Malen made sure to stow away any identifying insignia that might clue people in to his religious affiliations before moving with the others closer to where the slaves were being auctioned off. Pharasma tended to stay aloof of the affairs on Golarion, focusing instead on those that were in transit to their next plane of existence, but Malen would not have Her name sullied in conjunction with a slave transaction, no matter how well-intentioned.

Maps | Info | Bashiel's Loot Table

Yeah, either of those are plausible, Zamanda. I figured it would be best not to assume since you haven’t met one during our story (till now, I suppose).

The auctioneer has only just begun the auction as you decide to try buying the Shoanti man. Bashiel can hear multiple interested parties bidding on the slaves before the Shoanti. Among the bidders are a couple men who don’t look much different than Bashiel, perhaps they're from Osirion. If Bashiel’s eyes don’t betray him, there's also a bidder who bears a disturbing resemblance to Ramoska and is currently being sheltered in a palanquin being carried by what appear to be zombies. A group of four muscular, bearded men also eye all the slaves closely. Despite looking quite fit and well-fed, the men all dress in rather plain clothes. A couple other bidders are present, but they don’t look as serious.

The first few slaves go fast, going for various prices between 100 and 500 gp. While the vampire and Osirioni bid on each one, they’re always outbid by the four bearded men. The four look quite happy as they win each slave.

Finally the auctioneer arrives at the Shoanti man. He begins the bidding at 50 gp. The bidding quickly shoots up to 200 gp before you even have a chance to throw up a hand. The four men are the current high bidders once again. There’s a brief pause that gives you a chance to bid if you wish to do so.

This is a slave auction and, unlike ebay, there’s no buy it now option, so you’ll potentially need to bid multiple times unless perhaps you decide to bid a lot near the beginning. In either case, we might need to do a bit more back and forth than usual for this to be practical.

Zamanda calls out 250 gold

It is her intention to keep bidding them up by 50 each time, so let's progress until they either stop or we get to, say, 1,000 gold, at which point we can jump back into the bidding war if necessary.

I mean, she could just bid that up front, but she doesn't want to become a target for the thieves guild, or spend more than she has to.

... I am also just assuming that there are no children for sale. Probably best if you don't tell me otherwise, because I am guessing that it will break the game if Zamanda opens an orphanage rather than going out to find the Shoanti.

Maps | Info | Bashiel's Loot Table

Yeah, we'll just go ahead and say there are no children. Dealing with children in dangerous situations can be... ill-advised.

The auctioneer raises an eyebrow as a new voice calls out a bid on the Shoanti. The same group of four men outbid her, followed by a higher bid by the vampire. The four men bid again, seemingly determined to with the auction. The current highest bid, held by the four men, rests at 1,000 gold.

[CAMPAIGN COMPLETE: BECAME KALEM LIGHTSWORN]

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14

What can Kalem tell about these men. Do they seem to be bidding now out of spite? Or do they truly want the shoanti?

Maps | Info | Bashiel's Loot Table

Kalem's not really sure what the men are up to, but they certainly seem to want the Shoanti. But that also seems to be the case for all the other slaves at the auction.

[CAMPAIGN COMPLETE: BECAME KALEM LIGHTSWORN]

Perception to see if the 4 men have any obvious bodyguards: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18

If not, Then Intimidate: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (15) + 17 = 32

Intimidate if no guards seen:

Kalem walked over to the four men. He knew that he could been intimidating. His size, weapon...and obvious heritage, tended to have that effect. He glared at the four men as he walked over. As he did so he willed his fingers to extend into wickedly sharp claws, which he flexed as he walked. Once next to them, he shouted ”One thousand two hundred!” He then turned and looked at them, with a look that said It isn’t worth bidding for this one.

Maps | Info | Bashiel's Loot Table

Kalem doesn't see any guards, but it also doesn't look like the four men are in particular need of guards.

Still, when the bloodrager walks over and extends his claws, the men take half a step back and their eyes widen. They don't seem so much frightened as surprised.

There's a pause in the bidding after Kalem shouts his bid. After the count of three, the auctioneer calls the auction. The group has won the Shoanti.

[CAMPAIGN COMPLETE: BECAME KALEM LIGHTSWORN]

Allowing himself a small smile, Kalem walked off to collect the shoanti. He figured it would be best to not be seen with the rest of the group, lest the four know them all to be together.

