GM Ancalima's Recruitment for the Murder's Mark Module

Recruitment

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Everyone in the fishing town of Ilsurian is excited when the legendary Umbra Carnival rolls into town—even if the show is run by members of the much-maligned Varisian ethnic group. With strange and exotic beasts, scandalous performances, games of chance, and all the other fun of a traveling fair, who could resist such an opportunity for entertainment? Unfortunately for both the town and the circus, entertainment isn’t the only opportunity the carnival presents…

Welcome to the recruitment thread for GM Ancalima’s Murder’s Mark! This is a entertaining little module that deals with a mysterious murder, mob justice and racial tensions between Chelaxians and Varisians.

Character Creation Rules

Expand Character Creation Rules:
  • Starting level: 1st
  • Starting wealth: Average for class
  • Ability Scores: 20 point buy
  • Hit Points: Max at 1st level
  • Race: Any. If your character is human, please mention their Golarian ethnicity. Chelaxian and Varisian will be the most relevant for this module, but other ethnicities are perfectly acceptable (just be sure to explain how your character wound up in the region).
  • Alignment: Any non-evil
  • Traits: 2 Traits. No Drawbacks. Traits should have a clear connection to the character’s background, motivation or personality.
  • Restrictions: No 3rd Party material. Summoners must use the Unchained version.
  • Additional Rules: We will be using background skills.

Note about Formatting: Here is an example of how I like to format character sheets for PbB games. This exact format is not required. However, presenting your application in a way that is easy to read will make my life a lot easier and thus increase your chances of being selected.

Background Requirements

Expand Background Requirements:
  • Abridged 10 Minute Background:
Step 1: Write at least 5 concept elements that you feel are important to your image of the character. These can be a concept overview, a list of important life events, a physical description, a personality profile...whatever you need to get an image in your mind.
Step 2: What is your character’s goal or motivation? Why are they going to end up on an adventure?
Step 3: Describe at least 3 mannerisms, or quirks that your character has. They don't have to be elaborate, but they should provide some context and flavor.

  • Why is your Character in Illsurian? - Are they a native? If not, did they come specifically for the Umbra Carnival or are they in town for some other reason? The answer to this question can be nested into your 5 concept elements or it can be separated out into its own section. However, please make sure to include the answer somewhere in your submission.

  • RP Sample: Please provide a link to two posts from previous games you have played in, one for in combat roleplaying and one for out of combat roleplaying. First time players may instead write up RP samples for the character they are submitting. Check out
DH's Guide to Play By Post gaming
for more guidance as to how to write and format the post.

About the town of Ilsurian:
The town of llsurian in Varisia was established by Ilsur, a First Sword of the Knights of Aroden in the city of Korvosa. With the crumbling of the Chelish Empire, Ilsur wanted a militant-leaning meritocracy to replace noble rule in Korvosa, but had to eventually concede defeat roughly 80 years ago. He marched his troops to the west bank of the Skull River where it empties into Lake Syrantula, and awaited a chance to return and seize Korvosa by military force. He died waiting for the opportunity, and his army gradually transformed into a strong community of independent fishers and foresters owing loyalty to neither Korvosa nor Magnimar. The soldiers brought by Ilsur and their descendants are ethnic Chelaxians, and most of them have the strong features, pale skin, and dark hair of that group. Most of them also harbor prejudice against the native Varisians, and believe the stereotypes that Varisians are thieves and layabouts. Since very few permanent residents of Ilsurian are ethnic Varisians, this racism has rarely been a problem. Yet all that changed when Ilsurian became the latest stopping point for a traveling circus known as the Umbra Carnival.

About Me

Expand About Me:

I've been playing Pathfinder since around 2011 and I have been my group's main GM since 2013. In my real life games, I take a lot of pride in the fact that I have finished every adventure that I ever set out to run. I am a big believer in picking content that I will maintain my interest long term, setting up realistic expectations from the start of the game and surrounding myself players that I enjoy playing with.

