I agree Clebsch. It's hard to keep a campaign going when there are only two or three active players. I'm fine with you recruiting players you know. It always seems to work out for the best when that happens.

I, too, absolutely adore Franti and his player. I'm afraid we don't have much choice, especially since it's better to introduce someone new earlier in the game.
I trust your judgement, GM, and I will support whatever decision you go with.

I agree with all the above. He's awesome and I hope he's ok but I'm perfectly willing to go with your choices.

I'm going to be out of town for a few days on a camping trip with only cell phone posting possible, so I probably won't post anything for a few days. Role play intra-character reactions to the developments and we'll assume the party withdraws in an orderly way, taking whatever prisoners they choose to return for justice/redemption, as well as the valuables the party wants to preserve. The leadership of the crusaders will be grateful for your salvaging the property of Terendelev, particularly the young one. Karas will be considered the owner of anything brought back and he can distribute it as he wishes.
I want to add a few magic items to the stuff found in the last room, but I won't have those ready until the weekend. I'd like to let people look for items they want to keep or sell/buy but then we'll move on to the next section. There were a few other safe houses to check out, but we can assume the leadership can send others to check on that as they will want to explore an important possible way of saving the city and your party will be getting the green light to attempt it. This will lead to the boss battle and conclusion of the book.

Hiya, folks. I'm Avelina's friend and I'd be interested in helping fill in. I've tried to play Wrath several times now but the campaign always falls apart before hitting level 2.
I have no issues playing a rogue or a bard. I'll toss together a concept and post once I have something so you can decide if I'll be a good fit!

Raine a'Thiel |
As I said, I have no problem with rogues or bards, but as I was browsing classes, this concept jumped out at me. If you'd prefer something closer to Franzi's jester style character, I can start with something more classically trickster, but, here's my notion anyway:
Submitting Raine a'Thiel, a human (urban) ranger. The basic concept is a young Kenebran woman whose father's over-protectiveness meant that she was never really allowed to go wage war against the demons... but of course, the war has come to Kenabres, and there's no longer any 'home' to stay safe at.
At the moment no particular plans to multi-class or prestige class, but I don't rule it out. Normal human, no alt traits/etc.

Now the fun stuff!
In the Fourth Crusade, the family was especially hard hit. Melara a'Thiel was lost on the front lines, as were her two oldest children, Ryen and Rodien. Melara's husband Artien was badly injured in the same demonic strike that slew his wife-- a leg withered to ash by demonic fire, an eye destroyed. But the true defeat of his spirit came when, while recovering in the temples, he was told of the death of both his sons. All that was left to him was the youngest child: Raine, only a girl of eight at the time.
Artien swore that his daughter would not perish the same way as the rest of his family. He determined that she would live a safe life behind Kenabres's walls, and forbade her joining the Crusades. As Raine grew older, she had different ideas... but found her every attempt to join gently but firmly blocked by sergeants and lieutenants who knew her father, and who agreed, as a kindness to the aging cripple, to keep his daughter out of the field.
Raine chafed under this restriction for years, bearing it with bitter resignation. She wished to carry on the family's honor, not spend her days serving as a nurse to her crippled and emotionally-broken father. She loves him dearly, but it galled her spirit to know that while she was whole of body and as willing to fight as any, she was consigned to a dull and valorless life, while others in worse shape than she rode out to patrol the Worldwound's edges. But she was not willing to outright defy her heartbroken father's wishes. Confined to Kenabres, she became an expert on it: on every back alley, each hidden stair that led to the rampart walls, the bars filled with carousing mercenaries and the inns to which would-be Crusaders could be guided, for a bit of coin. She haunted the temple of Iomedae as much as she could, less out of a pious faith than for the chance to at least practice martial drills, for the Iomedaeans know that even if one is to stay behind a wall it does not mean one is fully safe. Raine loves Kenabres, simply and fiercely: she knows the city like an old friend, and has favorite buildings as others have favorite companions.
And she was devastated when it fell.
Raine's first priority when the wardstones fell was not to fight with demons in the streets, but to get her crippled father to safety. Perhaps if that had not been her first concern, her life might have gone very differently-- perhaps she might have been among the handful of travelers who Terendelev protected as they fell into the earth. But instead, Raine hauled her father into one of the hiding places she knew, an old cellar, and guarded him during the initial demonic rampage, weeping with her helplessness as Kenabres fell.
In the time since, Raine has remained in her city: no longer a safe fortress, but occupied territory. The front line has come to her, despite her father's wishes. Raine's knowledge of the city has served her well as she has picked her way through old tunnels and collapsed buildings, scavenging food, weapons, and supplies, and carefully avoiding the red eyes of demonic occupiers. Her father still lives-- more broken than ever by the city's collapse, raving to himself with only occasional moments of lucidity. Raine struggles to keep him safe and hidden, as well as herself. But her other goal is vengeance.
She has returned once to her family's old home, a fraught and perilous mission, but one that rewarded her with two old family heirlooms: the bow and quiver of arrows her mother had taken into battle, and a pair of enchanted goggles worn by one of her brothers. Raine strikes down demons when she can: from a distance, from the shadows, picking off lone targets with her arrows before melting into the city's rubble once more. The arrows are red-fletched: it is not the same as riding under the banner of the red hawk on an open field, but it is what Raine can do. For as long as there are demons, there will be an a'Thiel to fight them... or so Raine swears.
I'm making guesstimations on the current state of Kenabres; they could be wildly off-base. If things need reworking, please let me know.
Her personality prior to the fall of Kenabres was a young woman who was both driven but also somewhat immature, with a penchant for sarcasm and occasional flippancy. She's gotten much more grim over the last few weeks, due to circumstances, but ideally she'll heal towards being a wiser version of her old self: optimistic, determined, a pithy quip when times are dark.
She'll be going for the Marshal path, most likely, unless as the GM you really want someone taking on the Trickster role.

