Wrath of the Righteous campaign
-25 point buy
-Background skills
-Alternate crafting
-VMC and normal multiclassing are both options
-Feats like weapon focus that require you to pick a weapon instead you just have to pick a weapon group like heavy blades etc
-The Wrath Campaign traits would not lock you into a specific archetype... though obviously they lend well to the intended one

Posting using an old alias that I'm resurrecting for this campaign. Aiming to have mechanics and background for wrath version coming in next few days.

I’m here! Not totally set on this character, despite him being done. Might well go for a virtuous bravo Paladin.

Popping in. Still debating choices, though I do love my magic users.

As this is a closed recruitment, I’m going to throw an idea out. Can’t see when else it could happen. A party of paladins.

Given the amount of archetypes and VMC, I could see it work. Dex based? Check. Archer? Check. Healing? Check.

As an example, VMC cleric and hospitaler Paladin. Assuming Cha16, he’d get 10x channels. That’s plenty of party healing on top of the lay on hands.

Need a rogue? Virtuous Bravo is Dex to hit (DMG gained via a feat). VMC rogue for trapfinding and sneak attack. Now a Paladin/Swashbuckler/Rogue

Want to be a bit more arcane? A mind sword Paladin uses telekenisis to fight. Throw in sorcerer/wizard/witch VMC for flavor and abilities.

Archer? Even a vanilla one can do that, but there are some archetypes out there. Can’t see VMC working due to feat intensity though...

Basically, we can make a perfectly viable party that is thematically appropriate. It’ll be a bit harder...but I’m in an all fighter group that is making it work. I think that here pure paladin will be easier due to high saves and self-heals.

Thoughts?

I'm game for it!

Perhaps a Holy Tactician for any higher-int paladin?

Alright! Getting Paladin rolled up. Let’s see.

Alternate SLA: 1d100 ⇒ 100 Roll twice!
1: 1d100 ⇒ 2 Stabilize 3x per day? Alright, looks like I’ll be going Healing Paladin...
2: 1d100 ⇒ 9 +2 Str!

Whether ye all go with the same class or just one or two the mythic paths will further provide differences.

If you've never played a mythic game don't worry too much about it, it wont be coming in straight away.

Indeed! So much can be done with Mythic. Such as legendary items which cast spells (can’t wait for that).

Is that I’m set on Paladin...what I’m thinking is this:

(1) Oath of the Crusade
https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/paladin/archetypes/paizo-pala din-archetypes/oathbound-paladin/oath-of-the-crusade/

Because this is Kenabres.

(2) Hospitaler
https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/paladin/archetypes/paizo-pala din-archetypes/hospitaler/

He has stabilize as an SLA. Trading smites for channels seems appropriate.

(3) VMC Cleric of Sarenrae
Will take revelation domain. So no Perception as class skill until lvl3...but whenever he makes a skill check to see through a disguise or find something that is hidden or concealed, he will gain a +4 sacred bonus on the check. That’s pretty awesome.

And at lvl4 he will have 12x channels per day. Which should cover our out of combat healing needs.

I think it's a cool idea! We need to hear from Marten and Ferocia's players before deciding, of course.

I'm here! Definitely going to give this some thought. I'm tempted by a full paladin party... Hmmm... I'll have to think on it. Of course, if everyone else is in for that I'll hop on the paladin-wagon without further thought! Haha.

Anyway, excited to be here!

Paladins! That’s 2 votes for yes and 2 votes for “yes if everyone else votes yes.”

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I voted yes. But it should be a unanimous vote. :)

(This is Marten.)

I love the idea of an all-Paladin party. Here's proof!

Even before I saw this idea I was considering a paladin. In fact, I was willing to be pretty flexible as to what the party needs, with the only stipulation being that I'm not interested in being another full caster this time.

Woo! By unanimous vote we are going to be a nighmare to everything within the world wound.

Really looking forward to seeing what types of characters people come up with.

Awesome!

Now are we restricting deity choice to Iomedae, or could I choose another god from the pantheon, or a LG empyreal lord?

I'd hope that we don't all have to pick Iomodae as a goddess. Mainly because I'm making a heavy shield build that requires a deity who has heavy shield as a favored weapon.

Besides, everyone having to choose Iomedae would likely cut out options like...

Paladins of Torag (Stonelord Paladins)
Paladins of Irori (Enlightened Paladins)
Paladins of Adabar (Knight of Coins)

Iomedae is cool and all, but I'm going with either Ragathiel or Vildeis as a patron. Rage for the heavens!

Looking at vmc barbarian, sacred servant with rage sub-domain. Though not set in stone.

