The earworm nature of Astrianna's sister's ditty is distracting enough that Leila can't really tell anything about the odd formations so it's a surprise to everyone, lulled as they are by the mostly mundane nature of Drift Travel, when a sleek alien ship of a design that none of them recognize, but obviously bristling with weapons, emerges from one of them.

There is a hail:

Attention, Pact Worlds vessel. This is the
Azlanti Star Empire vessel Fearful Symmetry.
Surrender immediately, and you will not be
harmed. In fact, you will have the
immense pleasure of becoming another
small part of the empire’s vast populace.
Refuse and we will be forced to turn you
into space dust. This message will not repeat.

The Azlanti Star Empire are the boogeymen of space. Any Pact World vessel that goes missing without trace is blamed by someone or the other on these humans who, lore says, traveled to the stars from Lost Golarion millennia before the Gap began from the ancient continent of Azlant.

Combat tracking and information in Disucssion. Vek is up!

"Azlanti? They are real?"

This information was quite surprising. Prospero-4 had read many reports of Azlanti sightings, but none of them were very credible. But here they are - somewhere in Drift, and the myth is hailing them with gun ports open.

"We are not planning to join the empire, right?" The android asks the captain, uncertain of how beneficial the Azlanti offer was.

BTW, Were they speaking common or Azlanti?

"Shelyn's tits!" Astrianna exclaims when the Azlanti vessel suddenly appears out of nowhere and the locks an uncomfortable amount of weaponry onto their vintage starship. Flailing upright into the captain's chair, she listens to the message with wide eyes before turning her head to Prospero. "Hells no. I'm no one's slave! Get ready to turn these f$#$ers into Drift Trash."

I'm going to go ahead and take my Captain's action cause it won't change much, weave it in at the appropriate time please.

"Pumpkin! Prioritize quality and save the last minute footage from external cameras 3, 6, and 8. Initiate program "Space Cowboy"." As Astrianna says commands to their on board AI, several changes take place- the lights on the bridge immediately shift, darkening everything but their respective stations. Bright pools of white light illuminate each of them within the darkness, with Astrianna's lights being the biggest and brightest. Tiny drones with comically oversized camera lenses compared to the rest of their mass descend from the ceiling and begin to hover around her, circling her location and capturing every angle possible in a slow, complex dance. The main viewscreen suddenly has 10 different screen-within-screns active, showing a variety of locations including the bridge, outside the ship, and a close-up of Astrianna. It takes up at least half the main screen alone, with so much detail Prospero could easily count the number of perfectly clean pores dotting the half-elf's face.

Leila and Prospero notice a huge jump in the usage of the ship's computing resources beyond the combat modules spooling up. Indeed, over 30% of Pumpkin's bandwidth is now dedicated to recording and processing video and audio from 43 different cameras in stunning 128k resolution, and the ship's RAID array consiting of no less than 20 Hard Drives of Holding are being filled with over 100 terrabytes of data a second; a rate that will exceed their capacities in less than half an hour. The program Astrianna has initated has even overridden several failsafes and will begin overwriting non-essential ship system if it runs out of space to record.

Sitting tall in the bridge's main chair in her pool of bright white light, Astrianna transforms from a lazy slob in designer sweatpants to a dignified and confident ship captain in sweatpants. "Pumpkin, open up a direct video and audio communication line to the enemy ship in ten seconds. Modulate outgoing message with 5% static and engage TalkSoft's on-the-fly Accent Generator. Setting Default Azlanti." She looks directly at one of the nearby hovering drones, which quickly zooms and shines a soft blue light on her face. The professional vlogger flashes a gorgeous smile and speaks with a smooth, cool voice. "TalkSoft. Let Talksoft's Accent Generator version 6.2. stand in for YOU so you don't have to stand out in your next video conference." Meanwhile, the ship's CPU usage ticks up a few more percent.

On cue Pumpkin opens up the channel to the enemy ship and Astrianna face's becomes deadly serious, staring at the main screen and suddenly speaking in perfectly fluent Azlanti. "This is The Sunrise Maiden, sleeper cell 483b from Absalom Station. Glory to the Azlanti Empire, Fearful Symmetry. We have the Xian Ambassador in cyro statis on board and are ready to make the drop-off as we were instructed. Please engage in docking manuevers."

While Astrianna had studied Azlanti in school for a project and could read it perfectly, she wasn't exactly a practiced speaker. She was hoping TalkSoft actually did what it was supposed to and generated a convicing accent for her.

