How are people creating names for their Skittermander characters?

Maybe this skittermander generator will help!

The only name I thought of involved rhyming. Xander Lysander skittermander commander

Nope.

Pathfinder - Spiral of Bones has a Starfinder bonus story and in issue 2 a couple of skittermanders are named: Chub-Chub Flunt, Gurv-Gurv Ploss, Dobus-pin-Dovus and Vo. The older a Skittermander is the longer their name gets, because Vo is still very young

I have a yellow Skittermander mechanic named Buttercup.

Homegame naming convention has skittermander names with somatic components since they have so many hands. Players make the hand sign too or they are not pronouncing the name right. The skittermander's player gets a kick out of introducing herself to new players and then telling them they are saying it wrong and seeing how long it takes for them to pick up on the hand motion.

Overall it seems to be Garden Gnome / Oompa-Loompa naming conventions for now. The hand sign thing is funny.

I'm totally stealing the hand-sign thing. Bonus points if it requires six hands to speak the language fluently.

I just reuse the names of all the aliens from the Lilo and Stitch television series.

I have a homegame player who named his Fluffernutter, and I made a manic one-man camera crew mechanic for a homebrew that I've just named Scrambles. It fits with his "I'll help you or we'll all die in the process" approach to video production."

The Skittermander in the campaign I'm playing is named Corporal Cuddles. She was a member of the Vesk military's diplomatic arm, that was formed after the Vesk began to "conquer" the Skittermander home world. The Skittermanders, being true to their nature, wanted to help so much that eventually Skittermander only units were formed for "diplomatic" purposes. Secretly, they were a weapon of mass annoyance.

One of my players is an int 6 skittermander that picked up that people like cats somewhere and only meows. one of the other players, a Lashuntha envoy, "adopted" it thinking it was actually a pet and named it Mao.

I actually asked the skittermanders' creator, the great Crystal Frasier, about their naming conventions a while back, and here's what she thought:

Keep in mind, this is all head-canon and not official:

Skittermanders don't use personal names by default. They're lack of long-range thinking/coordination ability renders individual identifiers beyond "Hey you" or "That guy" largely unnecessary, and the fact that parents abandon their nonsentient offspring immediately after birth means they're not around to name any of their chattering horde. An individual who does something memorable, important, or funny might pick up a nickname for a while, but unless it's used constantly (especially in spending time around non-skittermanders), it will eventually be forgotten.

Skittermanders who become part of the larger galactic society often pick up nickanmes the same way, or happily accept names that others give... as much as they can remember, at least. A skittermander named "Prisoner-84792" might only go by "Prisoner" or "Eight." Of course, there are always exceptions, like Sgt. Seen-Some-S*%*termander.

This might imply that Skittermanders have trouble with the long courses of study need for some careers - scientist for instance. :(

You need to trick them into an education. Tell them that they need to help their teacher by memorizing the table of elements.

But who (save another Skittermander) would do such a thing?

Extremely exasperated vesk bureaucrats.

"I helped by building your table of the elements!"

"building... uh oh"

"Yep, built all the elements into a table for you"

"But some are highly reactive, toxic, or radioactive..."

"Ooh, they react with a pretty flame, I helped you well."

Currently playing a skittermander envoy (unless the game collapses, because Junk Happens). Deliberately hacked her name together out of a kasatha name and a vesk name, with the implication being that she named herself after the two earliest people she remembers having an influence on her life.

The Skitter shot had a section on naming conventions that matches some of what's above:

"3. A SKITTERMANDER’S NAME GROWS AS THE SKITTERMANDER AGES AND PASSES CERTAIN MILESTONES. A NAME BEGINS VERY SHORT, USUALLY NO MORE THAN ONE SYLLABLE. NEW SYLLABLES ARE ADDED WITH THE PASSING OF TIME OR WHENEVER THE SKITTERMANDER FEELS LIKE IT. ADDED SYLLABLES ARE OFTEN REPETITIVE, AND MANY SKITTERMANDERS ADOPT PARTS OF OTHER ALIEN NAMES (PARTICULARLY VESK NAMES) INTO THEIR OWN." (Skitter shot, 19)

Sorry about the shouting, I've been lazy and copy-pasted from the (free) Skitter shot.