I first started playing Play by Post games here on the Paizo forums in 2014 and I enjoy the format a lot. I like the opportunity to role play characters in ways that I could never pull off in an in person game. I like that the slower pace sometimes allows for character moments that would have gotten lost in the rush of an in a face to face game. What I don't love about Play by Post gaming is when the GM vanishes into the night and a great game falls apart, since a replacement GM is much harder to find than a replacement player. So, I have decided to try bring my cockroach like consistency to the table and try my hand at running a game! However, instead of jumping straight in with an Adventure Path, I want first get my feet wet with a module. So here we are!

FAQ

Expand FAQ:
What kinds of characters/players are you looking for?
For the PCs themselves, I am mainly looking for submissions that have personality. Your chances of being selected will go up exponentially if you have painted a clear picture of who your character is and how I can expect them to interact with the game world. For players there are two primary things I am looking for. First, I am looking for strong role players who will aim to interact with the world, the NPCs and most importantly, the other player characters. Second, I am looking for players who seem like they will be consistent posters and committed to completing the module. Have you ever spent a week actively RPing in a thread, even though the GM was on vacation with no internet? If so, you are the type of player I want!

Is there anything that will hurt my chances of being selected?
Min-maxing won’t help your chances, especially if your crunch choices have seemingly no correlation to your character’s background. A posting history that indicates a pattern of bailing on games without any explanation or creating a hostile gaming environment for other players is a definite bad mark. For players with no prior experience on the boards, make sure you have spent some time learning the format through guides or reading through other games. Making a few missteps is totally understandable, but seeming totally illiterate in the style of the boards would definitely hurt your chances. Remember, if you are unsure about how to do something, you can always just ask!

How many players are you recruiting?
I am aiming to recruit around five. However, the exact number will be variable on the number and quality of the submissions.

What will be the pace of the game?
I would like players to commit to at least one post per weekday and at least one post on the weekend, except under special circumstances (with the expectation that those special circumstance would be communicated as soon as possible).

Are you recruiting based on party role?
Yes and no. Party balance is certainly something that I will be keeping in mind. However, my ultimate goal is to find my favorite submissions that I think will be interesting together, not to form the perfect five-man party.

Do I have to create an alias?
No. However, if you are not using an alias, please use spoiler tags for your application, separating out your Crunch, Background and RP Samples into separate tags. Also, try to have one post where your application can be reviewed in its entirety.

Can I RP in the recruitment thread?
I would prefer that there was no RP in the recruitment thread. While I understand the appeal, it tends to clutter things up, making it difficult to track questions and new submissions. Please use the RP sample portion of your application to demonstrate your roleplaying ability and understanding of the PbP format. However, I still absolutely encourage discussion in the recruitment thread. If you think someone's character is cool, feel free to let them know! See a way your character might know another character? There is no guarantee that you will both be selected, but a little extra inspiration never hurt anyone!

Do you plan to continue with the same group after this module is done?
There are certainly other adventures that I would love to run and I am open to continuing with the same group. However, for now I am just committing to completing Murder’s Mark.

Why did you cut secrets and relationships from the 10 minute background? Can I still have them?
Sure. If you want to provide additional information because you have inspiration for them, please go right ahead. However, I am not requiring them since there may not be time in a short pre-written module to utilize those sections for every PC. Also, as a player, I sometimes find those sections a bit limiting. Not every character needs big secrets surrounding them or will have lots of friends and enemies in the immediate area. I am far more interested in the development of your character’s personality.

The 10 Minute Background format doesn't really fit the way I want to write my character. Do I have to use it?
Absolutely not. My goal with providing a format is not to force your character into a box, but to help paint a clearer picture of the kind of background information that I am looking for. The actual style of your background matter to me far less than the character itself being interesting and well developed.