If they can't see us, they can't get as good a lock on us, he thinks to himself, scaled hands dancing across the board as he ignores Astrianna's face looming above him on the main viewscreen. Let's at least give them a tougher target to hit!

Does Maneuverability good (turn 1) mean the ship has to spend one "point" of movement to turn, or that it only needs to move forward one square before changing direction?

It basically means that if you want to change direction you have to do it while moving, like steering a car, or sailing a boat. For good maneuverability to change direction by one hex facing you'll have to move forward one hex. There are stunts that let you manipulate that though. I think you did it perfectly here.

Prospero-4's declaration is followed by a moment of silence, when the android realizes the particle beam's power levels are far behind what they should be. His fingers move frantically around the command panel, searching for the cause power outage - but in the middle of the process spots Astrianna's drone army and understands the reason.

Quickly he looks for other systems, where he could pinch off the required energy. The bridge lighting level goes down a bit, Astrianna's video's frame rate drops down almost unnoticeable amount, and... Well, life support takes up a lot of juice, and who needs to breathe anyways. The android just sets up a reminder alarm so he remembers to put it back on.

With the main turret appropriately overpowered, Prospero-4 sets up the parameters for firing solution. Soon, the whole ship vibrates as the massive cannon releases a deadly beam of particles.

As Vek steers the Sunrise Maiden around and away, the Azlanti vessel, thrusters balzing white hot, swoops out of one of the cloud like objects and dives into another one. And it does so with guns blazing as a torpedo and light plasma cannon fire is sent into the Sunrise Maiden's aft shields!

Leila's insistence on very sophisticated defensive measures pays off as the sleek torpedo curves around and fails to hit the Sunrise Maiden, surprisingly it curves around to try and hit the ship again but once again fails to get through the electronic countermeasures. Astrianna's very very confusing message and Vek's evasive maneuvers might also have something to do with the torpedo and cannon fire completely missing the Sunrise Maiden!

Prospero's responding cannon fire goes wide as well though as Prospero's cannon fire goes wide.

Leila's inconclusive scans of the 'clouds' is replaced by reams of very detailed technical data of the enemy ship as her general curiosity is heightened by an intense desire to survive. She's able to draw comparisons from the unfamiliar Azlanti technology to standard parts available on the Pact Worlds. The only truly unfamiliar result is the torpedo launcher which seems imbued with relentless targeting technology!

Despite Vek's efforts the Azlanti pilot manages to outmaneuver him again but oddly enough Leila, staring very closely at the scans and metrics, notes a sudden surge of electricity from within the cloud causing lightning to hit the Azlanti vessel right in the port side dealing a significant amount of damage! "Not much shields! Only the turret in the aft if you can get us there. Oh and they have ... uh ah self-destruct!" Leila shares the most important details she can think of. Getting such a good read made her feel a lot more confident about their odds. Unidentified alien ships were more scary then the identified ones (well unless they had particularly nasty guns)!

"And let's stay out of the clouds!!" she adds with a nervous laugh as the other ship gets zapped.

She seems more annoyed by the fact they are deviating from their debut theme song than their current life or death situation.

"Is this like, automatic self destruct, or do you think I can talk them out of it?" She continues her conversation with Leila even as the halfling saves their ship from being hit by an unknown torpedo. "I'm pretty sure I can talk them out of it."

A wave of realization crosses over her face when she comes to the stunning conclusion she should be giving orders instead of chatting with Leila. "Prospero!" The Azlanti vessel swoops out of the cloud to track the retreating Sunrise Maiden and Leila can see it's aft shields start to regenerate.

Seeming to have gained a lot of respect for its prey the enemy ship fires a single precisse plasma shot rather than the previous barrage. It hits the Sunrise's Maiden aft shields and it diminishes a bit but the Heavy Shields of the Pact World ship stays quite sturdy.

The rejoinder however rips through the Azlanti ship's light protection and lands a hard hit on the hull.

Vek keeps pace with the Azlanti pilot but the pilot barely manages to edge out the Vesk and outmaneuvers The Sunrise Maiden yet again.

"You know - it feels kinda good to not be in the fleeing spaceship for once!" Leila cheers over the comms.

The Azlanti ship desperately swerves around to try and get away from Vek's sudden and very unexpected roar of speed cutting them off. That gives Prospero ample time to line up a shot on the unprotected rear of the ship, blasting right through the absent shields and guided straight to the ship's vulnerable engine room.

