The Wicked GM |
My bad--I forgot about the uniform. Since it really wasn't mentioned, we can assume that ya'll removed Grau's uniform while he was passed out and had Pobie clean it up. Grau could have woken up in pedestrian clothes. It's probably not the first time he's been robbed in his sleep :).
The Wicked GM |
I'm very sorry Cal! What terrible news. Take as much time as you need, and let us know if we can do anything for you.
The Wicked GM |
Is no problem, I figured you were only trying to be suave. Since I'm botting Cal, I'm going to take a backseat/support role, and let you guys lead the way. I think we know where this is going, anyway ;).
Sorry to hear about work. Settling in can be turbulent, but here's hoping things settle down once you're established.
The Wicked GM |
It was perfect. Moments like that make the game fun :).
Norelia "Li" |
My other question is whether the rogue talent, bleed attack may pertain to nonlethal damage? I was thinking that Li tries to do nonlethal damage but accidentally causes some internal hemorrhaging. Technically we only have to take Verik alive, right? If not, totally understand. Just thought I'd ask.
The Wicked GM |
The talent description doesn't address it, and your explanation is plausible, so let's say yes!
The Wicked GM |
Sorry guys, very busy couple of days (and combat posts take a while). My next post will come this weekend!
The Wicked GM |
Yes it is, thanks! I decided to take the evening off. Have at it!
The Wicked GM |
So I know several of us have prior experience with this AP. Has anyone played past the All The World's Meat mission?
The Wicked GM |
I'm working on a post I'll put up later tonight, in case Yazi gets a chance to post before then. Not a big deal, just itching to push forward to "new" content for everyone :).
The Wicked GM |
Oh? I'm not seeing it. I see your round 1 post using evil eye, but not an action for round 2. Am I just not seeing it?
The Wicked GM |
We are in round 2.
The Wicked GM |
I'll post again this afternoon, prepared to bot Cal, Garvid, and Yazi if they aren't able to do so by then.
The Wicked GM |
It's stated at the end of my posts. e.g. "Top of round 3, everyone is up!".
Because PCs won initiative, my posts and NPC actions represent the second half of each round. Additionally, when we are in combat you and I will "take turns" posting our actions. Thus, after I post a round, you can expect that your actions are needed and it's your turn to post.
For instance, My last post went up Sunday night, meaning I'm looking for a response from you after that one. Ask yourself, "Have I posted since the GM's last post?". You can see that only Li and Mouse have posted turns since my last turn.
Does this make sense?
The Wicked GM |
Great! I will try to remember to bold that line from now on so it's easier to see.
FYI our wifi is down right now so I won't be able to post until it's back.
The Wicked GM |
Yes I'm enjoying the visuals of the polearm duel. It's like something from a Mel Brooks movie.
I'll try to post after work tonight but may not get to it until tomorrow.
The Wicked GM |
Alright, I have a serious question.
Cal has been gone for two weeks. I was going to wait another week to contact him, but I've had a friend from these boards ask to join our game. Given that we are currently down to four active players, I have agreed to seek your approval to bring him on board. Whatever we decide, Calcedon will always have a spot to return to when and if he chooses. And I hope he does return. His contribution to our game has just been too valuable.
In the meantime, the player who has requested to join is Fabian, someone who Mouse and Li know from other games. He has quite a lot experience as both a GM and player on the boards, and I can certainly vouch for his contributions.
But it's not up to me.
I'm asking for a vote to bring him on, and I'm looking for unanimous approval. If you all agree, then I'll invite him into the discussion to start hashing out a character.
So what's it to be?
Fabian Benavente |
Hello and thanks for the vote of confidence.
I did play parts of the first and second book of this AP, different PCs but I will try my hardest to keep player and character knowledge separate.
Looking at your line up, I was thinking of an alchemist/chirurgeon.