Recruitment will close - Monday, July 2nd at 8:00AM EST/GMT-4
Please feel free to ask any questions either here in the recruitment thread or via PM and I will try to respond as soon as I can. Also, I will do my best to offer feedback via PM to those of you who submit their applications early. I look forward to seeing all your submissions!

Interested... could use a second game and mysteries are more fun than mindless meat-grinders. Would an exiled Ulfen oracle be totally out of place here? I'd love a chance to resurrect one particular old character and I've been looking for an opportunity to do so...

Kirsdrake wrote:

I don't see why that would be a problem, as long as you can explain how the character ended up in Illsurian. Being exiled is a pretty good start for that explaination.

Thank ye, will write something tomorrow, then. Do you need a full stats build for an application, or can that wait for later?

Kirsdrake wrote:

Ideally by the recruitment deadline I would like there to be enough of a stat block to at least paint a clear picture of how the character will be built. However, things can definitely still be tweaked after recruitment and it's not a big deal if stuff like equipment hasn't been totally picked.

Also, if you want to post the background first and then the crunch later on during the recruitment period, that is fine too. Just make sure your final submission is either in an alias or there is one final post that contains the complete submission.

I have a fireworks addicted elf I'd like to throw at this circus murder mystery. I just need to adjust the sheet I made for a PbP I didn't get into to make it should fit this. If you are still recruiting of course.

Liberty's Edge

I think I'll try to make something for this. On the topic of stat blocks and formatting, GM, how do you feel about people using myth-weavers.com to house our actual character sheet? It's easy to post a link to it and I can still include key stats in the posts via editing the "race" line.

I just like that it removes the need for copying and pasting templates, but if not, no big deal.

Dotting for interest.

Warden73 wrote:

Yep. Recruiting only started yesterday and will be open until July 2nd.

Daynen wrote:

Using Myth Weaver's is totally fine.

Cool! I haven't done any PbP on Paizo forums yet, so I'll have to draw up some RP examples and edit the alias sheet. I'll post it under the ALIAS sheet for review. So long as this isn't a PFS registration required adventure I should be golden for this. Thank you!

Warden73 wrote:

PFS registration is definitely not required. For all my time playing Pathfinder, I'm surprisingly Pathfinder Society illiterate, so I wouldn't know what to do with it if you did register, lol.

Ok, here's the Ulfen Oracle... build is very much a work in progress, background and personality sections done. Those are not on the "10-min background" -format, but should include answers to most questions... except to how Thrym ended up Illsurian. Although he wouldn't necessarily have had any particular reason... if fate and the spirits had led him in the area at the time, he might just be out to see what all the fuss is about.

Then about those RP/writing samples...

Out of combat post:

Sul, Therendor 16, 999 YK
ir'Valeria Estate - Karrnath

The old man opened his bloodshot eyes and yawned.

He lay still for a long moment, luxuriating at the novelty of a soft mattress between his back and the ground. He squinted at the light of noonday sun peeking in between the curtains, bringing up an arm to shield his emerald-green eyes from the light. He stared sleepily at his hand as if he was seeing it for the first time, enthralled at the way the sunlight seemed to set the flesh aglow from within. He frowned in thought; wasn't there supposed to be a half-healed scar just about there?

A moment of concentration as the flesh ran and rippled like water and the scar materialized. Inspecting his handiwork, the man nodded his head in apparent satisfaction. Still, it was a dangerous sign of him getting sloppy. The unwelcome thought was enough to force him all the way into wakefulness, and the retired army scout known as Flask rolled to his feet with agility that would have surprised many who had seen him hobble on painfully on the days when the promise of rain in the air brought out the worst of his arthritic.

Yawning one last time to get it out of his system, the elderly veteran scratched his unkempt beard and stated at his reflection in the expensive full-body mirror decorating his room. An old soldier's fancy, he had explained it away, and since everyone who came to know of Flask soon learned about his many eccentricities the explanation was taken at face value. An old ugly troll of a man having a spot of vanity certainly didn't come up close to the weirdest thing about the endearing old coot.

