I don't know how viable they are, but other builds to look into:

* something that focuses on summoning
* a skill monkey paladin
* a buffer
* a paladin with a better spell selection (arcane or divine)

Andostre's paladin (race): ???

Unsure. I was considering Oread, but then I remembered that we're probably limited to core, plus aasimmar/tiefling. I'm deciding on a deity to influence race and two handed weapon. I'll probably end up with human, but maybe a half-orc.

Paladin VMC Barbarian?

Correct!

I have small kids, it's almost the weekend, and it might rain all weekend. Despite all of that, my goal is to have the character finished by Sunday night.

Also, Kevin, you're okay with me re-coloring rage to be intense religious fervor but mechanically everything is the same?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Thats fine by me. I guess you could call it a righteous fury... or a zealous hatred...

Which god are you choosing?

If Ragathiel, it opens up the possibility of going sacred servant Paladin VMC Barbarian

Lvl 3: Rage at Con+lvl per day (VMC)
Lvl 11: Rage as a barbarian ar lvl-3, with rounds equal to level (Rage Domain from sacred servant)

With Con14 that is 24 rounds of rage per day.
A lvl11 barbarian has 4+Con+2/lvl after 1. Which would be 26 per day.

So, almost as much rage per day as a full barbarian. Only as a paladin.

The trade off is losing a few uses of smite evil. But if you go Mythic Champion you can use Mythic to smite...

I'm open to Erastil. I picked Iomedae b/c it makes the most sense for this campaign, but you guys have piqued my interest with the tempered champion. I'll sit down later and toy around with it.

Would you allow Divine Hunter and Tempered Chamption to stack, since they both alter divine bond?

They seem fairly compatible so I'd allow it.

A player has contacted me in private requesting we take the foe biting ability from the legendary item options... it is a bit strong to the point of overwhelming bosses in a round with one character alone stacking things potentially. Given that the player has never been shy in dishing out damage I'm giving the matter more consideration but am leaning to agreeing with them.

Of note I'm going to be buffing the opposition a bit when we hit mythic so you guys have more to chew on shall we say. The encounters in this adventure tend to get steam rolled to be honest... I was originally thinking of just three PCs and had no doubt they could handle it as printed!

GM Kevin O'Rourke wrote:

Very happy to hear this!

Oath Against Savagery is one way to get some lethal AOO without great dexterity. Though losing divine grace would hurt!

For Fredric, I'm pretty settled on the following:

Paladin (oath of vengeance) VMC Barbarian

Servant of Ragathiel.

Falchion.

I'll purge the old Fredric profile, which is just being confusing at this stage.

Losing divine grace? Please never say such heresy again :p

I am shamed.

In return, I shall note this glorious, glorious spell.

Litany of Righteousness

I have a feeling this will a lot of use.

You are redeemed. That spell is amazing.

Quote:
Calling down a litany of anathema, you make an evil more susceptible to the attacks of good creatures.

Um, that spell is seriously problematic!

Not sure! I'm the kind of guy who makes up a backstory or concept and then makes the build to support it, assuming it's feasible.

I've switched to Erastil (lol sorry not sorry iomedae, #yolo) and added the tempered champion archetype. This will be a fun ride!

Nice. :)

May want to grab Deadeye Bowman (When you are using a longbow, if only a single creature is providing soft cover to your target, your target does not receive the +4 bonus to AC.)

https://www.d20pfsrd.com/traits/religion-traits/deadeye-bowman/

It’s Erastril only. Otherwise shooting through an ally is -4 to Hit. Precise Shot only gets rid of the -4 for shooting into combat.

As you are out of Traits, might want to look into one of these:

https://www.d20pfsrd.com/traits/drawbacks/

Okay, here's what I've got so far. I still need to work out Traits and Equipment (and thus AC and Damage).

Concept: A half-orc raised by his human father and orc mother. He can trace his lineage back to Sarkoris through his father's side. (The exact area or city can be left up to the GM, if it's helpful.) I took inspiration from the WotR Player's Guide that mentioned that the Kellids of Sarkoris worshiped the Empyreal Lord Pulura before the demon invasion spread. Pulura isn't really a paladin-appropriate deity, so I decided that (with GM approval) the Empyreal Lord Videis (Reference: Link 1, Link 2) was also worshiped by the Kellids of Sarkoris before her worship in the area was wiped out by the demon incursion. That belief and worship was carried by my PC's Kellid forebears as they took refuge in other lands, losing some of their more tribalistic traditions over the generations, but never their faith. My PC's father is a paladin of Vildeis who trained his children in the same tradition. Their mother is an orc shaman who had fled her tribe who also had a strong influence.

