Are the forums a customized package or home grown? Would be nice to be able to contribute some code to the project if possible, like adding markdown support to the feedback text boxes.

Start a repo. We'll develop in parallel and then one day in the future Paizo can use our stuff.

We appreciate the enthusiasm to want to contribute to the forum features on paizo.com! But as Vic mentioned, the features are pretty unique to our website and may need to change based on various business needs and wants (some of which users don't really see, which makes it pretty difficult for someone to contribute to). It is unlikely that we'll be utilizing GitHub in the future.
