Pretty sure if it does double of your shields hardness, you get hit with two dents, so if you were one dent from broken/two dents from destroyed and you blocked that big an attack, it would be gone...but you'd be choosing to block that damage, so you'd have to be desperate enough to risk your shield, probably to prevent death.
Yeah, I just reread the bit from one of the preview sheets up at ENworld. If it takes more than the hardness it gets one dent, double the hardness in one hit two dents (doesn't seem to go higher so three times the hardness is still two dents apparently). Breaks on a second dent but can be repaired and is destroyed with three dents. So you get one good block for sure. Once you've got a dent there's a risk of destroying the shield outright on a big hit. But you are still totally in control of when you risk this or not, you can use the AC boost with no risk. And the reaction triggers when you actually get hit and possibly after damage has been rolled. If that's the case then you know ahead of time if you're going to break or destroy your shield, so it's all up to you if you want to sacrifice it to prevent potentially lethal damage.
Certainly something to look at during the test to see if they break too much, but it looks like you're in control the whole time.