My PC has answered the call of the Fifth Mendevian Crusade in the hopes that this crusade will make headway in taking back his ancestral home of Sarkoris. He will also be trying to reintroduce worship of Vildeis to the area, perhaps using the Downtime Rules in some way, such as building a temple. With GM approval, I'd like to have my PC's sister who is a half-orc cleric of Vildeis as an NPC who is also working to reintroduce worship of Vildeis. I'm not assuming that my PC and his sister are the only worshipers of Vildeis participating in the crusade, but they are the only ones with ties to the land that my PC knows about. His parents are still out there somewhere contributing in their own way to the crusade, but his father knows that his orc mother would not be welcome in most civilized cities or camps.

Reading through it now. Assuming you’ll be adding in fate’s favored for the +1 to all luck bonuses?

Also lvl7 you taking leadership? Would be a way to show the spread of Vildeis worship.

No, that's from the Sacred Tattoo racial trait.

Quote:

Strongly considering it!

Just a note the 5th Crusade hasn't started yet. Things are quiet right now... too quiet... by Worldwound standards anyway.

There's always fighting going on even outside the particularly intense crusade periods.

Vildeis seems fine at a glance. Remember demon worship was pretty common in Sarkoris too.

Noted. Will update when I write the background for the alias.

Quote:

True. Also, from what I've read, the Kellid would "import" gods from other cultures and put their own spin on them. That could be how Vildeis was worshiped in Sarkoris, but my guy worships him the way he's most currently know today.

Also, I see that the character sheet portion of my post above says that my paladin is human, but he's definitely a half-orc.

So, certain parts of Paizo.com are blocked at my work. This includes the parts where I access my account preferences, which means I can't create a new alias. I'll finish up during the day and create the alias when I get home tonight.

Kevin, how should we handle starting gold? I don't see people rolling, so is it average gold?

3 people marked this as a favorite.

You should tell your employer that this issue needs to be fixed so that you can close the world wound.

I just got *done* being unemployed!

Yea definitely don't compromise your employment for the worldwound. That would open up an entirely different kind of hellgate.

I rolled for starting wealth in the first page of posts.

Sariel Daore wrote:

Missed that, thanks.

Starting gold: 5d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 2, 3, 5) = 17 x 10 = 170

I know this is closed but I came to look, and I just had to say: This is awesome! Have a great time guys, and if you need an extra paladin I'd be delighted to help out! :)

5d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 5, 3, 4) = 18

Got my roll down then. And thanks for the kind words Nikolaus!

Well, I haven't done all the crunch yet, but I'm making the magical girl of paladins. Haha. I'm going to go with the Chosen One archetype, and probably VMC summoner. I might decide to go sorcerer (celestial) instead. Either way, you can expect a chipper attitude, absurd magical effects featuring hearts, sparkles, and rainbows, and a talking pet. I tried wishing on a star to make Invigorator compatible with chosen one (which would be awesome) but the gods didn't answer my prayers. *insert crocodile tears and some wailing here*

I've got a busy few days, but I should have a character up by the end of the week.

Random side note: My alternate character concept was about as dark and depressing as you can get. lol

Starting Gold: 5d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 3, 6, 6) = 23 x 10 = 230 gp.

meloriel wrote:

Ha ha! This makes me think of Magical Girl Iron Man.

You could name your magic pet Friday!

I like the ‘magical girl paladin’ concept, and look forward to the crunch!

For your familiar, can it take this archetype?

https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/wizard/familiar/familiar-arch etypes/emissary-familiar-archetype/

The emissary is touched by the divine, serving as a font of wisdom and a moral compass for its master.

Seems like a good fit

——

To get a jump on this, we’ll need someone to pick up Radiant, the Paladin sword. It’s a pretty big character boon. Anyone want it?

Right now ‘chosen one’ sounds like a good candidate to me. It would fit the character theme.

I’ll say right now that I’m bowing out of any consideration for radiant. I’ll be using a shield as a weapon. Even thinking about how that would work with radiant is daunting. My character using it would cause too much confusion.

Rolling could be fun and a few have done it so far so lets go with that.

Sorry Nikolaus we're not looking for extras thank you for the interest though!

@ Andostre - Hahahaha! Awesome. I've been looking for an excuse to use this character art for ages, so it's pretty tempting. I feel like she should be wearing a mini skirt though, or something even more absurd. Haha.

@ Kaeldron - My familiar has to be an emissary, which is going to be fun. And I really want it to talk, so it has to be a raven or a thrush. I'm thinking a thrush cause it looks the least dangerous. At higher level it can transform into it's 'true' form of any outsider on the improved familiar list. I haven't finished narrowing it down yet, but I like the personality of a caypup, so I'll probably tie her to Cayden Cailean and the little thrush can boast all the time about it's amazing martial prowess.

As for the snazzy paladin sword: that sounds like a blast. Yes? Interested? Admittedly, I don't know the details so I can't say objectively who it would be best for. I'm willing to leave that up to the GM and those of us who do know. I will be using a sword as my main weapon, if that helps you guys decide. Haha. Do we have to worship Iomedae for it?

