Once back, Mia remarks that the leader of the centaurs reprimanded his soldiers when they thought of trying to take the spoils of the tomb. Her words seem to flow together better, and she seems mildly more confident speaking and stutters less, at least to the others.

he seems honorable, if not entirely honest. Though... well, the soldiers did um... seem to view us as lesser... I.. I think it will be best if we warn Aristide of what could come to pass... and, well, perhaps devote some work towards making our town more defensible. A-after all, if we look imposing enough, it may be able to ward off trouble.

Soraya is glad to have her owl back (I'm assuming he's back!), but she's concerned about the centaurs. "We'll need to figure out what else we can do to aid the Cliff tribe." He owl makes a small screech in her ear. "Yes, the road paved with good intentions," she murmurs back to him.

Lucias is the first to welcome the party home, winging out as you draw close. The barn owl circles until Soraya dons her falconry glove. Then the bird lands, shakes a spot of lingering moisture from his feathers, and offers his little screech.

Closer to the settlement, Seraphina finds that Bae has stacked two tiny, long legged rodents that she caught. The cat picks one up and drops it at the bard's feet, then her feline eyes mimic those of a mother whose child took too long to come to the dinner table.

"Fendir has been working hard on building the town's defenses, you might recall, Mia. I'm sure they'll have made more progress when we get back."

As they discuss the centaurs. "I'm troubled, to be honest. I don't like that the Hill Tribe deceived us. And obviously there are some would-be thieves among them, though their leader has a sense of honor per Mia's translation. The Cliff Tribe helped us with the hunt, so of course my first reaction is to come to their defense. But as I think about it, it is true, they are messing with dangerous magics by raising undead guardians. And how do we not know they were raising an army of undead to fight the Hill Tribe and not the other way around?" She shakes her head. "It may be dangerous to bide time, but I think we she wait and see how things go before getting involved on one side or the other." She pauses. "But perhaps we should leave the decision to Aristide.

Kalig then goes and tends to Matilda, who's had a long day. She'll then, if it is not too late, chat with the guards to see how things went in their absence.

Kalig's words are punctuated by the north wall, its tan stones scavenged from Kaskkari ruins and laid down by Fendir's small tribe. It stands eight feet tall and stretches nearly 200 feet, guarding the settlement against the wide open grasslands at your back. Although the hobgoblins and other settlers have yet to erect walls to the west or east, this initial bastion provides some sense of comfort.

Mia bids farewell from the party for a moment, stating she needed to check on the makings of her small shop and home near the river. As she nears teriel runs out with a smile. She gives Mia a big hug.

see, everything is alright. So, how many lives did you save from trees?

Mia smiles despite herself. It was far more than just trees mind you. Did you manage to handle everything alright? I should have checked the weather before I left. I didn't mean to leave you alone to pick up all the ingredients.

Teriel laughs. please, it was easy. Besides, the rain did the garden good. Now come on, tell me what happened! Is that dashing young rogue as tough as he makes out to be?

Mia smiles slightly.

well, honestly it was terrifying. But, yes, franconix certainly made quite the impact in a fight. Come on, lets check on the potions and I'll tell you about it.

After some time, she rejoins the others when they are ready to speak to Aristide.

The sight of the one large wall brought relief to the young man. He tried to remain focused however with their 'escort' still following them along. Also he had his 'injury' to keep up with. He had stayed quiet during their discussion about what to do about the two tribes of Centaurs unsure himself what would be the best way.

"I don't know a lot about magic, I do know that one of the tribes has tried to trick us, while the other has been upfront with us from the start. Is it a long scam coming from those Cliff tribe folk? Maybe but like Kalig im inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt."

As they got even closer however, he couldnt help but to give his horse a little bit of a kick, he was eager to get home.

The Viscount welcomes your counsel, but as you report the long day's events, it is clear that the matter soon weighs heavily on his mind. He leans in and speaks quietly.

"I fear there is no good path here. Taking sides and putting ourselves at war would be folly. Nevertheless, either tribe might not look fondly upon us consorting with the other.

"Nevertheless, our loggers returned safely with their haul, and I'm sure that is entirely thanks to your efforts, so at least for today we can breathe easily."

