Mark Seifter just answered this on the official Paizo Twitch. You just need to beat the Hardness to make a Dent. Twice the Hardness, two Dents in a single blow. Damage is NOT supposed to be subtracted with Hardness first. So there you go, it's official now.

I wish they would post these clarifications on the Blog or in a Thread. I don't have the time or inclination to scour videos for rules clarifications I'll still have to transcribe into a useful format.

The problem is I just watched that video and he didn't clarify anything about that. He basically just stated what the rules already say in the book. So it's still apparently unknown EXACTLY how they work.

didn't jason in the even MORE recent stream played it with shield subtracting the damage first and then applying the remaining damage?

The thing is that in regards to shield block the attack is targeting you so the rules seem to be different because of the ability. With shield block if you block the shield absorbs the damage for you instead of you taking it. So the hardness is more changed to DR for you instead of the shield.

BUT how does this work with unattended objects? Like a door for instance? Does it reduce the damage first? Because if it doesn't then that needs to errata to take that sentence out as it doesn't apply to anything at all.

Thankfully the errate took the first step to clearing that issue. Items reduce damage by their hardness is gone.

Still a few steps to go, but independent of rulings my Rogue will be quicker getting that door open with his rapier than his lockpicks, that's for sure. With the old time AC of 5 for unattended objects, your typical AC18 rapier wielding rogue has a 55% Chance of critting that door for 4D6+D8+8 damage, making it trivial to not only dent, but outright destroy that door with one attack. Oh, the visuals...

even that is a houserule though.

we don't even know if we can "crit" an object since no mention of an attack/ac against it is given.

Hence my initial post, and my mention of the missing clarification steps. You are right that currently, there is no defined way how to damage objects beyond Shields and some monster abilities.

Cantriped pointed out that there's a few references to a "Smash" action that doesn't seem to exist currently in the rules as written. "Strike" very explicitly says you target a creature. I am guessing you won't need to roll a hit to "Smash" an object and just roll damage instead, but this needs to be clarified.

Unattended objects don't have AC afaik so critting them is out of the question