APPEARANCE
Pietro is in his late 20s but his clean-shaven, boyish face makes people he's barely out of his teens. He is of average height and sleight of build although his loose clothing hide some stringy muscle. He is dressed in brown pants and a loose-fitting shirt on his torso. When adventuring, he wears his pliable armor. A lone dagger on his belt is the only visible weapon.
BACKSTORY
Dr.Bartori was raised in the good life. The second born of the Bartori family, one of the five most powerful aristocratic families in Korvosa. The Bartori’s claimed to be one of the Great Houses in the city. Pietro went to the best schools, had the best tutors, and attended the best parties. But life had lost its taste after a few years and the young man became depressed and morose.
During the day, he ran a high end clinic for the rich and elite of Korvosa. He worked as a doctor and his clientele consisted of other aristocrats. He charged them exorbitant prices and told them how young and beautiful they were.
At night, he donned an elaborate disguise and wondered the poorer parts of town and provided his services free of charge. He was well-known as Dr. Pietro in the community of Trail’s End where he tended to the sick and also gave some of the gold he charged his wealthier clients. In fact, he was somewhat of a celebrity in the community and enjoyed the protection of the local thugs. His working with the sick and downtrodden have given him strong resistances to diseases (trait).
It was in one of these outings that Pietro came to know Lamm and how he exploited children, a particular soft spot for the Dr.
PERSONALITY
Dr. Bartori likes to keep his distance and is somewhat immune to flattery since he’s heard it all in the circles that he moves in. He comes from a privileged upbringing but has been turned off to the lifestyle due to hypocrisy among the privileged. He is currently guilt ridden because he knows that he makes money from the ’rich and famous’; his personal justification is that the money allows him to help the poor.
Although the Dr. certainly is aware of magic and uses it in his profession, he is also aware that a good doctor can do much to heal with the proper training and conviction; he firmly believes in scientific training and the healer’s skill (trait).
The doctor is a consummate scholar and loves researching the medical field in his spare time.
His family and upper-class friends do not know of his ’side job’ so he keeps up his facade when in the presence of the well-to-do.
(Note: Only the start since I am sure the character will take a personality of his own once I start playing.)
-----------
The Dr. will provide excellent ranged attack options (both fire and acid) with 8 bombs (1d6+4) per day. Once those are used up, he will resort to throwing alchemical fire, acid, and/or holy water depending on the situation (please note that these do extra damage when thrown by a skilled alchemist).
He will provide excellent healing (high heal and profession-doctor checks) in addition to having access to cure spells (usable on anyone).
His arcane support is very good considering his known ’spell’ list and bearing in mind the fact that he doesn’t have to prepare his extracts ahead of time but can do so at a moment’s notice (only takes 1 minute per extract) depending on what is needed at the time. In fact, the Dr. Will leave one (1) 1st level ’open slots’.
With regards to skills, he has high bonuses for knowledge arcana, k.nature, heal, spellcraft, perception, heal, and use magic device and good bonuses for appraise.
----------------
However, I'm not dead-set on this PC and am willing to listen to the group's ideas. Do you think this is a good fit? Would you like something different?
Once the PC is more or less defined, then we need to figure out how he comes together with the group. As you probably guessed, fluff and story are very important to me.
Well, that's it for now.
Thanks again.
Thoughts?
The Wicked GM |
I think this is a very wise choice as the group is currently lacking in the magical support department. Thematically, Pietro fits very well! We are level two. As to gold, I'm open to suggestions here, but i would propose liquidating all current loot, then determining total wealth received and assign your starting wealth near that point. Thoughts?

Ok then; it's settled. Pietro will also provide ranged support and also some healing (everyone can use extra healing).
As for money, just let me know and I'll adjust.
Crunch question: As stated, I was thinking of making him an alchemist/chirurgeon so he won't be overly optimized (he won't be a slouch either). Are the other PCs optimized?
Calcedon |
Hey, wandered on today. Things are still tough for me, but one needs to move forward eventually even if you don't feel like it. My posting might still be spotty for a while, but I'll try to keep things going as best I can.