I'm toying with two builds, and I'm fine with waiting to see what the rest of the party does first, but I want to throw them out there in case there's any issue.

The first is the Enlightened Paladin archetype. If I go for this, I might want to do VMC for monk. This seems redundant, but it lessens the lag of unarmed strike damage (-2 monk level vs. 1/2 monk level) and gains me some other thematic abilities that are worthy of losing feats. I'm not entirely sure about this build, however, as it seems so close to the monk class that it might defeat the purpose of playing in an all-paladin party. I think I'll only consider this option if we have most of the party be heavy armor paladins. I'll consider it with or without the monk VMC, but if anyone takes issue with having it, please go ahead and tell me now.

The second build I'm considering (and this is the way I'm leaning) is a paladin with a barbarian VMC, only I re-color the rage as an intense religious fervor (but mechanically it's the same). I'd like to not worry about spells too much if I go this route, so I'm considering the archetype Warrior of the Holy Light. The Temple Champion is another possibility, but I feel like the trade-offs for this archetype aren't very good.

@Androste: The first Fredric Fulk profile has a bunch of archetypes like warrior of the holy light, might be worth a look.

Yeah, I went through them all. Instead of working. At my new job. Because I'm a great employee.

I like the Warrior of the Holy Light. I don't think that any of the special abilities used by that archetype would interfere with rage.

Enlightened Paladin is one of my favorite archetypes. I see no problem with it personally. It’s an Irorian Paladin through and through.

The only thing about it that I don’t like is sense ki replacing detect evil. It is, hands down, the most pointless ability in pathfinder.

And Andostre about the job...god I resemble that. :p

Fredric was originally for a Diablo II PF game, and I combined Holy Guide, Holy Tactician, and Warrior of the Holy Light for an attempt to represent the Diablo II paladin. It certainly played differently!

The two VMC guides that I found:

The ABC's of VMC's

Amateur Night: A Guide to Variant Multiclassing

I did like the look of VMC Cavalier (Order of the Star) for a 50% boost to channelling and lay on hands.

And VMC Bard could be great for knowledges.

Thanks for the links. Will check them out.

My comment above about it being "too much" was referring to if I took the archetype AND monk VMC.

Agreed.

If I wasn't going healing build, I'd be very tempted to VMC Magus to make a gish type character.

(1) At lvl 3 get arcana. This is really good, especially if your intelligence is half-way decent. Swift action for +1 enchantment bonus to your weapon for 1 minute? Yes please! Especially as it can be used to add enchantments like keen, and as it stacks with the Weapon Bond that paladins get at lvl5.

(2) At lvl 7 get an Arcana. Now, what I would do is this...Flamboyant Arcana (Gain the derring-do and opportune parry and riposte swashbuckler deeds.) and then the lvl 9 feat for Arcane Deed (precise strike). This means at lvl 9 you get +lvl in damage when attacking with a one handed weapon. Or do something like pick up a familiar.

(3) Lvl 11 Spellstrike class feature. Sucks, right? Because paladins don't get Magus spells? Well...we are doing mythic. Take "Legendary Item" and have your item be spellcasting. Choose the Magus class for your spells. And guess what? You can now shocking grasp! If you have the trait Magical Lineage and the metamagic feat, this means 3x times per day you are adding 9d6 electricity damage to your attacks. Not bad.

(4) Lvl 15 and 19 another arcana. Lots of options. Many of them very good.

----

And because this is pretty MAD, as having Int helps you get enchantment bonuses...

Archetype: Enlightened Paladin (Cha to AC)

Feats:
Lvl 1: Divine Fighting Technique Desna-Way of the Shooting Star (Cha to hit and damage with star knives)
Lvl 3: VMC
Lvl 5: ???
Lvl 7: VMC
Lvl 9: Extra Arcana (Precise Strike)

A top of my head theory crafting for this...

Aasimar: +2 Dex +2 Cha

Str (10) Dex (16) Con (14) Int (14) Wis (10) Cha (18)

With a legendary item to cast magus spells, what you can do is this (assuming Cha22 based on the above with Cha advances and mythic, and a +1 starknife)

Swift Action Arcana, add keen to the star knife. Cast shocking grasp. Next turn move up and attack with a smite.

To Hit: +9 (bab) +7 (Cha) + 7 (Smite) + 1 (Enchantment) = +24 to hit (15-20 crit)
Damage: 1d6 (starknife) + 7 (Cha) + 9 (Precise Strike) + 9 (smite) + 1 (Enchantment) + 9d6 (shocking grasp) = 10d6+26 damage.

Even more if it against something like an evil outsider.

