Large Creature Spaces and Terrain

Rules Questions

How does terrain affect large spaces?

Say I have a Huge (3x3 squares) creature walking through an area that's only 2 squares long full of dense rubble. Does difficult terrain affect them?

What about, say, a 10 ft. x 10 ft pit and my Huge or Gargantuan creature is going through it. Is their movement normal or is it difficult terrain? What if they stop and are partially in the space?

Thanks to those who can direct me on what to do. I am in a situation where I have a Huge (3x3 square) creature with a 2x2 square pit in front of them, and a Wall of Stone blocking the other side. I was curious if my Huge creature can partially share that space without hindrance as they attempt to break the wall down (the creatures only have 10 ft. reach).

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Concerning the rubble, i guess it depends on how big the chunks of rubble are. If it's the size of rainbarrels, it could potentially be so.
If it's broken planks and bricks, its feet are probably big enough to ignore that.

As example for the above, there is this one PFS mission, where a river requires swim checks for the PCs, but is considered difficult terrain for the big sized creature the party faces.

With the pit...probably GM discretion. I've not faced that situation before, but i'd imagine it could share its space, but would end its move, if it enters it. (Regaining balance, since part of its space is empty air, after all)
Potentially moving 1/2 speed to properly move through it.
The above i assume for huge sized creatures, gargantuan most likely wouldn't be hindered by a 10x10 ft pit.

That is of course merely my own thoughts on the situation, others might have seen this before and are more knowledgeable. :)

Largely GM call.
I've had terrain affect different sized creatures differently - deep steps that are difficult terrain for medium and smaller, but large and larger unaffected or a cluttered room full of tables and chairs that is difficult terrain for medium creatures, but tiny creatures just dart under them so are unaffected.

For the balancing over the pit - acrobatics checks are one option or maybe make the huge critter flatfooted while so balanced as it can't move about so freely.
