The guards burst out laughing when Zhi presents her gift. "Oh, it looks like it's just my size!" the sergeant says. He pulls at his neck, peeling off a disguise and revealing the face of a grinning Vudrani woman with golden eyes. You may or may not remember her as the "guard" that waved you through the line at the senate building on the Day of Exaltation.
"My apologies for having a bit of fun at your expense. We needed to test your ability to deflect nosy authorities. Welcome to the Kitharodian Academy, agents. My name is Kathann Zalar." She holds out her hand for the strap-on. "If that truly is for me, I might just put it to good use later. In the meantime, why don't we head inside for coffee and a tour of the facility?"
A closer look at Kathann reveals a forked tongue and a pair of small fangs in her smile.
DM Brainiac |
Kathann laughs. "Very well. The ocarina may not be as fun, but the Academy will appreciate its return."
The other guard pulls of his disguise as well. Beneath the mask is a baby-faced blonde woman. "Go ahead and bring it to the headmaster, Cassaranda. I'll take it from here." Cassaranda accepts the ocarina and departs.
Kathann gives you a quick tour around the Academy's campus and allows you to sit on classes as you wish, introducing you to curious attendees as "visiting scholars." The classes range from vocal training to stage presence to musical theory. Once you have seen the area, she escorts you to the faculty lounge.
Kathann pours fresh cups of coffee, tea, or wine for each of you, depending on your preference. She hands you the drinks and sits down across from you. "Lady Lotheed seemed optimistic about your group back during the Exaltation Gala. I'm pleased to meet you in a more formal setting, and I'm quite pleased you didn’t die. So please do tell me: what is your purpose in working for our princess?"
Though she tried to be subtle, it doesn't escape your notice that Kathann has slipped a little bit of some elixir in each of your drinks...
She rolled a 2 on her Sleight of Hand check. :P
DM Brainiac |
Kathann chuckles. "Fair enough. I apologize for the examination, but in my career, paranoia is a survival trait. Normally, the Lion Blades would never consider working so directly with strangers, especially those with a political agenda, but recent events have forced our hand and we need new eyes in Zimar quickly. I am legitimately curious, though, why you have thrown your support behind Eutropia. If you don't mind indulging me..."
d'Valois Mai Zhi |
Zhi feels no need to point out the woman's clumsiness, but when her wife dumps out her tea, Zhi sets hers back down on the table.
"I want to have confidence in our children's future," she says simply. "And I see Princess Eutropia as the best horse in the race - if you'll pardon the comparison."
Zileska Vestalina |
Zileska finally chimes in.
"For me, it's threefold."
"First," she says, ticking off a finger, "I'm a Taldan patriot. I don't want to see our country shoved into yet another abominable foreign war just for the sake of raising the banner of some would-be emperor who'll throw lives away for a political career. I don't want to see Taldor riven by civil war. I don't want brothers and sisters taking up arms against each other, sons and daughters left to rot in foreign soil, endless cycles of violence that continue to erode our nation's culture and development."
"Second," she continues with the next finger, "I think it's high time that we got rid of primogeniture. Everyone in this room knows that women can fight, ensorcel, scheme and lead as well as any man. Primogeniture is a ridiculous and archaic notion, and as part of the aforementioned development of our nation, it needs to go so that we can recognize good ideas whether they come from men or women or people who don't fit either of those molds."
"Third," she says with another finger folded down, "as a priestess, I am interested in the spiritual welfare of the people. I may not be one for monolithic bureaucracies but I also believe that the people need to be free to pursue their best selves and their passions, and nobody can do that while looking over their shoulders wondering if the entire country's going to disintegrate or who's fighting who. This kind of squabbling between various nobles is bad for people's personal development as it forces them to respond to these crises when they should be spending their time on personal development and satisfaction, instead of trying to figure out which pop-up petty noble of the week is the biggest threat to their livelihood."
Maria Greyson |
Maria didn't have much to ask the Princess that Melodie didn't cover. She did want to ask how aware she was of her brother's situation but wasn't sure how to broach the subject cleanly.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As they were questioned, she was about to throw her own two-copper into the discussion when Melodie produced the "gift". At which point she just facepalmed in exasperation and a bit of embarrassment, glancing sidelong at Safina to see her reaction.