Muttering at his reflection, Flask considered. He had been on the trail for 5 days, so half an inch to his beard might be called for. And living on trail rations and covering a lot of ground, he might lose a pound from his waist while he was at it. And a black eye. Yeees, that would be something new, yet something people had come to expect.

A thought and it was so. He stared at his reflection, touching his now blackened left eye and flinching in pain. He wanted to get it right from the word go. On the second though, perhaps just a bit less black and more purple? That's it. Pleased with his adjustments, Flask took a look around his room, sighed, and began gathering up the clothes he had cast away last night when he had arrived. It had been late enough for him to want to hit the sack without further thought, although he was pleased to notice he had had the presence of mind to set a chair against the door to bar it. He disliked surprise visitors and some new maid might just have decided to come clean up the room in the morning, unaware of the room's resident's return and of his incessant demands that the place was off-limits to the lasses.

Getting back into character, Flask groaned and cursed as he forced his stiff legs into his brown leather breeches, then sat down on the edge of his bed to put on his immaculate boots, taking care to hide a knife in the concealed sheath sewn into the left one. He had to look for his black shirt for a few minutes before he noticed it tangled with the linens. It appeared he had been marching in his sleep again, reliving his days in the army. Thankfully the mist of Dal Quor had kept their secrets and he could recall nothing of the dream, except a vague sense of expectation.

Shrugging his bony shoulders into the shirt, he slipped a brown leather doublet over it, stopping for a moment to gently touch the faded symbol sewn onto the left sleeve. Corporal's stripes and the symbol of his old unit. Well, neither were no more. No reason to dwell on them now.

He stood up with a grunt of effort and a muffled curse and put on his belt, making sure the content of his belt pouches were all there. He slipped the rest of his daggers into their sheaths and took a critical look at his worn short sword. He better visit the House armourer later today; the thing was getting too dull for a whetstone to handle. Last but not the least he picked up his shoulderpack and his grey cloak and looked at himself in the mirror.

It would do, he decided. "Another day being Flask," he said aloud in a voice that had nothing at all to do with his favourite assumed persona and smiled brightly at his reflection, snapping into attention and brutally savaging a salute. That was more like it.

He moved aside the chair blocking the door and spotted a letter that had been slipped under the door. He picked it up, a dagger materializing in his hand to slice the envelope open. Apparently, someone had been instructed to bring him word of an event but had been unable to rouse Flask from his sleep and, rather than press the issue or force the door, had decided to take the slow way to solve the problem.

He read the few lines of the simple message, frowned again and crumbled the letter into a ball that he stuffed into a pocket. So the young Lord wanted to meet him. Luckily there was still some time for the appointed hour; he was feeling hungry. Taking a look outside to gauge the time, he estimated it was about the 10th bell. That meant he had plenty of time to raid the kitchens.

Flask stepped into the corridor, closing and locking the door behind him and headed for the stairs, exchanging a nod and a glower with a house guard coming up the corridor the other way. Most of the regulars at the ir'Valeria estates were more or less accustomed with Flask and his moods, so the guard ignored the scout’s constant low-key muttering and went on his way with a smile on his face.

***

Munching on the remains of a bread roll, Flask sidled his way into the estate's meeting room, his darkweave clothes and his natural skills making him one with the shadows. It paid to keep his skills well honed, and the locals had learned to expect the old veteran emerging from the woodwork on a regular basis. So not skulking would have been more suspicious for him. Besides, he enjoyed jumping on guards dozing on their feet, always ready to ramble a lecture to the ‘youn' uns' of the error of their ways and how they would have had their heads handed to them had they done their job that bad during the War.

Noticing the young Lord sitting at far side of the table, Flask stepped into the pool of light cast by a candle and cleared his throat noisily. "Beggin' the young Master's pardon," he said in his rough and raw voice. "Ye called fer me, young Master?" The fact Lord Adrian was one of the few into the secret of his true nature was no reason to stop being who he was.

