Way of the Wicked - Discord Text / PbP Game

Recruitment

Sovereign Court

Guilty.

You're not just a lawbreaker, you're the worst of the worst and too dangerous to live among the good people of Talingarde. You were dragged in chains before a magistrate and condemned. They sent you to the most notorious prison in the country and there you were held down and branded with a runic F, marking you as forsaken. You won’t be at Branderscar Prison for long. In three days justice comes. In three days everything ends.

What a pity. If only there was a way out of this stinking rat-hole. If only there was a way to escape. If only...

No. No one has ever escaped from Branderscar Prison. This is where your story ends.

Game Style
I'll be running this game through Discord rather than on the forums. It's a long AP, sitting at a solid 7 books, so posting once per day isn't going to cut it. I'm hoping that throughout the day, especially during the evenings, we can get in some solid story movement. I don't expected constant devotion, but I do expect you to keep up with the flow of the group (or at least keep up with me, the GM). We're looking for people hungry for RP who enjoy getting into it every chance they can get and have a little extra free time.

This is a story driven campaign, not combat. Though combat will never be trivialized, I will be rigging it to be shorter and less frequent but more intense to make sure you're still being forced to use resources. I reward detail and creativity in combat; smart moves can have more impact than powerful hits. Maps will be used to give you an idea of your surroundings but combat is played out theater of the mind style.

The more specific you are about your actions, the more often you'll see bonuses to your rolls or reduced DCs. I still like things to be probable, so the rule of cool only stretches so far with me. If you need something in the mechanics bent for flavor, you'll find that I can be very amenable to reasonable requests.

About the Campaign
Way of the Wicked is a 3rd party AP and one of the few designed for evil PCs. I'm currently playing it myself and just reached book 7. It's a fun, engaging story with a lot of variety. The basic themes throughout the AP are revenge, corruption, and power. Reading up on Asmodeus (we'll be using Paizo's rendition of the deity) is probably a good idea. Maybe also refresh yourself on the downtime rules, as there will eventually be some time for such activities between missions.

How to Apply
Pick a race, pick a class, and have a general build in mind. I don't expect a completed sheet but having one is certainly not going to hurt your chances. Want to be a fire mage? Tell me that. Grappler? That's really all I need to know. You get the idea. If you do make a sheet, do it in Myth-Weavers.

What I'm really looking for here is a character. I'd like a brief, but well written physical description of the character, a quick overview of their personality, and a snippet about the crime they committed.

Things I do not care about are who their parents are, who bullied them in preschool, how their first love smelled, or how they run like Naruto. The last one especially.

Character Creation

  • Level 1
  • 25 point buy (no focus and foible)
  • 3 traits, 1 drawback (one trait must be from the handbook)
  • 0gp starting wealth
  • LN, LE, NE alignments only

Due to the nature of the game, Paladins are a banned class along with gunslingers (except bolt ace) and gun-using archetypes. Summoners, barbarians, and rogues must be unchained.

House Rules

  • Feat fixes are in effect
  • 2 extra skill points per level (as per the AP's recommendation)
  • Ninjas receive the unchained rogue's finesse training class feature
  • I'm open to very little 3pp

Recruitment
I'll be recruiting for as long as it takes. Ideally, no more than a week or two. I'll be picking up 3-5 players for this adventure. This is not the only place I'm recruiting from, but I figured since I wanted to run an ongoing text game, here would probably have the biggest pool of potential players.

About Me
Wowee this has gotten long. That should tell you a little something about me... Anyways, as mentioned above I have played this AP almost to completion. I liked it so much I thought it'd be fun to GM myself. I've been playing Pathfinder for about four years now. I'm currently GMing a Starfinder game for friends, but much prefer standard fantasy. I get more into roleplay when done through text so that's how I'm running this. Plus I find it a lot more low key and manageable than 4-6 hour voice sessions.

Questions? I'm quickest replying on Discord (Toxic#5061) but I'll be keeping my eye on the thread, too.

I'm interested in playing a human inquisitor of Asmodeus. Will come back with a more fleshed out concept later today.

I would like to apply with a tiefling slayer, focused on archery and sniping.

Sovereign Court

I look forward to reading about both of your characters when you post your apps.

I'd be interested in coming up with a half-orc mesmerist that was once apprenticing to be their tribe's shadow shaman. More to come.

Alright, I have a very basic outline of what kind of character she is. I'm more than happy to expand on anything as necessary.