Good defense (Dex and Cha to AC), good saves (Paladin), good offense (Cha to hit, level to damage), and plenty of spell casting.

-------

A monk/paladin/magus :)

Does a bit of every class!

Oh dang. I haven't even started to factor in how a mythic path will affect anything I'm considering.

Has anyone nabbed the archer yet? After melting my brain looking at all the archetypes and VMC sorcerer bloodline abilities and cavalier orders, I think it might be nice to just settle into the warm bath that is Divine Hunter.

I like the Magus VMC build, even if shocking grasp loses its usual butt-kicking potential with demon electricity immunity.

@GM: what do you think of the Trap Finder trait from Mummy's Mask? Usually I'd cringe at such a cheese choice, but with an all paladin party it could be a life saver!

No, go for it.

I think I'm settling on a big 2-hander rager paladin.

You really can't have enough of those.

Archer is all open, and very much needed. We could certainly use a few volleys or cold iron arrows. And shared precision could actually be useful in some situations given that we’d all be full BaB and without that feat.

Additional rageadin go!

Oh, and just throwing it out there.

Legendary Items as a mythic ability. Each mythic tier you can pick spellcasting. It gives 5 points. Pick a spell once and it costs the spell level for 1x per day. Pick it again and it becomes 3x per day. Max spell level is your tier. For example:

Mythic Ring of Nethys
* Wizard Spell List
Tier 1 Spellcasting: 3x Magic Missile (2 points) 3x Shield (2 points) 1x Keep Watch (1 point)
Tier 2: 3x Molten Orb (4 points) 1x Unseen Servant (1 point)
Tier 3: 1x Fireball! (3 points) 1x See Invisibility (2 points)
Tier 4: +2x Fireball (3 points) 1x Invisibility (1 point)
Tier 5: 1x Angelic Aspect (5 points)

And the spell levels max out there at lvl5. But still...this becomes a Paladin of Nethys. Throw in something like VMC wizard or sorcerer for flavor. Grab a big two handed weapon with power attack and furious focus. And then go to town, summoning ethereal shields and throwing fireballs around.

—-

I’m putting this out there to show that with mythic legendary items, even a full Paladin party can get up to lvl5 spells in any class. And this can be done with any VMC.

* Want a rageadin? VMC Barbarian and grab buff spells.
* Wanted an oradin? VMC Oracle and grab Oracle spells.
* Paladin of Nethys? See above. :)
* Druidic Paladin sworn to fix the damage done to nature?
* Sneaky Paladin who masters illusion magic?
* Arcane Archer who has a magical bow that casts Gravity Bow, Abundant Ammunition and Flame Arrow?
* A paladin who curses his enemies? VMC witch and pick up witch spells.

There’s more possibilities than I can think of.

I, for example, traded out my Paladin spellcasting for combat feats and warpriest’s sacred weapon damage scaling. I plan to use mythic Legendary Item to get Paladin spellcasting back. :)

———

Final word of warning! Mythic characters can only have 1 Legendary Item. 1 of us will get Radiance, which is a free Legendary Item (never gets spellcasting tbough).

This means that legendary items are a great way to round out a character and to give a lot of flavor. But one of us should plan to get radiance instead.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

You don't have to take VMC... but I can see how it's extra appealing with the party theme.

Also consider the Eldritch Heritage feats to get sorceror bloodline abilities... it's not like you guys wont have enough charisma, the skill focuses require some planning though since they aren't overly popular. If someone wants to gun for this and is going human consider the alternate racial focused study.

Also though they don't make it super clear there is some kind of background about most neutral deities not having paladins with Irori and Abadar being odd... atleast they are LN though.

I enjoy the idea of Abadar having Paladins and Iron Tyrant Antipaladins in his service.

Hey, for Adabar, it’s all about that coin.

Knights of the Coin keep business fair
Tyrant Antipaladins burn down businesses that don’t pay for protection

And then both sides kill each other in the name of the same god!

starting gold: 5d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 3, 4, 2) = 19 x 10

aasimar variant ability?: 1d100 ⇒ 78 +4 racial bonus to resist environmental cold. No, thanks.

Crunch is done. I went with vagabond child to gain Disable Device. It doesn't allow me to disable magical traps, but hopefully those won't be too common. Need to work on backstory.

Sariel, an idea. Just based off of your super high dex.

When you go Mythic, take weapon finesse (dex to hit with light weapons), and make it Mythic (also dex to damage). And for your ability? Limitless Range (Multiply the range increment on all of your ranged and thrown weapons by 5 feet, and these weapons no longer have a maximum range increment for you. )

So let’s say he has a starknife (20ft range, 1d4 damage, x3 Crit)

It’s now 100ft range, and adds your dex to damage. As it starts off at 20 and can keep going...that can add up. Plus it makes him lethal up close too.

