Personally, as a GM, I love that sort of thing. It really helps establish what the players are capable of and bypasses most of the annoying bean counting that bogs the game down.

The local rulers and guilds still might take an intrest, what with the fortress appearing in their territory, but it won't be a logistics mini-game.

That's just me though. Some people really like logistics.

Agreed with Rose, but also that Wall of Stone is not as good for building something like a fortress as people think.

It's a 5th level spell at the earliest, and you get one 5' square per level (nine 5' squares), but it is only 2" thick. A fortress wall (building wall, not gated wall) would have been at least 6" thick, so a single casting only nets you three 5' squares.

To have enough material for a single 20'x20'x10' room, with roof, you would need forty eight 5' squares (8 per wall, 16 for the roof), so you would need 16 castings. At level 9 a wizard will have, at most, two level 5 spells in a day. So eight days later, you have enough stone for a single 20'x20'x10' room with a dirt floor.

Given that timescale, the Lyre is no faster than actually hiring workers.

Basically, my point is, the Lyre (or fabricate spell) is not OP (in a standard campaign) because of things like Wall of Stone or Wall of Iron.

Does it potentially reduce RP opportunities? Sure, if your group would have RPed with the local guild and the local workers, but it is arguably no worse than how a bag of holding means not having to hire a torchbearer or a teamster for mules.

Does it get rid of some challenges, like wide open gorges or really steep cliffs? Sure, but no worse than teleport or overland flight, both of which are the same spell level.

But that's just all, like, my opinion man. : )

I've been somewhat busy those last days.

I've just returned to work from vacations, and the motorcycle accident.

With that, a new 'director' in our branch in India is making everyone crazy with requests and complaints.

Will help you guys out this weekend, to sort what can and cannot be done.

One thing you guys need to do, however is help Nahia running things for this part.

As I said, it's up for the players to modify the horn as you see fit, and while I'll help out, I can only do so after you guys suggest something.

And interesting to hear about partial wands like that. For some reason I was under the impression that it was just half or whole.

So, how many charges of Make Whole to repair the Horn? I know there is the broken wall, plus we can get a return on our investment by make-wholing those suits of full plate and then selling them. So that's three.

Also, given all of the secret doors and things, I think I'm going to pick up a scroll of Detect Secret Doors, teach it to Andros, and scan the Horn when as we clean it up.

To tell the truth, I think you know I’m somewhat biased when the player starts to count bonus, combine feats, stack thing...

I made my peace with that some time (and fights) ago. :P

Anyway, even tho I did not used it in this fight, remember that each new Intimidate, the DC increases by 5.

So, you asked: What can you do to make it simpler?

At each new effect, factor the penalty into your test, so I don’t need to keep mentally recounting your demoralize and mentally increasing (most likely forgetting to increase) the DC.

So it is hard to keep a running tally of which checks come into play if I don't know the enemy's AC.

In my experience, as martial characters go up in level, it seems kind of inevitable. I can't think of very many martial classes that don't require ability-stacking. It really took off when Ultimate Combat came out and has gotten more prevalent with each new book. I think its something a few of the designers really like, so it has become more and more built into the game.

The only ones I can think of that don't ability-stack are Archers and Cavaliers. Melee classes pretty much all end up with if/than ability combinations that chain or tree off of each other. (Swashbucklers and Magus are the worst offenders regarding chaining or contingent abilities)

I'm curious what martial characters you favor which don't do that.

Personally, I prefer casters most of the time. Their turns tend to be more effective and less complicated. Did my spell work? is pretty much the only level of complexity casters need to worry about.

Before the finding the boards, I almost did not played, only GM'ed.
A good mention would be a 'manipulator' bard, which went causing hell into the world, but ineffective in combat.

In general, I like Role-Play deep and complicated characters, and simple combatants.
I feel very happy to just move and attack. Alternatively, move and Trip, Move and disarm.
Things like that. I know it sounds boring, but when you combine that with roleplay as well, for me it’s really funny and enjoyable.

Yeah, you are right.

I'm not sure if it was in this game where I started to post the enemies AC/Saves and sutff, to help the players enrich their narrative.

I use Google Spreadsheet and just drag the squares until they are really big. Not quite as elegant as tabs, but serves the same purpose.

Well.
It went surprisingly well, all things considered.

My father, which was already at the hospital for some months, passed away yesterday.
I have mixed feelings; I’m sad because he left, but I’m also happy because he isn’t suffering anymore. That and the accident has been taking a toll on my mental and physical health. If you guys remember it’s the second motorbike accident in the last few months.

I was anticipating some problems with the insurance company, which thankfully never happened. The ceremony is done, the man is finally resting.

Looking over our to-do list (which is a fantastic resource, by the way. thanks for putting it together) I think the first thing on the agenda is to get some kind of barracks set up for worker minions. Also the kitchen.

So we're going to need to bring in lots of bedding, non-perishable foods, and cooking stuff.

That stuff is pretty cheap, and with an outdoorsy druid-led organization at our disposal it should be really easy to hunt and harvest food supplies from the forest. Bringing in booze will keep the workers happy.

Once the food/sleep issues are done, I suggest we start on some kind of carpentry and mason's workshop to make other projects easier. We might be able to just add it onto Seren's forge.

Once that's done, I think Defenses are the first real project to work on.

(this logistical base-planning stuff was what I did in the army. Feels like I'm dusting off a set of skills I haven't used in a long time)
