Kultha reacts to the technomancer's relaying of the accessed data and associated deduction with a telling swivel of her eyes

"So we have the crew's insignias... but no indication of their fate."

The big mech-tech shrugs at the images of the cats;

"Perhaps there was one of my race onboard? Felines are considered a potential source of protein in the Veskarium..."

As she mulls the unfolding mystery, Kultha raises a further concern;

"Bozhe Moi, our visit to this Vat Garden does not bode well..."

As the party leaves the shop, Julzakama begins ripping into the old computer again, as parts and broken components go flying. Before Kultha exits, he shouts out,

"ne pozvolyayte etomu gulyu otrezat' bol'she vashego khvosta"

Vesk:
"Don't let that ghoul bite off the rest of your tail, brood-sister!"

I assume you Take 10 on a Diplomacy check to ask the locals more about the Vat Garden as you make your way to that section of town.

The shopkeeps and loiterers along the streets are happy to tell you what they know about the Vat Garden and provide you exact directions. It's a Ysoki-operated garden where the ysoki surreptitiously accept corpses to help grow their plants. An open secret around Downlow is that the ysoki act as a mortuary for the very poor; they take dead bodies for free as mulch for their plants. This side business is not technically illegal, and the ysoki cultivate good relations with local law enforcement for protection.

Laeshin promptly began asking for directions to the Vat Gardens once the group left the pawnshop. He didn't seem to like that vesk very much, but he was happy to speak with all manner local, and report back whatever they told him to the rest of the group.
"At least we pulled some data off leads off of the insignia…" Laeshin mused as they walked to the 'Gardens. "It might help us while we're dealing with the Eoxian."

Not sure why someone would want to go a place where the dead are kept and buy skeletons. Especially clean ones. I mean, you're getting a skeleton, I wouldn't expect them to be clean.

Hopefully it won't smell down there.

The station passageways open into an enormous sunken pool filled with a riotous growth of plants. The air is hot and humid, thick with the smells of earth and pollen. A narrow walkway leading to other parts of Downlow encircles the overgrown vat, and a spire of some kind of machinery stands in its center. For such a busy section of Downlow, the area is surprisingly quiet. Two ladders and a steep staircase pierce the foliage and lead down into the vat.

Map Link
This is totally just a cool map of the garden, it's not like we're expecting combat or anything! :-P Let me know if you can't see it. Map will also be linked at the top of the page in the Campaign description.

"Huh... I really expected it to smell much worse." Laeshin said after taking a deep breath. Then he took a few steps towards the ladder, and looked down into the vat. "This is actually quite nice looking too, for a graveyard." He continued.

Sefel absent-mindedly approaches the machinery spire to see what significance it might have. He doesn't believe it's relevant to their current search, but such a thing in this place intrigues him.

"This is interesting..."

Engineering, analyze spire: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (18) + 11 = 29

You actually don't get very long to look at the spire because...

As soon as Sefel descends the ladder, a gruff voice calls out from the underbrush:

"Get on outta here and mind your own business, if you want to keep yer head attached to yer shoulders!"

Three brutal-looking humans emerge from the tangled trees, brandishing their weapons menacingly. They start advancing towards Sefel, and they don't look to be in a mood to talk.

No sooner does Sefel attempt to retreat up the ladder when he gets smacked by a hammer. After stepping back he draws the laser pistol and fires directly into the face of his aggressor.

Yep, Stamina Points first: he got you hard in the gut but didn't actually injure you too badly yet.

Sefel's shot hits true, striking the mercenary square in the arm and leaving a smoking burn.

The last mercenary moves quickly across the western path and ducks behind a tree. He pokes his head around and takes a takes a shot at Aazanar.

FYI a guarded step is a move action in Starfinder, so you can't do that and a separate move action. But considering we suspect the Eoxian is part of a group responsible for missing Starfinders, it probably would be okay for you to have your weapon out already.

Aazanar's spear strikes the mercenary right in the chest, staggering him. As he stumbles and gasps, Kultha's shot finishes him off and he crumples to the ground.

The other merc across the way yells out "Dammit Gurge, what the hell you dyin' for?" as he adjusts himself behind the tree.

GM: from this quote (particularly the word "staggered") it sounds like the enemy was reduced to 0 HP and you applied the Pathfinder "disabled at 0 HP" rule.