Seraphina thinks of the tense feeling between he two tribes and wonder what to do about them. She then sees her fur baby Bae and lets out a big smile. As Bae drops the rodent at her feet she cannot help but laugh as she sees her eyes, Yes I know I was gone too long for your liking. I came home though didn’t I?, as she scoops up her cat and cradles her in her arms. Sera nuzzles the top of her head as she holds the rodent by its tail.

Been a good girl, help protect our little home? I missed you girl

Upon arriving back at her humble little home, she goes inside and sets Bae and the rodent on the floor. Sera looks to Bae and scratches her head gently while placing the rodent at her feet. I’ll let you keep the second one. I’ll make a small little soup with a few herbs I’ve stashed away. Eat up sweetie

Seraphina pulls out a small pot and cooks a little bit of water while adding some fresh herbs. It amounts to maybe a cup of broth, that doesn’t taste super good, but at least she survived the undead abominations followed by the centaur tribe which could have turned hostile should news have gotten out. She thinks about how she stood there, in shock and anxious of the tribe tricking them into doing their dirty work. She chokes down the broth and heads off into a nap after the eventful day she had. She smiles as she hears Bae purring on her little nest of soft grasses of her bed.

"What's more, thanks to the help you've all provided, almost everyone had ample shelter from our first storm today," the Viscount announces with a renewed smile.

"Harkan and his kin have taken residence in some shallow ruins up on Temple Hill. However, Fendir's tribe are still largely living in tents since they've focused so single-mindedly on the defensive wall. While our community is grateful for the effort, I worry that some of his kin are growing frustrated."

Aristide looks around briefly before continuing, in a slightly hushed tone.

"Tongues have begun to wag that one of Fendir's wives is with child, so that may also be incensing the situation." After sharing this bit of gossip, the Viscount raises his voice anew to a normal tone. "For now, I hope you'll continue to pitch in with everyone else to continue setting down our roots. Soon enough, we'll be able to send for our other settlers waiting with our dwarven allies at Stoneriver."

What Downtime projects will everyone work on during the coming week?

How long will the down time be? I ask because my druidic herbalism will be giving me 5 free potions a day. (if you want, I'll only take half as adventuring gear, the rest going towards the town/her potion shop since with a lot of down time that could get a little silly.) doing a 2/3/2/3 per day run for them. As for projects, what exactly constitutes a project?

I...I hope we aren't forced into decisions by either clan. Though.. I doubt they will be leaving us alone. I'll do what I can, I'll provide what potions I can, and will see about helping out with any wood work as well.

As she turns to leave, she stops for a moment.

Sir Aristide, if.. you would, I could perhaps train ravens or other birds to act as messagers, I'm not entirely sure how you communicate with the dwarves, but if.. if you think this would help expedite things.

also, what did we do with the items/loot? I remember Mia picking up a large jade ring.

"Aristide, if we are drawn further into the middle of this centaur war--we may be forced to take sides. What do we do then?"

She sighs. "As for Fendir, he tends to believe he knows best. Tactically, he often does. Socially..." She shrugs. "He and I have often butted heads, I doubt I should be the one, but perhaps one of us can go talk to him." She gives an eye over to Dorick and Soraya in particular. "As to the issue itself, maybe we can also pitch in to building some kind of communal housing, a boarding house. This can be used by anyone who doesn't have a home, or at least a complete one, yet, including the hobgoblins and the settlers arriving later. In the future, it may serve as housing for long term visitors or refugees we take in. That I am willing to lend my back to."

Mia:
This Downtime period will be one week. Select a skill to use to generate Capital (Craft: Alchemy or Profession: Alchemist would be best). We'll say that each herbal concoction/potion you contribute to the town will add 2 to the roll. For projects, the Rooms and Buildings Guide link at the top of the page details the types of things you can build. On the first tab, the purple columns indicate how much capital is required for that structure.

"Hmm, if we have no choice but to take sides, I fear that we will have to align ourselves with the Hill Tribe," the Viscount gravely replies.
"Although the Sea Cliff centaurs provided aid and insight into hunting the local herds, we will need the Hill Tribe's aegis to continue logging along the northern forest. More crucially, if they are as powerful as we have been led to believe, then I don't think we could stand against them and survive."

