Vixie of Clan Moondew |
Happy to be here! I'll be posting as the character moving forward in each thread of this campaign, just so that there's no confusion. (Not that there's much difference between the names, but...)
The Cat of Kassen Township |
This page here has the essentials for Background Skills.
This optional rule splits the known skills into two separate categories: 'Adventuring Skills', which encompasses skills that have game-affecting use in adventuring (ex. Perception, Knowledge (Arcana) & Stealth) & 'Background Skills', which generally reflect what your character did for a living/what sort of education they received prior to becoming an adventurer.
Skills like Craft, Profession & Knowledge (specifically, ones that don't encompass the identification of monsters) are considered 'Background Skills', along with two new skills: Artistry (for creating works of art that aren't necessarily physical objects or performances) and Lore (which is a very specialized sort of Knowledge skill).

So, a question:
What would be our characters' expectation of the next week, realistically? I know this can vary from character to character, but some campaigns have certain expectations (ie "the PCs have just joined an adventuring guild and can thus expect to be out in the wilds" vs. "the PCs are in the same town they live in and are not expecting big changes"). This is mostly so I can figure out what gear to buy (tents, field rations, etc.).
The Cat of Kassen Township |
I'm planning on starting this campaign a few days before the 4th of Neth: that's the day the Everflame Festival begins.
I reckon your characters would expect the next week to be normal, save for the fact that you're hoping to be part of the journey to the Crypt.
Regarding ties to NPCs in town, there are a few characters that could serve as mentors/friends for your characters if you want--perhaps to give your characters more solid ties to Kassen, even if they're only recent arrivals (within the past few months or so).
Vixie of Clan Moondew |
Vixie bakes and has dreams of being a town guard (but is rejected for a variety of good reasons, but "lacking common sense" is chief among them). The bakery should make her at least a somewhat familiar face to its patrons.
Maxilla Dragonspite |
Maxilla is newer to town(in the past few months), I'm thinking, but their heart is in the right place and sometimes they will be at the bar engaging in deep philosophical discussions about what is really 'Good' and why.
They've made an art form of it, but not to the point of trolling or even preaching at her new-found home, ie, they've modeled their philosophy after Nirmathas' writings on the concept of freedom and goodness.
As far as work, they've been trying to help any moneychangers/merchants that need an eye for appraising -- though not REALLY good at it, they are willing to work hard.
...they were working with a couple of farmers -- or at least trying to -- but after getting stomped by horses and then cows that couldn't see her because of her small size it was decided to get her a job where her talents would be better shown.
Adriana Silverleaf |
Adriana would have arrived a week or two before the festival and stayed once she heard about it. She would spend most of her time in taverns drinking, dancing and flirting with men and women of most races (mostly women though) and probably sleeping around. She is friendly and outgoing and loves to tell stories about her (mis)adventures in Absalom...that are probably only slightly exaggerated.
She will also check on the local prostitutesearch to make sure they are okay and spread the word of Calistria to them.
Maxilla Dragonspite |
I suspect Maxilla would be confused by Adriana's antics but wouldn't be rude to a mammalian courtship effort (ie, 'flirting') and would probably share their own misadventures in the Verduran Forest and elsewhere.
They probably wouldn't be looking at exceptionally personal private times -- dragons and mammals just don't work the same way after all -- but would try to at least understand the meanings behind the attentions?
Likewise things in their past are either slightly exaggerated OR really downplayed.
They've probably been by the bakery once or twice to get food for their boss, and Bertrand has probably seen Maxilla at the bar every so often -- the stunted wings and being a kobold among mostly 'normalish' humans will probably make them stick out.
Adriana Silverleaf |
(I updated my profile with stats...and lost due something with my tablet...very frustrating. Will try it on my desktop tomorrow)
@ Bertrand Villor: They probably would get along. How would he react to the flirtatious?
@ Maxilla Dragonspite: She's does not push it if somebody does not show interest. She will happily talk about mammalian 'courtshp' and asks questions about kobold and draconic 'courtship'...and questions about half dragons...
She also tells stories of her life Abasalom...from her rescuing the Minotaur Ambassador from a assassin to her night with a Medusa prostitute.
@Vixie: Adriana stops by the bakery every morning...okay more like Noonish...and buys something for breakfast. She always seems a little tired...but still flirtatious and invites you come to the tavern that night for drinking, dancing, and...other 'night time activities'.
Vixie of Clan Moondew |
@Adriana: For a Calistrian, morning starts around noon, so I got you the first time. :P Vixie most likely accepts the invitation occasionally. She won't stop chatting about "M-Miss Shyla," her alchemist catfolk wife who travels with a nomadic band of fellow felines. Having a wife doesn't seem to impede her "other night time activities," though.
Vixie tends to be shy around men, so she most likely doesn't have much of a rapport outside of a professional one for the rest-- especially Khalaban, who probably scares her a bit with his Big Loudness and general enthusiasm :P
Maxilla Dragonspite |
@Adriana: Maxilla's insight is rather interesting.
Kobolds tend to have a rather ad hoc mating system based on the needs of a given tangle and eggs are placed into a communal creche with the hatched young that survive placed with folks that can best teach them what they need to know.
They don't seem too impressed with it, though, for some reason. No sense of attatchment to one's hatchlings that way.
Like all good kobolds, though, they'll note that there are true dragons, of which they are one, proudly showing off their wings, and then there are true true dragons... the big ones that usually get big stories with them.
As far as 'half-dragons'?
Why would someone want to do that to a poor dragon, they'd only be half of themselves, right? Would they even live through hatching?
Y'know, until you posted your response above, I never gave much thought as to what kobolds would think of half-dragons...
Khalaban |
"MAXIMUN ENTHUSIASM!"
Sorry it took a while to respond. Yesterday was my Birthday...so of course someone else rings into work sick (read - hungover) and the guy whose on Holiday and has other plans gets summoned.
Khalaban will likely be in town purely for the festival because it's fun. He'll have been found anywhere it's likely fun is to be had, although only the drinking, dancing and laughing kind for the most part. He hasn't been in town long enough to get to anything more physical.
Even if people haven't actually met him, there's a very good chance they'll have seen him - or heard him - since he's not exactly subtle and tends to wander off when bored.

