Viv seems a bit surprised to see one of the strange amalgamations still spinning and spitting, but this doesn't slow her from flinging another metal shard into it.

Kaska is confused. On the one hand Holg had warned that physical attacks on the ghosts were useless, but he is still using his sword and it seems to work. Not wanted to be left out Kaska hurries up behind Holg. She still has to stick with her pistol though, since there is no room for her to edge around Holg and get at the remaining ghost. At least she now knows for sure her pistol will work on them.

Kaska squeezes off two more shots, draining the pistol's battery.

"Those were pesky ghosts... did you see how it used the trap to damage us?" Holg frowns visibly angry, then breaths deeply and shows his Gorum symbol to channel energy.

"So what now? It seems this tower has some source of steam somewhere" Holg observes the vents trying to discern if there might be a way to disable them in the whole tower.

The pipes and vents seem to run all the way up from the floor to the ceiling, and likely rise up to almost the top of the tower. If there's any way to disable them, it will likely be in the upper levels.

Most of the rooms around the central portion of this floor are similar in appearance, with a narrow bed stripped of bedding, a dresser, and an empty clothes rack. A stash of gold leaf, valuable silverware, crystal goblets, and other valuables are scattered throughout these rooms. Altogether, it is worth 1,400 gp.

The northwest room is filled with crates and boxes, the walls covered with shelving holding linens, cleaning supplies, and other mundane tools. A strange cocoonlike object made of tightly wound strips of wire and metal ribbons is affixed to the highest shelf on the curving northern wall.

Fireday joins the others in searching, and his attention is immediately drawn to the strange metal cocoon. He examines it carefully, wondering if he's heard rumors or stories of things like this...and more importantly, if they're dangerous. He didn't want something to blow up in his face like Holg's.

Holg bashes through the rooms without wasting much time, only giving the others little time to collect whatever thing seems valuable for their adventure "The tower must have many guardians to need so many bedrooms"

It is only when they spot the cocoon that the Kellid pauses back and let's Fireday check the thing "What's that? Can we eat it?" while he tries to help the android to find out what is this "It might be tasty"

Putting their heads together, Fireday and Holg realize what the strange object is--a protective shell built by a small cloud of nanites. Such nanites often have specific purposes; they spin cocoons like this to preserve their programming until brought within close proximity to the object or location they've been programmed to augment. The best course of action with your new find would be to keep it safe until it activates on its own.

Removing the cocoon reveals a small crack in the wall. Peering through it, Fireday can make out another staircase on the other side, though there is no obvious way to reach the stairs from this floor of the tower.

The last room on this level, near the northeast landing, contains a large metal tub, a sink, and a toilet, all separated from each other by crumbling wooden partitions. Clean water is pumped in through pipes and effluence is pumped away. The tub features hot and cold running water. Apart from the novelty of the chamber, there is little of interest here. Stairs lead up to the next floor.

"So we better keep this with us then... isn't it?" Holg saves his sword on his back and puts his brutish hands on the cocoon trying to be as careful as it is possible for a Kellid to uproot the thing from the wall "Perhaps there is a baby-droid inside"

As Fireday reveals about the other stairs, the man shrugs "Let's try to climb up through the stairs past the trap, we might reach the same point as the mysterious stairs behind the wall"

Before reaching the stairs hall, Holg let's Kaska check if the trap triggered by the gearghost has not been rearmed, and if so he advances to check the last room "Perhaps we should have a bath here, eh Viv?" just before the Kellid climbs up the stairs after Kaska.

Flights of stairs ascend and descend to this large atrium. The ceiling above the landing is open to the floor above, while doors on the south and east walls of the atrium allow access to other parts of this floor. Short messages have been written above three of the doors. The air in this room smells strangely acrid.

The northern door on the east wall is not labeled, but the one south of it is marked "Lab 1: Alchemy." The door in the south wall is marked "Lab 2: Siphoning Research," and the one that leads southeast is marked "Lab 3: Gaseous Ooze Research."

Holg grins back at Viv "We do not want random goo around, we have enough strangeness with what Coen produces"

Once they step on the higher floor and read the door labels, Holg points towards the southeast "Gaseous Ooze? That is the kind of random goo we don't want around. The other too seem less dangerous, perhaps we find something about Casandalee or why Xoud became a ghost"

The Kellid points to the southern door "Shall we check that one first Kaska?" Holg casts guidance on Kaska and himself just before they move on.

Fireday gingerly takes the cocoon from Holg once they pull it loose.

"For all I know, this could be the product of those machines we smashed under Iadenveigh. I doubt it's a baby android though, we usually emerge from such forges in an adult shape."

Before they open the door, he recasts ironskin and bull's strength upon himself, knowing battle was probably inevitable at this point.

"Indeed. I've never encountered another android that was a physical child, and we don't give birth or have working milk-makers," adds Viv.

Plucking up another metal shard she floats it, rotating, over one finger while she faces the southern door, waiting for the warriors to open it.


The wooden and metal furnishings of this room have been smashed to pieces. The fragmentary remnants have been arranged into spiky piles throughout the room, while the bones of a long-dead dwarf lie in a mangled heap at the far side of the room.

