GM MaUC
Following the tunnels going south, Brother Cyrus comes to a new intersection... To his left another tunnel feeds the dark green sludge to the already disgusting sewer water.
Deep into the tunnel leading east, Cyrus can discern two or three round-ish silhouettes, almost completely immobile, save for a few small agitated moves on top of it. The paladin also hears low rending sounds and occasionally some sharp snarling...
To his south, he can't see anything. In fact, the tunnel is unusually dark, even for the underground... But Cyrus hears the sound of small, inconstant water splashing.
GM MaUC
I will be busy until the weekend. Bot me as appropriated.
Riiight... I have to bot Eitylen for the time being.
Brother Cyrus is soon accompanied by his allies. The alpha otyugh doesn't follow your group, though.
GM MaUC
Tai Leng approaches quietly... When he gets close enough, he seems the corpse of three dead otyugh... Their blood and innards leaking into the water flow, resulting in the green sludge you've been seeing.
Most disturbing, though, are the creatures on top of the corpses, slowly but viciously devouring the dead otyughs. They are no bigger than a dog, but look like skinless monkeys, with bright yellow eyes and sharp black claws and fangs. Their tails are shaped like a scorpion's stinger.
Busy with feast, the creatures haven't noticed Tai Leng... Yet.
Tai Pao Leng
Can Religion or Planes identify them?
Leng goes back to the others and explains the situation.
"How would you like to proceed? We need to be rid of them, but there's no telling how strong they are."
Brother Cyrus
1 person marked this as a favorite.
"As...unfortunate as they look, those creatures don't hurt anyone. It's only right we bring these creatures swift justice."
GM MaUC
If you refer to every creature by the word "creature", things might get a tad confusing... :P
As you discuss the situation with each other, some of the creatures make a quick pause in their meal and look at you. Identifying your group as strangers and intruders, they screech angrily, baring black fangs and bright yellow eyes at you.
They move to attack, but Brother Cyrus reacts a fraction of a second faster than all of them. Eitylen and Tai Leng aren't quite as quick this time...
Brother Cyrus: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25
Eitylen: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
Tai Leng: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Meat Monkey: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22
Meat Monkey: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
Meat Monkey: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
Meat Monkey: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14

Round 1
Brother Cyrus' turn.
Brother Cyrus
Cyrus advances forward and readies himself for combat.
Double move
GM MaUC
Oh, boy...
The skinless monkey-like creatures charge towards Brother Cyrus, jumping and snarling... Two of them reach Cyrus and try to swarm the Paladin. They intend to pierce his flesh with their scorpion-stingers.
Two other monkeys rush to attack, but can't quite reach their target yet...
There are two "monkeys" on your square and two others 10 ft from you. You get AoO vs the first two.
sting: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 = 3
sting: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 = 3
The stings cause pain and injury, but Brother Cyrus doesn't feel any other effect.
Brother Cyrus: Take 6 damage. If you kill one of the monkeys with your AoO, it doesn't deal damage to you, obviously.
- - -
Tai Leng's turn.
Brother Cyrus
Slash!: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Damage: 2d4 + 11 ⇒ (1, 2) + 11 = 14
GM MaUC
Not quite enough to drop them... But pretty damn close!
You still take 6 damage, though.
Tai Pao Leng
Tai rushes forward into the thick of things and aims a kick at one of the monkey-scorpions, aiming to sweep it off its feet.
Trip: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27
Mid-fall, he palm strikes its chest, sending it flying into one of the monkeys behind it.
Improved Ki Throw Bull Rush: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
If the Trip and then the follow-up succeeds, on of them hits the other, and both are knocked prone: One in the square the second one occupied, the other knocked back a square and then tripped. All in all, this should put one of the monkeys in Cyrus' square, prone, and one right behind him, away from me.
He then slams his palm down on the first monkey he struck, smashing it into the ground.
Attack vs Prone: 1d20 + 8 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 8 + 4 = 20
Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
I don't believe my movement provokes, since it looks like they're Tiny creatures (they have no reach, so don't threaten squares).
GM MaUC
I think your movement provokes if you go through their squares, rather than around/past them... But I couldn't find a definitive answer.. The wording is somewhat unclear, IMO.
In the name of fairness and sense, I'll say Tiny creatures to indeed threaten their own squares... Starting next encounter.
Anyway...
Tai Leng finishes off the "monkey" Brother Cyrus had almost cleaved in half, and pushes away one of its friends. The remaining monkeys rush towards you, but their short legs aren't fast enough to bring them into reach.
Eitylen charges and strikes one of the advancing "monkeys".
dagger: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28
damage: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7 Sneak Attack: 2d8 ⇒ (5, 7) = 12
His daggers pierces through the little creature's chest, slaying it instantly.

Round 2
Brother Cyrus' turn.
Brother Cyrus
"Damn things are quick!"
