Attack of the Clones?

Rules Questions

Hello

My Necromancer is currently undergoing the Rise of the Runelords AE
In the description of a certain location, it was disclosed there was a pile/mound of dead clones, generated from attempts at improving the Clone spell. Can these dead clones be animated as zombies or skeletons? If so what types of undead could be generated from them? My necromancer is currently carrying a wand of desecrate and 10,50gp onyx gems and 20, 25gp onyx gems.

Clones of what? That impacts what they'd be. Should be able to raise them as zombies or skeletons no problem

I believe they are clones of Vraxeris, an 18th level Illusionist. We discovered his dead body and his research into Improving the clone spell. As well as the um... Pile mentioned above.

Animate dead requires a corpse as the target. Clone (if not given a soul) merely produces 'inert flesh.'

I don't believe it would be a valid target.

Even if they could be targeted, they are just going to be human bodies, the same as you would get from killing a villager. I certainly don't see any way that you could make a intelligent undead from the remains, since they never had a soul or any class levels (the Illusionist did, but these chunks of flesh only would have had the levels if they got the soul.)

Your best bet would be looking at a necrocraft.

I think zombies and skeletons would work, mostly because of the fact that the only difference between the clones and the original body is that they were awaiting the soul, while the corpse is missing it. Either way, they should be essentially identical. I fully agree that intelligent undead are out of the question.

For whatever reason, Animate Dead does have something to do with the previous soul, if for no other reason than you can't resurrect someone if their body is still walking around as a Zombie. Exactly how animate dead and a soul interact has never really been detailed out, but there is some interaction (and probably relates to why animate dead is always an evil thing.)

Obviously a false corpse wouldn't work. Similarly, I personally wouldn't let something like polymorph any object create a corpse of something that would then be suitable for animate dead.

There isn't any balance reason for the no clones animating though, and I wouldn't complain if a different DM saw it differently then I do.