Eden Ghazobari

Physical Description:

Eden is about 5'9" tall and weighs in at just over 200 lbs. She's stout and has relatively low body fat and, thus, her muscles are somewhat defined but she lacks the definition that would be required for a six-pack. She's build more like a part-time powerlifter.

Her skin is a faint green color and her hair is long and black but she keeps one side of it shaved. Her eyes are an incredibly dark brown and, aside from small tusks protruding from her bottom lips, she's fairly attractive though something about her appearance is also offputting. She tends to wear leathers and furs but leaves some skin showing on her arms, back, and chest. She has a series of pitch black tribal tattoos that cover her body and look somewhat like visual or orcish representations of shadows.

Personality:

Alignment: NE

Eden is extremely brazen. She can be persuasive as she sometimes has to be in her tribe but her experience has always been that fear wins respect and causing others to fear her makes her happy.

She's totally unafraid to confront others and push them around to get what she wants. People don't usually like her but she knows how to win respect and she ultimately believes that's more important.

Basic Build Idea:

I'm going to go full mesmerist and focus on debuffs and doing some damage. Mostly plan to focus on shadow abilities.

Crime:

I'm imagining Eden went as an ambassador to a human city as the most charismatic person in her tribe. While there, she was insulted by someone important. In an effort to exact revenge for the insult, she attempted to murder the human who made the comment. She was caught and imprisoned. What's worse, the human she tried to kill was someone very important in the local seat of government.

Sovereign Court

Ah, I think I wasn't clear about what I want for that "snippet about the crime they committed" part. I want it written in character or other form of narrative prose (feel free to take creative liberties when it comes to involved NPCs, locations, etc). Just to give me an idea about your skill level and style for writing!

Sorry for not being more clear about that.

So this is the basic stuff about Markus Denovian, LE Inquisitor of Asmodeus.

Physical description:
Markus is 6'5" tall and weighs 215 lb. He has blond hair that he keeps in a mohawk and light blue eyes. His complexion is pale and his face has a somewhat pleasant shape, but is spoilt by scars on the left side of his face and a semi-permanent sneer. Markus prefers to dress in nondescript clothes in muted colours that covers most of his body except his arms.

Personality:
Having learnt at an early age that most people are bastards, Markus is distrustful of most people and prefers to stay out of the spotlight as mcuh as possible. He's is not at all charismatic and often lets other people do the talking, unless someone needs scaring. Due to his Lawful Evil personality he fits into hierachies well, but might not always likes where he ends up on the ladder.

Build:
My plan is to build Markus as a frontline inquisitor who focusses on dealing damage and using teamwork feats.

Crime:
"My family had always had a hatred for the Mitrans and the Darius family so closely associated with the church. So when the utterly despicable pile of meat they call King Markadian announced a tour of the realm and I learnt that his route would take him near my home of Daveryn, I decided to act. With the king gone, the chance for turmoil in the realm and thereby the implementation of a new order, one where the church of Asmodeus was pre-eminent instead of Mitra's clergy, would be so much greater. Alas, even the best-laid plans fail sometimes and, to be fair, mine was not amongst those. Maybe lying in wait with a crossbow along the road they travelled wasn't the best idea. Regardless the assassination attempt was foiled by the damned Knights of the Alerion and I was sentenced for High Treason, the only crime for which one is drawn and quartered. Still, I regret nothing, except that I failed. If I could, I would take the entire Darius family with me into to the beyond. Especially Princess Bellinda, whose mocking and at the same time sympathetic smile as I was sentenced, still haunts me."

interested, I didn't see anything mentioned about what races are acceptable. Still thinking of potential ideas.

Alright, revised with new specifications.

The Crime:

"Eck. Humans." Eden scoffed.

The place was so... stuffy. It stank of bureaucratic nonsense and every step further into the human city she stepped was another new realization of how much she hated their fake niceties and arbitrary rules.

Eden was here to discuss payment to her tribe for their potential relocation. It made her smirk just thinking about how much trouble they must have caused the humans for them to consider such a drastic course of action. 'Can't beat us? Pay us.'

"Bow down, orc."

The booming human voice snapped her out of her thoughts. Her eyes shot up and stared straight through the eyes of the source. Her blood began to boil.

"I will not, plaything." she snarled back at the man garnishing some fancy dress standing before her. No sooner was the sentence out of her mouth before she was on her knees as she felt the impact of a guard's foot on the back of her right knee. Her gaze briefly abated the man's in surprise.

'This one' she thought to herself as her rage grew and her face slowly rose until her eyes met his once more 'this one will pay for his arrogance.'

