Round 6 Recap

The fall of the Knight of Gondor causes the goblin horde to fight with renewed frenzy. That he is almost immediately restored to fighting condition by Gylwinth gives your enemy no pause whatsoever. They have felled a giant. He can be felled again.

Standing side by side behind the front line, Cereidh and Wulfgith split the hearts of two more goblins, a steady rhythm of fetch, nock, draw, loose, kill.

Amalina sends Winter back to guard the archers, but her axe never stops swinging. Another pair of goblins heads are smashed to pulp.

Findegil's eyes open to the sight of Gylwinth singing over him while goblins crush around them. He does a kip-up, his sword arm already in motion, and two goblins are cut down where they stand.

And yet the horde presses inward. Is there an end to them?

Was the entire horde of Mount Gundabad somehow lurking in this narrow tunnel? Amalina thinks to herself as she slips on the growing pool of gore under and around her feet. But before the goblin facing her can take advantage of the opening she brings her blade back around slamming it into the creatures forehead to send it sprawling into the pile of dead.

Gylwinth, you are in melee.

My impression was that we could fire in melee in 5e. What are my options?

You can but at disadvantage. You missed anyway with your attack. You could disengage and get out of melee, or you could draw a melee weapon.

Round 7 Recap

The torches you had to drop in the tunnel when you drew your weapons are sputtering as the expanding pool of blood touches the flames. The horde is most definitely thinned - the chittering and clamoring has dwindled, but the diminishing limit of your visibility makes it impossible to tell how many are still coming.

Under normal circumstances, as with training, Amalina would be exhausted by now, her axe-wielding arm and shoulder tired and sore. But now the woodwomen fights for her very life and those of her companions against desperate odds. There can be no end until she or the enemy lay dead. As she swings, one more is added to the other side of the ledger.

Wulfgith steadily shoots down yet another goblin, and beside her Cereidh does the same, resolute as is her countenance.

Findegil returns to full battle-glory, cutting first one goblin in half and then cleaving the head from another, giving space for Gylwinth to disengage from the front line, step back and fire an arrow from her bow.

The darkness slowly closes in on Amalina, but she feels Winters comforting presence just behind her as well as the sturdy strength of her companions. Knowing it is going to be harder to strike at the onrushing goblins she switches the grip on her axe and uses the little remaining light to simply hold and fend off the attackers while Cereidh uses her bow to put them down.

Using the Dodge Action so that all attacks vs. Amalina are at Disadvantage.

Gylwinth, torches were put out by pooling blood. Amalina had a lantern so that should be able to be relit fairly easily. Maybe it just happened to run out of oil.

How is Amalina holding her lantern?

Female Woodwoman of Wilderland Wanderer (7) | HP: 60/60| AC:16 | Init: +2 | Per: +6(16) | PB: +3 |Winter(Hound) AC: 15 ; HP: 28/28 | Inspiration: Yes

She wields her axe one-handed and doesn't use a shield, so kind of assumed she was holding onto it. Could have also had to put it down. We never really said either way. Could be that one of the goblins hit it hard enough to douse the flame or otherwise put it out.

Obviously, GM forgot Amalina had her lantern lit. While there is nothing saying you can't hold a lantern while fighting, it seems awkward at best. I'll give this a fair chance to ret-con...

Lucky coin:
1d2 ⇒ 11d2 ⇒ 21d2 ⇒ 1

As the fury of battle reaches crescendo, Amalina drops her lamp, but instead of breaking against the floor, it lands upright and miraculously stays lit! Now, hopefully it doesn't get kicked by a goblin before she can pick it up... Oh no! One of the frenzied little monsters knocks it over is it steps into the fight. But it remains burning, casting light and shadow, but you can still see to fight!

The Paizo-diceroller fates decided you may continue to fight on without penalty! And no need to roll vs Corruption. *GM grumbles* Amalina, feel free to change your action.

I'll go ahead and continue to Dodge for the round. But trying to position myself between the goblins and the Sturdy Lantern of Fate. :)

"Amalina! Let me hold the lantern while you fight!" offers Gylwinth.

Round 9 Recap

Gylwinth fires her bow, arresting the advance of one goblin before scooping up Amalina's lantern. Dropping her bow.

Behind her the twin twangs from Cereidh and Wulfgith cut down two more goblins! The archers are three-for-three this round!

While Amalina backs into a defensive stance, Findegil flails at the enemy rushing toward him, but this time his blows are wild and he misses.

As the goblins are cut down, it takes you all a moment to realize that suddenly you can hear your own heavy breathing again. Indeed, the goblins have stopped coming, and only two remain! But where the wall of screaming flesh once stood, now three new foes step into the dim lamp light: three massive orcs!