Combat post:

Robert blinked his eyes as he felt the effects of the creature's moan. For a moment his mind wandered, but then the body-monitor programs running in his neural processor nodes kicked in, demanding his attention as they detected the sudden changes in his higher brain functions. When the warnings themselves were not enough, the programs introduced changes of their own, seeking to limit the external influence's effects by means of electro-chemical white noise.

He came to with a start, to be greeted by detailed reports of the sonic attack's effects on the electrical activity of his brain, prompting his attention in his virtual vision. With an annoyed thought the technomancer dismissed the message, flagging it for later attention, and fixed his eyes on the creature trying to savage John with its claws. He realized that the thing was only loosely attached to the material plane, and thus highly resistant to most forms of damage. But there was one thing that should work on it – a direct projection of force... and he had a fair idea how to manifest it. An interesting thought experiment he had been working on for a while now, although never quite perfected.

'Well, nothing like the threat of bloody murder to focus one's attention,' he thought, calling for his memory management programs to retrieve the mathematical formulae he needed from his research project storage and got to work.

Magic Missile, full round casting: 3d4 + 3 ⇒ (2, 1, 1) + 3 = 7 Force damage, so should work well against this thing

'Let's see...' Murmuring the complex equations that would manifest pure energy in the form of lances cast at the target of his choice, Robert could feel the strain on his brain as he tried to master the new technique. Something he had succeeded in a few times in the past, but never reliably. Because while the point of the reality manipulation might be the projection of force, the truly difficult, mind-twisting part of it was the way the effect defied causality. Not, as many practitioners seemed to believe, an attack that never missed. No, the point of it was that one launched the attack only after it had already hit its target. Thus, the cause followed the effect, making merely documenting the intended effects of the equation difficult as language itself rebelled against properly expressing how it worked.

But work it did, thankfully, as three finger-thin lances of energy briefly converted to a physical form, like icicles of perfectly clear ice manifested in front of Robert's outstretched hand, then streaked forward to strike the undead in the chest, tearing both its physical form and its spiritual essence.

Wandered there and wanted to see what the fuss what about is a perfectly reasonable answer to the question. That particular question is mostly to see who is an outsider vs. who is actually from Illsurian.

Wadren73 with the PC alias posting to say: "Cool!" I had to make some corrections on the Alias page. Wrong group. I mixed up the Bellflowers with Saranrae (The Dawn Flower). Big whoops there. And I have the RP Samples written up. I hope I formatted the combat correctly as I did roll out the fight.

Combat:

Lucky looked back at the dwarf tutor who'd insisted she come on this expedition. He was probably regretting the investigation of this tomb with so few guards. Lucky wasn't, "You were right Pop, er professor. Studying new things IS fun!" and let loose a blast of flames onto the pair of zombies approaching her. Afterall, fire was supposed to be effective on most undead and she could certainly angle it to hit both.

Zombies roll 1d20+0 Reflex vs Burning Hands and get 8 & 11. Take 4 fire and 1 force damage. Zobmies down to 7 HP.

But her blasts are still weak and the zombies came closer. Lucky didn't consider this a problem. They are fighting in a long corridor, the zombies are slow, she can keep backing up and blasting them.

Zombies move 10' up. Lukcy takes a 5' step back and unleashes Burning Hands. Zombie reflex roll at 8 & 10 take full 3 fire and 1 force. Zombies down to 3 HP.

This time one of the zombies staggers past Lucky, blocking her from stepping back while the other approaches. She took the opportunity to bring out her claws and take a swipe at the one passing her before clawing at the one in front of her. She is unable to move due to the zombies swarming her.

Zombie A moves to flank Lucky, provoking an Attack of Opportunity. Lucky rolls 1d20+0 for a 19 and deals 1d4 damage for 2 to Zombie A. Lucky attacks Zombie B with a 10 and misses.

