So I think we can all agree that the Pathfinder name, for all of its merits, is kind of terrible when it comes to being easily searchable and identifiable. 'Pathfinder' is a really generic term and is more associated with Nissan than Paizo! Plus it's used in dozens of different things as well which means Pathfinder game stuff on social media is harder to find than it should be..

Of course over the past ten years its built up a good reputation and a fair bit of brand recognition among RPG gamers. But if Paizo wishes to be bold then why not change the name entirely?

Instead of calling it Pathfinder Second Edition, why not call it... AdventureSeeker or something?

I'm pretty sure that they're not going to remove the value of pathfinder's name in the world of tabletop games, also they'd have to pay for another trademark

This thread has gone into joke mode, but seriously, Paizo's brand expanded from "Pathfinder" to "-finder" with the release of Starfinder. Right now, they use Pathfinder for both their adventure path magazine and their medieval fantasy RPG and use Starfinder for their science fiction RPG.

Maybe Pathfinder 2nd Edition would be a good time to separate the adventure path magazine from the medieval fantasy RPG. We could have:

  • Swordfinder - medieval fantasy RPG, 2nd edition
  • Starfinder - science fiction RPG
  • Pathfinder: By the Sword - adventure path magazine for Swordfinder
  • Pathfinder: To the Stars - adventure path magazine for Starfinder

One day Paizo could release a detective RPG Cluefinder, a espionage RPG Spyfinder, a steampunk RPG Steamfinder, etc. I would have renamed the Pathfinder RPG to Dragonfinder, but that steps on the toes of another trademark.

Dijkstra’s, or A*. Mark might have some better suggestions, though.

Spoiler:
Those are names of algorithms used to find shortest paths.

If it's going to be the name of a car, I suggest Testarossa. It's a better looking car to find when you google for your RPG.

Pithfinder, what, what

I used to work for a publisher where, due to some less than clever thinking about names, we had a textbook called "New Headway New Edition". I therefore propose "Newest Pathfinder Newest Edition (now with added goblins)"

If we're naming it after a car, let's name it Tesla. But maybe there's already too many people vying for that name ...

Clearly. Only intellectuals and true gamers deserve Advanced P&D.

I will never stop to find amusing the self-rightneous some people have about a hobby which is based in pretending to be an elf.

Dude, you need to get off this road you are on right now. If you think that being a fan of a more complicated iteration of the game makes you smarter than people who prefer a less complicated variant then I'm afraid there's only misery, pain and toxic sludge down that road for you and people around you. Gatekeeping in a bloody HOBBY that's supposed to be ENJOYED by PEOPLE of all walks of life never got anybody anywhere, worse, instead it got us #gamergate kids telling women and girls that they are not true enough to play games big boys play.

This is toxic, this is inane and honestly while I can conjure some empathy for who people who are grumpy because all their books will be no longer supported or they'll have to re-learn the system to play PFS or they'll have to wait some time for their kitsune kineticist, the "I'm a true gamer and now they're dumbing down my game so that all those filthy casuals will play it" is just plain bad and wrong on oh so many levels.

I thought that was supposed to be about how often the players spend days around the gaming table with stale pizza without taking a shower . . . .

Honestly I love what the thread has turned into but if people are really concerned with losing the connection to the Pathfinder name you could just put a colon in the name of the game.

Call it Newfinder: Pathfinder Second Edition.
