Let me know if you want some NPC's to interact with, or when you're ready to move on.
Once we hand-wave though my equipment upgrades, I'm ready to move on. If there's an NPC you want to throw into my path I'm happy to interact with it, but I'm not looking to spend more time here than necessary.
Maka Na'Shota
Same with Quasit, once business is taken care of I'm ready to move on but happy to have some NPC RP. Also yeah @Bulvi the gold is good. Maka can buy less food and booze to fund the full amount.

Fin has 134 gold leftover he'll throw in so Maka won't have to skimp as much on the food & booze...
And yes, I'm good to move on whenever everyone else is...

Why not go for an item with 50 charges of endure elements spell? That'd be cheaper at 750gp and no extra 5 lbs. Granted, it will last 50 days of use, but I can't imagine you guys would use them up that quickly. Or I could craft one for half that price in a 4 hours.
Also, crazy idea. A command word that changes a sash into a longsword of force. 5400 for a +1 longsword, or 12600 for a +2 version.
Also, I can make +4 natural armor item with 50 charges for 2250 gp for anyone who wants one, but of course, that's 2.25 days of work, or 1.5 days if the gm lets me work 12 hour shifts instead of 8.
Admittedly, this seems like a cheat given existing similar items, but an item like bracers of armor or amulet of natural armor have two massive advantages hence the difference in cost, namely, those items are always active and so work even when surprised/unprepared, and second, do not require an action and thus do not have action economy cost. Also, lacking charges means charges are not wasted when used in preparation for a fight that never happens. What I'm suggesting here, are not continuous and so require an action to use.
Or 375 and 4 hours for 50 charges of Shield/mage armor.
If no one minds, I'd like to hang around long enough to at least make 50 charges of cure moderate (shh, don't tell Quasit what it is ;) which has the same cost and time as the natural armor item.
So, at bare minimum I'd like 6 days for the sword, shield, and cure.

I don't want to sit in the centaur camp for a week or longer, that just seems like it's tempting fate. If we need that sort of downtime for magical crafting, I recommend we get back to the Hut and do it there.
GM_Almonihah
Wands are fine, obviously, which is what I'm assuming you mean by those charged items. What are you basing the price for the longsword/sash off of?
You cannot work 12 hour shifts instead of 8 hours, unless you want to risk exploding your work due to making fatigue-induced mistakes (this would be very likely).

I have a staff question.
I'm interested in saving up for the Staff of Frost. I've never used staves before and I have some questions.
First, the Staff of Frost holds:
Ice storm (1 charge)
Wall of ice (2 charges)
Cone of cold (3 charges)
Ice storm and Wall of ice are level 4 spells for me and Cone of cold is level 5.
From my reading on staves I understand that once per day I can add a charge to the staff by using a level 5 (highest spell slot for the staff) spell. But then, this staff only holds a total of 6 charges. So after 6 days, it will be fully charged.
When fully charged I would be able to use it to cast Ice Storm once, Wall Of Ice twice, and Cone of Cold three times. Do I have that right?
If I've only spent 3 days filling the staff before I need to use it, do I pick which charges it has?
This staff is pretty expensive (41k) so I need to save a bit. Is this something that Selena (or myself) could create for half the money?
Also, it is very likely that I won't find such a thing here in the centaur village. Is it reasonable for me to keep saving in hopes that we hit a large town somewhere where I could buy one?
GM_Almonihah
1 person marked this as a favorite.
The way charges on a staff work is that you have to spend the listed number of charges to cast the spell--so in the case of the Staff of Frost, you spend three charges to cast Cone of Cold, so you could only cast it twice if it was fully charged, and if you did it would be out of charges and not able to cast any other spells until recharged.
Staves are generally considered to be overpriced. There will be an opportunity to buy more expensive items in the future. You might get a better deal than the rulebook says there.