Leila's sensors show that the propulsion systems of the ship are almost completely destroyed causing the ship to drift forward on the endless momentum of space. Just as Astrianna prepares to hail it a sudden spike of energy ripples through the power core of the ship which, in a matter of moments, causes an implosion which leaves nothing behind but a very very blinding flash which fades to reveal a cloud of very very small fragments which really could be anything....

"Pumpkin, terminate program 'Space Cowboy'." The vlogger says while hopping up from the captain's chair before she suddenly holding her head. "Oof, stood up too fast." She starts walking towards the back of the ship as her mini drone swarm retreats back into the ceiling of the bridge. "I'll be in my quarters if you need me, editing this footage. Kind of dizzy too, I might lay down for a bit..."

"Woah! They really did use their self destruct! Maybe we should have tried shooting that instead?" Leila blinked in the face of the harsh light. Luckily halflings were easier on the oxygen then tall half-elves so she didn't notice Prospero's shenanigans just yet. So she leaned in closer to the controls as if her here proximity would make the scanner more accurate. "I can take a look! But maybe the recordings will be interesting enough? This just looks like dust and shredded scrap. Oh and take care Astri!!"

Computer: Scan: 2d10 + 18 + 4 ⇒ (5, 7) + 18 + 4 = 34

While waiting for the results to come back in the halfling spins in her chair and ponders loudly. "Why would the azlanti empire be lurking around here anyhow? Are they trying to get to the doomsday devince too? Or are they just twirling their mustaches. I've heard they all got point mustaches - even the women! Really weird. Anyhow! Maybe they noticed the corpse fleet slinking past and wondered what that was all about? Pah! If they had been more civil we could have told them about that. What do you think Prospero? Vek?"

Luckily, the Azlanti ship was little more than a speed bump for the Sunrise Maiden. Prospero-4 would be interested to learn more of the enigmatic empire, but is not sure if he'd like to meet their ships in greater numbers.

I knew Chisisek was leaving out some details, but perhaps I was too eager to jump at the chance to get off the planet, he thinks to himself.

"Oh we are just looking for some sort of doomsday weapon. And the Corpse Fleet wants it too. (They're Eoxian extremist what just wants to wipe out all life. Nasty blighters!) It'll be fun! If we find it first ... If not..." Leila makes a choking noise and sinks into her chair. Then eagerly sits up again and continues to spin. "Yeah. That would be bad. The Azlanti would probably be slightly less bad I guess? They'd probably only destroy the Pact Worlds and civilization as we know it - not *all* life. Unless they screw up ..."

Leila's scans don't show anything other than very fine fragments of what could have been once a starship. It seems the Azlanti are very very advanced when it comes to self destruction tech at least.

With the excitement over the trip to Nejeor resumes and it's a little less than 24 hours later that they exit out of the Drift with a slight shudder and a sound best described as a whomp. The bizarre purple and pink hues of the Drift are replaced by the much more familiar deep darkness of Material space dotted with stars.

The group finds themselves in a fairly standard solar system centered on a yellow dwarf sun. They have exited the Drift close to one of the planets orbiting the sun.

A cursory scan reveals a nine planet system. The first two planets are rocky and share the same orbit, always on the opposite sides of each other. The third, sixth, and eighth are gas giants of differing colors. The fourth is covered in petrified forests, while the fifth is covered in volcanoes constantly spewing ash. The seventh and the ninth are cold and barren.

The Sunrise Maiden is closest to the sixth planet.

Astrianna is on the bridge when they shudder out of the drift, and she looks up briefly from the holographic projection coming out of her wrist to glance at the yellow sun blazing off in the distance. She quickly loses interest and goes back to editing the video from their latest fight.

"Pumpkin, forward all relevant information of this solar system and its planets from the Starfinder archives to the crew's terminals, such as names or any known habitats. Then scan the orbit of the nearest gas giant for any moons or space stations." She says with using two fingers to slightly enlarge her eyes on screen.

Leila glances at the sensor data then sticks her nose at the observation panel. "Woah. I haven't been this far out *ever*. Some of these planets are really weird; those two sharing an orbit? Should be unstable! And that has petrified forests!!"

The halfling marvels for a few minutes, blissfully quiet. Then she goes to find her Starstone Compass - curious if it worked out here. On the way she takes a quick look at their scanners again and comments over the comms. "Mhm. We should try to be a bit discreet. Just in case the entire corpse fleet is out looking."