The zombies take a swing at her each. The one behind fails horribly but doding it leads Lucky right into the swing from the other one. It hits her hard. Lucky decides the one that hit her needs to be burned so she claws at the one behind her to get some room.

Zombie A attacks and misses at 12 but Zombie B rolls 18 and hits Lucky for 6 damage, reducing her to 1 HP. Lucky rolls a 12 to hit Zombie A, getting 4 points of damage. Zombie A is below 0 HP and is destroyed. Lucky 5 foot steps back from Zombie B.

The last zombie again stumbles towards Lucky, having not other choice. The elf goes back to her previous tactic of stepping and flame.

Zombie B moves up 5', it cannot 5 foot step due to being staggered. Lucky steps back again and unleashes Burning Hands. Zombie B gets a 6 on Reflex save and so takes the full 4 Fire and 1 Force damage. Zombie B is destroyed.

As Lucky looks back at her mentor, Durnan the dwarf, is cutting a pair of zombies in half to relieve their escort and there are none left. Durnan looks Lucky up and down, "Lass? I know you can use it so next time give yourself some magic armor before attacking with the claws."

Non-combat:

Alchemy Lab 4, Almas University, Almas, Andoran.

The stone room is cold despite the sunny day outside. Even with the high ceiling and multiple windows the light does little to warm the space. This is partly due to the thick glass of the windows and also by design of hte room. Within the stone room the only light sources are a pair of heatless torches. Magical in nature, they provide illumination enough to reveal the room is filled with heavy stone tables. Between the tables are thick 5 foot high stone walls arranged to surround them save for a way in.

The tables themselves are laden with clay pots, glass vials, crucibles, retorts, and heat sources of mundane and magical origin. Only one table is occupied, a russet ponytail barely bobbing up over the seperating walls.

Said hair belongs to a elf. She is dressed down for working in the lab. A leather apron covers her front, save for her face that is covered in a durable green and brown striped scarf. A leather headband keeps her hair back just in case the pony tail isn't enough. A blue long sleeved tunic and matching hosen complete her attire.

Uncovered hands dart about the active alchemical equipment. Red eyes follow every movement, calculating and measuring contents to precision. This is one of Lucky's favorite places in Almas University. While her sponsor Duran preferred ancient history, Lucky preferred alchemy. Learning the makeup of the universe as a formula was the logic used by her peers in their studies of alchemical works.

Lucky was much more base in her interest. She loved fireworks. Explosion flashing in the sky, a brief beautiful flower of fire. It was something that called to the elf, for whatever reason. And the labs made it so much easier to finely craft the product. Like the redish powder she was pouring from a mortar into a funnel at the top of a foot long wooden tube.

"Saltpeter with a third sulfur for color variation," her muffled words described the mix she was adding to the tube. Once finished she set down the stone bowl onto the table and picked up a wooden tapper sized for the tube. Lucky slowly tamped down the powder for several minutes. Finally, a circle of waxed paper was tamped down on top of the mixture, before the conical top finally sealed the tube. It was gently placed under the table to stand upright with two more standing tubes, "Done," was the muffled, but clearly happy, cry from the elf.

A slow clap drew her attention, causing her to whip her head around to see...stone. Right, I'm short was the annoyed thought going through the elf's mind. She pulled down the filter scarf with her left hand while hopping up and grasping the divider wall with her right. She manged it and was able to peak over the wall.

A blonde human woman with reading glasses on her nose and dressed in the student uniform of Almas university is the one clapping. The ring on her finger, a silver eagle, is shining brightly with the light spell upon it. "Well done, well done. But do you think the teachers aren't going to notice you used up supplies Lucky? Again?"

The elf laughed as she rested her chin on the dividing wall which she now gripped with both hands. "Don't underestimate me Claire! I got a red one to sell," Lucky did not even try to hide how smug she was.