Wands are fine, obviously, which is what I'm assuming you mean by those charged items. What are you basing the price for the longsword/sash off of?
Not wands, well they are functionally wands except not sticks of wood (Sticks? How boring). Besides, my character doesn't work with wood, she works with cloth and leather.
You cannot work 12 hour shifts instead of 8 hours, unless you want to risk exploding your work due to making fatigue-induced mistakes (this would be very likely).
You do remember me saying something about being "back down to" 16 hours a day, right? I've been working 12+ hours a day for nearly a decade, and the last two years I have been working 14-16 hours a day 7 days a week, with only about 3 days off in those entire two years.
I'm not opposed to being limited to a mere 8 hours a day (this is a fantasy after all, and only 8 hours is a really nice fantasy), and I'm not arguing to have 12 hour days. Just don't tell me how dangerous it is to work longer for a mere few days. I know better. Sleep, food, and fun are the important mistake-reducing factors, not work-hours.
Now productivity is a different story, and there isn't a drop in productivity from over-work but rather is more like a case of getting less and less of a productivity boost from increasing hours, making it better to get a new person to work those additional hours.
"Crunch-time" and similar cases being bad and causing mistakes is because those times come with higher stress and often more than 12 hours a day which eats into sleep time (especially when you live a significant drive from work) and usually a drop in food quality and maybe even quantity, and of course, less stress relieving fun. Then there is the intensity of the work, for which people can work at "cruising speed" in which the intensity is calm, or they can "sprint" and work at a higher intensity. It is these factors that make over-work into a bad thing. So, eat well and plenty, sleep plenty, and have fun, and you'll be able to work longer with ease.
GM_Almonihah
I had forgotten about that, yes. The excuse can be that enchanting drains your personal energies in a way that's dangerous to your health and magical powers if you spend more than eight hours a day on the project.

He’s the GM, Selena, it’s his call…and this is magic we’re talking about, not real life…
As for real life, when we were in high ops tempo, I found myself working some long days; 12 or 14 hours was not uncommon then…and when I wasn’t working, I was on beeper (and the beeper usually went off at least two or three times a week, including weekends)…I got the work done but I was tired, very tired, you could even say fatigued. My wife and kids remember me sleeping in the recliner during those times as I’d fall asleep at home all the time…there’s a reason that the standard, in general, is an 8-hour workday/40-hour work week…and it was primarily about safety…
I think the GM putting a safety limit for this to 8-hour days, especially for something as difficult as creating magical items, is very reasonable…
Selena Snoe Yelizaveta
Fin, you misunderstood. I wasn't arguing for more than 8 hours (I even said so directly). The GM's description of consequences was faulty though, for perfectly reasonable reasons probably, and so I addressed that. It is like when people claim that jumping over 20 feet is superhuman because they just don't have the experience and knowledge to know better.
The standard of 8 hours was set for productivity reasons, it came from s\a study that showed productivity gain peaked at that point. Concerns for safety came later, given how unsafe society was back then.
Of course food quality has been drastically reduced since those days. Unless you have studied the actual scientific papers on nutrition, I doubt you eat even as healthy as hobos from the depression (the current nutrition crisis is downright terrifying, and mainstream has no idea about it). We just don't have that kind of good food available these days, and that does matter greatly.

A make out session and some heavy petting before passing out drunk is pretty good as far as first time gay experiences go. Quasit should be proud. A piece of advice for her, skip the part of coming out of the closet where somehow this proves that she is 100% totally straight.

Actually, before we go, I want to make sure we have our shopping and enchantment services completed, at least those we aren't going to be doing for ourselves.
GM, many of us posted lists of enchants and items we wanted to purchase, but we never really got a definitive yes or no on whether we received them. I don't want there to be any recriminations later. If we need to spend more time here to cover the RAW, we will do so. I don't particularly need to role-play those interactions out. If we're good, then we can definitely move on.
Since Tezuzu is going to be doing enchant work, perhaps we can stow him as an NPC in the Hut and just leave him there indefinitely studying all the lovely books? It would be an understandable character choice, and he's a fun character to have in the story. He might even take a fancy to the odd 'housekeeper' creature in the Hut, since they're both somewhat corvid in appearance. Do we need to discuss recruiting a new healer type player? I think we all agreed the party will likely need such a person going forward--it might be something we need to address before our Hut Subway Line takes us to the next stop, which might be on the Negative Energy Plane or something.
I also want to say that I very much enjoy your style as a GM. I'm hoping this lull doesn't indicate that you're not enjoying the game.
GM_Almonihah
Sorry, my brother-in-law is getting married this week so I haven't been as present.
I don't have any problems with the purchases and enchanting you listed.
The next stop will actually be more convenient for recruiting a healer than here, so we may make do with Tez for a little longer.