I assume people can make appropriate racial selections. So many don't have a listed RP, and no way to figure it out, but are still balanced.

Do you have any opposition to vigilantes? My concept revolves around the vigilante part and cares very little for the social identity shenanigans.

Saashaa wrote:

I put what I'm opposed to in the character creation guidelines. Anything else is fair game :P

Very much interested in this! I'll toss something together shortly and get a character posted soon.

After giving it some thought I am going with a NE Dwarf Barbarian that committed murder. More to follow over the weekend.

Sovereign Court

Ah yes, there's always something you miss outside the edit window.

Antipaladin's have flexibility in their alignment to be LE/NE with minor changes to their abilities to reflect that shift.

I look forward to seeing the app, Mr Browman and LAB Rat.

What kind of time (UTC) do you expect the most action to be at? Because discord won't be that different from 'one post per day' if everyone logs in when the rest of the party is sleeping/at work.

Are we using background skills, or are those replaced by the bonus skills suggested by the AP?

Sovereign Court

I live in NA so I expect the most action to happen during the afternoons and evenings of the region.

There's no replacement schematic in play for skills; we're using the books suggested houserule of +2 skill points for the PC's per level. Background skills are just not being used at this table.

I believe with some minor tweaks Victor would fit in with this rugged bunch.

I know I’ll need to adjust the point buy and the traits. Outside of that let me know what you think. Thanks!

Just because I am curious, why do the PBP over on discord instead of here?

Sovereign Court

Hi Victor! If you want me to consider a character, please make sure you read the How to Apply section and fit that method.

As far as why I don't want to do it here, I don't want to have a forum environment. People tend to bugger off or post irregularly when on forums. A messaging app allows people to be more responsive and eliminates the need to remember to refresh a web page to see that someone has replied. I expect there will be times where active, live RP will be happening as people are home and have time, which suits a messaging app format better.

Hope that makes sense.

Myth-weavers sheet

physical description:
Trey'Tos stands a little over 4ft tall, and looks slightly on the small side for a dwarf. His short frame is layered in slabs of muscle. His black hair is cut short but his beard is kept long and well maintained. He has a tattoo on his upper right chest, at first glance it appears to be a birthmark as the runic text is so small and dense.

He wears practical clothes of dark, earthy tones.

personality:

Trey'Tos defaults to brooding and perceives slights where none were intended. His anger and rage issues are apparent to anyone who spends time with him. Like many of his kindred he is a borderline alcoholic. He craves power and respect that believes he deserves. He respects only those who can maintain their position through their ability having little time for those who use politics or money to maintain their power.

I know I still need to cover his crime but I don't have the time right now. I should have it done tomorrow.

Background (Abridged):
Peter was born in the heart of Talingrade to a father who was a dock worker and who’s mother died giving birth to him. Peter spent much of his beginning years alone, his father splitting his time between work and the tavern. Peter quickly joined up with a child gang being as he was a scrawny kid. He made friends pretty easily and found his niche doing the agile work of the crew. Occasionally Peter behaved erratically claiming that he heard someone change the plans. With his talent however, such occasions were overlooked.
As time passed however more strange things began happening. Peter would not show up for excursions, but any security would be completely absent. Only for rumors to appear later that the security was dead. When asked about this Peter would claim that he had no knowledge of the happenings because he was sleeping.
The local officials began taking action however, finding the crew and arresting them all. Inside the interrogations his friends sold him for their freedom after finding out about the gruesomeness of the murders. When Peter was questioned, he denied any involvement and showed disgust at the details. Confused, the officials seeked aid from the local mitran church. Though magic was used, Peter still appeared innocent. The murders had stopped however, so the officials dubbed Peter as ‘crafty’ and sent him to prison convinced that somehow he was the murderer.

Mystic Past Life (Arcanist [Occultist]) You can add spells from another spellcasting class to the spell list of your current spellcasting class. You add a number of spells equal to 1 + your spellcasting class’s key ability score bonus (Wisdom for clerics, and so on). The spells must be the same type (arcane or divine) as the spellcasting class you’re adding them to. For example, you could add divine power to your druid class spell list, but not to your wizard class spell list because divine power is a divine spell. These spells do not have to be spells you can cast as a 1st-level character. The number of spells granted by this ability is set at 1st level. Changes to your ability score do not change the number of spells gained. This racial trait replaces shards of the past. Spell choices: Death Knell, Debilitating Portent, Heal, Ill Omen, Spite

physical description:
Pentrax Perpetua is very tall, very thin, and very blue. Her solid white eyes mask the sadistic pleasure she gets from causing discord and disharmony, but her wicked grin certainly does not. She wears her jet-black hair cropped short and garbs herself in close-fitting black attire.

