Has anyone played the Strange or Numenera before?
There are a few key concepts in the game.
First, players make ALL the rolls. The GM makes none.
Rolls are based upon difficulty levels from 0 - 10.
The difficulty is multiplied by 3 in order to get the necessary dice roll.
For example, breaking down a door may be a difficulty 4 might task. So the player needs to roll a 12+ on a d20 to succeed.
Players can modify the roll by working together (which may lower the difficulty) or by using effort (stat in your character build).
So to continue the example, perhaps the door is big enough for two players to charge - this makes the difficulty 3 for this task.
Or a player wants to apply effort. To use effort, he uses 3 points of might for this task to lower the difficulty by 1. Therefore, he loses 3 points from his might pool and needs to roll a 9+.

Using Edge.
Each character has a point of edge. It depends which class you are as to where the edge falls.
Edge reduces the point cost in the appropriate pool.
To continue the example above; if a vector charges a difficulty 4 door and uses a point of effort, he would reduce his might pool by 2, because he has a point of edge in might, which reduces the pool cost by 1.
So the roll would be 9+ and he would lose 2 might.
Edge can be raised when you go up in tiers (by spending experience points). We will cover that later.
Effort can also be raised by spending experience points. The first level of effort costs 3 points from a pool; additional effort for the same task cost 2 points.
Back to the example, if the PC spent two points of effort, he would lose 5 from his might pool (3 for the first point of effort, 2 for the second), which would be reduced to a loss of 4 due to having 1 point of edge in might.

Combat.
Creatures are defined by levels of 0-10, just like any task.
So if you are attacked by a level 2 dog, you will be bitten unless you roll a 6+ to avoid being attacked (level 2 x 3 per level = 3). Note - the player rolls to avoid the attack.
Similarly, to hit the dog you need to roll a 6.
These rolls can be modified by effort or assisting each other or other things like artifacts or situational things (such as you are lying on the ground making it easier to bite you and harder for you to hit the dog).
Armor subtracts from the damage you take. So if a dog bites you for 3 points of might damage, and you have a point of armor, you take two damage from the might pool.
When one pool reached zero, you are impaired. Two reach zero, you are debilitated. Three reach zero and you are dead.
When impaired, effort costs one more. When debilitated, you can only crawl. If your speed pool is at zero, you can't move at all.
You can make recover rolls.
The first recover roll takes 1 action (5-10 seconds) and recovers 1d6+1 per tier, split among any of your pools however you desire.
The second roll takes 10 minutes and gains the same amount
the third roll takes 1 hour and gains the same amount
the fourth roll takes 10 hours and gains the same amount.
After rest, you can repeat the roll cycle.
I will post more later on further rules just to keep it easier for you to digest the process. I apologize if this is redundant for some of you.

Well, you never know with newer players. And I don't know it as well as I should myself. Alas, it just is not a super popular game.
But I really like the Sci Fi aspect of it.
Don't expect me to lead you to a Fantasy setting recursion. I avoid them and substitute my own!

I have decided to try to use google drive / documents and etc for maps.
I will put a link to the current map (and other maps I want to keep accessible) in the campaign description at the top of all the pages.
It should be set up so you can add your own avatars as needed and will be able to move them around.
However, as this isn't really a game about moving on maps for combat, most of these will be used to orientate you to the situation.
Also - a player in another game of mine has the same avatar as Tanya, so if I call Tanya by another name (Willie or Wilma), I apologize now!
Last - I think I have a vector who is going to be joining you. A long time gamer, never has played the Strange.

No worries on posting rate. The game is meant to be fun, not a chore.
I will hit some times when I cannot post much also.

You can join right as they translate into the "graduation excersise" recursion (basically right now).
You can either be a trainee from a different class, or a security guy assigned as a team member or whatever.

I am assuming we have lost Vanessa.
SO - it is your call if you want to continue with two spinners and a vector, or if one of the spinners wants to change into a paradox (Vanessa was your paradox).
Truthfully, it doesn't really matter - but if you are set on having a Paradox in your team that is probably the only option.

Should reduce the difficulty by 1 (making a diff 3 task diff 2).

I would like everyone to adjust their header to show might, speed, and intellect, along with edge and effort.
Include current and base numbers.
I am thinking something like:
M: 12/12; S: 8/13; I: 14/14; 1 int edge, 1 effort; damage track 0/3
That will help me figure out if I am about to kill one of you.
May not need damage track, as that will be evident from any stat pools at 0.

Between each rest period you get 4 recovery rolls.
Each recovery roll regains 1d6 plus your tier in pool points (1d6+1 in your case as a tier 1 character).
You can make the first recovery roll after resting 1 action
The second recovery roll can be made after 10 minutes
The third recovery roll can be made after 1 hour
the fourth recover roll can be made after 10 hours
The last rest of 10 hours counts as your rest period - sleeping, eating, resting - so the cycle starts again. The first roll takes a rest of 1 action, etc.
Keith S. |
No 10 hr rest period coming yet, but there will be after the discussion with Chief Keaton.
So it is a bit of a moot point (not that you know that).
And if you were really damaged up, we would have you rest overnight or check into the infirmary or something to stand you back up before the next damage opportunity arises.

I have having some issues in RL with my aging parents.
This is going to cause my posting to be spotty for a bit.
It may also force me to drop off of online gaming - although that certainly won't be known for a few days or a week.
If so, I will be able to post and let you know.

Folks - I am going to have to close up shop here. I need to spend my time supporting my parents - one is in hospice and the other is simply not doing well.
I simply don't have the time to keep this going.
I am sorry, I enjoyed the game with you folks and was liking how it was developing.
I will give a few days for any reply posts and I will shut down the campaign.
I do hope to keep playing in the one game I am in (as opposed to running one) so maybe I will see you around on the boards.