GM: I've been reading through some of the gameplay thread to get a better idea of what's going in Kenabres-- still got catch up to do, but I'd say that Raine and her father would, if possible, be stuck in the demon-occupied part of the city-- Raine might be able to make it to crusader-held parts on her own, but it would mean having to leave her father, so she wouldn't willingly do that.

I'd be comfortable keeping an expanded group with one additional member if Franti returns. This group moves smoothly, one more person won't mess that up.
Karas, if you don't mind sharing the details (keep secret whatever you wish to keep secret of course):
What is Karas's blood relationship to Terendelev? Is he her adopted son? Is he descended from her distantly or closely, or does his silver dragon bloodline stem from another dragon in his lineage?
And where does the tiefling part come in? Is he half-human (with a bit of dragon), half-demon? Or more distant there as well?
Karas Argentus |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
So its actually less complicated that it seems.
He is distantly descended from Terendelev herself. Diluted enough to not make him a half dragon but not enough that he cant draw power from it as a bloodrager. This was also kind of amplified by a ritual in his background and campaign trait that is what left him branded with the mark of Baphomet.
The teifling comes in as the latent energies of the worldwound tainting his pregnant crusader mother (who carried the dragon bloodline) causig him to be born teifling of 2 human parents.
After he broke out of his imprisonment and into the guards prison proper. Terendelev found and reintegrated him to society. He looks at her like his mother since his real one was slain 60+ years ago when he was taken.
(His background in his profile actually details this from his own perspective if you want to read it :) )

I don't know if you've read Anarya's backstory in depth, but her lineage (and the source of her power) is mentioned in the Excerpts from The History and Future of Humanity on her profile. Her aasimar heritage, and particularly her Scion of Humanity trait, represent her divine connection to humanity itself rather than the blood of a celestial. I am really hoping she doesn't die before I get to explore that section of her story. I've got all kinds of ideas for how she'll progress once she (and the world) realizes her destiny.