Just saw 'The Green Knight yesterday' and really enjoyed it. Don't go in expecting an action movie-- it's a story about moral choices and character with a lovely overlay of medieval magic and CGI FOX OMGERD!
Alicia Vikander plays a dual role, and if you ever want to know what Quasit looks like, it's basically her as Esel, complete with short-cropped hair, though the hair would be darker.

Man, I always miss the drama! Opening with a critical hit as Quasit pours her heart out to Sakitu's kind of dramatic too... Would have been funny to properly work out those interactions.
I'm going to try to check in a bit more regularly over the next few days. I'll work out the how much Bulvi is going to owe who once I catch up on my other posts, hopefully later today or tonight.

So would this be alright? Nice round numbers that are easy to remember, he should easily be able to repay the loans when next we get back to town. Shouldn't be long at this level to make the money back...
Loan from Maka 1,000gp
Loan from Fin 110gp
Loan from Sakitu 120gp

Quasit, I don't remember exactly what you've said about your dad so far. I seem to recall you saying that he ran off when you were young or am I confusing that with a different story?
Saki could ask her!
But the basics of the story are this: Quasit is the youngest of three children and was born in Cassomir. Her father was a small-time crook and a drunk, but when Quasit was young he was doing his best to stay sober and get legitimate day work to feed his family. Her mother married him when she was 16 -- at the time she was a Varisian girl knocked out by excitement of living in a big city and found her husband to be just the brand of handsome goodhearted sleazy bad boy that she was looking for.
However, when Quasit was quite young, 5 or 6 years old, her father got caught stealing and had his right hand cut off by the authorities in a public punishment. After that, he could no longer get decent work and went back to drinking heavily. Quasit's eldest brother Colin became the de facto breadwinner of the family, but he was a teenager doing the grunt work of a street gang, so times were very hard. Quasit's mother now had to raise three children, earn enough to find food, and look after a man who had given up on himself. In the end, she ran off with a minstrel back to Varisia and took little 8 year old Quasit along -- her brothers at that point were too lost to the street life of Cassomir and often stayed out for weeks at a time. Quasit then endured a tempestuous 8 year psychodrama living with her wastrel mother who betrayed her father (in her view) and now lived out of a squalid gypsy wagon with another man. At 16 she ran away and spent 8 months in a dangerous, meandering odyssey back to Cassomir and her father. She has not seen her mother since.
Quasit views her father through rose-colored glasses and loves him deeply. She actively looks past his faults and cherishes his sober periods when he is a kindly and gentle man, albeit weak. She knows he's probably beyond saving, but that doesn't stop her from idolizing the man he once was to her. Because her mother gave up on him, Quasit feels she must continue to stand by him, help him and forgive him, no matter what. He currently lives on a sort of allowance from Colin and when Quasit is in Cassomir, she usually stays with her father and looks after him, though she makes herself scarce during his binges when his anger comes out and he can be in turns pathetic, aggrieved and physically violent. It's a very co-dependent relationship, honestly. It's part of the psychological make-up for why Quasit has attachment issues and often unconsciously sabotages intimacy in her relationships.
As far as Quasit knows, her father is still in Cassomir, living as he has for the last 17 years.

My explanation for Selena having the weird assortment of magical abilities she has, that is both unusual and very powerful for a child and largely self-taught, is that she's a prodigy. That's what my post was meant to demonstrate, in what I figured was a rare chance to show rather than tell. I get the feeling that's not what everyone else saw.
GM_Almonihah
Yeah, in this case it didn't really make sense, since this is a ritual created by a level 20 mythic rank 10 witch that even a prodigy would struggle to follow without instructions.

Did they re-release it? I remember wanting to play it originally when it first came out years ago, but got spooked by the mythic rules. But no, I'm not playing it, to answer your question.
In my face-to-face group, we're playing through Strange Aeons. Just hit Book 4. Sooooo much Lovecraft mythos.
Maka Na'Shota
No the video game version came out, made by the same team that did the Kingmaker video game. So far the mythic rules work a lot better in a single player cRPG then a table top.
I consider the mythic rules a complete DM tool. There is a lot of nifty stuff in there if you want to bump up a monster or hand out cool rewards, but it's simply too unbalanced to let players freely use.
How is Strange Aeons? I never really looked into that one much.
