DM-Camris' SAVAGE TIDE: Chapter 3, The Savage Kraken's Wake! (Inactive)

Game Master Camris

SECTION 5.3: THE SECRET OF THE THUNDERER
Bodyguards to Lady Vanderboren, our heroes have refurbished an old pirate ship just in time to embark on a fateful voyage south.
Trapped in an awakened Sargasso, they seek the heart of it to escape!
"With sloping masts and dipping prow,
As who pursued with yell and blow
Still treads the shadow of his foe,
And forward bends his head,
The ship drove fast, loud roared the blast,
The southward aye we fled."

-Coleridge "The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner"

Ghirrak and Bryson spot that with the toppling of the pirates mizzenmast, a number of figures plunge to their deaths in the sea or hitting the deck. One who does not seems to hover in place sixty feet over the pirates aft deck, turning and lobbing a fireball into the Savage Kraken's fore ballistae. It exploded, flinging burning crewmen overboard.

The loaded pirate pinnace veers to one side and stops approaching the Blue Nixie's blind side. Some crossbows are fired at Bryson, but miss.

PIRATE SHIP DECK
Here is the pirate ship with a number of pirates still aboard. You may start your movement at any left side railing square.

Bryson's flight took him to the pirate arcanist, but missed.

If you want to board by crossing the yardarms, you'll need to make a climb check, then an acrobatics check.

With the enemy mage thoroughly revealed and without cover thanks to the fall of the mizzenmast, Marius cut loose with what he sincerely hoped was overwhelming force, conjuring a bolt of lightning which lashed up from his post on deck to strike at his opposite number.

Ahead of her, she can see several pirates also moving among the rigging, crossing over to engage some of the Nixie crew who were shooting down into the melee on deck.

Acrobatics check please.

The Captain leads his section over the boarding planks.

ENEMIES________________________

The pirate mage, revealed under the Faerie Fire to be a heavily tattooed Osirian Bloodfire Sorcerer, snarled at Bryson and a ball of fire grew in his hands. But Marius' lighting badly distracted him, so he threw the fireball down at Marius.
The fireball exploded on deck, and Marius will take 6d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 3, 5, 4, 6) = 24 fire damage, Ref save DC17 for half.

The other enemies only just now realize the Savage Kraken crew has entered the fray; they look around, the turn and face you.

Well, that had been an unpleasant and painful experience. Marius had emerged from the conflagration decidedly charred and unsteady on his feet. Still, retaliation had always been a possibility. On the plus side, his foe had burned a fireball spell on him, rather than picking a spot for maximum damage to the ship or crew.

Trusting the crew to deal with any lingering flames, and with Bryson now engaged, Marius shifted to distraction tactics, sending a streamer of light corkscrewing upwards to detonate in the mage's face. With a bit of luck, the mage would be too thoroughly beset to properly defend himself.

Ghirrak Ironfist______
Ghirrak wordlessly opens up with a series of rapid strikes at the first enemy pirate he encounters.
Unluckily missing wide with many of his attacks, he nonetheless managed to hit the pirate once, wounding him.

Trusting the crew to deal with any lingering flames, and with Bryson now engaged, Marius shifted to distraction tactics, sending a streamer of light corkscrewing upwards to detonate in the mage's face.
The sorcerer flinched as the Snapdragon Fireworks detonated in his face, but he simply blinked as he resisted fire and turned a nasty grin in Marius’ direction.

Dice rolling and explanations:

So, given developments, the idea is to get one of the ropes in the rigging. Loop it around the pirate who's the current focus of Suny's attention. Then kick said person off the sail arm and down into the group of enemies pressing hard against our crew.

Perception:1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14 (To see the lay of things down below)

Att Roll 2:1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12 (To round house kick the pirate off the yard arm and make them swing down and into the enemy group below. Is against their completely flat footed AC. Since they don't see it coming)

Dam Roll 2:1d6 + 2d6 ⇒ (5) + (1, 4) = 10 (Which... is hopefully enough to send the person swinging down, like a human wrecking ball into the clot of enemy pirates below)

In the melee.... one of the pirate ship's ropes seems to come loose. Whipping up and looping around the person standing on the yard arm. (The target at '19-M')

Just as suddenly the sun bronzed form of Suny pops into being behind the fellow and deftly swings a tanned foot into the side of their head.

The force of which drives said unfortunate entangled pirate sideways off the yard arm... to come swinging, hurtling down into the crowd of enemy pirates who are to Ghirak’s left. Pressing his crew like a swarm as they try to press them back!