As for Fabian, I don't mind the addition, as we lost one already to the ether. Chirugeon is a great fit, when I read a new player, I thought alchemist or wizard would be great. Considering his story, a White Mage arcanist would also be appropriate. Having his knowledge will also be useful, as we're a little light in that department, and heavy in the melee department. Also, ranged combat with bombs isn't bad either.
Cal is fairly optimized as a Diplomancer and violin player. Since he and the Dr probably revolved around the same areas, you can use Cal as a bridge to bring him into the group. You may have even treated Cal for the loss of his fingers, possibly some other odd injuries as well. Since Cal is young and Pietro is older, it's quite possible he was their family doctor as well and most of his injuries were in the past six to seven years.
The Wicked GM |
Cal, glad to hear from you! I'm happy to have you back in any capacity, spotty or otherwise.
I would say the party is fairly optimized. We're built on a 25 point buy. You can see my profile for further details.
Re fluff, I like the idea that Pietro worked for the Fordyce family. Depending on his age and term of service with them, Pietro might be privy to information about a certain pregnancy and a certain blonde, roguish baby.
Re money, I'd like Cal, Garvid, Li, Mouse, and Yazi to check the loot spreadsheet and claim anything you don't want to sell. Note it already includes the promised bounty from Cressida (that you haven't technically collected yet). I want to cash this out ASAP so you can calculate your "Total Wealth Received" for me. Pietro will be using something close to that number to build his character. Please do so in the next 24 hours if you can.
Fabian, it looks like we're at about (Max starting wealth for your class) + (2,000). Use this as a starting number to build your crunch, and I'll give you the specific number later.
Questions?
Fabian Benavente |
Ok, I'll finalize my crunch later today and let you take a look at it.
As far as knowledge, Pietro is very 'bookish' so even though they may not be class skills, he can certainly lend a hand with knowledge skills (high INT). Anything in particular besides arcana and nature that you all want?
While keeping him a chirurgeon (fluff reasons), I'll try to optimize some. Perhaps you can all take a look once I posted his crunch and give me some ideas.
Working for the Forsythe family is fine. Pietro is still fairly young (late 20s) but a gifted physician so he should be fairly well known in Korvosa (if that's OK GM).
So where is the party now? How soon can we 'meet'?
Yaziyah Tanja |
Yazi already has nature (+6), planes (+7) and religion (+9) as knowledge skills, I think we're a bit low on arcana knowledge.
The party is currently at the Fordyce estate, cooling their heels after arresting a couple of deserters from the Korvosa City Guard. A bunch of us are injured, which would be an excellent pretext for a chirurgeon to show up. Yazi has done what she could with Heal checks, but she's mainly a midwife so her efficiency is limited (she's also out of CLW spells for the day). I can imagine that Calcedon, as a good host, would not let his guests linger while injured, so he would call for a trusted physician to see to their wounds.
I'm done with the loot sheet, I only want the masterwork spear.

Well, K.arcana is a class skill so I'll definitely have that. I'll look at what you have so we don't overlap and go from there.
Your idea for introducing Pietro sounds very good actually.
Let's wait for others (GM) to chime in and we'll go from there.
The Wicked GM |
Optimization is fine, but I encourage everyone to build the character they envision, so don't stress over it.
FYI to balance for six players and a high point buy I tend to buff the enemies (a necessary conversion coming from 3.5, anyway), so expect higher ACs and more hit points than you might normally see at our level.
Also please read my profile and look to prior combats to see how I do things.
Being a celebrity in Korvosa is fine. Cal, Garvid, and even Yazi are pretty well known, too.
We have just finished Welcome to the Guard, having infiltrated the butcher shop and extracted Verik Vancaskerkin. We are about to report back to Cressida.
Good stuff! I'll post later this afternoon.
Marial "Mouse" Redfist |
I'll check out the list and get posted a little bit later - busy night last night, dentist's for a mouthful of fillings this morning.
If I don't come back, remember me fondly. When it comes to high-pitched noises and the sensation of grinding against my teeth, I can't even. Just...ugh.