GM Roll(s):

1d20 + 19 ⇒ (16) + 19 = 35

The auctioneer takes Kalem's 1200 gp and hands over a chain to which the Shoanti man is attached via a collar around his neck. His arms and legs are still bounded as well.

The auctioneer then hands a key to Kalem and, shaking his head, says, "Never seen someone pay so much for so little. Good luck on getting a return on your investment."

Despite the crude way in which the auctioneer refers to the Shoanti, it's immediately apparent up close why he would say such a thing. The Shoanti man is emaciated. Even if he were in perfect health, he's rather thin and doesn't look well-suited to manual labor.

The Shoanti keeps his head down throughout the transaction, avoiding eye contact with Kalem or anyone else.

DC 35 Perception:

You notice one of the four bearded, muscular men following Kalem. He doesn't look like he's about to attack at the moment, but is being careful not to lose sight of Kalem in the sea of people in Downmarket.

”Today’s your lucky day, old timer. Know what a Paladin is? I’m taking you to one now.” As he said this he dug out some travel rations, which he passed to the shoanti. ”I’m just the muscle. So no point asking me any questions just now. Don’t get too excited, but you’re going to be free real soon. Just need you to answer some of his questions, and then we’ll take you home.”

With the shoanti man in Kalem's care, Bashiel stares for a moment at the rest of the slaves. It would be good to free the rest of them as well. But doing so by enriching the very slavers that were behind their capture felt wrong. And not only that, but any gold would go towards enslaving more people.

I'll be back for the rest. Somehow.

He takes a different path out of the square and then heads after Kalem.
Since I assume no one knows Shoanti, if our new party member doesn't know common, anyone have a solution? If not, we could buy a scroll of Share Language for Ilsa or Zamanda to use.

Zamanda knows Shoanti.

No paperwork for the slave sale? Nothing "official" that we have to do to free him?

Seeing the group split up, and understanding why, Zamanda notes Kalem's direction, lets Ilsa and Malen know what she is doing, and then ducks into a clothing store, or stops at a stall, buying an outfit for the Shoanti man. Just normal traveler's / explorer's clothing which I am hoping is readily available. Afterward, she moves to catch up with Kalem and the rest of the group.

If you ask the auctioneer, he’ll tell you that the collar around the man’s neck denotes that he is a slave. Even when unschackled and unmanacled, a slave’s collar stays on. Removing the collar signifies that someone is no longer a slave.

The Shoanti man, who appears to be in his forties or fifties, takes the rations but just holds them in his manacled hands. He doesn’t seem to know what Kalem wants him to do with them.

Not seeming to fully understand Kalem’s words either, the man briefly looks up before looking back down and saying in broken common, “What want? Feed you?”

Zamanda finds a clothing stall nearby, several actually, and purchases an outfit for a couple silvers. She rejoins the rest of the group without issue.

Zamanda doesn't ask the auctioneer, but hopefully removing the collar is something that will be obvious when we free him, or the former slave himself will know the significance.

Catching up with the group, hopefully someplace fairly private, Zamanda gives Kalem 1,200 gold, saying Thanks for doing that. I really appreciate it. I have no idea why those guys were bidding so high. Everyone else went for 500 or less. Can you unshackle him, please? I'm going to explain things to him.

Then she turns to the Shoanti man and speaks to him in Shoanti. As she does, she gestures to the food that the former slave is holding, you see her holding up some clothing that she just bought and offering it to him (once his hands are free), and at one point each person hears their own name, and it is clear that they are being introduced.

Shoanti:

Hello, my name is Zamanda. We only participated in that auction in order to free you. You may eat the food you were given if you want it, and I bought some clothes for you, if you want them.

She shows him the clothes, but doesn't hand them to him yet, since he is busy being unshackled and already is holding food, but as soon as he is ready, she will.

You are now free, and if you want to leave us now and find your own way here in Kaer Maga, you are free to do so, and I will give you some gold so you can find yourself a room if you like. We won't chase you.

This is Kalem, Bashiel, Malen, and Ilsa. We are going to travel out into Shoanti lands, and we would like you to come with us, to be our guide on the way, and when we get you home to your people, you can stay with them. It is your choice though. You can come or stay. You are free either way.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (20) + 21 = 41

She stops there, trying not to overwhelm him, and waiting to see how he will react, whether he wants to stay in Kaer Maga or come with them.

"Maybe they could tell somehow? Others seemed to think that he wasn't worth that price. Even though... a human life..." Bashiel shakes his head in disgust. When Zamanda gives Kalem a big pile of gold, he passes his own share of 300 gold to her. "Please, it wouldn't sit well if you were the only one to sacrifice to help him."

