Druid + companion + teamwork feats

Is there any reason why a druid (wildshaped or not) and his animal companion shouldn't be allowed to use teamwork feats such as Lookout and Precise Strike together?

I rather like the use of the latter with claw/claw/bite attacks.

Would the animal companion need an intelligence of 3 to use these feats?

I also would like to know the answer to this.

I'd say yes to Int 3, other than that I see no reason why it shouldn't work.

You can bring the critters int to 3 to open up any feat they're physically capable of doing. Until then they're limited to a very specific list of feats under animal companions in the PHB: the critter just isn't smart enough to learn how to work with you until then.

Working in close tandem with your animal companion and synergizing your abilities is also very thematic.

You can get the three int by

-Plopping a headband on the critter (assuming its not pfs)
-At level 4 you can raise 1 of its stats, raise its int, and then at level 5 get the teamwork feat
-If you're a human you can trade your racial feat for Eye for talent in the apg. Lets you give +2 to an animals stat and you can pick int.

It's a sad day when the druids pet is smarter than the party's half-orc barbarian.

I agree.

I just thought that two of you (you as bear + your bear companion) doing +1d6 per hit (six hits possible) on a flanked opponent was rather powerful for the cost of one feat (Precise Strike).

Still.

And did I dream this, or does your companion go on your initiative, or its own?

technically the critter goes on its own, but most DM's just have the animal companion act with its owner simply to avoid having to remember an extra slot in the initiative order.

The only time i wouldn't do that is if you had a huge, slow pet and an owner gaming the system with a really high init modifier on the druid.

The precise combat combo is technically 2 feats, one of yours and one of the companions. Forget bears though, dueling velociraptors for 4 attacks for you and 5 on the companion is where its at.

Its a happy day. It means the critter is smart enough to know when to retreat!

And as long as it isn't PFS play I suggest looking into doing Large Cat with Rhino Hide armor. Pounce+Full Attack+Precise Strike+Rake+Rhino Hide Armor=Furry ball of death!

It's two feats, really: one for the druid, one for the companion. And the feat cost is exactly the same if two characters take precise strike. Where the power balance breaks is that precise strike does the extra damage for every hit, which makes it attractive for characters with multiple hits in a round, which aren't all that common at lower levels. A wild-formed druid, an animal companion, a flurrying monk, or any hasted character do qualify, though.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Don't forget to throw Outflank into the mix. Something gets flanked, then it dies.

I would have thought bear was better than velociraptor until 7th level.

And just to finish this line of thought, you and your animal companion could take:

1) Lookout
3) Precise Strike
5) Escape Route
7) Outflank

- then maybe at level (9) take Natural Spell for yourself and something else for Dino.

You might also want to check out The Spell-less Ranger ...

Although obviously ranger specific, there are a bunch of new animal companion feats, including some specifically designed to make the character (ranger or druid) and his animal companion better able to work and fight together, use teamwork feats etc.

There's also an animal companion character sheet which can be used by any character with an animal companion.