Slash!: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Damage: 2d4 + 11 ⇒ (4, 1) + 11 = 16
GM MaUC
Brother Cyrus slays another "monkey".
The last two creepers hiss in anger and flee...
Well... Two of them do. The other hasn't had its turn yet. However,
even with the Withdrawal action, they still provoke from Tai Leng.
So... Tai Leng gets an AoO... Also, it's his turn.
Round 2
Tai Leng's turn.
Tai Pao Leng
AoO Trip vs Monkey: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 15
If successful, one of those should move back to me.
"Finish them quickly, who knows what they'll get up to if they escape!"
Leng then sprints over to the monkey that got away and aims a sweep, followed by a stomp at it.
Trip: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14
Attack 2: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
I marked the spaces I wanted to put the monkeys I tripped with little cyan dots (I can choose where they fall with Ki Throw).
GM MaUC
First trip works. Second one doesn't. Can you guess their CMD?
Tai Leng stops one monkey from running away and chases the other one... However, the second critter is cleverer than its siblings and manages to (barely) avoid Tai Leng's attacks.
In chasing his target, the martial artist finds another batch of dead otyughs... Their corpses mostly devoured, with no other "monkeys" around them...
Another monkey runs away, leaping to the other side of the water-flow to avoid Tai Leng. However, it's quickly followed by Eitylen, who is just a step behind his tian companion... The elf uses his running to add momentum to a quick throw of his dagger.
dagger: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20
damage: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 Sneak Attack: 2d8 ⇒ (1, 8) = 9
The creature is still alive, but just barely...
- - -
Round 3.
Brother Cyrus' turn.
Oh, BTW... If a character token is flipped sideways on Roll20, that means the character it represents is Prone. e.g.: The "meat monkey" right in front of Brother Cyrus.
Brother Cyrus
That is a LOT of dead otyughs.
Cyrus attempts to cut down the monkey before him.
Slash!: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
Damage: 2d4 + 11 ⇒ (1, 3) + 11 = 15
GM MaUC
That is a LOT of dead otyughs.
Right?
Brother Cyrus pierces the creature's shoulder, but his attack isn't precise enough to kill the little creeper, so it quickly stands up and tries to run through under the Paladin's leg and away from him...
Brother Cyrus gets an AoO against "meat monkey 2"
Meanwhile, another one of the creatures runs away from Tai Leng, turning around the next corner. Screeching and hissing all the way.
I drew a red line showing the monkey's escape route.
- - -
Round 3
Tai Leng's turn.
Tai Pao Leng
Did the 23 to-hit not hit it? The monkey seems undamaged.
Leng does a flip over the sewer water and double axe kicks the monkey.
Attack 1: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Attack 2: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
GM MaUC
Oooh... I see now! That 2nd attack was from FoB! I thought it was triggered by the Trip attack, so I disconsidered it because the trip failed! Riiiight... In that case you hit the "monkey".
You didn't specify, so I'm guessing you mean you attack the "monkey" next to Eitylen's dagger.
Tai Leng's flying kick finishes off another one of the grotesque creatures.
- - -
Round 3
Eitylen's turn.
Eitylen
Eitylen moves, and seeing that there are more monkeys ahead he says to the others,
There are more of these things this way - The elf then go for his dagger
GM MaUC
Eitylen gets his dagger back.
- - -
Round 4
Brother Cyrus' turn.
Brother Cyrus
AoO: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
Damage: 2d4 + 11 ⇒ (1, 2) + 11 = 14
Cyrus then runs after his friends.
"Careful, these sewers are like a maze!"
GM MaUC
The remaining "meat monkey" joins three other creatures... Two of them just like itself, the third one is bigger and more vicious-looking.
They turn and growl and hiss at your general direction.
Round 4
Tai Leng's turn.
GM MaUC
And now you're allowed to choose Tai Leng's actions for the turn... In 12h I'll just skip it altogether.
Tai Pao Leng
Tai moves up a bit, and seeing a larger threat focuses his Ki until his skin hardens.
Move, cast Barkskin.
GM MaUC
Your AC increase should be a +1, since you already have a +1 enhancement bonus to your natural armor (from level up)
Tai Leng's ki makes him tougher.
I placed the new enemies at the end of the initiative order, so it's Eitylen's turn.
Round 4
Eitylen's turn.
GM MaUC
The three newly arrived skinless monkeys charge their closest target... In this case, Eitylen.
Sting: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18
Sting: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11
Sting: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (20) + 11 = 31
crfit confirm: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 13
damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
The two smaller "monkeys" miss their attacks (and provoke AoO from Eitylen for entering his square), but the bigger one pierces Eitylen's flesh, just barely missing the elf's throat.
Eitylen: Take 5 damage and give me a Fort save (DC 14) vs Disease
Everyone: Give me a Perception roll.
- - -
Round 5
Brother Cyrus' turn.
