Three More to Go!

Friday, September 16, 2016

By my count, we've got 11 figures left to preview for November's Deadly Foes set of Pathfinder Battles prepainted plastic gaming figures. I've decided to break down those figures over three different previews in the coming weeks, with this being the first of the "home stretch." After that, I have piles and piles of even newer stuff to show off, but that's getting a bit ahead of myself. Some of my favorite figures in Deadly Foes have yet to make their preview debut, so before we get to 2017 stuff, let's take a breath and appreciate the wonders yet to come in 2016.

First up this week is the Sewer Beast, a beloved (and re-named) creature from the very first Pathfinder RPG Bestiary! This popular denizen of dungeons and sewers alike makes his Pathfinder Battles debut with art inspired by Wayne Reynolds's cover of Pathfinder Adventure Path #7: Edge of Anarchy, which we're reprinting next month as part of the incredible Curse of the Crimson Throne Adventure Path hardcover. Those of you playing that epic campaign will find this a most helpful miniature indeed, as will anyone whose adventures routinely take them to the smellier part of a city's infrastructure. My favorite part of this figure are the eyestalks, complete with their very own tampo'd eyes. Spooky! The Sewer Beast is a Large, uncommon figure.

Gamers have been asking for proteans in Pathfinder Battles for ages, and I'm happy to report that Deadly Foes gives us our first opportunity to answer those prayers directly, and in the best possible way! Again using classic Wayne Reynolds Pathfinder art as inspiration (this time the cover of The Great Beyond), WizKids's talented digital artists have brought this creature—completely original to Pathfinder—to three glorious dimensions. I'm thrilled with the complex color guide (seven different colors on this one!), and overall the final figure is just delightful to drop on the table. There will definitely be more proteans to come, but we had to begin with the one that started it all! The Keketar Protean is a Large, rare figure.

Just last week, in the FANTASTIC and VERY HELPFUL thread of minis suggestions that accompanied the weekly preview blog (we're seriously stealing at least a dozen figure ideas from that thread), at least one poster mentioned the need for regular old pillars as dungeon dressing in a future Pathfinder Battles set. While I'm not sure the glowing runes on this Arcane Pillar count as a "regular" pillar (you'll have to wait for the NEXT set for that!), I can deliver a pillar of some kind much sooner than many of you probably anticipated. With glowing runes along one side, the Arcane Pillar makes a versatile piece that can be used in just about any dungeon encounter. I like the idea of running a gauntlet of three sets of these, in which crossing the plane of the inward-facing runes causes some kind of horrific magical effect. Fun! The Arcane Pillar is a randomly inserted dungeon dressing piece that takes the place of an uncommon figure. While collation is never guaranteed, the idea is that each case should include at least one of them.

And that's it for this week, leaving us two more four-figure previews for Deadly Foes in the weeks to come.

Feel free to keep posting figure suggestions to the comments. Mike and I read them assiduously and will definitely consider them for the setlist we're currently building.

Thanks again for your interest in and support of the Pathfinder Battles. It's a labor of love for everyone involved, and your support makes it possible.

See you next week!

Otyugh - great!

Keketar - very cool!

Arcane Pillar - nice and useful.
Is it large or medium?

Thanks, Erik & Mike!

We are now missing:

-1 large uncommon - has to be a Bone Devil ;-)

-2 medium rares (one being "Aram Goldenheart"/Aasimar Paladin, the other James Jacobs PC Shensen or an Astral Deva/Messanger Angel?)

-1 large rare (please let it be the Planetar)

-4 dressing pieces

Glad to see another otyugh. They seem to show up a lot in adventures, plus make a pretty good "thing with tentacles" stand-in.

I had to laugh out loud when I saw the otyugh. After last week with so many people asking I can just see Erik sitting at his desk with a wry smile knowing this was coming. Well played sir.

Three amazing minis. The protean has the possibility to be the standout in the set. Fantastic!