Talk of the dwarves and housing lifts Aristide's mood.

"Lady Freya, one of the thane's advisors, keeps in contact with me through her magic. Typically, she will send messages that reach me through dreams.

"As for the matter of communal housing, I think that is a fine idea to pursue."

He said excusing himself to go find his wife and tell her of the events. She was no doubt going to be worried sick until he saw her. Also he wanted to see what she thought of finding a way to lug that prow back here and find a way to use it in their inn.

Of course once back with her, he glossed over his actions at the ruins, no sense getting her all worried over a few deep cuts and scratches from undead monsters.

"With no offense intended, I doubt whether our locathah neighbors are adept warriors. The leshys of the ziggurat, even less so. I am all the more grateful to have both Fendir and Harkan's kin with us. We just need to ensure that prejudices don't flare up and incite conflict among our own people."

Kalig offers to go talk to Harkan to see how his people are faring, and pick up on any underlying tensions. Let me know if I need to roll anything on that.

She needs to finish out Matilda's stall (which was begun last time if I recall) and then may look into what can be done to get a simple bunkhouse built.

In exchange for assistance, she still supplements the food supplies with foraged goods (and her goodberries) and advises the farmers on the weather patterns, and the like.

Moving forward as we wrap up this downtime phase.

Aristide's steward, Gustav, quietly approaches each of you one morning, about a week after the logging expedition. He indicates that the Viscount would like to speak with you about a sensitive matter.

"Thank you, dear friends, for meeting with me," Aristide speaks to you. He sits in his chair, set upon a small knoll overlooking the river

"As I mentioned, our dwarven allies keep in contact with me through magic. Well, Lady Brightshield reached out to me last night, and unfortunately she brought ill tidings from home."

He pauses, steeling his nerve, before saying any more.

"Galt has been invaded."

Towards the end of that meeting, before it breaks up

"Speaking of allies, Lord Aristide, there is a matter I must resolve. Perhaps a formality, but it is an important one."

He kneels before Aristide.

"As one of the Order of the Lion, I would serve you as my liege de jure as well as de facto. Will you accept my fealty officially?"

There is much to be done.

Kalig:
"Yes, I would very much appreciate if you would check on them," Aristide says softly. "I worry that he is too proud and his kin are too wary for them to ask for help when needed. What's more, the description of what you found in the ruins to the north only reminds me of how untested the ruins on Temple Hill are."

Dorick:
Aristide looks upon you and hears your vow first with a look of surprise, but this quickly fades into an expression of fatherly pride.

"Of course, and without hesitation do I accept your pledge. After all you have done for us, to do otherwise would be the act of a damned fool."

Aristide gestures for his guard, Hovant, to pass him his sword. He draws the blade and touches it upon your shoulders.

"Although we'll be forging new traditions for ourselves out here, I've always been fond of this one. It's an image that fascinated me since boyhood," he says as he finishes your knighting. "Now then, please arise, Sir Dorick. Serve your liege and your community with honor and integrity, but I suspect that you would do no less no matter what."

"Taldor seeks to reclaim its wayward province. At least that is how it appears. With the vast, open distance between us, it is hard to keep abreast with Taldan politics these days. If I had to hazard a guess, though, I would say that the old Grand Prince has died and his successor is of a bolder, more militaristic bearing.

"Despite lingering, wistful memories many among us may hold dear, this tide of war would normally have no impact on us. However, our dwarven allies at Stoneriver are not so fortunately removed. They've remained largely withdrawn from the affairs of men for several generations, making a rare exception on our behalf.

"Lady Brightshield spoke of unrest among her people. They fear being drawn into this war by either side. This has caused their hospitality to run dry, and the families of our people left behind in their care have been firmly asked to depart immediately. I had hoped to have another season or two to build our infrastructure, even perhaps bringing in our first harvest, before sending for the rest of our settlers."

"So early? Thats not the greatest of signs, Since we know the way are we sending a team back to escort them here? Maybe we can ask one of our local centaur groups if they want to make a deal to provide escorts with us? A sign of good faith perhaps..."

He asked running a hand through his hair. He had to stifle a yawn. All the work in getting things set up was far more tiring than he imagined.