A miasmal form roils in the air as barbed tentacles emerge from the central mass, coalescing into razor-sharp talons and claws. The thing shrieks as it notices you and begins to fly towards you!

Knowledge (planes) DC 18:
This is an elemental creature of air known as a mihstu. Mihstus rely on their insubstantial nature to close with opponents quickly, engulfing the nearest threat while continuing to attack any who seek to deprive them of their chosen victim. When a mihstu manages to embrace a foe with its body, it drains away the creature’s vital fluids at an alarming rate.

The churning winds of a mihstu’s body automatically deflect nonmagical projectiles (such as arrows, bolts, and sling stones). All other ranged weapons (including magical projectiles and thrown weapons) have a chance to miss. Mihstus are immune to electricity but vulnerable to cold damage.

"Uuuugh," groans Viv, rolling her eyes. She wings a shard at the creature, not really expecting to be able to hurt it.

Despite Viv's uncertainty, her blast tears into the creature's misty form, injuring it! It floats forward, unable to reach the kineticist, but choosing to lash out at Holg instead. Fortunately, his armor protects it from its barbed tentacle.

Holg negates with the head "You androids are definitely an interesting race" and delivers the cocoon to Fireday for him to care.

Their churning winds deflect all non magical projectiles" Holg gulps as he finds himself at the range of the mihstu's tentacle "Refrain to use electricity, but use cold if you have it, because they are specially vulnerable to it!"

The Kellid makes a step back and raises the symbol of the greatsword and the mountain casting divine power and entering into a ferocious rage "Gorum give me strength to stand in front of this horror of air!!!"

The man's muscles increases extraordinarily in size while his eyes inject in blood and he loses control "Uaaaah!!!"

Kaska scoffs at Holg's idea of the metal cacoon containing edibles.

"There's never anything inside metal that can be eaten" she states flatly.

When Fireday and Holg conclude the thing is a nanite shell she's apprehensive about it, especially when Fireday decides to harvest it from it place on the wall an carry it around.

"I don't see how having that thing with us could lead to anything good. We already have problems with the things in here not having solid bodies. If it cracks open or hatches, or whatever it's supposed to do, it could be full of nanites. What will we do then?"

Kaska leads the way along, checking for danger, until they find it.

"Ugh, again no solid body" she moans when the thing Holg calls a mihstu comes at them. His warning about not using electricity is just as well. Kaska hasn't yet bothered to put a new battery in her pistol.

Instead she takes the magical battle axe in both hands and advances on the airy blob. Time to see if this will cut up something without an actual body I suppose.

When the mishtu emerges and Holg explains its powers, Fireday calls Iomedae's power to empower his weapon once again!

Viv seems a little concerned by Holg going full berserker and flubs her kinetic shard.

Kaska and Fireday each score a hit on the mihstu and Coen blasts it with magic missiles. The ice on Fireday's weapon causes the creature to shudder momentarily but it resists succumbing to it. Holg bolsters himself with divine power while Viv's attack goes wide.

The thing lashes out with its barbed tentacles, raking Kaska twice. Its tendrils wrap around her and hold her tightly in a deadly embrace, siphoning away her blood, tears, and other vital fluids.

Holg unleashes his divine fury, and even though he only hits once, it is a devastating strike that tears into the mihstu's wispy body. Fireday follows up with a powerful strike of his spade, destroying the elemental creature and freeing Kaska from its deadly embrace.

When you have a chance to search the dwarf's bones, you find three gems--—a garnet worth 500 gp, a sapphire worth 4,500 gp, and a pale blue rhomboid ioun stone.

A Holg full in anger and desire to destroy darts to the next doors before his divine power can slip away from him. With his eyes gone he bashes the first door, then the second open.


Holg bashes his way into the Gaseous Ooze Research lab. The tables and shelves in this large laboratory are all coated with a thin greenish slime. One desk is heaped with pages of notes, and a human skeleton dressed in moldy robes lies slumped over it. A large glass tank atop the easternmost table is shattered and shards of glass litter the floor of the room, while a pale green haze floats in the air.

With a wail, a malignant cloud of shadows slides out of the skeleton. Its skeletal maw eerily babbles as the creature’s claws manifest from the darkness.

If asked before it happened, Kaska would never have guessed the forcible removal of liquid from one’s body would be all that terrible, at least compared to plenty of other things she could name. As it turns out, it’s actually agonizingly painful. Enough so to force a scream from Kaska.

This is not to say there is no upside at all to her circumstances. Without the pain to divert her attention Kaska might have been extremely concerned about just how close the manic Holg’s sword was coming to her as he a Fireday tore apart the creature. At least she didn’t have to put up a struggle, the thing was dead before she could recover her wits enough to react.

Kaska is still on the floor nursing a thundrous headache and desperately sucking down water from her kit as Holg rampages on into the next room.She pulls herself to standing and hurries after him.

Right after she enters and identifies the threat, she stops stock still and stares at the thing Holg seems so upset about.

