That's what I really, really want. Is a full index that I can use to look up stuff.

When I first got the Pathfinder Core book I geeked out on the fact that there was an index I could look things up in. Compare that to the 3.5 players handbook which was... Unacceptable.

I know I can use an app/the internet/search a PDF instead of looking up things in an index, but there is no where to type in your search terms in a dead tree. And having the rules in book form is always the best IMHO (instant access, no dead batteries, near-infinite screen size, etc...)

Just my $0.02.

And so far, I like what I see. :-D

Yes, I too would like a fat index, especially as the core book will be huge. 5th Ed fell short on this.

Liberty's Edge

I liked the 5e index until I tried to use it. Was not well designed. Too many "see XXX" without a page number rather than "also see XXX"

As someone who has converted to PDF to avoid bad indexes, I support this for folks who still use physical copies. /signed

As the guy who built both indices, I think you are going to be happy. This one is about 5 pages long, triple column.

I wonder how many formatting differences there will be to the CRB. Will the playtest book already be formatted like the final product (as WIP naturally) or will it have a simpler form?

That's something I actually LOATHE when I have to look up something in a World of Darkness book. PAizo really spoiled me with their awesome indices. Thanks Jason.

White Wolf was notorious for not being able to do an index to save their lives. That and Page XX.

Jason, all the librarians of the world love you.

(Okay, at least just this one.)

Hmm

The librarian and archivist excitement here may be already boiling too close to a frenzy, but at the risk of an explosion, it's time to reveal the most exciting revelation yet for the entire playtest book*. In addition to the index, it also has...

...

...

a glossary of terms!

*If you are a librarian or archivist who loves appendices. Offer of most exciting revelation not valid in most locations, void where prohibited.

Comedy aside, a glossary is a very good thing. Will the glossary also include page numbers?

Thank you, yes, page numbers are key, especially for the vision-impaired/partially sighted (or whatever they call people going progressively blind now), such as I.

I thought the books were just used to populate a shelf and look cool? Isn't d20pfsrd the better index anyway? I mean, once the second hardcover for the game is released - the index's value drops significantly.

Something to consider in about 2025, when a bunch of expansions have been added: a cross-book index.

For example, they could release a big Core Rulebook 2 that includes compiled (and erratad) copies of various classes, feats, spells etc from minor expansions, and the back of that CRB2 could have an index and glossary that subsumes all the books.

Sanity: Ultimate Horror, page 171.

Crazifuzzy —

Although there are search buttons in GoodReader (the PDF reader crucial to my GMing) and although my phone has a saved shortcut to Archives of Nethys for in-game rules lookups, nothing can beat having an index. There are conventions where wifi connectivity is notoriously bad.

Nothing beats having an index and a glossary to a brand new system! You can hand your players the Playtest hardcover and say, “Look this up while I keep the game moving forward.”

I like using all the tools, mind. I’m a librarian. Having multiple avenues to cross reference a rules set is great.

Now Mark —

I love the Glossary, but will 2E be better about not reusing terminology in the same game? In 1E, you had Evangelist (Archetype) or Evangelist Prestige Class — Race + Racial Traits — Skald (Archetype) and Skald (Class)... I would love it if you had a universal in house Glossary that you issued to all free-lancers for 2E.

If you do that, you too will be revered in the Librarian Hall of Fame.

Hmm

I’m actually super excited about a glossary. Will we get to play test with it? You never know what random game terms will come up wanting for definition.

Ohhh LORD!!! A good index AND A GLOSSARY!?!?!?!??!?

And I second (or third, maybe fourth... I just ++ it) the request of having page numbers in the glossary. Having a quick definition, and then a place to go for more information would be awesome.

I think they're going to do a Pathfinder 2: Ultimate Library for this.

So can we expect a Libraries and Archives of Golarion at some point.

Have you looked at Inner Sea Intrigue? That's where my favorite bard archetype, the Studious Librarian, comes from. It's also got a tour of some of the famous libraries of Golarian.

But I'm all for more adventures set in libraries!

This is outrageous, it is a total nerf to people that spend their time reading the book cover to cover. How am I supposed to be the table system expert, when anyone can just look things in an index?!

A glossary is totally an argument tax. Now we are forced to look terms up in a glossary, rather than argue about it for 20 minute. This is actually going to reduce the amount time spent playing the game, because Adventure Paths are going to be quick and easier to get through.

I can't believe that Paizo are doing this. I might reconsider even getting PFe2. Maybe I will just have to ban the index and glossary at my table.

You are WRONG SIR!!! Having a Glossary is the One True Way and ranks up there in importance with LG Paladin Goblins as the One True And Bestest Good!!! Also, having a Glossary gives you not only MORE to read, but then you can easily memorize it, and be all smug when people ask for a definition, disagree with your definition, then calmly state "Well, go ahead and look it up then..." and have them read with dread exactly the words that you stated.

This is the essence of the Pathfinder Rules Zealot! Which should be included as a Core Class!!! The range of it's powers know no bound, with abilities such as Detect Wrongness, Channel Rules, CRB Bomb, Smite GM, and reactions like Opportune Rule Quoting that are triggered when someone does something WRONG (obviously this only works when Detect Wrongness is on, but for the Pathfinder Rules Zealot, it is always on, even when the game is off!) Unfortunately, you need to be of the OBJECTIVELY BEST alignment of CENGL! But this isn't a problem for the Pathfinder Rules Zealot, only for the people who OPPOSE the zealot!

@Mark, when are we getting a preview of this class???

:-P
