Chronicles of the Silver Rose Company

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This campaign is my attempt to play a canonical Planescape campaign using the updated Pathfinder ruleset. The game actually predates the release of Pathfinder, but we have managed to update as we have needed.

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

"Sorry! SORRY!" Justin shouts as the last of the spells' flames play over the room.

"Thank the Powers for small favors!

"HOLY WATER! Bomb them with Holy Water! If they get on you, DRINK IT!"

With precise timing, Hamar leaps above the chittering swarm as Justin unleashes his flames. They pass underneath this boots, and he lands on the roasted shells a moment later, untouched

Memnon retrieves Justin’s holy water from his pack. He hovers over the swarm and drops it. The vial smashes and a small section of the swarm sizzles as the blessed fluid splashes over them

HW: 2d4 ⇒ (1, 2) = 3

Manhayth unclips a vial from his belt and tosses it into the swarm as well. Then he leaps to the ladder and climbs up as high as he can.

“Everyone! They can’t fly and the ladder is several feet above the floor! Anyone on the floor get on the ladder! Throw whatever you can at them, but weapons will be useless!”

HW: 2d4 ⇒ (3, 3) = 6

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

Justin floats back up towards the ceiling a few feet, (Careful to keep an eye on the swarm and make sure none of it is climbing the walls!)

"Fire is considered 'purifying', right Mel? At least according to Ekuur. Everyone get out and I'll fireball the room into cinders if I have to!"

How much of the swarm (that came out of the wall at least, there could always be another one!) still seems to be moving? :)

female human wight fighter (armor master) 8 / furious guardian 3

Momentarily surprised by the swarm of beetles avoiding her entirely, Alessia recovers her poise and begins savagely lashing out with her shield, trying to smash as many of the insects as possible.

female Tiefling 13th level Duskblade

Karrin will cast swift flight to get out of the hole

Bribes always welcome

Justin notes that the swarm is indeed able to climb. Several streamers of the horrid bugs snake up the sandstone sides of the chamber

Blayze looks down the shaft and sees little but dancing shadows and hearing horrible screaming. Suddenly their guide Manhayth appears on the ladder, climbing and throwing something beneath him.

Karrin rockets past Manhayth and up the shaft, surprising Blayze as she rockets out, snapping her head back with the speed of her journey

Alessia’s shield crunches bugs, but many more pour out of the statuary mural’s mouths

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

"Oh, fertheluvuv,.... SHARDS AND SHELLS!" Justin curses as he sees the swarm start to climb the walls.

Justin shouts, "Hamar, Alessia, get out! Climb! We'll have to cleanse it with fire AND Holy Water!"

The wizard dives and grabs Mel under his armored shoulders.
"HAng on tight buddy! Your goin' for a ride!"

Justin prays his grip holds (And Mel has enough strength to hold on himself!) And rises up the center of the shaft as fast as he can and not bump his or Mel's head against the wall or ladder rungs.

As he flies upwards he continues shouting,
"If you have Holy water, THROW IT AT THE BUGS! Watch out for Alessia!"

So, shouting (Free actions) grab Mel, (Attack?) :) FLy out = MOve action?

Blayze Female Aasimar Gunslinger (Mysterious Stranger) 2/ Paladin (Holy Gun/Divine Hunter) 9

Standing at the edge and looking down at the swarming horror, Blayze sets herself as her companions flee up the hole. "Everyone out as fast as you can, and Alessia, make sure to get at least 30ft clear of me when you get out! I'll hold them back." she shouts, her eyes beginning to glow with an almost painfully bright light.

I didn’t see Merle hadn’t gone rd 1 yet. I assume since she’s up top that she’s just going to hold an action for now. Merle I can retcon if you had something in mind

Mel grabs at the ladder and extricates himself from the swarm. He wearily climbs up, armor smoking and skin covered in burns and weeping bug bites

Since Mel is nauseated, there isn’t much else he can do but take a move action. He’ll climb to safety, no need to Superman him, Justin

Manhayth swarms up the ladder, getting to the top and proceeding to rustle for another holy water

I’ll hold on the Scarab’s actions for now until the folks farther up the initiative post up.

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

Justin, seeing Mel is making his way up the ladder safely (if shakily) nods and flies himself up and out of the hole.(He hadn't been looking forward to dragging the heavily armored cleric out of the hole, but he wasn't gonna leave him there either!) He hovers above the entryway as the others make their way out.

He sees Blayze preparing herself, and grins.

"Mel! You OK? Anything we can do to help?" The wizard asks as the Cleric heaves himself up the ladder, slowly.

