Sefel Lamunesh |
Given how the ships are currently pointed, Sefel realizes that the heavy lasers and missiles won't work and heads over to an unoccupied coilgun.
coilgun attack: 1d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 2 + 1 = 9
Maybe all that running around between shots isn't helping his aim...
Aazanar Kroi |
Given how the ships are currently pointed, Sefel realizes that the heavy lasers and missiles won't work...
FYI the missile launcher is in a turret and can shoot any direction. One of the coilguns is also in a turret.
coilgun attack: 1d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 2 + 1 = 9
"Dammit, Sefel! Open your eyes and focus!"
Demand DC 21: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28 That adds +4 to the attack... does that make it a hit?
Kultha Cleft-Tail |
Round 5 - Engineering
Kultha hisses as the Daytripper shudders from the impact of the pirate vessel's coilgun.
The flashing engineering telemitry showing starboard shields have been depletion, and sustained hull damage does little to improve her mood.
The big tech attempts to work her magic again and improve shield ratings;
DC16 Engineering: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24
All 7 points onto Starboard Shields. Now 7/15...
"Hav replenished starboard shields Kaptain. They are now at 46.6%. Hull integrity has dropped to 85.8%... still holding."
Hokhuckx |
Hokhuckx swerves the turret, firing a missile at the enemy ship.
So, if the enemy is within the first range bracket of the missile launcher, does it just hit this round? I don't know the tracking weapons too well.
Gunnery: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Damage: 4d8 ⇒ (4, 7, 7, 2) = 20
Alledisil |
Tracking weapons move their entire range during each round, but you would have had to exceed their TL, which 4 obviously doesn't. We haven't been far enough apart for it to matter, as the missiles have always reached target first round. You have 2 missiles left!

Round 6
========
Laeshin: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 6 + 1 = 10
Lawblight: 1d20 + 9 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (9) + 9 + 1 - 1 = 18
Aazanar Kroi |
I've used Demand on Sefel so it's Hokhuckx's turn.
Demand DC 21: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15 ...Nope
"All right, Hokhuckx, get shootin'... at the... thingy."
Alledisil |
The Lawblight turns in place. Left 2.
The captain of the Lawblight screams into the intercom: "Fire everything we've got!!!"
Torpedo: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21 hits!
Coilgun: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17
Coilgun: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13 misses!
The Lawblight fires a torpedo at almost point blank range, striking the Day Tripper square on the nose!
5d8 ⇒ (3, 7, 2, 3, 4) = 19 damage to your forward shields and hull! You take 1 critical damage.
1d100 ⇒ 40 Weapons. 1d3 ⇒ 2 Your aft coilgun now has -1.

Seriously... same roll :/
Sefel sighs audibly
"I think something is wrong with this gun. The trigger is sticking sometimes!"
Kultha Cleft-Tail |
@Allesdisil: Is the Aft Coilgun glitching? (-2 rather than the -1 you listed). Just trying to get my head straight for Kultha's actions
Although as we are front facing - am leaning toward Aazanar's gambit of fire everything!
Hokhuckx |
Hokhuckx makes another shot with the missile launcher, letting his not-hands-but-claws do the aiming.
Gunnery: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Damage: 4d8 ⇒ (4, 1, 8, 2) = 15
Kultha Cleft-Tail |
Round 6
Realising that their weapons likely hold the key, Kultha attempts to augment their systems - boosting the damage capacity;
Engineering DC16: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12 [ooc]
Frustrated the vesk slaps the coupling in frustration;
"Ach. Cannot boost systems Kaptain! Forgive me!"
Alledisil |
Seeing the Day Tripper pull to such a close range, the Lawblight pilot attempts to Flip and Burn to attack their rear.
These are pirates... not particularly strategic folk. They tend to go for the obvious kill shot.
Flip&Burn,DC18: 1d20 + 9 - 2 ⇒ (6) + 9 - 2 = 13 Fail...
The ship simply can't handle the maneuver, and the Lawblight moves forward 2 spaces. The Day Tripper now gets an Attack of Opportunity with any gun, to the aft of the Lawblight!
Sefel Lamunesh |

As the Lawblight fails its maneuver it comes into plain view of Sefel's coilgun. He takes the opportunity immediately...
coilgun attack, AoO: 1d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 2 + 1 = 17
damage: 4d4 ⇒ (1, 4, 1, 2) = 8