Leila's scans reveal no signs of life anywhere in the system... except for faint ones on the gas giant that they're the closest to. Oddly enough it's not on any of the rocky moons that orbit the giant, but instead from within the giant itself.

"Huh. That's it? What a shitty system. Wait, IN the gas giant?" Astrianna responds to information on Leila's scans. "Well, I hope they're sentient like the Barathu in the Pact worlds. We're not going to get very far asking hydrogen-whales for directions."

She sighs and places her hand on one cheek, propping her body up with an elbow, looking both bored and fashionable. "Take us in closer, Vek. Leila, keep scanning and get a fix on those life forms, see if you can pinpoint any clusters and ID them. Prospero, monitor all known frequencies for any short-beam or wave communications."

Being Captain was difficult, it was true. Surely the others would crack under all of this stress and decision making, but she was so clearly overqualfied it was nearly an exercise in drudgery to order them around.

But a smile suddenly flashes across her face as she realizes the best perk from all this responsibiltiy. "Pumpkin." She intones. "Play our Theme Song."

As the group's signature tune plays The Sunrise Maiden descends into the red gases of the sixth planet from the center of the Nejeor system, or Nejeor VI as Pumpkin's auto naming map module has termed it, chasing the faint signs of life Leila uncovered.

The search takes a little while and requires some triangulation and it is two hours before they close in on what the sensors are indicating in the stratosphere.

Sitting just above the churning crimson clouds of the planet is a floating city. Visual sensors show a city which is crumbling in many places while other areas are overgrown with trees and other plants. Leila and Prospero's further scans reveal the telltale energy signatures that come with technology, but they are weak and erratic.

The only place on the floating city fit to land is in the south eastern portion. A pad that seems like it was once a part of a more extensive spaceport.

AS they circle the ruins, she points out, obviously, the only landing place. "Hmm... take us down there." She says, as if it was a very difficult decision. "Prospero, suit up in case there are still any automated security systems active on the ground, or worse, cultists and Corpse Fleet personnel. "Sta-ha-ha-a-ars sta-ha-ha-a-ars .." Leila hums and makes another sweep with the scanners. A floating ruin-city was pretty cool. And then the android leaves his station and walks to the storage bay. His powered armor has stood there unused for quite some time, so maybe he should run one extra systems check...

The landing pad, emerald green, shifts as the Sunrise Maiden touches down. Thankfully it is able to handle the starship's weight easily and there is no indication it will collapse into the gas giant below.

As the group emerges carefully it turns out the colour is actually from a vibrant-green lichen which is growing on the underside of the pad, which is made of what looks like a thick, barely translucent crystal but on close examination turns out to be some sort of polymer.

The pad is open to the sky and below the thick red clouds of the planet swirl lazily. An archway stretches above a 2 metron wide walkway that joins with other walkways and leads into what might be a docmaster's building. A holographic sign stretches across the archway. Most of it is faded but one collection of symbols is still visible. Unfortunately the group's translation software is unable to decipher it though it does look like the markings they discovered on the Drift Rock.

Everyone other than Vek notices scorch marks on the polymer pad that are of a different pattern than the one recently created by the Sunrise Maiden.

DC 22 Phys Science:
Huh, the marks don't seem to be permanent and so based on how faded they are compared to the fresh ones from the Maiden it looks like the marks are only a few days old.

When Prospero gives the all clear, Astrianna hops down the ramp dramatically behind him. Her signature hot pink laser pistol (though its guts have been significantly upgraded thanks to Captain Zeera's cold, re-dead corpse) is held tightly in her grip as she sweeps the perimeter. Shining like a star in her Ysoki refractor suit, the half-elf is compeltely sealed against the atmosphere just in case this floating city is more hydrogen than oxygen.

"Seriously?" Astrianna says while making a noise somewhere between a growl and a whine. "They're always five steps ahead of us!" She comaplins while stepping over the polymeric lichen and checking the bottom of her feet to make sure it wasn't sticking. "Well, be on your guard, they probably left surprises for us."

She gestures for the others to follw her out of the space port, her gaze lingering on the faded holographic sign so her Lifecorder can capture the symbols clearly. "That's like the langauge we saw on the Drift ROck. And at the Temple of the Twelve. If the sentients that used this langauge lived in this city, maybe we can find enough examples of text to translate it."