"MAN that is a lot of armor. Never understood how Murphy and Martin deal with it." He mutters to himself.

The wizard pulls a bit of mystic flotsam from a pocket, and holds it at the ready along with his 'Blasting Rod'.

"As soon as everyone is safely away from the bottom, Merle and I can 'purify' the heck out of the room with fireballs! Blayze, wait til the rest of the swarm (if any) start coming OUT of the shaft. Make sure to get as many as you can!"

>Updated Map<

Mel is on the ladder, Justin is still flying. Just Alessia and Hamar in the room

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

"Help him up!" Justin calls, eyes moving back and forth, suspecting every flicker of shadow to be the first beetle of the swarm.

Round 2

Hamar runs at the ladder, sheathing his currently useless blades, and climbs as fast as he can.

Though still consumed with fury, Alessia becomes dimly aware that she is the only one left in the small chamber. Knowing what is likely to follow, she redirects her energy from smashing the beetles around her to attempting to smash down the door in the wall opposite the ladder.

Do I need to roll for this? If so, what kind of roll?

Alessia lets out an unearthly shriek and hammers herself against the stone door. There is an audible *THUD* as she hits, and a plume of dust surrounds her.

Meanwhile, the scarab swarm begins to advance up the shaft, ignoring Alessia completely and flowing up the walls after the rest of the party

OK. Here’s how things stand. The door is one massive stone. Alessia, you can likely brute force it open, but it will take time. The undead buggies are following the rest of the group up the shaft. Let me know how we want to proceed

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

Justin, hovering over the hole in the ground, hears the first shuddering 'kaboom', and sees the swarm start to climb the shaft. The wizard looks a little pale.

"Alessia! WHAT are you DOING down there?!? We're trying to bar-be-que some bugs, and your standing in ground zero!" Justin calls out.

The wizard desperately starts doing some re-calculations, trying to figure if he can fireball the swarm without cooking the undead avenger. Who, from the sound of it, is trying to bring the tomb down on top of herself!

How deep is the shaft again? Since Fireball no longer fills an area of volume, but extends in a circle until it hits a solid object, If the depth is right, we can target fireballs in the middle of the shaft, and avoid Alessia. (WE may want to back up from the opening a little bit,... Since if it extends past whatever is blocking it, it spreads out again,...) ;P

EDIT- This is what I recall from a while back, but I do not think it changed in PF1??

Blayze Female Aasimar Gunslinger (Mysterious Stranger) 2/ Paladin (Holy Gun/Divine Hunter) 9

For PF1 Fireball is pretty much an expanding 30ft sphere of flame that hits everything in the area. "A fireball spell generates a searing explosion of flame that detonates with a low roar and deals 1d6 points of fire damage per caster level (maximum 10d6) to every creature within the area. Unattended objects also take this damage. The explosion creates almost no pressure."

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

Yes! (20' radius, so 40' across) And the last part of the spell description, 'Unless the dmg breaks through the barrier, the radius of the fireball stops at the barrier, just as all other spell effects do' (paraphrased), so I can fill the tunnel with fireball 40' across, but it stops at the walls. Essentially creating a 40' deep shaft of instant BBQ! :)

Found the post! 100' deep shaft.

Justin makes a gesture, and his conjured candle-lights migrate to the shaft, and begin floating upwards also, keeping pace with the creeping, creepy undead insects.

"Wait for it! We don't wanna cook Alessia. Hope she leaves something for us to explore. Sounds like she's trying to collapse the tomb! Wait for it,... Wait,... FIRE IN THE HOLE! FUEGO!"

Justin waits for the swarm to get about halfway up the shaft (50'ish down) then drops a fireball down to explode in the center of it. So 40' vertical section of shaft is engulfed in flames, and should not reach the top or bottom of shaft.

Sheesh, My magic math is getting crazy! ;P SHORT version, with all feat/+1CL bonuses, +Intensified, +Spell Specialization, +Rod, +50% Dmg via empowered Spellshard(Amulet) (17d6+6+1d6+7d6)

17d6 + 6 + 1d6 + 7d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 2, 5, 6, 2, 2, 6, 1, 4, 3, 4, 1, 3, 6, 1, 5) + 6 + (1) + (6, 6, 2, 4, 3, 5, 4) = 95

The runes on the entire last third of Justin's Blasting Rod begin to glow with a reddish glow, as his other hand clasps the amulet hanging on top of his shirt. An almost fist-sized ball of fire shoots from the mystical focus and down the shaft. A bright red glow illuminating the walls as it zips on it's way. A moment later there is a muffled but loud roar, and a flash of orange-red light, and Justin throws his sleeves over his face to protect himself in a reflex action.

