Need to get a third NPC / Cohort Helper for 5th level. Rat-Folk SWAT Team build

Pathfinder RPG General Discussion

So groups running a fun summer themed vacation adventure at 5th level. I want to make a Rat-Folk SWAT team. Since Rat-Folk can stand in the same square I wanted to have one guy with a tower shield and another guy with an expensive gun so I can alchemical tinker it into a cannon or bumbard. The problem is I need one more crewmen to work the cannon. I can take Squire, but I need one but preferably two more so I can have a second tower shield so we are all covered.

A familiar (possibly improved), ratfolk skeletons or zombies (the swarming trait does improve attacks so they should keep it), you might be able to argue that an unseen servant could help reload a siege weapon. Those are the ideas which spring to mind.

Edit: or you could just hire NPCs.

Isn't that what the spell reloading hands is for?

Or maybe, just maybe, talk another player into joining your team?

Not sure if you're aware of it and have already prepared for it, but a Tower Shield can only grant you total cover. You'd need Mobile Fortress, and its precedent Mobile Bulwark Style if you want to grant Total Cover to other players.

Since you're gonna share the same space, you could also take Shield Wall instead of Mobile Fortress, but I'd still recommend you to take Mobile Bulwark Style to be able to grant Total Cover as a move action.

As for your lack of crewmen, you could let the Tower Shield wielder take (at least) 2 levels of Eldritch Guardian, and choose a Wallaby as their familiar.

1 Shield focus
2
3 Mobile Bulwark Style
4 Mobile Fortress
5 Any Feat

Now the Tower Shield wearer will have a familiar (with another Tower Shield) who can also grant Total Cover as a move action to all allies, while using its standard action to work the cannon.

Mobile Fortress was the plan actually. That and maybe Artillery team for normal use.

Alright, this might work.

Cavalier 1 / Eldritch Guardian 2 / Brawler 2

1. Scurrying Swarmer, Artillery Team (B)
2.
3. Shield Focus
4.
5. Mobile Bulwark Style, Mobile Fortress (B)

Martial Flexibility: Rapid Reload (Musket)

Items: Opalescent White Pyramid Ioun Stone (Cracked), 1,500 gp for proficiency with the Musket.

So the tower shield ratfolk uses a move action at the start of combat to get Rapid Reload (via Martial Flexibility). This allows the familiar to reload the Musket as a standard action while providing Total Cover as a move action. As an added bonus, since both the shield-vermin and familiar can reload, you can fire twice in a round if the gun-vermin is capable.

Your musket ratfolk will also need to take Scurrying Swarmer to share space with the familiar, though.