Regarding PC-NPC relationships: I've got a few ideas for each PC here that I'd like to run by you:
Maxilla Dragonspite |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
@CatOfKassenTownship: If anything, that varied family puts Maxilla more at ease, because of the very jumbled nature of it. It's very much in-line with how a kobold snarls work, and the diminutive dragon isn't afraid to help do dishes or whatnot (though they need a soapbox or higher to reach some places). Even with servants, their perspective is that as a community everyone needs to work together to do their fair share.
They will be very eager to share what they know with Hope in exchange for whatever Maxilla's been able to pick up along the way, and will be very protective of their 'adoptive snarl', even though the rest of them aren't true dragons.

Finally got her stated out on the profile. Let me know if you have any questions.
@Cat...sounds about right...all though it could be interesting if he tried to curtail her behavior.
@Bertrand: She's keep flirting in a joking manner. She also tries to set you up with various men.
@Khalaban: I think our characters probably would have run across each other. I mean how many taverns can there Be? I think they definitely could be drinking buddies at the very least.
Maxilla Dragonspite |
Regrets: I have none.

...I was just looking at my character sheet and realized I hadn't bought a whole heckuvalot of gear. I'll try to correct that shortly!

Might not be a bad idea to glance at other people’s sheets and see what we have covered. I’ve got rope and a grappling hook, of course. And don’t worry too much about weight limits—you’ll have a packhobbit that can carry plenty :P
Khalaban |
I have all the things in my profile. It's actually character relevant - Khalaban requires a lot of food and drink, and is somewhat focused on being self-sufficient.
Maxilla Dragonspite |
Okay, think I got it, sorry for delay and confusion.
Maxilla Dragonspite |
I am still here, just not seeing a lot to latch onto.

You will type open bracket dice=Whatever you are rolling]dice and modifiers you are rolling[/dice] when you roll dice. If you do that(adding a bracket in front of the first dice, it should roll things.
Example
Whatever you are rolling: 2d3 ⇒ (2, 3) = 5

It’s Pi Day, so everyone should head down to The Nine-Tuilled Fox for some free pastries!
I just now came up with that as the name of the bakery, btw. Immensely proud of it.
Maxilla Dragonspite |
...ironically, I picked up a Banana Cream PiE at work today...