The wizard coughs at the resulting dust and debris, and ineffectually waves his hand back a forth a couple of times trying to clear it as he peers down the shaft.

Justin glances over at Merle and Blayze.
"Um. If they survived THAT, they are ALL yours ladies! And heaven help us if that was only the first line of defense!"

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

Oh yes, Reflex Save DC:21 (JUST missed the time limit to edit the post) ;P

Blayze Female Aasimar Gunslinger (Mysterious Stranger) 2/ Paladin (Holy Gun/Divine Hunter) 9

Best part ---> A swarm takes half again as much damage (+50%) from spells or effects that affect an area, such as splash weapons and many evocation spells.

Bribes always welcome

Yeah, that’ll do’er

Hamar swings up gracefully out of the shaft and spins back to gaze down at the approaching swarm of foul scarabs. As soon as Hamar is clear, Justin’s Mago-nuclear bomb drops down the shaft as the chittering swells and echoes through the tunnel. The explosion sends a plume of smoke, soot, and burnt chitin ash into both rooms. After the dust settles and Justin and Hamar wipe the soot from their eyes, they see that the shaft is now scarab free. It might take a while for the iron rungs to cool down, they glow cherry red in the blackened stone

OK, out of initiative

Alessia slams against the door several times more and manages to get it to swivel on a hidden pivot. A dark hallway is revealed

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

ROFLMAO! I Luv the photo! That works perfectly. :)

"Um. Yeah." Justin coughs lightly a couple of times.

"Someone called for an exterminator?"

female Tiefling 13th level Duskblade

"Not just bugs, but undead bugs? What's next? Undead mold?"

Karrin is clearly thinking about the horrors that can ruin food.

The Barbarian wrinkles his nose at the smell, "That is horrible to smell but effective.

Mold?" The Barbarian sighs, "These enemies are to be fought by farmers! Pests and molds...."

He waits for the rungs to cool down and then descends, muttering about mold the entire way.

LOL that photo

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

"Well, to be fair, I HAVE seen molds and fungi that are capable of walking and fairly capable of violence." Justin offers to the barbarian as he flies carefully down the shaft behind him, Blasting Rod at the ready.

Bribes always welcome

Alessia continues to hammer away at the stone door even during the fireball in the shaft sending a billowing cloud of hot black ash around her. It bothers her not a jot, as she continues slamming the rune-encrusted stone. As Justin and Hamar reach the room, hands warmed from the still-toasty iron rungs, there is a loud *CRACK* and the door shifts, revealing a darkened hallway.

Alessia can see that the hallway is lined with more murals of various scenes, but the scenes seem to be a lot darker than the pastoral ones that had graced the upper chamber. There are scenes of human sacrifice, people being thrown to aquatic monsters, and demon summoning.

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

"Alessia? What are you doing? You didn't want to wait for the rest, of, the,... group?" Justin asks cautiously as he floats down into the room.

The wizard slows down and tapers off towards the end as he realizes,... She may not be in the best of moods.

Alessia stalks down the hallway ahead of the group. She doesn't verbally acknowledge Justin's question, but she does angrily smash her shield into the wall, obliterating a large section of the mural in a shower of ancient plaster.

The Barbarian raises an eyebrow at his allies' rancor, but he says nothing. He recognizes a fellow warrior who utilizes anger when he sees one though he cannot quite remember her channeling it so plainly in their past battles.

If Hamar were his father, he might even ask about it, but he is not his father, talk does not suit him the same way. Thoughts of his parentage begin to seep in, the barbarian pushes those unwelcome thoughts back.

Justin glances over his shoulder, making sure the rest are coming, and follows Hamar while he also observes Alessia's equivalent of a temper tantrum. From anyone else.

"Hm? Oh, Uh, Hopefully we won't have to find out." Justin answers distractedly.

"But for undead, and fungi I guess, I think you'd find your swords more effective. Or better yet a large, heavy blunt object."

"A Large heavy, blunt object? Well good thing YOUR here! Hamar can always use your head!" Memnon pipes up cheerily from over Justin's shoulder.

The Mimir chuckles and ducks down behind the floating wizard as Justin whips his head around, trying to nail the sniggering skull with his patented "Wizard's Glare #1".

Blayze Female Aasimar Gunslinger (Mysterious Stranger) 2/ Paladin (Holy Gun/Divine Hunter) 9

"Well that was...frighteningly effective." Blayse says looking down the now-cleared shaft and preparing to climb down once the rungs have cooled from their current glowing state.