Know Local: 1d20 + 1d8 + 13 ⇒ (12) + (7) + 13 = 32
As the woman revealed herself, Maria recognised what she was, but chose not to say anything just yet, though it did explain her desire for deception. Her own answer was rather more straightforward.
"Aside from the bits about primogeniture that the others mentioned, Taldor's stagnating by trying to ride along past glories and trying to regain the past. While I've no objection to tradition, I do have issues when the whole mentality is holding society as a whole back. And, with what we've recently learned about Pythareus, he's more and more seeming to be the very embodiment of that stagnation - he's preying on an ancient grudge with Qadira that only holds as much sway as it does because so many of those in power see that as Taldor's 'glory days'. He talks of a return to Taldor's past, seemingly not realising that the mistakes of the past are what led to the nation ending up in the state it is now. Getting Taldor out of this slump is not something we can do while so focused on the past."
DM Brainiac |
Kathann nods sagely at your explanations. "Good reasons, all."
She give the rest of you a chance to share your views, after which, she seems satisfied. "Alright, let's get to it, then. Normally, true Lion Blade training takes months or years, but we're going to give you a crash course. We'll teach you just what you need to know about Zimar and its people to get by for a few weeks. I'll explain more about the situation there... if you survive training! I'm sure you'll be fine, though. We pride ourselves on our minimal mortality rate!"
You'll spend the next week undergoing intense training, focused not on combat but on stealth, deflection, observation, and disguise. Have each PC select one Charisma‑based skill, one Intelligence‑based skill, and three additional skills (which can include additional Charisma‑ or Intelligence‑based skills) to focus her training on. Alternatively, combat‑focused PCs can opt to focus on training their melee attacks or ranged attacks in place of a skill. Each PC can attempt at a single DC 22 skill check or an attack against AC 22 each day; success means that the PC has achieved 1 week (7 days) of training in that skill or type of attack. Once a PC succeeds at this check with at least four of her chosen skills or types of attacks, she succeeds at the training challenge.
At the end of your training, you'll gain uses of inspiration for the remainder of the adventure to use on those skills or attacks you have trained in. I'll give you more details about that later.
Sara Burke |
Sara spends her month off with her girlfriends, constantly flitting from Lotheedar to Stachys to Oppara, cavorting and merrymaking as she has rarely had the chance.
It's a welcome change for her relationship with Malphene, stressed as it is by distance, but both the ladies know it is only temporary.
When not entertaining, she primarily spends her time in Stachys writing letters and training her birds, growing insular from the other girls, socializing with them less and less.
And when the Princess calls for them, she holds her tongue, following dutifully along.
She cracks her knuckles when the guard demands to search them but chortles as she recognizes the woman. When Kathlan insinuates the harness as being her size and a genuine gift, Sara noticeably perks up, but the conversation moves on before she can flirt with her.
Sara gawps and marvels at the Academy grounds on their tour. "I always dreamed of going to the Academy as a child. It seemed so, well, glamorous. And now here we are, and it's every bit what I dreamed."
At tea, Sara declines the offer of drink, wanting to keep her head clear for this type of discussion.
"I'm from the city, yeah? One of the 'Unbearded.' Grew up in the Narrows, clawed my way into high society any way I could, idolized it. Initially, I just wanted to be accepted, to no longer feel like the lowest of the low, but now? I want what's best for Taldor, and I don't mean the nobles. I want all citizens of our great and noble empire to be exalted, made equal, to remove the yoke of oppression placed upon us. Most nobles would claim that's our responsibility, to serve in the military and hope for recognition, or succeed in the arts and dream of the same, but that's a lie to bully us into complacency. If the common folk are ever going to attain equal status in this nation, it will be because we demanded it, and we had an Empress who acknowledged us. I believe in Eutropia."
Brainiac, could I train both attack and Dirty Trick?