While I would indeed like a good old pillar I'm very happy with the arcane one. So many ways to use it. Very exciting set

I added a suggestion for a great hydra to last weeks blog while I waited impatiently for this one.

Great stuff! ^_^

Not only an Otyugh, but an uncommon one at that. I'm looking forward to gathering several.

The Protean looks fantastic, but I'm equally excited for the rune Pillar. To bad that can't be a common piece.

Three wins for this preview.

The portents are right and the planets are aligned!

All three seem like great picks, though as someone who has the old otyughs, I'm most excited about the Protean. I've wanted one ever since it showed up in one of the Legacy of Fire adventures!

Another thing that occurred to me to ask for isn't exactly another mini, but: in one of their recent Heroclix sets, Wizkids has made some minis with a ring of transparent plastic around the base to create energy fields, a ring of water, and stuff like that. Why not make a few different ones like that that a Medium-sized mini could sit inside of, so that it could become a fire shield spell or something like that? They could be really useful as cool status markers too. And I really do think it would be great to have various transparent minis for spell effects: hand spells, wall spells, sphere spells, a floating disc, a spectral hand, black tentacles, and spiritual weapons (there are already good ones for an axe and hammer in the Heroclix War of Light series, and a spiritual sword would make my cleric PC's happy, as well as being usable for a Mordenkainen's -- sorry, mage's -- sword). This could be a cool use of dressing pieces.

Other stuff I'd still love:
-- Others have asked for daemons, and I agree, but the piscodaemon is probably highest on my list, closely followed by the ceustodaemon.
-- It would be great to have a female elf druid mini. In my experience, that's one of the most commonly chosen PC archetypes, and I don't think one has been done as a prepaint since the Warden of the Wood way back in WotC's War of the Dragon Queen set. [Edit: they also did one in their Player Handbook Heroes series a bit more recently, but that one's very expensive.] You've got nice art for one, too, the one with the plant companion that I think you did for Reaper already. Can you just do that one in plastic?
-- A couple rank-and-file archers w/ longbows would be helpful. It's getting surprisingly hard to find cheap archers in prepaints. Some of the old standbys, like the old WotC Free League Rangers, Sharn Redcloaks, Elf Warriors, and a couple of different Elf Archers have become relatively scarce and more expensive. If done right, they can be useful as PC's, bandits, soldiers, guards, etc., and are a fantasy staple that deserves to be better represented.
-- There are some other minis you've had Reaper make in metal that would be great as prepaints. Lady Moray (from Kingmaker) would make a big splash as a prepaint, and would be very popular as a PC. Brother of the Seal would add a monk mini. Kulgara, the half-orc w/ the chainsaw, is too cool for words. The Vampire Hunter is just a great sculpt. The Nidalese Rogue would be a popular PC mini, as would the Arcanamirum Wizard. Kassata Lewyn is a great sculpt. Your Herald of Razmir is practically a necessity, with a promo repaint in a different robe and mask. Other probable hits: Technic League Captain, Jigeke the Exile, Ecchardian Drovenge (could use more tieflings in general), Plague Doctor (maybe a no-brainer with CotCT getting a re-release?), Blackjack (again for CotCT), and Dorella Kreeg (finally a female ogre!) So many great minis you already have sculpts for!

Dark Archive

+1 for the Reaper metal minis as plastic versions!
The "Technic League Captain" in Deadly Foes seems to be an exact adaptation.

I have just seen the color renders of the "Pathfinder: Deep Cuts" unpainted line coming out in january and from the looks of them, quite a few could make it into the next PFB set in a painted version - i'm fairly sure the D&D ones will show up in Monster Menagerie 2!

Release date for the next Pathfinder Battles set should be april or may 2017 - current release date for MM2 is june 2017, but that could become july 2017.