personality:
More than just her life's work, it is Pentrax Perpetua's countless many lifetimes' work to sow discord. She's ruthless in her drive to bring disharmony to the world and sadistically harsh in her methods. Her innate magical power is bolstered by her scholarly expertise, and she uses this power to maximum effect in furthering her aims.

crime:
With all this currently available "free time," Pentrax muses to herself, "The forged letter was perfect; on that, I have no doubt. So more's the pity my attempt to plant it on the prince by using that mongrel mutt I summoned was not. That's one mistake I won't make again. Lesson learned: let someone with more expertise in being sneaky handle that part next time. Or better yet, trick some pathetic fool into doing it unwittingly. Because there will always be a next time. And another. And another..."

Huh, right you are.

Alright, so, I have kind of an off character for this and one that might not be liked depending on the group. Saulric the Black. Saulric is a fighter, son of the castle Blacksmith and one time palace guard. He's a delusional maniac who lusted over the princess and convinced himself they were in love. He tried to consummate it and was caught. In his mind he has been unfairly detained and the PCs quest is perfectly acceptable in order to overthrow the "evil tyrant who keeps him and his love apart"

Sovereign Court

@Pentrax Your character does not in any way fit with the alignment of the game. As specifically outlines, characters must be LN, LE, or NE. Your character, top to bottom, is CE. Also I specifically asked for Myth-Weavers for sheets if you planned on providing a full build.

@DJ TPK if you want to app, please follow the format. I asked for a specific format for specific reasons.

My mistake; I somehow totally missed the LN, LE, NE alignments only thing. Regarding my stat block not being in Myth Weavers, I'd just spent a good few hours putting the build together in hero lab, coming up with the concept, and writing it all out. Filling out another character sheet seemed kinda pointless when I could just output a stat block from hero lab that has all the same info. I put a lot of effort into trying to do a good job with build, description, personality, and crime, but I do realize the character concept isn't a fit for what you were looking for.

I may start working on my build now just to hammer out the details.

Are you comfortable with us re-flavoring traits as long as the mechanical benefit remains the same?

Sovereign Court

Refluffing is something I always allow to some extent, but at least stay true to the spirit of the trait. If I see you refluffing for the sake of power (ie, taking Wayang Hunter and Magical Lineage) or refluffing the best traits just so you can take them without having a fitting story then I'm going to roll my eyes and pass you over simply because that's not the type of player I want at my table.

Alright, sounds great!

Description:
Clean cut, handsome, obviously wealthy human. He blends in to a crowd of fops and nobleman right until he begins to speak to you, then you become the only person in the world that matters and his magnetism kicks in.

Build:
Human Bard NE. High charisma and int.

Personality:
Noble from a wealthy family. Born confidence man who manipulates everyone around him out of habit.

Crime:
"M'Lord, it was only coin. Coin fairly earned no less. His Holy Eminence purchased some items of value that I had acquired from the early founding of the church... no, they were authentic. What do you mean I purchased them from a potter in Hens? I have never met the man in my life good sir. The nerve to even suggest... I... no M'Lord. Hard labor does sound better than the removal of my head. How would you like that confession then, and is their leniency if I turn in my co-conspirators? Who you ask, well who would you like them to be M'Lord?"

I know I still need to cover his crime but I don't have the time right now. I should have it done tomorrow.

Better late than never

crime:
Trey'Tos didn't need justification to harm someone, but the coin he had been paid and the tale of shady business practices didn't hurt. He had waited until after dark, after all walking the streets with a large axe tends to draw attention he didn't need.

When the time came he kicked the door in, axe already in hand, it probably wasn't locked yet but he wanted to make a point. as he entered the room the moneylender started to get up. "Ulrik said to say hello, " Trey'Tos said as he swung his axe the first time, the blow opening up a cut along the man's torso. He heard screaming as he swung the axe around again. He buried the axe in the man's skull on the second swing. He was still trying to dislodge it when the watchmen arrived.

I'm asking if an attempted rapist is too much for the game.

Sovereign Court

I'm afraid to ask why you'd want to play one.

Because that's the character. He says knowing that those words are a warning sign. Understand that this guy is delusional not evil. Not at first anyways. His story isn't about laying hands on every woman he meets. It's about his delusion that he and the princess were in love and the eventual shattering of that delusion. However the crime is a hot button topic and I'm perfectly willing to accept it if you don't want such a controversial character in your game.