He stands a few feet away as Zamanda begins speaking in Shoanti and tries to look reassuring and supportive. When he hears his own name being spoken, he gives a smile and (not knowing any better) extends a hand to shake.

The Shoanti man seems shocked as Zamanda begins speaking to him in his native tongue. His shock turns to relief the longer she talks.

By the time Zamanda finishes and Bashiel reaches out his hand, the man gladly shakes it. Then you hear his stomach growl and he devours the ration from Kalem.

He feels around where his collar once was, wincing as he touches raw spots where it had rubbed against his skin. Then he proceeds to strip off his shorts, apparently unconcerned about being naked in front of you. He already looks better by the time he finishes putting on the new clothes from Zamanda.

The man freezes in place, glancing to the left and right. He then looks back at the group and studies each of you for a few moments. It seems he's still incredulous about what has taken place in the last few minutes.

With none of you seizing him and attempting to replace his collar, he finally speaks to Zamanda in Shoanti.

Shoanti:

"Many thanks, bright one, for freeing me from that living nightmare. I'm sure your ancestors smile upon your deeds. My name is Belor. I do not know much of this place, only where my mas... my former masters took me and held me. I much desire to be with my people once again. If you would let me go to them, I would be more than happy to take you with me.

"I... I do not know what else to say, except thank you again. Please tell your companions that as well for me. I am ignorant of the common tongue in many ways. I want them to know they have my deepest gratitude for what they've done for me.

"If you wish to see my people, I would also be happy to tell you anything I can about them. Their ways are not like those of the Kaer Magans or of other Varisians."

The Shoanti man's stomach growls once again and he holds out the empty container where the ration once was. Tentatively, he asks in common, "More?"

Malen looked on in curiosity as the bidding continued to go up, the bearded quartet not seeming to want to lose a prospect, no matter what the condition. When the bidding ran up to a ridiculous sum, the priest was about to issue a word of caution when suddenly Kalem did...something...and then called out a bid that was not eclipsed. Glad that this task was completed, the cleric skulked off with the others away from the slave market.

Perception: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (8) + 16 = 24

Understanding the man's needs, even if there was a language barrier, the priest nodded when the Shoanti asked for more. "I'll go fetch him a meal, if you want to ask him about his people in my absence?" The cleric looked around for a nearby tavern or restaurant of some sort, hoping to procure the starving man some food.

Responding to Malen, Zamanda says Why don't we all go? Belor here has agreed to guide us, and now that he is dressed and without chains, they likely won't turn us away anywhere. We can go shopping later.

She explains to Belor that they are going to find a place that serves food where they can talk further.

Once they get to a tavern or an inn and have ordered some food, she tells the group that Belor wants to express his gratitude to them, and is happy to answer questions about his people.

She translates questions and answers as needed.

When Zamanda translates Belor's initial words, Bashiel nods to the shoanti and says in common "Pleasure to meet you Belor. We'll be relying on you, and hopefully also your people, for guidance in more ways than one."

Once comfortably situated at an inn, Bashiel can't help but first ask "Before we talk about the Shoanti, would you share how you ended up a slave, and what you know of the slavers and their work around Kaer Maga? I'd heard about the slave trade going on here, but I'd never seen it in person. It's..." He's at a loss for words.

That's a great idea Ilsa.

She talks to Belor for a moment in Shoanti, and then tells Ilsa

He has agreed.

She grins.

Most of that is really what they already talked about, but she asks Belor if he thinks anyone will try to re-enslave him, and what tribe (Quah?) he is from, explaining that they are planning to talk to Thousand Bones, and has he heard of him. She also translates any new information for everyone.

No obligatory shares of the slave price. It was Zamanda who wanted to do it, and she accepts the cost. He could probably use some armor or a weapon if you guys want to help him out though. :)

Kalem passed the man his cold iron dagger. It had long ago stopped being a worthy backup weapon, as he only used it to cut food. But it was still a weapon designed to kill.

I’m just going to post his words without a spoiler now, since Zamanda plans to offer her translation services.

Responding to Bashiel’s questions, Belor says, “I was only a child when I was taken, though I was old enough to remember most of it. The slavers entered my quah’s territory in the Cinderlands. They raided our village and carried away many of our young including myself. Over the years, we were sold off to different masters or died in captivity. I… I haven’t seen any of the others in many years. My former master decided he wanted to trade me in for a younger slave. That’s how I ended up at the auction.