You should be aware that in Starfinder that rule does not exist. In Starfinder if you are brought to 0 HP you are unconscious and dying, and on your turn if you have no resolve left you die.

See page 250 of the rulebook.

@Aazanar:
Thanks I really just meant that for flavor. I probably shouldn't have used the word Staggered, forgot that is an actual condition. He only had 1HP left after you hit him, so he was in bad shape before Kultha put him out of his misery, but he wasn't actually down yet.

Turn Order:

Exegara (22) took a shot at Laeshin.
Merc3 (20) hit Sefel with his hammer, but died.
Merc2 (19) ran to the East.
Sefel (17) backed up and shot at Merc3.
Laeshin (12) encouraged Sefel and increased his stamina.
Merc1 (11) took a shot at Aazanar.
Aazanar (11) speared Merc3.
Kultha (10) took a shot at Merc3, killing him.
Hokhucx (7) tried to command Merc1 to drop his weapon, but was unsuccessful.

Aazanar, the railing here is really just a couple pipes, so ducking down doesn't give you much cover, but it does make you a smaller target.

You guys got lucky last turn, but they're in heavy cover down in those plants. There's a 50% miss chance if you fire ranged down into the foliage. Even if you're down there, there's a 20% chance to miss if you're 15+ feet away.

===Combat Round 2===

Exegara slides to the west, again hiding behind a tree and taking a shot up the ladder at Laeshin. Her voice sounds like a whisper, but at an unnervingly loud volume, "Finding me will be the last mistake you make, interlopers! Your skulls are in much better condition than the ones down here! Hahaha!"

Ranged Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13 hits for
Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5 fire damage!

The mercenary who had ran to the east appears at the top of the stairs and makes his way around the corner. He fires at the closest person he can see, Kultha. "Surprise, scale-butt!"

Ranged Attack: 1d20 ⇒ 8 misses.

He mutters, "Damn pawnbroker sold me a gun that's off target!"

Taking Sefel's turn since he's out in the wilderness.

Emboldened by Laeshin's encouragement, Sefel sprints around to the other side of the mechanical spire and gets a good look at Exegara, who's exposed from this side. He draws a bead and fires!

Azimuth Laser Pistol: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 misses. Looks like this paper-pusher needs a little more time out at the shooting range!

The last mercenary angrily fires at Kultha, shouting "No one kills my bro and lives!"

Full Attack.
Ranged Attack: 1d20 - 4 ⇒ (10) - 4 = 6
Ranged Attack: 1d20 - 4 ⇒ (9) - 4 = 5
and misses badly.

Laeshin winced at the pair of grazes and his singed clothes. This was his favorite tunic too. Laeshin hoped his encouragement to Sefel would be enough, because he just realized that he needed to be ready to defend himself too, so Laeshin drew his sword and adopted a duelist's stance.

Laeshin draws his Longsword, and then takes Total Defense.

Haha yeah I expected it to be a little bit more buildup too. When I played in meatspace we were all sneaking around trying to get a good look down into the vat. This time Sefel just waltzed right in there! :)

@Aazanar: You're correct about how line weapons work, thanks. But just note that you can't fight defensively as a Standard action, only as a Full action (p248). You already moved this round so I'll just take that as a normal attack, making your effective KAC 13/EAC 12 (only against Exegara) with the blocking spear.

@Aazanar: You're correct about how line weapons work, thanks. But just note that you can't fight defensively as a Standard action, only as a Full action (p248).
@ GM: On page 247 it says you can fight defensively as a part of a standard action to attack. It lists fighting defensively in two places because it is an option for a regular attack or for a full attack, and the section is organized by action type.

@Aazanar I stand corrected! OK, you've got 14/15 AC.

===Combat Round 2 Results===:

Exegara (22) took a shot at Laeshin.
Merc2 (19) ran up the stairs and shot at Kultha, but missed.
Sefel (17) ran south and tried to shoot Exegara, but missed.
Laeshin (12) drew his sword and took a defensive posture.
Merc1 (11) took two shots at Kultha, but missed.
Aazanar (11) jumped down and speared Exegara.
Kultha (10) hit Merc2 with a blast of fire.
Hokhucx (7) shot at Merc2, but missed.