Suny bounces, claps and cheers with glee. "Hehe! Is jus' like playin' skittles back home!" (^_^)

Acrobatics:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18 (To caper about on the yard arm)

With the mage apparently resistant to fire, Marius was inclined to leave Bryson to deal with him. He could always intervene again if things seemed to be going badly. Instead, he directed his attention to the pirates swarming the crew. A pair of scorching rays and another firework shot out at the mob, dealing pain, distraction and mayhem.

Casting scorching ray and spending a move action to use snapdragon fireworks again. I'd appreciate it if you could pick out the targets and handle the dice rolls, as I'm on a mobile device and looking everything up isn't as straightforward as it could be.

Round 4______________

Bryson Deepwinter_______
Bryson screams his rage at the mage and continues to claw and bite him.
He hits solidly, missed, then critically slashed him across an arm, and blood spurted from a cut artery.

'Sunny' ______
In the melee.... one of the pirate ship's ropes seems to come loose. Whipping up and looping around the person standing on the yard arm (Red 5).
He missed the body of the pirates, only managing to knock one overboard before falling unconscious himself.

Sunny wrote:

He was wearing filthy silk shirt and red pantaloons, a sash and belts holding many weapons, some silver and gold rings, bracers, necklaces, dark hair jutting out from under a headscarf, has a hoop ring in his left ear. Several scars on his chin and nose.

Burian Faldaeral_______
Burian steps away from the attacking pirate, and whips at and around him with his hair.
5'step to 31,I
Burian’s hair lashed out and entwined around the pirate. His body deformed as it was crushed, blood fountaining out of many cuts.

And in a flurry of blows too fast to see, Ghirrak beat the pirate in front of him to death. His cutlass and body clatter to the deck.

A pair of scorching rays and another firework shot out at the mob, dealing pain, distraction and mayhem. Casting scorching ray and spending a move action to use snapdragon fireworks again.
He hits and wounds two of the pirates.

Tumbling through the chaos to land behind #5 and strike

Male Human Wizard 8

Well, that wouldn't have been Marius's response to his opponent becoming a dead weight. Still, Bryson could decide on his own battle strategies.

With his own longer-ranged spells largely spent, Marius joined the boarding action, flicking another firework up into the rigging as he went.

Moving onto the pirate ship, about where the arrow is, and targeting pirate 4 in the rigging for 1d4 ⇒ 3 damage, DC15 Reflex for half and to avoid being dazzled.

Round 6__________________________

'Sunny'_____________
Sailor Green 4 yelped when Sunny whispered into his ear. Then nodding he grabbed a rope and swung across the the main fighting top. Another rope swung next to him and Sunny appeared when she booted pirate Red 10 across to bump into Red 9, but he didn’t fall off.
"Whheeeeee!" Comes Sunny's call of glee from some where above before suddenly appearing on the central mast of the Blue Nixie.

Bryson Deepwinter______
The crossbow bolt bounces off Bryson's thick hide.
Bryson attempts to maintain the grapple and he does.
He tries to move the two of them over the water rather than a ship, but otherwise does not slow the descent, and calls for another lightning bolt
Bryson absorbs the damage. Electricity plays across his teeth as he snarls in the mages face while they plummet.
Both Bryson and the sorcerer plunge into the ocean. The sorcerer is clearly unconscious at least.

Bryson:
You got a glimpse of the Nixie’s quarterdeck; you saw several crewmen fighting with pirates, and in particular, Lavinia engaged with a tall well dressed pirate that could only be Longshaks LeShiv. Lavinia is marked with long bloody whiplashes as the grinning pirate Captain easily holds her off.

Ghirrak Ironfist______
Moving across the distance with stunning alacrity, Ghirrak hurls himself into the thick of the fray in support of his crew.
Backflipping behind Red 5, Ghirrak crushed the pirates throat with a punch. He drops dead.

Marius Hawk______
With his own longer-ranged spells largely spent, Marius joined the boarding action, flicking another firework up into the rigging as he went.
Moving onto the pirate ship, and targeting pirate 4 in the rigging.
The pirate Red 1 screamed as he was blinded and stumbled off the fighting top. Falling into the ocean, he is immediately attended to by the sharks attracted by the fighting.

Burian Faldaeral_______
Burian strafes a few feet, then slashes two adjacent pirates with his hair.
Burians hair lashes out, wrapping up and crushing the two adjacent pirates, their blood fountains out of their bodies and liberally covers the deck.

Allies__________
The rest of your crew mop up the rest of the pirates on the pirate ship.