“As for slavers in general… I am ignorant of most of their ways. They are careful to avoid discussing the trade in the presence of their slaves. I do know that auctions are relatively rare in Kaer Maga. This is only the second time I’ve been sold here, with many years in between. I think some in the city look down on the trade, though I haven’t had the pleasure of personally meeting any till now.”

At Zamanda’s questions, Belor says, “I do not think so. They received payment for me, so they should be satisfied. I do not bear the collar any longer, so they also cannot claim I ran away. My tribe is the Skoan-Quah. They are not as fearsome as some of the others, which made us easy targets for the slavers. I do not know if any of them will recognize me, but they will not be able to deny that I am Shoanti. Though they were distrustful of tshamek when last I was with them, I believe they will grant you an audience if I am with you.

“I do not know of one named Thousand Bones, but that does not mean he isn’t among my quah. Shoanti names change from time to time as we age and accomplish certain things. A name like that likely signifies he is very old. It is certainly an appropriate name for a member of our tribe, for we are the keepers of the dead for all the quahs.”

After Kalem hands him the dagger, he says, “Thank you. I have no intention of being a slave again.”

Bashiel doesn’t see anything amiss in the inn. There are only a couple other patrons in the common area along with the barkeeper and barmaid. It’s hard to say what’s happening outside the inn’s thick walls.

I assume this is an inn in the Highside Stacks? Did you go to one of the ones the street urchin suggested, or a random one?

Yep, makes sense to avoid the two inns he decided to invite us to then subsequently warn us about. I'm happy with a random inn in the richer part of town.

Bashiel grins in appreciation for Zamanda's mastery of the Shoanti tongue. "And here I thought we'd be stuck with charades for a while."

To Belor, Bashiel responds "A difficult life. But I hope this will mark a turning point for you, regardless of whether you decide to return to the Skoan-Quah or go elsewhere." He nods "Though you were taken as a child, I expect you know a lot about the traditions of the Skoan-Quah. If they would be distrustful of us, I'd like to either offer something or do something for them to prove our good intentions. Is there something traditional we might bring or do?"

At Bashiel’s question, Belor says, “The Skoan-Quah have never been ones to hoard up earthly treasures. We guard the dead, after all, and so we know that such things are temporary. In truth, the Skoan-Quah I remember were always the most open to dealing with tshamek, though I’m sure the raid where I was taken damaged that tendency. Your best plan is to treat them with respect. Let them see you are not like the slavers, that you are friends. Do that and it will likely only be the other quahs you have to worry about.”

Shortly after Belor finishes answering Bashiel’s question, there’s a commotion at the entrance to the inn as four bearded, muscular men enter the common room from outside. The two other patrons make themselves scarce, retreating to the second floor. The barkeeper and barmaid withdraw into the kitchen. Only yourselves, Belor, and the four men remain.

The four men are the same ones who bid on Belor before and the Shoanti man seems to recognize them judging by the distressed look on his face. Three of the men fan out and soon the group is surrounded on four sides.

The man who didn’t move and is standing near the door casually rests his hand on his sword hilt. His eyes narrow as he sees Belor’s bare neck.

Addressing the group, he says, “You wouldn’t mind explaining what’s going on here, would you? Is this some elaborate ploy to make the man think he’s free? Some cruel joke? I strongly suggest giving a straight answer.”

The man's name is Belor of the Skoan-Quah, and he *is* free. We are talking with him and plan to return him to his people. If you come here planning to enslave him again, put that thought out of your minds, and we give you leave to depart with no violence. We wish no trouble, but I promise you that if you attempt to take this man against his will, we will defend him to the death.

Malen took out his insignia of Pharasma once the group had reached the Inn and removed the former slave's collar, sighing in relief. The priest had disguised his affiliations at other times to avoid persecution, but it never made such a thing any easier. He whispered a prayer to the Lady of Graves, hoping she understood his intent.

He sat silently and listened to the exchange between Zamanda and Belor intently, offering little that his clever companions hadn't already come up with. If these Skoan-Quah were the keepers of their peoples' dead, the cleric thought he could form a bond with them over such work, as long as he was respectful as the Shoanti man had suggested.

When the would-be owners of Belor muscle their way into the Inn, Malen noted that the other occupants made themselves scarce. These were either men of power, or men of violence. He stood, maintaining a neutral expression as the aasimar replied. The priest couldn't imagine why the men would be so upset at their freeing a slave. Maybe they had good intentions and had been wanting to free the Shoanti themselves? Surely not...