Description:
He is a tall built human with scars all over his body who moves body as though its use to being weighted down by something. He is quit mostly, only giving the occasional grunt

Build:
LN Ifirit(Mostly Human) Samurai

Personality:
He's silent mostly, disregarding others as lower forms of life till they have bested him, he is always ready for a fight, yearning to want fight when ever he can, regardless of the consequences but only acting if provoked.

Crime:
"So what if it's illegal? He was the one cocky enough to want to challenge me. I didn't give a damn that he was only doing it to impress his friends, he should have at least better prepare himself. At least he went down without a complaint, wish his friends were as honorable."

Well, since it's now a couple of days later I will assume the answer is no and bid you adieu.

She gave her discord tag for if you have questions.

Silver Crusade

Is this still open to be played?

Sovereign Court

@rorek55 Yep. Recruiting until I see the perfect party of people. I'm in no rush.

@DJ TPK As Havocprince mentioned I gave my Discord tag if you had a pressing need for answers and mentioned I'm more responsive there. That said, I think any concept where you feel the need to ask if playing a rapist is okay you can generally assume it's not okay.

Silver Crusade

To be honest, I'm having a rough time choosing between two characters I've made for this game, so, I am wondering if I could submit two separate characters, if not I'll pick one or the other, but here we go.

First up, Arrac, Bloodrager (infernal bloodline)

description:

nearly seven feet tall, 275 lbs of raw muscle. Skin color is a darker shade of green, and he has elaborate tattoo's running over the course of his arms and chest. Along with several scars. His hair is Black, and he prefers to keep a dark 5 o'clock shadow.

build:
Melee fighter, Nothing too special here save the bloodraging aspect and the infernal bloodline.

personality:
Cold. Arrac now believes that Might makes right. He wants and desires power for the sake of it. Those with power survive, those without die. He is smart, for a savage, and recognizes those with strength. He doesn't like being told what to do, but listens to those he knows he cannot match. He is more of a "get it done" type rather than a debate and plan type preferring to act. He has a sort of crude honor to him and will honor agreements, particularly duels. Though, to him, no trick is too low to use unless specified.

crime:
Heresy, Arrac and his clan were charged with heresy and witchcraft. No one survived their purge save Arrac.

Second, and the one I am leaning more towards, the Mesmerist.

description:

Tall, and well toned. Short, jet black hair, piercing green eyes, a chiseled jaw with a long scar running from the bottom of his left eye down to his jawline.

build:
a Manipulator and subjugator, He will do a variety of things during combat and out.

personality:
Thrill-seeker, Charming, Charismatic, vain, conceited, confident, intelligent, deceitful, and conniving. He enjoys bending words and twisting deals to better suit him. He also suffers from a minor superiority complex. Often times He will mess with someones mind just for the fun of it. However, despite himself he does prefer to stick to bargains struck, though he usually manages to weigh them heavily in his favor.

crime:
High-treason. He was caught and convicted for plotting against the crown, even having killed a royal messenger in service of the crown to further a coup. On top of spreading lies, deceit, and false accusations of heresy

Build:
Alain
Basically he's a front liner specializing in negative energy. He utilizes darkness as a secondary defense due to the fact he can lower the light level by one, this leads to him preferring night time escapades to increase the number of shadows for him to fight in.

Description:
Alain is an odd looking fellow, his chipper face and brass colored skin clashing with the dark and gloomy aura that hangs about him. The world seems to lose some of its light when Alain is around.

Personality:
Wicked, but not without his soft spots. Harming the young is a tough thing for Alain to go through with, he does however see this as a weakness. His softness being the cause of his current situation in brandscar.

Crime:
"I will not facilitate your weakness forever Alain, as your father I will grant this one request this one time. Do not bring another calf to my door or it will be dinner, now be gone."

Alain Stands outside of his fathers small family fortress in the rain as the elderly vampire chastises his foolishness for whisking the young daughter of a noble away from home.

"Thank you father. I will not be overly long in returning."

The old undead scoffs, nudging the small human inside of the fortress before responding.

"You best not have wasted my time, Alain, return alive and whole or I will see to it that your soul is tormented doubly in hell... Make speed, I can see their torches."

With this, the vampire closes the door, and the Dhampire takes of into the night.

Sovereign Court

Hi applicants.

I've made my selections and contacted my players. Thanks so much for your interest in the game!