===Combat Round 3===

Turn Order:

Exegara (22)
Merc2 (19)
Sefel (17)
Laeshin (12)
Merc1 (11)
Aazanar (11)
Kultha (10)
Hokhucx (7)

Exegara hisses at Aazanar as the spear pierces her abdomen, though the wound is eerily bloodless. Suddenly she growls and lurches at him, attempting to bite him!

Bite: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22 Exegara sinks her fangs in for
Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 piercing damage!

Aazanar, give me a Fortitude save.

No matter the result of the save, she takes a 5ft guarded step back into the trees.

The mercenary up on the catwalk drops his pistol and swings his hammer into a battle stance. He rushes at Kultha with the hammer over his head.

Melee Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15 hits for
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 bludgeoning damage!

Laeshin draws his pistol and shouts an encouragment to Aazanar; "This is your moment to shine!"

Draws his Semi-Auto Pistol as Move Action and uses Inpiriring Boost on Aazanar (he regains 4 stamina) as a Standard Action.

Sefel retreats after seeing Exegara's nasty bite, and stands next to Laeshin. "This sure is a little more exciting than my last job." He then closes his eyes and concentrates on his weapon, imbuing it with magic energy.

Cast Supercharge Weapon on his pistol. The next attack he makes will deal 4d6 extra damage, if it hits.

The mercenary near Aazanar sees an opening, and drops his pistol in favor of his hammer. He swings wildly at the solarian, his rage coming out in a bellow.

Melee Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17 hits for
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7 bludgeoning damage!

Let's see... Exegara did 5, Laeshin gave me back -4, and then I took 7. So that's a total of 8 damage. I now have 0 stamina and 9 HP.

Let me guess, Paralysis?

Laeshin sees Sefel get hit hard in the gut, wincing in empathy. He slides down the ladder and reaches out to Sefel, patting his back encouragingly, "Don't give up just yet! We'll take care of them!"

SA: Inspiring Boost. Sefel regains 4 SP.

Okay, so that's SPs even when HPs are still down. Just clarifying.

Haha yeah I expected it to be a little bit more buildup too. When I played in meatspace we were all sneaking around trying to get a good look down into the vat. This time Sefel just waltzed right in there! :)

Welp, he's a professional engineer who likes potentially interesting subject matter, and he's still a bit naive in all of this. He'll learn. Also, back to civilization :)Thanks for the botting. Marked off the pistol charge, spell use, and SP regain.

@Aazanar: You guessed it.
Paralysis: 1d2 ⇒ 2 rounds. You're frozen in place. You can take mental actions *cough Daze cough*, but no physical actions. Your DEX modifier is effectively -5 for the next two rounds.

@Sefel: Welcome back! Yes, Inspiring Boost only heals SP, even if HP is already down. Other healing spells and abilities only work on HP, ignoring current SP. I really like this system, it makes a lot of sense once you see how it all fits together.

So we're still waiting on Aazanar, Kultha, and Hokhuckx to finish out the round.

Aazanar crumples to the ground, dropping his spear with a sigh.

Aazanar suddenly stands rigidly fixed in place. He struggles to move, but only manages to squirm slightly.

Edit: Upon reading the paralysis description I realized it doesn't make you fall prone.

I was trying to find out what constitutes a "mental" action. One person said that only things that are explicitly referred to as mental actions can be used, and spells and spell-like abilities are generally not. Maybe because they provoke? But I can't find any reference to the term "mental action" in the core rulebook outside the description of Paralysis.

But even though paralyzed I am still conscious so I still accumulate photon points and now have 3. So... Is the Supernova stellar revelation a "mental" action? The text doesn't mention anything physical I have to do, and the action doesn't provoke.

If Yes:

Though Aazanar now lies on the ground, his mote of fiery light still hangs in the air. It vibrates for a moment, then drops to the ground, and when it strikes the ground it explodes in a burst of light and flame!

Supernova (AoE marked in orange) Reflex DC 13 for half: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 3) = 9

If No:

Though he has collapsed on the ground, Aazanar's eyes can still see and he locks his eyes on the human's.

{Look behind you,} his mental command leaps from his mind to the man.

Bluff: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14

I'm not using my SLA daze because it provokes an AoO from this guy and that will almost certainly hit.