The speaker for the men raises an eyebrow at Zamanda’s words. He almost seems to believe her.

As Kalem, Ilsa, and Bashiel rise to their feet, the speaker glances at the trio before saying, “A less disciplined man would likely take your provocations as a prelude to violence. Your brashness could prove fatal someday. I suggest you sit down unless you want a fight.”

Bashiel spots longswords on each of the men and longbows on two of them.

The man does his best to ignore Ilsa’s words, though he certainly seems unnerved by them. But he doesn’t back down. Instead, he nods to one of his companions.

The other man takes a step forward and begins speaking in Shoanti to Belor (which Zamanda is able to translate).

“We are Freemen from the Bottoms. Are these people holding you prisoner? You need only say so and we will see to it that you are freed.”

Belor’s eyes widen once again. He seems thoroughly overwhelmed by everything that’s taken place over the last couple hours. He replies to the other man in Shoanti, “These people freed me. If their intentions are ignoble, I have seen no indication of such. They have said they intend to come with me to return to my people, which is what I desire. They provided these clothes and this weapon. They have fed me. I have no reason to believe they have lied to me.”

The Shoanti-speaking bearded man relays what Belor said to the first speaker who eyes each of you for a moment before saying, “So I’m told you have no ill-will towards this man. I have seen convincing bluffs before. Even slavers know to feed and clothe their captives lest their investments go to waste. Why should I believe you won’t put a collar back on him as soon as you leave the city?”

The man’s face contorts as he says the word ‘slavers.’ It seems to leave a bad taste in his mouth.

DC 20 Knowledge (local):

The Freemen safeguard the residents of the Bottoms (a district in Kaer Maga) from exploitation. They are firm believers in democracy and are generally good-natured. Freemen see owning another human being as the greatest of crimes, punishable by death. Freemen have been known to purchase slaves at auctions in order to emancipate people.

Zamanda translates the Shoanti conversation for her friends, and then responds to the first speaker

Why in the world would I take off his collar in the first place if I just meant to put it back on? Belor is free to leave if he wants to, and we have told him that, and you yourselves have asked him. What other proof do you want? It definitely won't be us going with you, because you're just as likely to have an ulterior motive as we are, and Belor goes where he chooses. No one will ever force him to do anything again.

Additionally, I find it a little grating that you come in here, interrupting our meal and a lawful place of business demanding answers from us when it was you men that were buying up all the slaves in the first place, and caused me to spend more than double what it should have cost to free this man. If anyone is supporting the slavers by driving their profits up, that sounds like you lot. Perhaps you had better explain yourselves before accusing me and my friends of imaginary evil intentions, which I think if you look closely you will note that we are not evil... not one of us.

She smiles her beatific, innocent smile, clearly showing her Aasimar heritage.

The "Innocent" racial trait only works mechanically on bluffs, but I figured that it would also work just story-wise to show what manner of being she is.

Then she stops and grumbles under her breath, but with no attempt to hide what she's saying

You really want to chase after someone at that auction, why not the freaking VAMPIRE?

She then summarizes the conversation for Belor in Shoanti, but trying to stave off his worry, she softens it a little, trying to hide her frustration a little more, and makes it seem a little ridiculous that people are ready to go to war fighting over who gets to free him.

Malen chuckled as the situation played out, shaking his head as he sat back down and started to dine once more. He glanced over at Belor, shrugging haplessly as the showdown continued. The priest appreciated the men's insistence on the matter, and of course they didn't know the group, but it was comical how far off the mark they seemed to be. The cleric hoped the aasimar's lovely smile would placate them, because it was likely to go easier for the foursome than what Bashiel, Kalem, and Ilsa had in store.

The first speaker shakes his head at Kalem’s words. “I don’t have to justify myself to you. But if it will calm the situation - the other slaves were escorted to the Bottoms where their collars were removed. They’re probably being given a choice right about now - live in the Bottoms where they’ll be given a job, or set out on their own, in which case they’re given two weeks worth of rations and sent on their way.

“As much as I hate to discuss it, slaves can often have different responses to freedom. They could just as easily have hurt our cause as helped it had we brought them with us. Much like Belor here seems to be, they would likely still be in shock from being freed.”