Kalig shakes her head at Francoix. "If the centaurs are at the edge of war themselves, asking them to help will both make us look like we are taking sides and endanger the settlers as they get caught in the middle. And that's if the settlers even would trust them."

She grumbles at the news. "Then those dwarves are cowards, to throw children to the wolves at the first whispers of trouble. And you can tell Lady Brightshield I said so. I understand war is no small matter, but they are at the border, and underground. They have time. We don't." She puts her hands on her hips. "So what then? Are we to head back up river and meet them ourselves? And abandon our own preparations? Or are they on their own?"

====

Later, Kalig goes over to Harkan's camp. She asks him how they are doing and relates some of their adventure in the temple up north. She frames it mostly as orcish storytelling (bragging) of adventure, but also emphasizes that these ruins are somewhat similar--hoping to draw out news of anything unusual seen, not by asking if they need help, but giving them to opportunity to show off a bit.

Sweet talking isn't actually her strong suit, but she's hoping some shared heritage and similar background might help.

"Lady Brightshield and her brother remain our friends despite this turn of events," Aristide assures the party, looking to Kalig in particular. "Their position as the thane's representatives leaves them in a bind. I'm not saying this makes it easy for me to accept this change, but I can at least understand their dilemma.

"Nevertheless, they always had a plan in place to keep our people safe. Lady Brightshield will personally lead a set of barges down the river, bringing our people and some additional supplies. Once they arrive and disembark, she will use her magic to transport her group back to Stoneriver."

Kalig:
Your well-chosen approach quickly endears you to the orc-kin. Even if you are not of their tribe or bloodline, they still find a comforting familiarity with your presence.

One of the younger warriors boasts about how he's trying to open a sealed door in one of the cellar chambers. He speaks of the treasure he imagines waiting beyond, a sentiment that draws awed looks and even cheers from the children near at hand. However, you get the sense that this adventurous, risky course of action is counter to what Harkan has commanded.

When Aristide says Lady Brightshield will lead the caravan, Kalig looks down and grumbles, "Well, you should've led with that." Then she looks away, clearly embarrassed and too proud to admit fault yet.

"Oh? Can you tell me what the door looks like? Sometimes those are meant to keep something out than stop from letting in." Kalig keeps her tone interested and matter-of-fact--unlike with the conversation she had with Aristide, she's not jumping into chiding, just prompting for more information.

Soraya isn't too surprised to hear about Taldan invading. Somehow it seemed inevitable, and with everything else going on here, why not now? Don't bad things always come in groups? But the issue with the dwarves is saddening. "Still, I'm glad to hear that our allies among the dwarves remain stout. I would expect nothing less. I hope they know that they can count on whatever aid we can provide, however meager it may be, when they need it."

At talk of Taldan militarism, Dorick's face is a blaze of emotions, one after the other.

"There were many in Taldor who would have supported an invasion of Galt, and I was once one of them. However, cooler heads led me to believe that Taldor had sufficient enemies without trying to pacify such an unruly land. Regardless, my loyalties are with the settlers here, regardless of what transpires back west, and whether here or aiding families, I am ready to act."

"My one concern is the waterfall and canyon lake, which would surely pose a terrible obstacle to any barge. I've warned Lady Brightshield about its presence midway along the river, but she's promised me that her magic can get them through this obstacle.

"As it stands, it seems we'll simply need to meet them right down there," Aristide says, pointing down to where the ground slopes away towards the river's edge. "The Brightshield twins are still gathering all the supplies they can muster for us, but they should arrive within a fortnight."

Kalig:
The impetuous orc bravo describes a thick door shaped from sandstone set in a broad, lintel-topped frame. There is no sign of handle or rung, and he guesses the door is meant to be pushed open, but it offers nothing but resistance to even the strongest among them - which he strongly insinuates is himself.

The only carving upon it depicts a circle set with wings and horns like spokes on a wheel.

If she herself cannot recognize the symbol, she Kalig agrees with enthusiasm that the young warrior (what is his name?) looks very strong, buttering him up a bit before saying that the symbol could be a clue of what is beyond -- she asks him to consider allowing her to see if she learns what it could mean; she adds very quietly that if it suggests there is no treasure within, it would save him a shock... he wouldn't want to promise treasure that is not there, would he?