Brother Cyrus
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
GM MaUC
You see/hear nothing new.
Still your turn.
Brother Cyrus
Brother Cyrus jogs to catch up to his friends.
GM MaUC
The last monkey charges Eitylen as well.
sting: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
damage: 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2
He has better luck than his friends and bypasses the rogue's defenses.
Eitylen: Take 2 damage and roll Fort (DC 12) vs disease.
So... Recapitulating: Every single one of the small meat monkeys provoked an AoO from Eitylen. Two monkeys hit Eitylen and he must make 2 Fort save vs disease.
Also, Eitylen and Tai Leng still need to make that Perception check. If they don't, I'll roll it for them.
- - -
Round 5
Tai Leng's turn.
GM MaUC
Perception (Eitylen): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
Perception (Tai Leng): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21
Eitylen and Tai Leng hear human (?) voices talking. The sound seems to come from south.
Tai Pao Leng
Tai Leng moves back a bit, and then does a sick wall run to land on the other side of the monkeys.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (13) + 14 = 27
Move back 10 feet to get a running start, move back to where I was and then jump a solid 20 feet, for all 40 feet of movement, even.
On landing, he sweeps the feet out from under the bigger monkey. Curious, he snatches it out of the air and swings it into the green sludge-filled water.
Trip+Ki Throw: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (19) + 10 = 29
GM MaUC
Tai Leng trips the creature on the water...
It hisses. Obviously angrier and more annoyed than before, but seemingly unharmed.
- - -
Round 5
Eitylen's turn.
Eitylen: Give me 2 Fort saves before describing your actions. I don't want to have to roll your saves for you.
Eitylen
Eitylen: Give me 2 Fort saves before describing your actions. I don't want to have to roll your saves for you.
FOrt: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
FOrt: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21| GM MaUC |
Eitylen feels his stomach churning and has to spend a moment holding his bile back. Even so, he's not out of the fight...
You feel some minor nausea:
When in combat or performing a similarly physically demanding activity, roll 1d4 every turn (including this one) before acting. On a roll of 1, you lose a move action by either vomiting or holding back the urge to do so.
You suffer a -2 penalty on all saves against disease and nausea, but for the next 72 hours, you cannot be infected again with this same disease.
Outside of combat and other physically demanding activities, the roll is only needed once every hour. You get a new Fort save every day.
Succeed on two in a row, and the disease is gone.
Still your turn, BTW.
Eitylen
1d4 ⇒ 1
5 ft and attack the flanked monkey
Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (18) + 11 = 29
slashing damage: 1d4 + 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + (2, 8) + 4 = 18
GM MaUC
I'm guessing that "Perception" roll was meant to be your attack.
BTW, your standard AC is missing from your class/level tab.
Eitylen kills another one of the monkeys. The remaining little creatures strike back...
claw: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21 damage: 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2
claw: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22 damage: 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 = 3
sting: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
claw: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
claw: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
sting: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
One of them manages to deal some damage with its claws, while the other simply misses all attacks.
The bigger monkey, however, chooses a different target. It simply floats a little bit to the left and assaults Tai Leng.
claw: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
claw: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
sting: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23 damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Tai Leng easily avoids the creature's claws, but isn't able to deflect its stinger this time.
- - -
Eitylen: Take 5 damage
Tai Leng: Take 8 damage and roll Fort (DC 16) vs disease.
- - -
Round 6
Brother Cyrus' turn.
Brother Cyrus
Brother Cyrus tries to hack these monkeys out of the way.
Slash!: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
Damage: 2d4 + 11 ⇒ (3, 1) + 11 = 15
GM MaUC
It's actually kinda of amazing how you manage to just barely leave them alive every time.
Brother Cyrus slashes one of the lesser monkeys, ruing it through, but not thoroughly ending the creature... It still breathes, but with great difficulty.
Huh... Your Initiatives are all next to each other now. I guess you can act in whatever order you want, then.
- - -
Round 6
Tai Leng and Eitylen's turns.
Tai Pao Leng
Apparently the attacking from land into water rules only work one way, I didn't realize that until now. Well that's b!!**%*~.
Basically wasted my turn there to buff the monkey's AC, especially since I forgot to make my second attack.
Still, is there no gap or anything between water level and sewer sidewalk area? That should be an awkward reach up from down there, if it can even reach at all.
GM MaUC
There's a gap, but the bigger monkey has 5 ft reach, so he can still hit you... Well, your ankles, at least. You do get a +1 to-hit for having the higher ground, though.
GM MaUC
Well... I'll rule the monkey doesn't really get any bonus to AC or concealment in this case, since it's too close for it to matter and it should be canceled off by being below your feet anyway.
In any case, still Eitylen and Tai Leng's turns.
(Also, you used the wrong alias)
GM MaUC
Eitylen finishes off the half-dead monkey.
Round 6
Tai Leng's turn.