At Zamanda’s words, the man’s expression darkens. He almost seems ashamed as he says, “Of course we prefer to free people through other means, but sometimes purchasing them is the only way to ensure their freedom. Kaer Maga’s perpetual anarchy risks falling into complete chaos if certain unspoken rules are not followed. More lives would be lost if such chaos came about.”

He straightens a bit and his expression grows fierce as he says, “And as for paying more than double, that is a small price to pay for the freedom of a man. After all, what is someone’s life worth? A bit of extra gold is nothing in comparison.”

Meanwhile, Belor listens mostly in silence. He doesn’t seem to understand much of what is being said, so he seems grateful when Zamanda summarizes the conversation.

As Malen sits down again, three of the four men, including the speaker, seem to relax a bit.

Speaking again, the group’s apparent leader says, “It seems at least one of your companions knows how not to be provocative.”

He gestures to one of the other men who throws a bag onto the table. The clinking of many coins is audible as the bag lands.

The leader explains, “It seems we misjudged the situation. Better that our coins go to you than to the slavers. All I ask is that you let two of my men escort you till you’re out of the city. It’s obvious that you’re not familiar with Kaer Maga, which could get you killed if you’re not careful. You should also feel free to stay in the Bottoms if you wish, though I will understand if you choose not to. Those who would free their brethren stay at no charge.”

If you look into the bag, you’ll find 1200 gp plus an extra 100 gp which the man explains are for Belor.

He waves and one of the other three men makes his way towards the entrance to the door.

Speaking once more, the leader says, “The two of us will take our leave... assuming our arrangement is agreeable to you?”

Zamanda knows that they don't need bodyguards, but if they are paying for the privilege...

Agreed.

She then divides the gold 6 ways, giving 200 gold to everyone including Belor, and giving the extra hundred included for him to him as well.

Free money for the privilege of having bodyguards. Gotta love this town.

She explains to Belor that those people were a group fighting against slavery, and are paying to provide him with bodyguards until they leave town.

They aren't buying him back from me or taking the credit for his freedom, Kalem. No matter how they *meant* this money, what is happening is that they are paying us for the privilege of allowing them to follow us around and listen to our conversations. Hopefully they will also protect Belor if we get into a fight.

[CAMPAIGN COMPLETE: BECAME KALEM LIGHTSWORN]

”And what I’m saying is that they’re probably paying this money so they can hit us in an ambush and take the money back. They’re story makes no sense. They’ve paid an exorbitant amount of gold at the auction, which lines the pockets of slavers and makes slavery that much more profitable. If they were against the practice then why make the market that much more lucrative? And where did they get all the gold anyways? Anyone would go broke in a month spending as they do. It is much more likely that they paid this gold just to get in our midst. They’ll likely murder us, and take back their gold and all of ours once they can.” Kalem said, clearly letting cynicism (or paranoia) take over.

Hope everyone had a good thanksgiving!

"As paranoid as it sounds, Kalem is right. They could follow us as much as they wanted without giving us any gold. And the amount they gave us is astronomical, especially for a scrappy group trying to free some slaves."

"I'm not sure if their goal is to lull us into a false sense of security, or if its something more complicated, but it definitely seems strange. Add that to the way the clientele responded when they arrived..." Bashiel shrugs uncomfortably. "I'm not any good at reading people, so I don't have a sense if they were lying about anything. But I would have guessed they were an established local group of thugs or a thieves guild, not an abolitionist group."

"Maybe we shouldn't worry too much. If they have ill intentions for us, or for Belor, we'll just have to deal with them. And before long we'll be out of the city anyway."

Psst. Sense Motive is your friend. :)

No worries, Ilsa.

Zamanda, one of the Freemen that stayed behind is the one that speaks Shoanti, yes.

The leader and one of the other men take their leave after giving you the money. The two that remain keep their distance, but are definitely paying close attention to you.

Belor takes the money gratefully, still apparently in awe of what has transpired. The sum is likely more than he’s ever seen at one time.

The Shoanti shakes his head when Zamanda asks if he’s still hungry. As for shopping, he says, “I wouldn’t know the first thing about prices or what to get, but I suppose having a second pair of clothes would be a good idea. I could use a backpack and a canteen as well.”

A few minutes after the two Freemen leave, the barkeeper reemerges from the kitchen. He gives you all a nervous smile, but seems happy enough to offer rooms if you want them. This is a relatively plain part of town, so it’s 1 sp per person per night, not including board. Two people per room.

Malen sat and continued to eat as the conversation seemed to calm down, the four men explaining their group's cause and its reason for participating in the slave auction.