If so, my picks are attack, dirty trick, Diplomacy, Handle Animal, and Linguistics. Otherwise, swap dirty trick for Intimidate.
Attack: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (15) + 16 = 31
Dirty Trick: 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (11) + 22 = 33
Dip: 1d20 + 36 ⇒ (7) + 36 = 43
Hande Animal: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (9) + 21 = 30
Linguistics: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
Intimidate in case: 1d20 + 27 ⇒ (17) + 27 = 44
DM Brainiac |
A dirty trick is still technically a melee attack, so you don't need to train in both. Intimidate it is.
Zileska can retroactively roll her checks for training, but I'll keep things moving.
Earlier...
Both Malphene and Lucretzia are eager to spend as much as time as they can get with Sara before duty calls her away again.
Now...
The week of training with the Lion Blades' various specialists passes swiftly, which each of you managing to pick up as many tips and tricks as possible. At the end of the week, Kathann Zalar calls you all together.
A wave of Kathann's hand encompasses an enormous performance hall, which now stands empty and echoing. "The instructors have praised your progress this past week, so I believe it's time for a final test of your skills." She gestures to several ornate, lion‑themed masks on the edge of the stage. "These masks are tools the Lion Blades use to discreetly simulate dangerous training scenarios. Once your don them, you'll be able to see, hear, and feel opponents as if they were real. Your task is simple: eliminate the witnesses. And please be careful with the masks, as they are quite old."
AS you don the masks, you can see four guards milling about on the performance stage. Once all of you are wearing the masks, one of the guards points and shouts, "There! Arrest the traitors!" and the guards rush to attack.
Maria aggressively assaults the nearest guard, stabbing him several times in vital spots. He groans and crumples to the floor. As he falls, though, the images from the masks begin to swirl and heave. The linnorm's jaws snap shut a few inches away from Zhi as she darts forward to its side. As she quips about the challenge scaling, you can hear Kathann say, "Are the masks malfunctioning again? Last week Cassaranda had to fight a two-headed goat. Stay here and I'll fetch an artificer."
Sara is unable to avoid the dragon's jaws as she moves in, though. Its teeth painfully tear into her and inject her with burning posion.
Undeterren, she smashes the stanchion over the linnorm, badly wounding it! Zhi stabs it in the back, and Sara's attack sets her up for another strike.
The linnorm's AC is 29 so the crit just confirms. Sara takes 19 damage and must make a DC 24 Fortitude save against poison or take 2d6 fire damage and 1d4 Con drain.
There's not a map, so I'm going to assume that Zhi can take a 5' step moving around the creature to flank with Maria.
Yo, what the f&&%? Uh, maybe the best bet would be for us to just take off our masks and avoid embarrassing ourselves further, haha
DM Brainiac |
The linnorm disappears when Zhi takes her mask off, though it still seems quite real and deadly for Maria, Melodie, and Zileska!
Kathann holds out a healing potion for Zhi to administer to Sara. "It's a test of your ability to adapt and think laterally. Sometimes, fighting isn't the answer, and the path of self-preservation is the right choice. So by taking the mask off, you've passed! Do feel too bad--nobody's ever beaten the linnorm..."
The rest of you may continue the fight or take off your own masks.
d'Valois Mai Zhi |
"I still don't see what the point of that test that was," Zhi says as she administers the potion to Sara. "In real life you can't just take off the mask. We would be dead."
Once she's satisfied that Zil and Maria are safe, she jogs off after her wife.
~~
Assuming she can find her ...
Once Zhi finds her love, she puts her hand gently on her back.
"Are you ok?" she asks. Her anger and annoyance for the 'test' being replaced with concern.
Maria Greyson |
Removing her own mask as she heard Kathann talk, Maria sighed in annoyance.
"I should've thought to try that sooner, really. Got too engrossed in the scenario, tried to think of what we could do while in there."
Melodie d'Valois |
It's obvious to Zhi that her wife is frustrated. Melodie is as tense as a board.
"I'm sick of this Zhi!" She says, anger clear in her tone. "These damn Lion Blades and their bloody tests! Kathlann has been against us from day one and I hate it! I hate it!"
