Sunny kept hitting it and tripping it prone again. Once, twice, three times at least. It’s looking a little ragged too.
She looks about for who might need help with dealing with any other Ickys nearby....
Sunny glanced around for more enemies, but cannot see far in the fog. Nothing else close at least.

But missed.

Marius Hawk______
"Keep moving and keep the railings clear," Marius advised, following the railing down the ship, ready to blast any plant creatures which presented themselves back off the ship again.
Making his way past Bryson onto the maindeck, he crept forward until he could see a couple of crewmen apparently using cutlasses and torches to surprisingly good effect against another Vine Horror.

Ghirrak Ironfist _______
Ghirrak unleashes a series of lightning quick slashes, but finds himself distracted by the fumbling crewman.
Much of his blizzard of attacks are simply absorbed by the flexible plant fibers, but at least one punch did vital damage.

The crewmen around you also pitch in, though less effectively.
Ghirrak’s man barely hit again, doing minimal damage.
Burian’s man hit solidly, dealing average damage.
Sunny’s men threw a net over the creature, now that sunny had tripped it prone. They promptly shredded it with cutlasses until it was a pile of mulch.
Marius’ two men leapt forward swinging cutlasses helping the two others to attack Red 11. Two hit solidly for good damage, the other two missed with cutlasses, but one hit with a torch which burned and crisped the plant materiel.

They're called Vine Horrors, and while it's harder than it might be normally yes you can trip them.

Burian, Ghirrak, Bryson and Marius dispose of their individual opponents and/or rescue crewmen and make their way through the fog towards the waist, where a red glow and shouts indicate trouble.

Having trouble with the file, scroll down to page 2.

Coming to an open area, you see that the fog had been cleared in an area by an open bonfire in the middle of the deck. It looks like one of the ship's boats had been broken up and ignited with tar as an accelerant.
It looks as if the crew is trying to push the Vine Horrors into the bonfire, and the Horrors are fighting back.

It looks like Red 13 and 14 are struggling with two crewmen each in an even fight.
It looks like Red 38 is successfully being shoved towards the bonfire by three crewmen.
It looks like Red 12 and Red 37 have succeeded in grappling and pinning crewmen to their bodies and are dragging them towards the railing.
It looks like Professor Urol Forol is shooting fire and sparks at Red 15 with a Staff of Fire and shouting encouragement to the sailors.

Tumbling across the deck, she tried to trip it. But with all the vines coming off of it makes it more difficult than normal and it doesn’t go down.
"Here! Give that'n back! Bad Icky-thing!"

Burian Faldaeral______
"Put out that fire! Now! It is burning through the deck to the gunpowder stores!"
He runs that direction, and assists Sunny by slashing at the vine creature
Burian’s weird hair easily lashed out to grapple it, cutting it for minor damage in the process.

Bryson Deepwinter______
Bryson-Cat runs at the closest vine creature as he tries to reach Urol and mauls it.
Bryson cat threaded his way through the melee and pounced on the burning Vine Horror heading for Professor Forol. In a blur of fang and claws, he shreds the plant creature completely apart apart, leaving a cloud of sparks and a spatter of mulch covering everything in the area.

(npc) Captain Ghirrak_______
Ghirrak charged forward and made a flying kick, trying to bull rush the creature (Red 37) overboard.
Connecting solidly, the creature and his victim are flung backward, toppling over the railing. They fall, but are brought up suddenly as they are hanging from Burian’s prehensile hair. Burian is hauled closer to the rail by their weight as the creature’s vines snake up towards him.

Three crewmen force Red 38 into the bonfire and cheer as it goes up in flames.

More crewmen struggle with Red 13 and 14, to no result.

Red 37 reaches up and grapples Burian as well.

DM only:

Red 12: 26
Red 37: 36 (Grappled by Burian)

TACTICAL OVERVIEW

Suny is conflicted.

On the one hand... um, hair. Poor Burian is working hard at not letting one of the crew get taken away. The fellow now danging by a bunch of hair threads.