I am fairly certain that we won't have to wait 10 months for the next set and that Wizkids will release a Pathfinder set after Deadly Foes and before the next D&D set (MM2). Good times. :-)

Dark Archive

Here is the link to the Pathfinder Deep Cuts unpainted minis:

http://wizkids.com/deep-cuts-unpainted/

When i look at the "color renders", i notice that only two of them look exactly (?) like ones from "Pathfinder Battles" sets:

- Familiars "Biter" - Iconic Heroes Box 2 (with addes earth mound)
- Hell Hound 1 - Deadly Foes

The others look similiar, but are in fact different poses.

Especially the Bat familiar and the Unicorn look cool.

The half-orc female barbarian could be the one Erik teased for the next set.

No word yet on the unpainted "dressing pieces" line.

Awesome! This is a really cool piece.

Great idea.

So, one per case x six pillars to run the gauntlet x ($399.99 + $30 shipping per case) = $2,579.94. That's way out of my budget.

Unfortunately a great piece with a crappy distribution. I do expect to see this as a repaint, maybe even right away like the beds in the last set. I'll look for them on the secondary market, I'm guessing for around $12 to $15. Expensive for multiple of a simple mini, but in the range of consideration.

Exactly. Honestly, the way dungeon dressing minis are being handled is frustrating (almost) everyone. People who don't want them are frustrated because they happen at all. People who do want them are frustrated because they're exactly the sorts of things that you want in large quantities, but they're effectively one-per-case.

There's money being left on the floor while customers are annoyed.

I'm not sure what the answer here is, but maybe something like a dressing-specific "kit". 6 molds, 5 of each inside. Most of these are pretty simple so ideally the average price could stay in the $5 realm, making such a kit $150. I could see some people buying two (or more) kits. No case-incentive, no rares, just a bunch of molds that are useful in bulk but not overly complicated to make.

It's just really hard to get excited over - for instance - this very nice pillar when I know I'd be looking to make scenes with upwards of a dozen of them, and know that it's never going to happen because of the scarcity of what is just a pillar. Sculpting on this took nowhere near the time a monster/NPC/PC would, and there appear to be a total of three paint steps (base, inject brown runes, inject blue runes), with no difficult angles or micro detail (face/eyes/hands) needing special handling.

Sigh. The dressing experiment is good, but frustrating.

Dark Archive

Seconding the need for more of the dressings. I too would like the pillar but one is pretty much useless and will spend most of its time in a tray somewhere. Buying the five or six that would make them useful is far too expensive. I realize not everyone likes the dressing stuff and that's certainly their right but they are far too scarce to be useful at their current commonality. Please consider a smaller stand alone set of dressings in the future, it would not need to be as large as a regular set and if the right pieces were chosen more commons than usual would be fine or two or three paint variations could come into play. A 24 figure set with lots of common useful items would make a great start and could even include reprints of some of the items we have already had in previous sets. I for one still don't have enough beds, carts, wagons, crates or barrels. Something to think about.

Otyugh!!!!!!

That is all.

Something bugs me about the otyugh pair of images. Either the forward facing or backward facing image is reversed. Not a big deal, over-all. But just something that annoys my mind when I am looking at the pictures. However, the more I see the front picture, the more I like the detail that went into the tentacles. The eyes are awesome, being stamped and all, but even the placement of the 'fingernails' on the other two tentacles is a fantastic attention to detail. I'm quite glad I can expect more than one of these filthy creatures to be included in a case!

Berk the Black wrote:

I don't think that's true at all. The otyugh is nearly symmetrical. The main difference is that the left tentacle (our left, seen from the front) is lower and pointed at a 45-degree angle relative to the ground while the right tentacle is in high-five position. If you then look at the back-facing picture, that positioning is maintained. The tentacle on the right is at a 45-degree angle and the tentacle on the left is in a high-five.

I think Berk the Black has spotted something. The single curve tentacle is on the left in both views. The curvy "W" tentacle is on the right in both views. Either way, it's still a cool looking mini.

(I could be wrong. There seems to be some blending of colors.)

The central stalk is bending to our right with the end pointed left in both views as well. One image is definitely reversed from the final orientation chosen. Not a big deal. The great thing about renders is it allows for experimenting on which orientation has the better aesthetics.