Clebsch GM |
I've looked over the character of Raine a'Thiel and it looks good. One thing to consider, after the first book ends, there will little or no action back in Kenabres, so the community aspect will not do Raine a lot of good after that. The second book takes place in Drezen, another crusade city that it will be the job of the party to help retake from the demons. So I'd allow the community to extend to any crusader city, if that seems in line with the intent of the archetype. After the second book, however, things will go into demon held territory, other planes even, so that won't help then. Of course, by then, you'll have some mythic levels.
I would prefer to have all the mythic paths covered, ideally, but that isn't something I want to force on you. The book Mythic Adventures suggests that rangers will find useful and compatible abilities in the trickster path. Rangers are not mentioned in the marshal path, although that certainly doesn't prevent a ranger from choosing the path. Just look over the options available on the Trickster Path. If it's not for Raine, then be prepared to coordinate with the other person on the Marshal path, (currently, that would be Avelina, who is related to the queen), so you take advantage of different potentials in the Marshal path.
Another Iomedae follower is no problem, as there are obviously many amount crusaders. If you're of a mind, consider mixing things up a bit with one of the other prominent good deities represented by crusaders, such as Cayden Cailean, Desna, Saranrae, or Shelyn. Some others possibilities exist, such as Kurgess, Milani, and Chaldira Zuzaristan, as well as Empyreal Lords, such as Ragathiel, Arqueros, and Kelinahat. Again, I don't want to force it, but there are other options besides Iomedae.
Background looks good. It will be a simple matter to connect Raine to the other PCs when people are chosen for an important mission, where Raine's familiarity with the city will be an asset. If Franti has not resumed his character, he will have a reason to leave for the time being.
I haven't heard anything from the others I notified, and since your character looks good and you come well recommended, I have no problem having you join the campaign. Welcome and I appreciate your willingness to step in. Let me know if you have any other questions about the character.
For hit points, I'm allowing each level (after 1st) the player can roll his or her character's hit die but if the result is below the average +1 (same as in Pathfinder Society) that becomes the hit points for the level.
We are also using hero points, so I'll a lot a random number up to 4 at some point before you join the action.
GM Dien |
Wooo, thanks Clebsch! And everyone else for the warm welcomes.
Re: Kenabres/favored community:
Yeah, I'm aware that Kenabres is not likely to be the long-term site of further stuff; I don't terribly mind not getting much further mechanical use out of favored community. While I really loved the flavor/concept for that and it inspired a lot of Raine's backstory, the aspect of normal ranger that it replaces (favored terrain) is one that I rarely find valuable anyway, so to me, it was trading out one little-used mechanical class feature for another little-used mechanical class feature (but picking up trapfinding). In short, I'm not heartbroken to just run it straight as is, with the full knowledge that I won't be in Kenabres that much; but if you're being generous enough to do a generalized 'crusader city' thing, I'm not gonna turn that down. ;) (I will get an additional community at level 8 for what it's worth.)
I'll take another look at Trickster. I'm not outright opposed to the Trickster mythic path, honestly, but I like the trait 'child of the crusades' much better for Raine's story and background than I do the 'chance encounter' trait. If you'd allow my taking the Child of the Crusades trait, but going Trickster path, that could work?
Regarding gods... I have some notions there. I want to flesh out a little more of the IC reason why Raine knows her way around traps, locks, etc, beyond just 'the party needs a disabler', haha... so I'm going to do some minor background revisions, and that might lead to a religious tie-in. I'll do some mulling over there.
I just took the PFS method for Raine's HP as listed; if the rolling for HP is optional I'll stick with the HP of half-plus-one instead. Otherwise I'll roll some HP up!
Sounds great!

Raine a'Thiel |
Okay, Raine has undergone some minor rejiggering, both story wise and a little bit statwise (swapped out a trait, bought some gear, lowered CHA by 1 and boosted INT by 1, possibly other things I'm forgetting). The full version's on her profile, let me know if anything still needs tweaking!
GM: based on what is in the game so far mentioning Raine, it sounds like Raine is already aware of/working with the other defenders to some extent?
I was loosely envisioning that Raine could agree to help the others if they agree to help get her father to 'safe' territory, but I also don't want to bog down the game with 'NEW PLAYER WANTS YOU TO HAVE TO IMPROVISE STUFF AND RUN A SIDEQUEST' so I'm totally fine assuming that she's either already gotten her father to defender-held territory, or in handwaving that rescue bit, whatever will make the game go most smoothly.
And now, to post. Excited!
Clebsch GM |
Based on Raine's backstory, I assumed she would have found the crusaders holed up in the Defender's Heart. See posts starting at this one for the details of the Defender's Heart if you are not familiar with that from past games.
The PCs of this adventure have already helped a number of people holed up in various buildings in the city get to safety, so some other crusader's could have helped Raine with her father, particularly if he is a revered member of the crusaders past campaigns. You can imagine that as you wish. That would also make you privy to gossip and news and that would have exposed you to the general story of the people who emerged from over a week underground to rescue some people at the Blackwing library, saved a woman who was about to be sacrificed by some unhinged crusaders who thought it would create a holy weapon, helped escort Horgus Gwerm back to his manor to check on his possessions, saved Anevia Tirabade, wife of current leader of the resistance, Irabeth Tirabade from a half-orc seeking revenge for being captured by Irabeth before she got to Kenabres, helped Anevia reunite with her wife, and cleared out a safehouse of a cult of Baphomet called the Templars of the Ivory Labyrinth, recovering some documents.
I'm just now remembering that the party dealt with the Topaz Solutions shop, which I said Raine had done in the gameplay thread yesterday, so ignore that. But Raine could have taken care of the last known safehouse for the Crusaders while the PCs were doing what they are just getting back from doing, which they can explain.
There's nothing from the AP that you need to know about this last safehouse except it was called the Tower of Estrod, it was partly destroyed during the battle, and the leader of the cult, Faxon, was a tiefling witch who was down in the basement. After dispatching him, Raine would have found the said documents.
I think that should get things moving and allow Raine to integrate into the group.
Check the campaign tab for a list of house rules. Nothing major, but a few things that might help in certain melee situations.
Also, narration in the gameplay posts is in past tense. I think this reads better than present tense. No problem if you forget and write in present tense. I do that from time to time also.
You can get a sense of how I run things by looking at any posts and following a melee along. I roll certain things for the players to speed things up. Anything "Behind the screen" is for GM's eyes only, usually things like perception checks and knowledge checks, so you can look at them if you want after the situation has changed, just to see what the results were. Other rolls are for everyone to see but spoilered under "On the Table" to keep the posts tidy.
Raine a'Thiel |
Sure, I don't want to hold things up RPwise, so I'm fine assuming Raine's already partnered up with the Defender's Heart crusaders/gotten her father to safety, etc.
Yeah, I've read through the houserules and such. Good stuff!