Adding tempered champion could further boost damage. Gives warpriest sacred weapon.

Lvls 1-4: 1d6
Lvls 5-9: 1d8
Lvls 10-14: 1d10
Lvls 15-19: 2d6
Lvl 20: 2d8

So in the end? Much more damage than a bow.

Also for any paladins with longswords

Quote:

Inspiring Sword

Your god demonstrates how to turn a longsword into a shining beacon of hope.

Optional Replacement: A paladin who worships such a god can replace a mercy with this initial benefit, even if she doesn’t meets its prerequisites.

Initial Benefit(s): While wielding a longsword, you can perform an impressive display of prowess as a full-round action. All allies within 30 feet who can see your display gain a +2 sacred bonus on attack rolls, saving throws, and skill checks for 1 round + 1 round per 5 points of base attack bonus you have.

Advanced Prerequisite(s): Dazzling Display, Weapon Focus (longsword), base attack bonus +10.

Optional Replacement: A paladin of at least 9th level who worships such a god can replace a mercy with the following advanced benefit, even if she doesn’t meet the benefit’s prerequisites.

Advanced Benefit(s): As a standard action or at the end of a charge, you can make an attack against a foe with a longsword. If you succeed, you grant all allies who can see your attack a +2 sacred bonus on attack rolls, saving throws, and skill checks for 1 minute.

Whoo! Lot of posts already. Just checking the selected builds already.

there's a ranged paladin (divine hunter) who worships Iomedae
there's two melee/barbarian/paladins?
there's a healer paladin?

Is that right?

meloriel wrote:

That's me! My PC has grown up in Kenabres, following in the footsteps of his parents who fought under Iomedae's banner and died in the Fourth Crusade (An orphan. I know.). His aasimar heritage is best explained as a boon upon his parents for their service to the goddess. This gives him an easy hook for Iomedaean worship and a motive to jump into the Fifth Crusade.

Kaeldron, I'll definitely consider weapon finesse when it's mythic time. The Tempered Champion language isn't clear, but it seems that sacred weapon scaling damage only applies to the paladin's deity's favored weapon (or its group). Iomedae's is a longsword (heavy blade), which doesn't help me terribly much.

I'm buying some cold iron arrows and a dagger. Can blunt arrows also be made from cold iron?

Ah right, the deity favored weapon. Right. Which is why finding a deity that worked with my build was so hard. Sorry about that.

Hey, everyone. A thought. At lvl2 we’ll be swimming in healing. At lvl1, not so much. I was able to afford a potion of cure light wounds.

175 gold start. 50 for splint mail, 50 for potion. 30 for shield. 9 for tighter kit. 25 for silver holy symbol. 6 for 3x cold iron chakrams. 5 left.

If anyone else has spare gold, might be worth grabbing a potion as well to keep us going until we all have lay on hands

I'll add my remaining 16gp to the pot.

16 from you, 5 from me. Up to 21 for a second potion.

Also I believe that blunt arrows can be cold iron, it just doubles the price.

Some random die rolls for physical features:

5d100 ⇒ (53, 15, 33, 66, 84) = 251

metallic shadow, unusually colored nails, hair of heatless flames, dramatically echoing voice, and a fox tail.

I think I'll just go with pearly white teeth...

Kaeldron (aasimar): Tempered Champion Hospitaler Paladin Oath of the Crusade VMC Cleric

Healing Paladin (two handed shield, see profile for picture of weapon)

Sariel (aasimar): Divine Hunter Paladin
Archer Paladin

Fredric (aasimar): Holy Guide, Holy Tactician, Warrior of the Holy Light Paladin VMC Barbarian
Rageadin (Longsword, Heavy Shield...two weapon fighting down the line?)

Andostre's paladin (race): ??? Paladin VMC Barbarian?
Rageadin (two handing something)

@Sariel Doare have you considered our lord and saviour Erastil? Or do you need Iomedae for the build... or just greatly prefer them?

Sacred weapon isn't restricted to melee weapons...

"At 1st level, weapons wielded by a warpriest are charged with the power of his faith. In addition to the favored weapon of his deity, the warpriest can designate a weapon as a sacred weapon by selecting that weapon with the Weapon Focus feat; if he has multiple Weapon Focus feats, this ability applies to all of them."

So go Erastil and you will have it for your Longbow which will come in long term... then you take weapon focus (Light Blades) and get a shortsword or something you can finesse and get it for that too.

Or plug the gaps with lots of weapon focus.