I pretty certain Erik would rather have spoiler end this for us.

I'd liked to see the medium hellhounds in this set, love the large one we are getting, would just like the medium to match. I do like the shafted star version, don't get me wrong, but I also like some uniform I among my minis. Most of those Marco use transparency in the render that can't make it to the final unpainted version. That's very disappointing. Plus I really loathe the little bits of ground beneath most of them, I'd rather a flat featureless base. This added little bit of "base scenery" is almost enough to stop me buying these.

I suspect our last large rare in this set may well be the bone devil, it would be a complex sculpt, hopefully with transparent insectile wings. Paint scheme could also be complex, doesn't need to be the simple bone/off white we see, the very first one had a few extra shades which really made it pop.

Look again; both outside tentacles do W-curves.

When looking at the rear image, the (our) left tentacle starts right at the base of the three back-spikes, and is heading back away from its head. It then curves up and to the left, starting roughly at the butt (curve #1). Then it goes up to just beside the back-spikes and curves backwards again (curve #2). It heads back for a while then curves up (curve #3).

When looking at the rear image, the (our) right tentacle starts right at the base of the back-spikes and is heading back away from its head. It then curves mostly away from the main body (curve #1). Then it goes to the side for a while before heading away from the body again (curve #2). It heads away for a while then curves forward somewhat (curve #3).

Again, the creature's left tentacle ends in an upright attitude in both images while the creature's right tentacle ends at a much lower angle in both images.

Anguish has the right of it. Both tentacles do the w shaped bend. Neither of the pictures is inverted. I'm very excited for this set, also very excited to see what the 'piles and piles' of other stuff is.

I'd also like to second whoever suggested effects like the clix effects bases you get for heroclix. A few made for medium minis for pathfinder would be really awesome for spell effects.

Reaper and a few other companies have some spell efects. Reaper has transparent plastic walls for fire and ice walls. A company called Valiant Enterprises has a few in metal as well including a magic hand effect. I don't know of anyone making aura effects and really like that idea

There is supposed to be an unpainted line of dressing pieces forthcoming from Wizkids in addition to the "Deep Cuts" and D&D ones.

A lot of dressing pieces also function unpainted or are easy to paint even for beginners - table, chair, barrel etc.
I hope we will get info on these soon.
I also hope that the unpainted pieces get phased into later sets of the "blind box" releases - with D&D i absolutely expect this to happen.
That way we could get them in both versions and Wizkids can save money by using the molds double.

Erik, a quick question:

Can we also wish for HUGE miniatures (now that Wizkids is doing them) in the next set or is it still to early for that?

I guess the later is true (for the time being), but i notice a lot of people do this, probably without realizing that it hasn´t being possible so far.

Pathfinder Battles did it in "Rise of the Runelords", with the "Dragon Evolution" sets and "Reign of Winter Encounter Pack" and you are doing it again with the Deadly Foes case incentive promo, which i applaud you for doing.

But there are still a lot of HUGE creatures missing and these see much more table time than GARGANTUAN or COLOSSAL creatures.

Thank you for your time.

Hey all, I love the dungeon dressings as well as some of you but I can get those through other sources as well. I don't think I should name any here for the sights sake, but if you look around on the net you'll easily find some molds that you can buy pretty cheap that can use plaster and can be poured at a kitchen table setup. Especially for those things you want several of, like columns.

Just saying. It would be much more expensive for them to make and you to buy if it doesn't sell well.

Ok, I think I can make sense out of the Otyugh image now. I just wasn't seeing it for the longest time.

On a different note, I'm still hoping we get a hobgoblin leader in this set. I forgot if the discussion indicated there was at least one more or if that was just wishful thinking? With only two rare mediums left, it's looking kind of dicey whether we will get one.

Well said, and several people including me have just decided that getting 3+ of any of those items to keep their scenes alike is just impossible unless your buying these at 15.00-20.00 a pop on the second market.

if you want several beds, chests, and burning urns your going to spend at least +80.00 if you can even find them...