Orkish:
"Go close, confuse 'em!" shouts the orc in the rear at the last two goblins.

Instead of attacking, the goblins approach Findegil and Amalina from the corner and scream and jump, their shrieks sufficient against your fraid nerves to provide a small Advantage to the big orcs as they bring their spears down upon you!

"Wulfgith, you or I must drag Findegil back and take his place!" Cereidh shouts.

Talking as a free action. I think I have a better to-hit on my broadsword, and I know I have some melee abilities from my class, but Wulfgith can take the front line if you'd like : )

Everyone except Amalina would have their speed reduced to 5' dragging Findegil since he weighs more than their carrying capacity. Also, you have to enter Findegil's space to drag him, and when you leave it you may provoke opportunity attacks. Alternatively, one of you could enter his space and move Findegil out of it, taking his place and not provoking an AOO, but then you'll be in melee and that's the end of your turn. Keeping in mind that these orcs carry whips with reach, someone else would still need to drag Findegil at least another 5' back, and also possibly incur an AOO. So many rules...

Wulfgith, I assume you killed one of the remaining goblins.

"I'll pull him back! Stay in the fight!"

Gylwinth is not fighting. Can she grab a hand, a foot, or a collar and try to slide him back? One hand on the lantern, the other hand pulling? Even if that takes longer, I am behind the line, so I don't need to get in his square to reverse-shove, do I?

Bleeding from numerous cuts, bruised, and battered. Findegil has fallen and the others still badly wounded from the previous fight. Amalina tries one last gambit to get them out of this death trap.

"HOLD!" She shouts to the attacking orcs while maintaining her defensive stance as the last goblin falls. "I would parlay with you." She says between heavy breathes.

"Your chaff is dead. Your troll leaders are dead. You human foils are dead." Her voice is matter of fact. Simple, neither threatening or gloating. "This is the truth. And soon enough you may kill us." Her eyes fix on each of the orcs. "But which of you wishes to die in the process? Which of you is willing to give his life so the others may take our gold or eat our bones? For surely at least one of you will die...perhaps two." She lets her bloody axe and blood soaked body reinforce the statement.

"You've weakened us, tis true. But not enough. Four of us still stand." Winter growls from behind her. "Five of us still stand." Her eyes stare at each of the orcs. "Which of you is willing to die? You?" She points to the one on the left. "Perhaps you?" The one on the right. "Who will charge first, letting the others stand back and take the glory? Which one of you wishes to sacrifice himself?"

She pauses to let them think for a moment. "Or....or you could let us leave. The gold and treasure would be yours. We won't stop you taking it. You could return to...where ever...with riches. Be chiefs. Be warriors of great stature. All of you could have that right now."

She's no idea if her ploy will work, but perhaps it will buy just enough time for the others to ready their bows and deal with Findegil's most life threatening wounds.

Wulfgith and Cereidh cut down the last two goblins. And before the orcs press the attack, Amalina makes her proposal. Somewhat surprisingly, the orcs pause. The two in front look at each other, dumb orc expressions strangle their disgusting faces.

"Yer killed Gorzim?" says the orc in back. He laughs. "No, yer jus' thieves wand'red the wrong cave. Now yer supper!"

Still the two in front wait, long enough for Gylwinth to grab hold of Findegil, and with an assist from Winter, drag the impossibly heavy Knight of Gondor, Tower Shield and all, back behind the archers.

The orc chieftain snaps his whip and kicks the back of one of the frontline orcs. "Kill 'em!"

That orc follows orders, but the other one turns to flee, disappearing into the darkness. The chieftain puts his whip away and levels his spear at Amalina.

You hear a voice from behind you, but when you turn, there is only the empty vault. "Take the shield. Defend your archers."

Cereidh, you get 2 attacks.

Amalina, please update your HP in profile. Should be 13.

Amalina takes a certain satisfaction in seeing one of the orcs flee, but would it be enough? As the orcs charge, she readies herself for one last stand calling her inner reserves to try and take down the big captain. Gylwinth's words fill her with grim determination as she lashes out with her first blow. Another strike going low and deep while Winter rejoins the battle grabbing and pulling at the flesh of the captain's leg.

Gylwinth nods at the immobile warrior and grabs his shield. She takes a deep breath, and steps in front of her friends: "Rally! For Findegil fights with us! I can hear him cheering and cursing these foul orcs!"

Aid (if I can) by providing cover.

You can use the Dodge action to make all attacks against you at Disadvantage. Findegil's Shield of the Citadel gives you +5 AC, so 18!

Is there a way to protect the others instead by providing cover? I don't mind them attacking me for now, as Cereidh and Amalina need all the help they can to stay standing.

Not sure if it counts in anothers hands, but I think the shield gives a +2 AC bonus to allies within 5' as well.