Guys... can we retcon this to use the heavy laser? There's really no reason to take the AoO with the coilgun when the heavy laser is available and does almost twice the damage.
Sefel Lamunesh |
When I looked at the map we were pointed the wrong way for that. Does the maneuver failure provide the AoO before or after they pass us.
Laeshin the Scarlet Starlet |
The Day Tripper now gets an Attack of Opportunity with any gun, to the aft of the Lawblight!
The Gunnery Phase is afterward, but note the special ruling above. AoO have some special rules to simulate the dramatic reality that we (or they had I passed them instead of vice-versa) would have had plenty of opportunity to line up a shot with any of our guns as they passed us. I think that we target their aft because they failed their maneuver. They would have provoked regardless of success on that maneuver, but would have been facing our rear arc.
Alledisil |
Correct Laeshin. When one ship passes over another, not as part of the flyby stunt, the passed ship gets a free shot at the aft of the passing ship with any gun, from any arc. So i'd suggest the heavy laser as well. I'm totally fine with retconning a different gun.
@Sefel: Since your gunnery check was successful, I'll let you do the honors of rolling damage.
Sefel Lamunesh |
Retcon....
As the Lawblight fails its maneuver Sefel realizes it's going to pass clear view of most any gun while they pass. I thought jumping between guns was killing my aim, but I'm still not doing so hot. Let's go for one of the big ones while they're flailing.
He runs over to the heavy laser and takes aim.
Heavy laser damage: 4d8 ⇒ (5, 1, 8, 6) = 20 2.5x last roll :)
Hokhuckx |
Seeing that there is only one missile left, Hokhuckx decides to fire it, hoping the range is short enough for a good shot.
Gunnery: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Damage: 4d8 ⇒ (3, 6, 3, 3) = 15
Kultha Cleft-Tail |
Round 7
Reading more into the ship combat - am I right that the Engineering phase is first - before Helm? If so please factor below into Gunnery phases that follow in R7
Still smarting that she failed to boost the weapons systems, Kultha hisses and brings spanner and savvy to bear in equal measure;
Engineering DC16: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24
As the weapon systems power indicators rise, she rumbles an announcement over comms:
"Veapons optimised Kaptain! Ve haf them now komrades!"
Weapons Augmented - Damage die natural 1's are instead treated as 2's
Aazanar Kroi |
"Come on Hokhuckx! Lock on to those bastards!"
I failed on my demand last time so I can try again...
Demand DC 21: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11 ... :(. Well, it probably wouldn't have helped anyway.
GM: since the free attack we got was an "attack of opportunity" does Sefel get to shoot again as a "normal" attack?
Alledisil |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
@Aazanar: Yes, that's how I read it. That gun cannot fire again this round, but the gunner is allowed to fire another shot from a different gun. Buut it's a moot point.
Sefel's laser shot tears through the last remnants of the Lawblight's aft shields, and directly into their power core. The ship shudders and groans as waves of plasma erupt from its hull. And suddenly, an explosion! The broken pirate vessel slams into the nearby asteroids, never to accost unsuspecting travelers again.
You are now free to return to Absalom Station with the information retrieved from the wreckage from the Unbounded Wayfarer.

Venture-Captain Arvin greets the team with a warm smile as you disembark.
"You can undergo the tedium of a complete debrief later. First, I've arranged for you all to enjoy a few days' downtime in Kemanis, at the high-end clubs, theaters, and VR parlors. You've earned it. But,"
he warns, with a twinkle in his eye,
"after that, it'll be time to put you back to work."
Kultha Cleft-Tail |
After the Combat
As the Lawblight explodes Kultha bellows triumphantly over the comms;
"Po Shkalam Zavoyevatelya! (By the Conqueror's Scales!) Vell done boys!"
Disembarking...
Kultha flashes a toothy grin then nods toward the scarred Daytripper sitting in its berth;
"Such pastimes are niet my thing Venture-Kaptain. Permission to oversee the repairs on the ship? I know she is niet ours, but I vish to see her hale and hearty after all ve haf been through..."

"Indeed! Thank you, sir. I must off to the theatre! I have a friend who is doing Hamlet in the original Klingon! I must see his show before it closes!"
Aazanar turns to head off, but he turns back for a moment. "I do, of course, look forward to my next assignment," he winks.