An idea for raine's mythic path.
If you like marshal, consider dual pathing marshal and trickster?
I'll be doing the same with archmage and champion
dien RPG Superstar 2015 Top 16 |
It's not so much that I like marshal, it's that I like the Child of the Crusades trait. (Not for mechanics; for backstory)
So far I'm not really delighted with most of the trickster powers, as most of them involve sneak attack or bluffing or various other things that don't really fit Raine. She'd get the most mechanical use out of straight-Champion, probably. But honestly, mythic's a long way off, and maybe how I see Raine may change by then, or maybe I'll dual path Champion, or something. :P

Okay. So, at least for the time being, I am volunteering to take over managing the loot. We can't very well make purchases without knowing what we have, and I get the feeling we won't be wanting to head off to the BBEG without purchasing things
I looked over Franti's sheet and the gameplay thread, and I've gotten all the items accounted for, I believe. I'm currently working on getting everything priced out. I also need to look over to see how much money we should each have from our adventures before the point at which he stopped tracking.
@GM Unless I missed something, I have not seen any spellcraft/appraise data for the items in this post
Clebsch GM |
While in the Defender's Heart, lots of people can help with the spellcraft/appraise, so if you prefer, just assume you know what the items are and what they're worth. If the value of any item is unstated, I'll provide it. From the loot spreadsheet, it looks as if most everything is identified and priced, so let me know what, if anything, still needs to be provided.
When you know what you want, just post in the discussion thread the item and then roll [dice=1-75 available, 76-100 not]1d100[_dice], provided the item has a cost of between 100 and 2500gp.

Also, sorry I haven't posted the number yet. Today has been really crazy. My wife-to-be and I are trying to find a place in San Francisco for the fall (when I start grad school), and it's being a giant pain. I'm in need of a break, so I'll get back to work on this stuff now

Here's an updated loot tracker with the values of all the items we've gotten up to now.
Please look through and see if there is anything you would like to keep.
I'm holding the handy haversack at the moment, but I would recommend giving it to whoever has the most consumables amongst the casters.
I recommend selling the bracers of armor, as we have plenty of access to mage armor. The rings of protection should prioritize the frontliners, if they don't have any.
The masterwork half plate would be an armor upgrade for Ellena, but otherwise we could probably sell all the mundane weapons and armor.
As far as selling the poisons and drugs, since I don't imagine any of us are that keen on selling them to be used, perhaps we could sell them to temple healers who are looking to use them as materials for creating antidotes?

It's been a difficult week for me with a lot of ups and downs, so I struggled to get much of a post in. Things are in a good place now though! I had some pretty significant conversations with my family about the stuff I'm going through. They're still struggling to understand but they'll come around. I'm finally taking a big step towards something very important for me. :)

I'm glad to hear things a progressing for you! Educating parents can definitely be an arduous process.

If we sell everything I've marked for sale, each of us (minus Raine) will get 2287.35 gp. We also currently have 6 unclaimed Cure Light Wounds potions, so I'm gonna say we just give one to each of us.
I couldn't find any pricing data for Waters of the Whispering River (one of the drugs/poisons), since it's apparently from a module.

First off, congrats Anarya. Hope things go well for you!
Second, thanks Avelina for your hard work on the list. Hope you find an awesome place!
I wrote Ellena down for the masterwork half plate, one of the rings of protection +1, the +4 composite longbow and the 20'cold iron arrows. I assume Karas and I are the only two that can use that bow and if he would like it instead, I'm fine with him taking it. I didn't see a reason for one of us to not have it though.