The human, Claire, put a hand on her hip as she scoffed at the declaration. "Right, like red is going to solve everything," blue eyes rolled behind the glasses. Lucky tutted at her fellow student, ""Sweet sweet Claire, you don't think big. That new merchant group in the harbor likes red and are looking to celebrate. I sell them this sample rocket. Maybe they ask the deparment here for more, maybe they don't. But I get enough to replace what I used, so it's all good," she hopped back and there was a wet sound as she stepped into the thing that was not so good.

From behind the wall Claire asked,"What was that?"

Lucky didn't want to answer. The science of Alchemy was a great thing, even in its failures. How was the elf to have none someone rearranged the containers when she was making the first sky rocket? Totally not my fault that it turned into a tangle bagger she thought as she glared down at the goop holding her right boot in place. It was a good thing she bought her brown boots for durability and not looks.

Claire let out a loud sigh, "You messed up something, didn't you?"

Lucky gave an answer in Goblin, getting a reply from Claire in the same. The elf laughed, "So nice to have somebody to talk to. Help me clean up?"

Claire sighed as she headed for the cabinet with the cleaning supplies, "If I didn't know for a fact that you give some of these away to the Bellflowers I'd have turned you in for this a long time ago, you know that right?"

Looking to Lucky's alcove as she walked, Claire saw the reply from the elf. She had her left fist up in the air, with a thumbs up. Lucky would readily admit to being strange so why shouldn't she act like it too? Her friend simply figured it would be a long day.

Alrighty. Here's what we're looking at so far.

Submissions:
Kirsdrake - Thrym Thyrsson - Human (Ulfen) Oracle
Warden73 - Luk Luk Eaglefin - Elf Sorcerer

Interest/Dot:
The Chess
Daynen
CrazyYodler

Here's hoping there's some more interest over the weekend, otherwise we might have a bit of a problem getting the game off the ground. I do really like both submissions that I do have though! So, I'm definitely keeping my fingers crossed for some more applications.

Hi Ancalima,

I'll step out, unfortunately! I'm already committed to a good number of PbPs and I want to give justice to each one with good posts/day. I wish you all the best and have fun on the module! It certainly does look fun.

Cheers

I am interested. Only just started my first pbp so will probably have to write up the RP for this character (that I haven't decided on yet)
At the moment I'm tossing up between a halfling paladin and some kind of brawler.

@The Chess: No problem. Best of luck to you with your new games

@Rabscuttle: Cool! Look forward to seeing your submission!

What would you think about a reworked Jenni? She was so fun to play.

So since this thread has kind of died due to lack of interest, I am going to go ahead and say that "Recruitment is officially closed"

However, since I still very much want to run this, I have been working to try and pull in some people from my other game. I think I may still be able to get enough people to run this yet!

@Warden73 and Kirsdrake: Assuming you guys are still interested, you can mosey on down to the discussion thread.

@Jenni: Oh Jenni! Yeah, that was a great campaign, while it lasted. I've thought about reviving Mira a few times too. Jenni would definitely be welcome addition. You and Shari (and we'll see if the others were interested) can also head on down to the discussion thread!

I'm still interested, just needed some time to work out the character.

Here's what I've got so far - I still need to write up the RP sample.
Crunch is basically done, just need to finalise equipment and then convert to forum-format.
Should be done tomorrow, if that's ok.

Vard Pendengas, Halfling Paladin of Kurgess:

Concept, Life Events, Personality:
* Vard was born in a fishing village, from a family of dockworkers.
* Growing up, he was an athletic youngster, always interested in sports and other physical games.
* He is a bit of a show-off and likes to be the centre of attention.
* As a teenager, Vard went to the harvest fair in a larger town nearby. At the "Test your Strength and Ring the Bell", he realised that the carny running it was cheating - there was something blocking the ringer's path. He not at all subtly called out the man, climbed up the pole and removed the obstruction, waving it about. Coming down, he got into a shouting match with a number of the carnies, when he was suddenly backed up by a half-elf cleric of Kurgess who had been quietly observing the affair.
Unbeknownst to either Vard or the cleric, there were some necromancers involved in running parts of the fair - the claims of dishonesty forced them to hasten their plans and they unleashed a number of undead upon the fairgoers. Thrust into combat, Vard grabbed the Ring the Bell hammer to use as a makeshift weapon, and was able to assist the cleric (and the town guard) in beating back the undead.
Seeing his potential, the cleric offered to take Vard with him, and mentor him in the teachings of Kurgess - Vard eagerly agreed. They also took the makeshift hammer to a smith, and had it forged into a proper weapon - this is his signature weapon and is a reminder of how he started on his current path.
* Vard traveled with the cleric for a while, eventually growing into a paladin and later setting out on his own. He travels the land, visiting fairs and carnivals. He sometimes competes, sometimes acts as an judge, sometimes just keeps a lookout for frauds and cheaters.

Motivation:
Vard journeys partly because he feels it is his holy duty to do so, partly because he wants to someday do great things and be famous throughout the world.

Quirks and Mannerisms:
* Vard can be a bit of a show-off. He can occasionally be too eager to rush into danger.
* He does like to be clear-headed and generally avoids alcohol and things that could impair his judgment.
* He likes to be neat and tidy - getting his clothes dirty or rumpled for no good reason will leave him annoyed until he can fix it.

Why is he is in Illsurian:
He is checking out the carnival.

Hi Rabscuttle. I wasn't sure if you were still interested in the game. Apologies for cutting the recruitment short, but it was becoming pretty obvious that there was not going to be enough interest in the game to move forward the way things were going.

I have four players confirmed right now. Two others, including Warden73, I have invited but not heard back from yet. If either confirms they are not interested or doesn't respond by tomorrow, I will put you as next in line. I want to avoid the party size going over 6, though.

No worries, here is my alias.
I might need until the original close time to pick an avatar pic though. hmmm...

Hi GM, quick questions (One dumb, one not):

1) Have you ever 'stealth nerfed' a player? By this, I mean accept a player concept and then after 2-3 levels either inform them some core bit of their character or build will not be played by RAW (For example, telling a Wyrwood they can not do anything when everyone else is asleep other than read a book or stare at the wall, or let them buy a piece of equipment like Boots of the Cat, and then tell them 3 levels after they buy it and have just fallen off a cliff that the boots are silly and you don't allow silly magic items in your game). Yes, both of those have happened to me, thus why I'm looking for a new game and asking dumb questions of the potential GM. :)

2) I have a Varisian Sylph Arcanist that might work for this game, if that's acceptable?

@mdt:

No, I don't think I've ever done that. I'm usually pretty upfront about things I don't like during character creation. During play, I tend stick pretty close to RAW, except to encourage player creativity where the rules would restrict it. The closest I come to what you described in when players pick something that doesn't work by RAW the way they thought it did...and even then I'll usually let them swap it out if we're not too deep into the level.

That being said. Apologies, but public recruitment for this game has been closed, as of yesterday due to lack of interest. I've instead moved to private recruitment.

Hi GM Ancalima,

I'm working on the fluff but feel like the crunch is well balanced. Here's a connect:
Fain the Under-Gard'ner

Basic Fluff - Moved here two years ago after a flood ruined business in his home town. Works as the under-gardener either for the town or for some great family. Wants to be a genius but is only a little bright. He sees mysteries where there are none all of the time - overactive imagination. Others see him as the person to call on when your family pet goes missing. Quite friendly, well liked mostly, so he knows a lot of the town gossip.

Likes gardening but loves animals more. Studies them as an extensive hobby from hunter's blinds. Has a large collection of animal taxidermy with write-ups in several journals - pseudo-scientific. His extensive study of animals colours the way he looks at people - sees them as a collection of instincts and basic needs.

Probably got third place in the town fair archery contest - novices division. Known as a talented leather-worker.