You see across the far side, the pirates still engaged with the crew of the nixie. You see the Jade falcon leader fighting hard, but none of the others.
Except Sunny, who sees Zan appear behind one of her pirates, stab him in the back and toss him overboard. He grinned at her and threw her a sloppy salute.

Enemies____________

You also see in the rigging the pirates chasing Sunny realize where she went and swing over onto the Mainboom to pursue her.

Round 7_____________

Players take their turn in order of posting, enemies will go last.

TACTICAL OVERVIEW: IN THE RIGGING

Bryson uses his wings to launch him and the unconscious mage into the air. He moves over the Savage Kraken where he then drops the mage on the deck near LeShiv before landing behind her to give Miss Vanderboren some help.

I presume that's a double move, but in case it's not, he will then change into Bryson-Devil Cat

Male Half-orc Monk (Iron Mountain) 8 |HP: 60/61 | AC:26 Current 29, T 19, FF 21 | Fort: +9 Ref:+10 Will:+12 (+14 Enchantment) |CMB +12 (+16 grapple), CMD 25 (27) | Init+3 | Perc +13 | Ki Pool 9/9

"Good work! Secure the ship!" Ghirrak shouts in command even as he races across the deck of the pirate ship. Barelling toward the edge t breakneck speed, the Caplain of the Savage Kraken launches himself in a spectacular leap across the open sea and air, taking him over to the Nixie's deck.

Acrobatics: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22

DC = Number of feet between decks

Island Elf(link) HP 20;56;Fort+6;Ref+11;Will+4;Perc+9; Init+4;AC17(19)Defensive:21

Swinging in the rigging:
Sunny looks at Pirate 10 then quickly to her allied friends left, right and behind her before simply saying/demanding,

"Give up!" Bluff:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18(Plus any bonuses for the poor soul now being surrounded by 'Our' team) She declares with steel in her voice.

Sense Motive:1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18 (How is Pirate 10 reacting)

Perception:1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19 (What are their mate's doing?)

Though she does also keep an eye on both the Pirate that's followed her across to the main mast. The other Pirates already ON the main mast as well as the other Pirates on the Aft-mast who are possibly the ones doing all the shooty, shooty.

Glancing to her allies Sunny grins,

"Okeys, get ready ta' be hasin' fun!"

Diplomacy:1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22 (To boost their spirits for the coming fight with Pirate numbers 2,3 and 6)

Not sure if Sunny can gainfully/actually DO anything else after all that.... Maybe, just maybe throw a smoke bomb over at Pirate 6?

Ranged Attack against the square Pirate 6 is in (So to hit 'Touch AC of 10, I believe)

Att Roll:1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19

Burian follows his more fleet of foot allies onto the Blue Nixie... taking the boarding planks rather than a leap.

Male Human Wizard 8

Lobbing another firework into the rigging, Marius made his way to the far railing, assessing the situation aboard the Nixie and deciding where his intervention might be needed.

Snapdragon fireworks on pirate 2 in the rigging, 1d4 ⇒ 2 damage, DC 15 Reflex for half & to negate dazzled condition.

Round 7_____________

Bryson Deepwinter______
Bryson uses his wings to launch him and the unconscious mage into the air. He moves over the Blue Nixie where he then drops the mage on the deck near LeShiv before landing behind her to give Miss Vanderboren some help.

Ghirrak Ironfist_______
Barelling toward the edge t breakneck speed, the Caplain of the Savage Kraken launches himself in a spectacular leap across the open sea and air, taking him over to the Nixie's deck. He lands behind a knot of pirates.

'Sunny'_______
Sunny looks at Pirate 10 then quickly to her allied friends left, right and behind her before simply saying/demanding, "Give up!"
Pirate 10 leapt off the boom and slid down a rope to land next to Bryson.
The other pirates just laughed as they approached.

Glancing to her allies Sunny grins,
"Okeys, get ready ta' be hasin' fun!"
Diplomacy:1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22 (To boost their spirits for the coming fight with Pirate numbers 2,3 and 6)
Throw a smoke bomb over at Pirate 6?
The smoke bomb engulfed the lead pirate in smoke.

Burian Faldaeral______
Burian follows his more fleet of foot allies onto the Blue Nixie... taking the boarding planks rather than a leap.

Marius Hawk______
Lobbing another firework into the rigging, Marius made his way to the far railing, assessing the situation aboard the Nixie and deciding where his intervention might be needed.
Snapdragon fireworks on pirate 2 in the rigging, 1d4 ⇒ 2 damage, DC 15 Reflex for half & to negate dazzled condition.
Pirate Red 2 grabbed his eyes and stood where he was, yelling about ‘Can’t see!’.