Viv's attack misses, and Fireday and Kaska can only stare blankly at the babbling spirit. The fury of Gorum flows through Holg, though, and with three mighty slices, he tears the undead asunder, scattering its spectral essence!

Unfortunately, the spirit was not the only threat here. The green mist moves towards the cleric, pulsing with seeming voracity. Horrid shapes form within the cloying fog as it moves to engulf Holg!

Holg may either take an attack of opportunity on the fog or attempt a DC 17 Reflex save to avoid it. If he takes the AoO or fails the save, he will take 3d6 negative energy damage and be staggered. Everybody may act!

Kaska is beginning to wonder if she's entirely sound of mind at the moment. Already suffering a headache from the dehydration, she walked into another room where Holg was killing something and seemed to have blacked out on her feet. When she regained her senses Holg is killing a new something with the old something is now gone.

She decides to take a few moments to get herself grounded again. Changing out the battery in her gun for a fresh one seems like a good thing to do during that time.

Brainiac, how long am I fascinated for?


I forgot to mention that the fascination ended when the spirit was destroyed. But it doesn't matter too much since Viv and Holg did so much damage.

Viv's blast tears through the hungry fog, severely damaging it. Holg hacks the strange gaseous creature apart with two slices of his blade, eliminating the threat!

When you have a chance to search the lab, you note that the skeleton slumped over the table still wears a voidfrost robe, and a wand of gust of wind (18 charges) is at her side. Several spellbooks are among the table, containing 12 1st-level, six 2nd-level, and four 3rd-level spells.

Notes on the table describe the work of one of Furkas Xoud's apprentices, a woman named Ananda Visk. She was charged with the investigation of how certain gaseous creatures exhibit similarities to ooze creatures, combining features of vaporous and protoplasmic life. Her notes describe her research into a roiling mist imprisoned within a glass cage. The reports begin very clinically—enumerating the density, resilience, and indeterminate composition of the mist she has been tasked to study—but devolve quickly into senseless ravings about corpse-white faces speaking from within the mist. She grew more and more obsessed and secretive, and the last entry reads, “Xoud has stopped checking up on me—it has been days since he stopped by. I think he might be planning to steal my research. I’m out of food, but I dare not exit the lab. I will shatter the tank and join with the hungry fog, and we shall then be as one!”

Holg's muscles suddenly come back to normal as the strange gas is destroyed. The Kellid breaths heavily while the blood in his eyes disappear. He tenses his jaw and punches the wall as if holding up a great pain, to the point that some drops appear on his eyes.

The man takes some moments to recover and he holds towards the wall during that time while the others come back to themselves and study the apprentice's room.

"Ananda Visk... does... the name... tell you something..." the breath of the Kellid is still heavy by when he joins the search of the many writings. After studying the wand he gives it to Coen so he can disperse gases they might find in the tower, and places the book and robes in the common stash "It seems Xoud did not... did not talk many with his... apprentice"

"Didn't end well for this apprentice, either," she adds to Holg's comment.

"There... was a series of gaseous monstrosities. Probably Xoud experiments. According to the notes here one was probably his apprentice and made some bad decisions when Xoud ignored him" Holg shrugs and strokes his own nape "Well... sorry for that"

Still breathing fatigued after his rage, the Kellid moves back to the previous room and collects the gem and the ioun stone. His eyes shine when he inspects him with detect magic "Wow! Look at this!" he gives the ioun stone to Fireday "This will increase your strength Fireday. Take it"

Only when they all are ready, he takes a long breath, now more rested and moves to the next door in this level, marked with the Alchemy Lab signal, but this time, he let's Kaska check and open the door.

The last door on this floor opens onto a large, tidy laboratory that has a foul, chemical odor. Several tables, a few shelves stacked with jars and baskets, and an empty desk line the walls.

The baskets contain an array of towels, medical instruments, and common chemicals. One of the chemicals has degraded, creating the foul but harmless odor in the air.

Enough gear can be salvaged from the tools found in this room to create an alchemist’s lab worth 200 gp. In addition, a few of the shelves still contain viable pharmaceuticals and potions, including three potions of gaseous form, 1 dose of cardioamp, 1 dose of cureall, 3 doses of grade III hemochem, and 4 doses of torpinal.

This laboratory can function as a medical lab for the purposes of crafting technological items, although you will have to provide energy for the lab yourselves.

"Once we cleanse this place of the evil that infests it," Fireday replies, following Holg and keeping an eye out for more vaporous threats.

The last door leads to stairs that ascend to the fourth floor. Fireday's keen eyes spot another nanite cocoon wedged near the ceiling in the northern part of the stairwell. You take it with you as you continue up.

A door on the fourth-floor landing opens up onto a spacious atrium. A wide balcony overlooks it, its low iron railing wrought with geometric symbols. A window high on the west wall is protected by narrow metal slats. Three doors stand in the east wall, but only the central door remains intact, with a short message written above it--"Lab 4: Animal Research." The northern door has a hole burrowed through it, while the southern one has been completely smashed apart.

Two hulking creatures lurk here. These bird-like beasts are mostly head, lunging forward on four scaly legs. Wisps of noxious black vapor trail from their hooked beaks.