She also gets clarification if Harkan knows about the door. She doesn't want to make inquiries if he is unaware---but if need be she can petition on his behalf that he retains the rights to try to open the door before anyone else.

Mia remains silent through most of the talks, thinking to herself.

If there is war... that will mean only more restless spirits in galt to come. Though, maybe, if the war is quick Taldor rule would put an end to the constant upheaval and bloodshed... IF. Either way, I doubt whoever would go to war over so small an area as gelt would pass a blind eye over us... Though, if we were at least recognized by him it would likely ease tension with the centaur.. though then we would likely loose a large portion of autonomy... ugh... this is why I prefer nature, its so serene...

So... are we to meet them before the waterfall? Or at it then? I may have some spells that could help with it, though only slightly... Mia asks shuffling her feet.

Male Human (Taldan) Fighter/Aristocrat

"I fear there may be a misunderstanding," Aristide says with a laugh. "I mean to say that the barges will float downriver and land right here, beside our settlement. Lady Brightshield and her personal guards will be able to protect our people on their journey, just as her magic helps them navigate even seemingly insurmountable obstacles."

Kalig:
The warrior, Rhork, responds quite well to your flattery, and he lets slip that Harkan knows about the door but has forbidden them from tampering with it.

"He's just afraid of what he can't see," Rhork declares, perhaps oversimplifying the orc leader's concern. "I know no fear."

As for the symbol itself, you aren't familiar with anything comparable from Avistan, leading you to conclude that it is specific to Kaskkari and perhaps Ninshabur. Speaking with Lena and other historically minded settlers, you've learned that these ancient people revered winged beasts, such as the lammasu. This symbol might be some seal, meant to call upon such a creature or a god that it serves to grant its boon upon the door and what lies beyond.

Dorick relaxes at this explanation.

"That is not so bad then! At least we can greet the newcomers."

Despite the worrisome news provided by Aristide, a gay mood of achievement and progress permeates Haven. Your neighbors celebrate the completion of the Delacouis cabin, the first permanent home in the settlement. Alongside Kalig's kitchen, Soraya's infirmary, and Dorick's animal stall, this forms the foundation of your new village.

As the first of Desnus rolls around, with the new month bringing the height of spring, work begins in earnest on the bunkhouse, cookhouse, a new stall, and workshops for Mia and Seraphina. Aside from the hobgoblins living in tents and the orcs in the Temple Hill ruins, all the other Haven residents have more secure shelter in the form of stone-walled shacks, at least. The fishers have begun landing trout from the river below Haven's perch, the farmers have plowed their first fields, and the herders graze their animals - including your herd of oxen - in the near limitless pastures around Haven.

The start of the new month is also marked by the arrival of a messenger from your locathah allies just offshore.
He eagerly informs you that a ship is approaching from the south, and it will likely come within sight of Haven on the following day.

Orc-Kin:

Kalig tells Rhork she does not think it is a symbol promising treasure--but says she will check with the town's lorekeepers. After all, it may also be a clue how to break it! She advises him this also means she must tell Harkan about her inquiries, to offer due respect to his chief--but promises she will speak on Rhork's behalf to back him that he has the right to approach the door should they determine what within is valuable before anyone else.

If she manages to get him to agree without causing too much fuss, she will speak to Harkan about the conversation they had--and also note to him this place will cause this kind of curiosity; she doesn't advocate for Rhork's punishment, as such. She tells Harkan (not Rhork) the symbol has an image of a guardian on it that makes her worry it seals something dangerous--it's one thing if Rhork or the others get a bit battered due to curiosity, but another if something is unleashed that harms both the tribe and the rest of the town. She asks him what he thinks the best way to handle the situation might be. If that goes okay, she'll go about consulting the party and Lena.

As the spring arrives, Kalig makes offerings at her altar, and leads anyone in prayers for good harvest and good hunting and fishing as best she's able--she is no priest in the traditional sense, she knows, but it doesn't hurt to boost morale where she can.

Dorick has begun looking around for likely lads and lasses, seeking candidates to train in calvary or militia tactics.