Allies__________
More Savage Kraken crewmen pour across the gangplank to engage the enemy.
Lavinia, already wounded, attacked but was easily batted aside by Longshanks LeShiv.
In the rigging, Zan moved up to attack Red 6 while a Nixie crewman moved up to attack Red 4.

Enemies____________
Pirate Red 10 dropped down behind Bryson and attacked!
cutlass attack: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 5 + 2 = 9 for a possible 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Longshanks LeShiv is a tall man with dark hair and a cruel grin. Teeth blackened with rot are visible, and you can smell his breath from where you are upwind. He lashed out with his rapier and whip, jolting Lavinia backward and more of her clothing is torn off as well as a welt appearing on her body.
”Ye’ll be an almighty fine prize yersel’ milady!” He taunted, exulting in his superior swordsmanship.

Greater Magic Fang: +1 to all
Barkskin: +3 natural ac
Call Lightning: 4/6 bolts

Bryson ignores the pirate that came up behind him as he steps past Lady Vanderboren to get to the pirate captain. "Now ya die" he says. A harsh, bitter smoke rising from his mouth and eyes and trailing from each swipe of his clawed hand.

With blinding speed, Captain Ghirrak pummels the nearest sailor, his eyes locked on Lavinia and the black souled bilge rat her would tear in half.

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
1d8 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12

Male Human Wizard 8

Deciding to forgo that final firework, Marius slipped closer to the action and set about tilting the odds ever so slightly.

Moving to E5 and casting Haste on himself, Lavinia, Bryson and the top two crew members. +1 to attack rolls, +1 dodge to AC & Reflex, and one extra attack on full attack actions for 6 rounds.

Clarification:
There is a fallen mizzenmast blocking access between the maindeck and the quarterdeck (where Lavinia and Longshanks are); a ten foot tall pile of difficult terrain that must be climbed (or jumped) to pass.
So at the moment nobody on the maindeck can see either one; Only Bryson can right now.
Since she screamed in pain, those on the maindeck need to make a Perception check DC15 to hear Lavinia in trouble over the noise of battle.

Swinging in the rigging (^_^):
Suny looks about as one of the pirates appears from within the smoke (Number 6) and frowns as she notes the pirate still on the tressletree/Fighting top with them (Number 3)

Profession Sailor:1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15

Acrobatics:1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23 (+14 to Jump)

Grabbing a rope from those hanging about the main topsail she simply leaps away from the mast, initially looking like she's again leaping away from combat.

Bluff:1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24 (Pirates need a 'Sense Motive' roll higher than Suny's bluff to fall for the ruse I hope)

However, her intent and arc of flight swings her tanned, brown self waaaaay out wide with her aim comeing in at the pirate threatening Zan (Pirate 6 And hopefully with Flanking plus surprise)

Att roll 1:1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 7 + 2 = 19(Against possibly Flat footed?)

Att Roll 2(Ki:1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 7 + 2 = 12(Against possibly Flat footed?)

Att Roll 3:1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 + 2 = 5(Against possibly Flat footed?)

Dam Roll 1:1d8 + 2d6 ⇒ (6) + (2, 1) = 9(Plus Sneak Att if surprised)

Dam Roll 2:1d8 + 2d6 ⇒ (5) + (4, 4) = 13(Plus Sneak Att if surprised)

Dam Roll 3:1d8 + 2d6 ⇒ (7) + (6, 3) = 16(Plus Sneak Att if surprised)

Hoping to incapacitate the fellow and thence move on to aid the sailor (Green 4) who's being threatened.

Hopefully eliciting a sound like THIS from the fellow as they fall.

Perception:1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11

And... it seems Suny is having sooo much fun she doesn't notice anything at all about what's happening below. :P

NOTE: I am truly hoping that swinging out so wide and wild like that take the pirates by surprise etc (^_^)

Male Human Wizard 8

In that case, revised action: Staying put and casting haste on himself, Burian, Ghirak and two crew members; snapdragon firework at the closest pirate for 1d4 ⇒ 2 damage plus the usual.

Male Half-orc Monk (Iron Mountain) 8 |HP: 60/61 | AC:26 Current 29, T 19, FF 21 | Fort: +9 Ref:+10 Will:+12 (+14 Enchantment) |CMB +12 (+16 grapple), CMD 25 (27) | Init+3 | Perc +13 | Ki Pool 9/9