On the other hand... The ship IS ON FIRE

(O_o)

Perception:1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23

Quickly moving to the railing she leans over and, with a deft flick of her hand, palm something into her mouth.... Only to thence blast the danging plant creature with a blast of sound.

Mechanics for the DM:

Spend two Ki points on 'Forgotten Nija trick'
Spend two Ki points on Breath of the ancient
Dragon type chosen is Soverign

So Suny does her sneak attack (2D6) in sonic damage to hopefully flat footed and helpless dangling plant creature.

Sonic Attack:2d6 ⇒ (2, 3) = 5

Thence Suny tries to kick the rope lying on the deck over the side so that the haning crew-person has something to hold onto when the icky thing expires.

Acrobatics:1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11

(¬_¬)

With... the whole rope pobably going over the side with a role like that......

Male Human Wizard 8

"Done!" Marius called, turning his attention to the fire, "Everyone! Eyes closed! Now!"

After giving the crew scant seconds to comply, Marius cast his spell, converting the blaze into a spectacular and much too close display of fireworks.

Not that he saw it himself, having shut his eyes tightly at the moment of detonation. A momentary flare of light had seemed a lesser evil than a cloud of choking smoke, and either of course was preferable to the gunpowder stores exploding.

Casting pyrotechnics to extinguish the fire (or at least a 20 foot cube of it, depending how big it is), and using the fireworks effect. Anybody with line of sight to the fire will be blinded for 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 rounds, DC16 Will negates. This may include the vine horrors, depending on whether they have eyes.

spellcraft to ID Marius's spell: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (11) + 12 = 23

Burian grits his teeth as his hair momentarily carries the weight of foe and crewmember. He shuts his eyes as instructed by Marius, and hacks at the vine horror with his cutlass. Unable to see his target, he fails to connect.

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 1950percent miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 12

Ready or not, Marius' cast spell caused the bonfire to explode in a cascade of blinding fireworks! The blaze of fiery sparks and exploding showers of sparkling motes disorient and blind half the crew and all of the vine creatures.

Seizing the initiative, the rest of the crew manages to force, intimidate or cut the vine creatures to pieces and force them overboard.
Burian's weird hair manages to extract a crewman from being dragged overboard, but a quick headcount reveals two crewmen unaccounted for and probably kidnapped.

Not that Bryson cares, but which two are missing?

While everyone collapsed on deck to rest, exhausted after the fight, Bonden curtly reported to Captain Ironfist that both Cody McCool and Lirith Veldirose were missing; probably taken by the vine creatures.

But as the crew ponders this news, lookouts report another attack!
More waves of the creatures, more whispers of 'outsidersss...' more attempted captures by the vines.

And when this one is beaten back, yet another surged out of the humid mists of the sargasso night.

It is only when the morning light appears overhead and burns away the night fog that the attacks stop, and you are left alone.

For now.

Bryson:
Throughout all of this you feel that the creatures impetus to attack came from the Heart of the Sargasso itself. Somewhere in the middle, miles away now.
And you also know, without any doubt that they will come again endlessly until your ship is empty like all the others trapped here, taken to be... eaten? Sacrificed? You still don't know.

Annie, looking exhausted, goes about triaging everyone according to how wounded they are.

How wounded are you at this point?

Bryson is not injured at all.

Bryson goes to Ghirrak. "Ah'ma get some rest. Then ah'ma go to the center and kill the evil that reside there. You can come or not. But if you stay and wait, they will come again tonight and again and again until you are no more."

For those that need it...

When all the wounded are gathered, Annie proceeds to raise her holy symbol high and Channels Positive Energy twice.
Sparkling golden energy washes over you all, easing the injuries you've taken.

Burian sighs in relief as the divine energy courses through his bruised and bloody body. He nods to Annie. "Thank you."

He then looks around. "Unless I'm needed for a watch, think I'll sack out for a bit as well."
