bolding mine actually, this is not true.

From the CRB, PG 218. second paragraph under the heading Preparing Wizard Spells (so it likely applies to any spellcasters who prepare spells like a Wizard)...
Rest: To prepare his daily spells, a wizard must first sleep for 8 hours. The wizard does not have to slumber for every minute of the time, but he must refrain from movement, combat, spellcasting, skill use, conversation, or any other fairly demanding physical or mental task during the rest period. If his rest is interrupted, each interruption adds 1 hour to the total amount of time he has to rest in order to clear his mind, and he must have at least 1 hour of uninterrupted rest immediately prior to preparing his spells. If the character does not need to sleep for some reason, he still must have 8 hours of restful calm before preparing any spells..

Yeah, this is why my wizard acted the way he did and the party appreciated it. I remember sessions where the party would get upset that the wizard got up and threw a magic missile at something that the characters on watch could of handled by themselves, since it meant we either now had to rest even longer or the wizard wouldn't get their spells back making them less useful the next day.

Pathfinder made things easier by only requiring an extra hour per interruption, it used to be you had to get 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep with no exceptions, meaning if the wizard got up at hour 6 to "help" with combat the party would now have to rest for another 8 hours if they wanted the wizard to be useful. Under such conditions the wizard sleeping though combat is being a team player. Kicking the wizard out for that is like kicking the rogue out of the party because he keeps wandering ahead of the party in order to look for traps.