The first two willing recruits are the pock-faced Buckel and the eye-patch wearing Tilla Crookshanks. Both have prior training at arms, having served as guards. The tanner, Connetlie, also volunteers, speaking at length about his service in his old local militia. Rolf of the woodcutters and the blacksmith, Ursula, also offer to join when approached. The most surprising candidate, though, comes from among the orc-kin.

Harkan One-Arm personally escorts the full-blooded orc brave and submits him for training.

"This is Rhork. He is strong of arm and eager to prove his bravery," Harkan explains, occasionally casting a watchful eye upon his charge. "He agrees that protecting his tribe is the noblest way for him to do this."

The tone of a parent, speaking of an ill-disciplined child, colors Harkan's words. Indeed, Sir Dorick can see that Rhork is less than thrilled to be included in this training cohort, but he is resigned to the task commanded of him.

Dorick greets each of the recruits, and then gives a speech, looking each recruit in the eye at various points:

"For those of you who do not know me yet, I am Dorick. Once, I was in the Taldan Horse and saw action. Our new home has some decent neighbours - and ones who may attack. So better to get started as soon as possible on forging defenses. Namely, us."

I take it Rhork showing up for Dorick's training is part of the result of Kalig's actions? I'm proceeding, assuming so and that Harkan is aware of Kalig's actions.

Kalig goes to the party as well as Lena Kensley, gathering them together over a shared meal or some such convenient moment. She speaks quietly. "Harkan's clan have found a sealed doorway in the ruins. They have not been able to open it, and Harkan has forbidden them, but that hasn't stopped some from trying. There is a mark on the door, a winged bird person. Lammasu or something." If she is able, she draws a rough sketch in the dirt or something like. "Any of you know what it means?"

She tilts her head over toward Dorick, still speaking softly. "Your new recruit Rhork was the one trying to open the door. I don't suggest we try to open it--he's sort of called dibs and it'd cause strife, I think, with the orc-folk if we meddled too much. Harkan no doubt has assigned him to you to keep him occupied. He's a very prideful fellow. Maybe if he finds another way to prove himself, he will be less distracted by such things." She gives an extra nod, as a hint Dorick maybe has an opportunity to do something there.

"I see. I did get the sense he was pushed to join. I will do what I can."

The human recruits respond well to Dorick's training, and even Rhork seems more amenable to the idea. Of course, nothing passing for words passes his lips during the training. Dorick remains too focused on drilling the volunteers to really take notice of their mood and aptitude, yet he can still tell that the orc recruit remains aloof.

.....

Not long after dawn, the ship comes into view on the southeastern horizon. A pair of triangular sails casts a distinct silhouette against the rising sun. As the ship draws closer, you can see that it possesses a sleek hull, crafted from pale wood.

Perception DC 25:
For a fleeting moment, you catch a glint of light reflecting from the ship's deck, like the momentary sparkle of a gem. You suspect it was the lens of a spyglass, suggesting that the ship's crew has spotted Haven.

Knowledge (Geography, History, or Nobility) DC 15:
Once the ship comes within better visual range, you are able to identify the insignia upon its pennants, sails, and bow.
This vessel belongs to the Imperial Navy of the Padishah Empire of Kelesh.

Seraphina works on going around Haven collecting supplies to eventually build a Craftsman Workshop so she has a place to do her arts, but also so others could enjoy it too.

She looks on the horizon as she sees some ship drifting towards them. When the sails are within view she spots the colors and logo on the flag. She doesn’t recall Khelesh coming to visit them. She rushes off to find Dorrick and the more martial inclines of her party.

We have Khelesh visitors on the water. We’re they the ones coming to see us?!

Dorick looks pensive.

"I faced Kelishites on the field, not at sea. But I recognise their Imperial Navy all the same. At least I can speak their language. Can anyone else, so I know who can translate?"

Seraphina and Kalig's keen eyes are the first to pick out key details as the wind carries the vessel closer.

A half-dozen small ballistae sit upon the deck, while a larger one occupies the foredeck. The silvery glint of armor can be picked out among members of the crew. Although not a naval veteran, Dorick judges that this is a military patrol ship rather than a trading vessel.