It is a Longsword. When a paladin picks it up it changes to your deity’s favored weapon. Without spoiling anything else, it levels up with you. I’ve only done the first part of the AP, so that’s all I’ve experienced. I’ve been told that it gets very snazzy powers.

Paizo Employee Organized Play Line Developer

Very cool!

Don't get hung up on the longsword part, we can tweak things to another suitable melee weapon.

Paizo Employee Organized Play Line Developer

So, question.

A level one paladin who uses a scroll of cure light wounds and has the necessary charisma score to cast it. All they need to do is make a caster level check (DC = scroll’s caster level + 1) to cast the spell successfully, because caster level is lower than the scroll spell’s caster level. If they fail, they must make a DC 5 Wisdom check to avoid a scroll mishap. Yes? OR, because they don't have spells yet, even though the spell is on their spell list do they need to make the DC 21 UMD check to activate the scroll first?

I feel like they only need the CL check, but I've honestly never played a paladin before so I figured I should check.

On a similar note, is anyone considering pumping UMD for wands?

Paizo Employee Organized Play Line Developer

I am for sure. I want her to be good with magical objects.

RAW you don't have a caster level or the spell list just yet. However for those who aren't losing their caster level due to archetype lets fudge it slightly and go with option A.

*happy dance*

Meloriel here, reporting for duty!

I know paladins of Cayden Cailean are more than a little rare, but I made one anyway. She's going to be so much fun. In the end she turned out a human paladin (chosen one) of Cayden Cailean, VMC sorcerer (celestial bloodline).

2 people marked this as a favorite.

And her magical, drunken thrush!

This is Andostre/Marten. Crunch has been done for a couple days, but I still need to flesh out the background I gave earlier. The challenge for me will be trying to be succinct, because I've got this whole head-cannon about his parents and siblings that really isn't that important for his character sheet.

But I'm essentially ready to go.

I LOLd a few times reading Claire. Well done!

Very well written Claire!

Are you going for the blade and tankard feat chain?

“Initial Benefit: You can wield a tankard (or mug) as a weapon, treating it in all ways as a light mace appropriate for your size. If you engage in two-weapon fighting with a rapier or light weapon in one hand and a tankard in the other, you can drink a potion or other liquid from the tankard or attempt to toss liquid from the tankard as a dirty trickAPG combat maneuver (such as to blind a foe) in place of attacking with it. You do not provoke attacks of opportunity for attempting a dirty trick maneuver with a tankard.”

Thanks!

I contemplated both two weapon fighting and Cayden's divine fighting style, but decided against it. TWF is a little feat heavy for my liking if I'm going VMC, and I didn't want to run a super high Dex character. I also didn't think Claire would be into the dirty tricks. I could still go with the tankard as a mace even without the dirty tricks but I decided against it. I'm such a sucker for rapiers that I figured I wouldn't use it much. I was tempted, though! Who doesn't want to toss booze in someone's face while fighting?!? Haha.

Speaking of which: I forgot to buy some liquor! I'll have to add it to my inventory before we start. Haha.

Can we take a drawback for a third trait? I'd love to get Acrobatics as a class skill.

Something Wicked wrote:

I sure hope so. I used that for Perception as a class skill (still can’t believe paladins don’t get it)

Also Davok could get Fate’s Favored (+1 Fort, Ref and Will, well worth a trait for him)

Okay I think I'm complete. I took a drawback (Impatient) and took Reckless as a trait to obtain Acrobatics as a class skill. I dropped K(religion) and K(nobility) for now to put a rank in Acrobatics and Sleight of Hand. I guess that makes me the rogue paladin :). I also inserted a small background.

Is there an estimated start date for the campaign, or are we just waiting for everyone to wrap up?

I picked the deity Mazludeh because I found a picture of a shield with a blade attached to it and made a build around that. But now, I found this...

“If a feat requires choosing a weapon or weapon group, the tempered champion must choose her deity’s favored weapon, or its group. The tempered champion must meet the feat’s prerequisites, but treats her tempered champion levels as fighter levels for this purpose.

In addition, the 4th-level tempered champion gains the increased base weapon damage of the warpriest’s sacred weapon ability at her tempered champion level.”

“In addition to the favored weapon of his deity, the warpriest can designate a weapon as a sacred weapon by selecting that weapon with the Weapon Focus feat; if he has multiple Weapon Focus feats, this ability applies to all of them.”

By my reading this should let me choose a deity with the close weapon group, and the shield will still work. So for RP and background, it frees me up. As such, I’m switching the deity to Korada. It just feels more Paladin-like, especially for a healing Paladin. And it changes nothing mechanically.

Anyways...that is all. Was just happy to have figured this out.

Taking a drawback is alright.

We don't have a start date but lets say Friday 28th, possibly sooner if everyone has finalised things.
