Bard Masterpiece Question

Rules Questions

I just had a quick question, me and my play group couldn't figure it out. Can a Skald have a bard masterpiece and a raging song active at the same time? Because the raging song is activated as a standard action and continued as a free action. The bardic masterpiece
Battle Song of the People’s Revolt is started by a standard action and you spend one round of bardic performance a round to continue it, so could I use these at the same time?

Skalds (and their Inspire Rage) interact the same with Masterpieces as Bard do. Exactly how they (Bards) do so is (and has been) a somewhat hot FAQ request topic for a LONG time. Reigning opinion (even if unpopular), and strictest reading, is that they both count as performances and only one is active at a time (barring special class features/spells that bypass this normal rule).

To answer your second question, no. Activating your bardic performance/inspire rage will end the Battle Song of the People's Revolt. I suggest using the 4th level Spell "Virtuouso Performance" to enable both to be active.

Are you trying for Amplified Rage, by chance?

Yup! Sure am. I wanted to pick that masterpiece to give everyone the amplfied rage feat, then double the morale bonus with moment of greatness or something.

Ah, I thought so. I toyed around with that concept to great lengths. In the end, I found the best way to make use of it was to either use the VMC rules (variant multiclass from the Unchained book) to pick up the Cavalier Tactician ability, or delegate the sharing of the Amplified Rage feat (and taking of Warleader's Rage feat) to another character, preferably a Rage Domain Inquisitor (with VMC Cavalier). Mostly because of solo tactics, but any class that gets a Rage ability with the ability to share a teamwork feat will suffice.

Depends on your group composition. Either way, the 4th level Bard Spell Virtuoso Performance is a "solution", if only a higher level one.

I am not at all sure that there is any dominant opinion on the matter. Whenever there is an argument on the net without a HUGE preponderence of opinion on one side of the argument I think it is far more accurate to say that no real consensus exists and leave it at that.

My memory of that thread is that there were lots of people making impassioned and reasonable arguments on BOTH sides.

That is why I added the qualifier "and strictest reading' to my statement. Until we get an actual FAQ or official response, we have to treat them all as performances unless the Masterpiece itself states otherwise (some do). In our home games, that changes dramatically and will experience heavy table variation.

Regardless, I am not here to argue the point and I won't. I've already determined how to handle the issue in my games and they definitely do not use the strictest reading.

Yeah, "reigning opinion" seems accurate enough, but there's definitely not a consensus.

Reigning opinion was they should have answered it but won't. Past that, I think it was as civilized a discussion as could be hoped for.

Given that PF1E is on its way out, I wouldn't be surprised if they leave the FAQ unanswered.

Your table will have to make a decision/ruling. Our group tends to be more permissive/"rule of cool" and allow it (though no one's taken advantage - our Skald chose to go the VMC Cavalier route, above).

Masterpieces interact differently. In the case of the Battle Song of the People's Revolt, the description does call for ongoing performances, round by round. This would interfere with maintaining another performance, unless the PC in question has a way to playing two performances at once - which there are a few.
